arm weather often gives rise to thoughts about spending time in the great outdoors. Decks can expand outdoor living spaces, making them popular home additions. However, when it comes time to map out a deck building plan, individuals may be unsure as to which deck material will meet their needs. Wood and composite decks are among the most popular choices today, and the popularity of aluminum is growing steadily.

Wood Wood is a versatile and attractive decking material. According to the wood resource Real Cedar, some people think that wood is too expensive and requires too much maintenance. In fact, domestic softwoods can be very cost-effective decking options. According to Remodeling Magazine’s “Cost vs. Value” report, wood decks retain considerable resale value.

In terms of maintenance, choosing a rot-resistant wood can result in less maintenance. Durable woods include cedar and redwood. Popular Mechanics says both species contain tannins and oils that make them naturally resistant to decay, rot and voracious insects.

Periodic cleaning and inspection/repairs will be needed, but wood can be much more durable than people may think.

Composite

Composite decking and its close cousin, plastic lumber, are some of the fastest-growing decking materials on the market. Many products are made from polyethylene or polyvinyl chloride. Some

composites will be comprised of recycled plastic and wood fibers to create a weather- and stain-resistant material that doesn’t warp, rot or splinter. Composite manufacturers continually experiment with manufacturing processes to duplicate the look of natural wood grain.

Homeowners are often drawn to composite decking because such decks require little maintenance. These decks do not need to be sanded, stained or refinished. However, mold and mildew can grow in shady, damp areas, so homeowners must realize that these products are not completely maintenance-free.

Aluminum Although aluminum decks are not seen that often, there are reasons why this decking material is becoming more popular. According to LockDry®, a manufacturer of aluminum decking materials, power-coated aluminum does not need to be replaced due to rotting, cracking or warped boards. Most planks have interlocking edges that create gap-free, watertight decks. Aluminum also has the advantage of being a very strong but lightweight material.

Some people may think that aluminum decks would be hot underfoot, but the material actually stays cooler in the sun because of its heat-dissipation properties. For those who have green goals in mind, aluminum is totally recyclable.

omeowners looking to add more space to their homes do not necessarily need to make major renovations. They simply have to see the possibilities in outdoor living spaces.

Outdoor living spaces are coveted niches in a home. The American Home Furnishings Alliance says more than 70 percent of American households have outdoor living spaces, and nearly 70 percent of people use these spaces at least once per week in-season. Furthermore, homeowners are increasingly interested in enhancing these spaces to make them more usable and comfortable.

If your budget allows, consider closing in the porch as a true three-season room so it can be used throughout fall, spring and summer.

Hope for Youth www.hfyny.org Hope for Youth is an Amityville-based, notfor-profit organization that works to facilitate positive change in the lives of Long Island children, youth and families.

Nationwide, 45 percent of foster children reside in a foster family home with a nonrelative, while 34 percent are with a foster family home with a relative. For 54 percent of foster children, the goal is to reunite the child with a parent or primary caretaker.

The goal is adoption for 28 percent.

On Long Island, Hope For Youth is a central player in the identification and training of foster families. All Hope For Youth foster families receive multiple certifications in parenting skills.

Foster parents take part in mandated educational workshops throughout the course of the year.

The team members at Hope For Youth are keenly aware of the unique role that kinship caregivers play in working to achieve reunification for children and youth in foster care. This focus helps to keep moving the system toward one that truly supports families.

The organization also participates in “Wendy’s Wonderful Kids,” part of the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption.

Under this program, Hope For Youth has two adoption recruiters who bring children waiting to be adopted from foster care closer to safe, loving and permanent homes. The Foundation’s adoption recruitment model has proven effective nationwide in serving children who’ve been in foster care the longest.

Hope For Youth is always looking for new foster parents. They also welcome volunteer and charitable donations to help advance its foster care work, and to advance all of its programming in support of children Island-wide who deserve more stable and fulfilling lives.

As next month is quickly approaching, it is appropriate to mention that May is National Foster Care Month, an initiative conducted through the US Department of Health and Human Services. The month is devoted to “ensuring a bright future for more than 407,000 children and youth in foster care.” The average age is 8 years old for those children, and there is just about an event split between how many of them are boys and how many are girls.

The month acknowledges foster parents, family members, volunteers, policymakers and others who help children and youth in foster care find permanent homes and connections.

Synthetic Turf Sports Fields At Gaynor & Moriches Park

The Town of Smithtown Parks Department is scheduled to complete the main Little League field at Gaynor Park for local, young athletes and their families to enjoy in time for the season. In addition to this renovation, construction of the new synthetic field at the largest softball field at Moriches Park is expected to be completed in a month’s time. These improvements are the result of a partnership with the St James Smithtown Little League for field improvements to both increase the amount of field time, as well as enhance the safety and overall experience for our youth.

-Supervisor Ed Wehrheim The ball field at Moriches Park and the little league field at Gaynor Park have been resurfaced with a 90 foot synthetic turf infield.

Both synthetic fields feature new upgrades for safety, including raising the fencing to upwards of ten feet, to protect spectators and vehicles from fly balls. At Gaynor Park, brick walkways surround a tinted concrete sidewalk.

The darker concrete will extend the appeal and overall aesthetics of the areas frequented by spectators. This addition to

the facility at Gaynor will complement the previous renovation work, which included new Basketball, and Tennis courts in addition to a new state-ofthe-art playground.

At Moriches Park, the Parks Department will be rebuilding a new dugout, backstop and added fencing as part of the field restoration.

The synthetic field replacement compliments previous park renovations including the artificial turf field replacement at the Moriches Park Soccer Complex, which was completed last April.

Additional renovations completed at Moriches Park include the new soft splash pad at the waterpark, state-of-the-art playground, interactive playhouse, new fencing surrounding the play areas, concrete sidewalks, LED user-friendly crosswalk, and landscaping.

Smithtown High School West Girls Soccer Earns National Ranking The Smithtown High School West varsity girls soccer team’s success has led to national recognition.

United Soccer Coaches ranked the team 24th nationally in its recently released year-end poll.

In the first county final matchup in any sport between the district’s two high schools, West topped East to earn the county title.

In the Long Island final, West then fell to Massapequa, which finished with a No. 11 national ranking.

The Bulls had several individual honorees, with senior Hannah Maracina earning All-State, and

Maracina, junior Stephanie Schubert, senior Nicole Mennella and senior Julia Tylar earning All-County.

Additionally, seniors Emma Wilkinson and Kaitlyn Scheuchenko were All-League.

Tylar also was the county championship MVP and Newsday All-Long Island second team.

Emily Fey was named Coach of the Year while working alongside assistant coach Michael Forman.

The team went 12-2-1 in the league and 16-3-1 overall.

“This season was truly one that could have been taken straight from a

storybook,” Fey said.

“These girls worked unbelievably hard each day, and we firmly believe we still did not reach our peak. We had more to give and further to go. But each ending sparks a new beginning. And we are optimistic for what next season will bring.”

She continued, “The loss of our seniors will leave tough spots to fill. But with the leadership and passion for the game that they have instilled in the underclassmen, we know that many will rise to the occasion.”

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, up to 1 in 5 children ages 3 to 17 years old experienced mental health challenges.

In an effort to address this public health concern and spark conversations about mental health

among high schoolers, the National Institutes of Health invites students ages 16 to 18 years old to participate in the “2022 Speaking Up About Mental Health!” essay contest.

Essays should explore ways that individuals or society can address or eliminate mental health stigma that young people may face when seeking mental health treatment.

The contest, supported by

the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD), and the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), will award multiple winners a total of up to $15,000 in cash prizes.

Ideas for essay topics could include:

Resilience and coping during challenging times School policies or practices that could help reduce stigma Conversations about mental health or related stigmas Barriers to mental health treatment Other areas of concern to individuals and their communities with respect to mental health Through these short

essays, teens can express their own thoughts and ideas about the mental health challenges they and their peers face. They can also share possible solutions for improving communication and understanding among teens, parents, teachers, guardians, and other caregivers.

Real estate is the biggest investment the average person will make in his or her lifetime, which underscores just how significant the home buying decision can be.

The real estate experts at Zillow recently reported that the national median price of a home in the United States is $272,446.

However, since the National Association of Realtors reported a record low housing inventory late in 2020, the average house price has been rising rapidly nationwide. The Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis estimates the median home sales price at $374,900, and certain states have much higher prices.
