Guest Speakers Wanted For Smithtown Senior Center Garden Club

The Town of Smithtown Senior Citizens Department is looking for guest speakers to address the Garden Club about special topics in the world of gardening. Any individual or group who has interest in talking about their area of gardening prowess is encouraged to reach out and volunteer. Most recently, Sheryl from Hoyt Farm treated club members to a presentation on pollinators.

The Garden Club at the Senior Center was formed about six years ago. The group grows both vegetables and flowers in the ground and in standing beds at their patio garden. Club members range in age from 60 years old to 102 years old. Those that wish to plant and tend the garden, do so. Those unable to actively garden share their knowledge and love of gardening with others. The Garden Club meets at the Senior Center every Thursday from 12:30PM to 1:30PM from April through September.

Smithtown residents ages 60 years and older can join the Senior Center by filling out a brief application on-site, along with proof of residency such as a driver’s license. No fee is required. A membership card and welcome packet will be provided, along with a tour of the facility by a Senior Center Club Leader. The welcome packet includes a current calendar of activities, classes, and events, as well as brochures for services and amenities available exclusively for

members.

The Eugene Cannataro Senior Citizens Center offers a wide array of activities, clubs and programming geared towards improving quality of life for residents ages 60 years or older. Every day, the Center offers a full schedule of arts, fitness, and wellness programming. Members can choose to join a variety of clubs, from gardening, quilting and book clubs to one of seven social clubs, featuring casino and theater outings, luncheons, parties, community advocacy and volunteer opportunities. In addition to a wealth of entertaining programming, the Smithtown Senior Citizens Department offers a variety of at home maintenance and repairs services.

Long Island (RTLI) is a nonprofit organization, headquartered in Farmingdale, serving Nassau County and most of Su olk County. As an a liate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together, their mission is repairing homes, revitalizing communities and rebuilding lives.

To accomplish their vision of safe and healthy homes for everyone, they provide free essential home safety repairs and modifications for economicallydisadvantaged homeowners, whether they are older adults, veterans, families or persons with a disability or limited mobility.

The beneficiaries of RTLI’s work, lowincome homeowners struggling to get by, are so appreciative of the repairs and modifications that this organization does to keep them safe and improve their quality of life. “I was desperate,” said a widow of a Navy veteran who welcomed RTLI’s helping hand. “Now I have so much less stress and a more comfortable and safer house.”

Another recent client said, “Thank you for treating my home like it was yours. You all showed professionalism, caring and impeccable workmanship. You made my home more livable and safer. You are doing a beautiful thing and should be very proud.” These words lift the spirits of the hardworking RTLI volunteers.

Their small o ce in Farmingdale has only one employee, so their volunteers are really a significant part of what they do. “Our volunteers are the heart and soul of our organization,” said Stella Hendrickson, President of RTLI. “Almost all are retired. They give their time, their talents, their expertise and their hearts

to those who need a helping hand.”

The volunteer teams work tirelessly to help our neighbors, traveling throughout Long Island, using their own cars and tools. They come from all walks of life and professions, from teachers to principals, business owners, social workers, administrative assistants, accountants and truck drivers. The list goes on and on, but they all have one thing in common; their commitment to do the right thing, give back, lend a hand and be there for someone in need.

Here are ways you can get involved:

•If you know someone who may benefit from their services, have them call the RTLI o ce at 631.777.7894, Monday – Friday, to see if they qualify for the free program.

•Join the RTLI team! Volunteers can sign up at rebuildingtogetherli.org/ volunteer-today. Currently they are looking for individuals who are fluent in Spanish and for an o ce person, particularly if they are familiar with Salesforce. Additionally, if you are handy with tools, the Nassau and Su olk crew teams are always looking for more help.

•Donate at rebuildingtogetherli. org. RTLI relies on the donations of our neighbors, some grants and corporate sponsorships, as they do not receive any government funding.

•RTLI encourages local business to get involved and sponsor a project. The organization can find the right project for your business to sponsor and you can then promote your generosity on social media to show your commitment to improving the health and safety of someone in need locally.

When we work together, we can bring about transformational change quickly in our communities.

Sen. Mattera And Long Island Cares Join Together To Help Protect Pets

New York State Senator Mario R. Mattera (2nd Senate District) is proud to join with Long Island Cares to help protect pets throughout our region. To assist the organization’s 12th Annual Legislative Pet Food Drive Challenge, Senator Mattera’s district office will serve as a collection point for pet supplies to help the charity restock Baxter’s Pet Pantry to help ensure that Long Island families in need are able to

care for their pets.

Long Island Cares, in partnership with the Animal Relief Fund Inc. (ARF), created Baxter’s Pet Pantry in 2009 to help pet-owning families throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties get the supplies they need. In addition to providing pet food, the Pet Pantry offers toys, pet clothes and other pet necessities.

From now until Wednesday, May 31st,

Senator Mattera’s Office will be collecting pet supplies for cats, hamsters, dogs, fish, birds, ferrets and others. To make it convenient, a donation box will be at Senator Mattera’s District Office located at 180 East Main Street, Suite 210, Smithtown, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Long Island Cares has stated that its most needed

pet items are:

• 5 or 10 pound bags of dog and cat food

• Canned food for dogs and cats

• Dog and cat treats

• Collars and leashes

• Food For all animals including birds, fish, ferrets and hamsters

• Fish food

• Cat litter

• Small new toys

According to the organization, all donated pet

food must be unopened and in its original packaging. For health reasons, the organization will not accept opened bags, ripped bags or loose pet food.

“Anyone who has a family pet knows that they are not just animals; they are a part of the family. When a family falls on hard times, as many in our community have in the past couple of years, it is difficult for them to provide for everyone – including pets.

I thank Long Island Cares for their efforts and am glad to support their efforts to help ensure that pets can stay in their homes, with their families, where they belong,” said Senator Mattera.

Abigail Brennan Recognized By Board Of Education

High School East sophomore Abigail Brennan was recognized by the board of education Tuesday night, April 11, for her recent accomplishments at the FIRST Long Island Regional Championship at Hofstra University.

Abigail was nominated

by her Smithtown Robotics team to be a Deans List finalist. Competing with nearly 100 students across Long Island, Abigail was one of two people chosen as Deans Finalists during the Long Island Regional.

“As a sophomore, she is demonstrating a lot of

leadership skills that are very much needed,” said Brian Costello, Co-Advisor for the Smithtown Robotics team.

“Being a sophomore, I wasn’t expecting anything but I just love the experience in getting to do the interview process,” Abigail remarked.

Manya Khatri and Akarsh Chilakala took part in the State Officer Exam. The results of this test will be out shortly and will determine if they move forward to representing Commack as New York State Officers. In addition, Marissa Sklar and Akarsh Chilakala took the Future Business Leaders exam. This exam is a state competition, and we wish them well placing in the top ten. Those results will also be out shortly.

A second aspect of the FBLA Spring District Meeting Competition is virtual business tests. These tests consist of 50 questions

and a 30-minute time limit on a range of professional topics. Congratulations to these FBLA winners:

PUZZLE ANSWERS: Senior Advocate Schedule For Smithtown And Huntington Seniors

Suffolk County Legislator

Rob Trotta is pleased to provide senior residents of Smithtown and Huntington with the Suffolk County Office for the Aging Senior Advocate schedule for May and June. According to the Office of the Aging, senior advocates will educate seniors on benefits they may be eligible for and assist them in applying for those benefits. Particular emphasis is on programs that foster economic independence such Supplemental Nutrition

Assistance Program (formerly known as Food Stamps), Medicare Savings Program and HEAP. They recommend that interested seniors call the sites in advance to confirm that the advocate will be there.

“This is a great opportunity for seniors to meet with a representative from the Suffolk County Office of the Aging to get information and assistance,” said Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta.

The spring dates and locations are as follows:

Town of Smithtown: May 5, 10:00am-1:00pm and June 2, 10:00am -1:00pm

The Boy Scouts of America Alumnus of the Year Award is BSA Alumni

Local Scouting Volunteer Recognized

Association’s highest recognition. This award was established to recognize

alumni of the BSA who, over a sustained period, have used the skills and values

they learned through their association with scouting to make significant and longlasting contributions to the scouting alumni movement, to scouting in general and their communities. This is not meant to be another Man of the Year, Good Citizen, or general Philanthropist award. There are three levels of this award – national, territories and council – that may be granted for alumni service.

Award was created in 2013 and presented in Suffolk County Council for the first time in 2022, to Carl Hyman.

LOCAL SCOUTING VOLUNTEER RECOGNIZED -

The Council Alumnus of the Year Award is given for exceptional service to the alumni movement on a council-wide basis. Each council may select one nominee for this award annually. The council must notify the national office of their selection allowing accurate record keeping and current website information. The national office will forward a Certificate to be signed locally for a formal presentation at a public event.

The Alumnus of the Year

Recognized for promoting the scouting program for more than 45 years and being actively involved on a variety of levels, Phyllis Stein of Hauppauge was presented with the BSA Council Alumnus of the Year Award during the Suffolk County Council (ScoutsBSA) Fellowship Dinner, held at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp on March 23, 2023.

Phyllis has been a registered member of the Boy Scouts of America SCC since 1978. She is actively involved with Troop 343 (Hauppauge) and Troop 125 (Commack) and is a past Cub Scout Leader. In addition to serving for many decades as the Public Relations Chair and Photographer for the Jewish Committee on Scouting, the Matinecock District, and many SCC-

wide events (including covering and staffing seven National Scout Jamborees) and writing news articles about the various events, she also served as the cochair of the council’s history book, Scouting in Suffolk, 1910-1986.

As Bob Koch mentioned when he presented Phyllis as this year’s awardee, “no one has done more in promoting scouting in Suffolk County than Phyllis Stein. She is extremely deserving of this award.”
