www.hfyny.org Hope For Youth’s dedicated team of staff, volunteers and interns facilitates positive change in the lives of Long Island children, youth and families. The non-profit runs what they call a Kinship Caregiver Program, which helps create a better Long Island by offering a child a pathway to a better future.

Equally as sad, Long Island, like many communities across the country, is in dire need of foster parents for children from birth to the age of 18, whether these caregivers have informal or formal custody of children.

Such care isn’t always provided by unrelated individuals. When provided by a relative, it’s called “kinship care.”

Kinship foster parents must provide full-time protection and nurturing of a child, as well as a stable and safe home.

They must be above the age of 21 and meet a number of additional eligibility requirements.

Designated kinship foster parents receive various types of financial support. They also receive family services, case management support and other supportive services.

Families have access to such Hope For Youth services as mental health, ChildParent Psychotherapy, Children and Family Treatment Support Services and the Health Home program.

In addition, Hope For Youth partners with the “Parenting the Second Time Around” (PASTA) team from the Riverhead-based Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County to help grandparents navigate the educational, medical and legal systems to get the support and resources they need. Their experts assist with such challenges as discipline, child development, legal concerns and rebuilding a family.

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County also provides support groups for both adults and children, plus monthly social activities for families.

During the evening, May took classes at Brooklyn College studying law and languages. She soon met her future husband.

They moved to Long Island where they raised four children. While the children were growing up, she was involved in the PTA, her church, scouting and taking her daughter for early morning skating lessons. She was a volunteer raising funds for the soon to be built St. John’s Hospital in Smithtown and upon its completion continued to volunteer at the hospital.

May also was a secretary at the law firm of the late John V. N. Klein and his

personal secretary when he became Town Supervisor.

She later joined the management team at St. John’s Hospital as its Director of Volunteers. A position she was well suited for based on her longtime involvement with the organization and her other community involvement.

As a resident of Fairfield St. James, she continues to give back to her neighbors serving as the vice president of its Civic Association. She is also its past president and secretary.

Legislator Trotta added, “May is dedicated to enhancing the lives of her children, grandchildren and others, and throughout her life has demonstrated a strong work ethic. She is most deserving of this recognition and I have the utmost admiration for her.”

Juniors from the Smithtown Central School District and their parents had the opportunity to meet firsthand with representatives from colleges and universities on March 24.

The district hosted its annual college fair, and admissions counselors from 105 higher education institutions attended the event at Smithtown High School East.

The Suffolk County

Police Department, as well as the U.S. Air Force, Army, Marines, Navy and Coast Guard, also had representatives on site to discuss potential careers in law enforcement and the military.

Students were handed a list of attending institutions upon arriving as well as potential questions to ask college representatives, including admission requirements and application deadlines.

The institutions included local universities such as Adelphi, Farmingdale State, Five Towns College, Hofstra, LIU, Molloy, New York Institute of Technology, Stony Brook, SUNY Maritime and SUNY Old Westbury as well as those from other parts of the country, including the University of Alabama, University of South Carolina and University of Tampa

At the March 29 General Meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature, the Presiding Office recognized the nominees who were named the 2022 Women of Distinction for each of the 18 legislative districts.

Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta nominated May Chasteen for his 13th Legislative District. “May has been a consummate volunteer for most of her life and the first director of volunteers for St. John’s Hospital in Smithtown.

She is passionate about her family, friends and community,” said Legislator Trotta.

At 90 years of age, May is still extremely proud of being a first-generation American. She was born and raised in Brooklyn and graduated from Bay Ridge High School. After graduation, she worked

A Letter From Project9Line Dear supporters, The Department of Veterans Affairs is proposing changes to the VA Schedule for Rating Disabilities specifically pertaining to the respiratory & auditory body systems as well as mental disorders. The “savings” from these proposed changes are projected at 100 Billion dollars over the next 10 years. That equals $100,000 directly from 1 Million Veterans pockets. The main conditions affected are Sleep Apnea, Tinnitus, and PTSD. We only have 1 week left to stop them. Please alert your network around the country to tell their local congressman that we do not want these changes made. Also, please tell your media contacts the same.

Together we can stop them but we must Act now.

The VA claims that they will not reduce any current Ratings but it is the VA’s regular practice to periodically reassess disabled veterans who have not sought an increase. If a reassessment occurs, it may be done under the new guidelines and the risk of reduction is most definitely present. This new rating schedule may effect every veteran past, present, and future.

The reason for the proposed sleep apnea changes is because many veterans who were exposed to burn pits and/or agent orange (both are dioxin) have developed the condition sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is extremely debilitating and can be fatal.

Currently, if a veteran is diagnosed with sleep apnea and is prescribed a CPAP (Continuous positive airway pressure) machine they are entitled to 50% service connection.

Sleep apnea symptoms include; excessive daytime sleepiness (hypersomnia), depression, anxiety, headaches, sexual disfunction, hight blood pressure, increased accidents, cardiac issues, loud snoring, gasping for air during sleep, morning headache, difficulty staying asleep (insomnia), of inability to concentrate, irritability, snoring, restlessness while sleeping, waking up suddenly after gasping or choking, trouble concentrating, forgetfulness, or crankiness, constant need to go pee at night, night sweats as well as it can lead to a stroke.

The VA is proposing to eliminate

the 50% threshold verbiage that currently states “the veteran requires the use of a breathing assistance device, such as a CPAP machine” which entitles the veteran to 50% service connection. By removing this verbiage they will effectively eliminate any future applicants from getting the 50% rating for sleep apnea. The VA states “the basis for assignment of evaluation at all of these proposed levels will be the functional impairment caused by sleep apnea, not simply the method of treatment.” Also, the VA claims the “purpose of these changes is to update medical terminology, incorporate medical advances that have occurred since the last review, and provide well- defined criteria in accordance with actual clinical practice.” This is not so, It’s all about the money as shown through the VA projected savings in the VA economic impact study released on January 27, 2022.

From said VA economic impact study - “VALUE: VA has determined that there are costs and transfer savings associated with this rulemaking. The total transfers savings is $15 billion from FY 2022-2026 and $57.1 billion over a 10-year period from FY 2022-2031.” Most of that savings (40 Billion) is from the proposed sleep apnea ratings changes and Tinnitus removal (15 Billion).

The reason for the tinnitus changes is because almost everyone that has served has developed tinnitus.

Tinnitus is the most commonly service connected condition. Over 90% of Veteran applicants are granted service connection for tinnitus (over 2 million veterans are service connected for tinnitus) and are paid about $150 per month at the current rate. The VA is proposing to eliminate the 10% rating for tinnitus and combine the symptoms of tinnitus with hearing loss and rate it under hearing loss.

The issue is that the threshold for service connection for hearing loss is much more difficulty to achieve.

The result of this change will make it extremely difficult for veterans to be compensated for tinnitus and the constant ringing in the ears.

Also, in a separate simultaneous proposal, the VA is proposing to change the Rating Schedule for

mental health conditions. After review it seems that these changes may be beneficial to veterans but we should all be wary of assuming any benefit from these changes just yet.

The definition and interpretation of the new verbiage has yet to be played out. With an estimated savings of 45 Billion over the next 10 years, it appears that the veterans with mental health conditions could be paying the price.

Estimated savings based on the VA economic impact study of the proposed changes to the mental health verbiage within the ratings schedule. “Estimated impact: VA has

determined that there are costs and transfers associated with this rule making. The total budgetary impact is $18.3 billion from FT 2022-2026 and $45 billion over a 10-year period from FY 2022-2031.”

We can not let them make these changes. Please take the time to alert your fellow Americans, fellow veterans, elected officials, and media connections that we do not want these changes made.

Sweetbriar Nature Center Brings Animal Friends To Smithtown Elementary School

The Sweetbriar Nature Center in Smithtown, and its furry, scaled and prickly friends, visited Smithtown Elementary School on March 31.

Kindergartners at the school saw up close a box turtle, snake, hedgehog, rabbit and Eastern screech

owl, with the opportunity to touch a few.

During “Animal Interviews” sessions, students were presented with riddles and guessed each animal before it was presented. Students also learned about different adaptations each animal

has developed to help it survive in the wild.

Sweetbriar Nature Center is situated on 54 acres of garden, woodland, field and wetland habitats on the Nissequogue River.

Hundreds of species of plants and animals reside there.

Great Hollow Middle School Performs ‘Frozen’

Elsa, Anna and Olaf took the stage at Great Hollow Middle School the week of March 28. After a pair of dress rehearsals, the cast is set to the musical perform “Frozen” inside the school’s auditorium on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The performers trained for months for their roles.

“A Scout Is Helpful” Written by Troop 125 Boy Scout Ethan Newman The Boy Scouts live by a 12-point law. One of those points is to be kind. This year, two scouts from Trop 125 raised over $1,700 for St. Baldrick’s. This year’s fundraiser was held at the Miller’s Ale House on 88 Veterans Memorial Highway in Commack from12-4pm .

Saint Baldrick’s is a foundation devoted to raising money to help fund research on childhood cancer. In order to raise money and awareness, people volunteer to shave their

heads in solidarity with those sick with cancer.

The Boy Scouts who got their heads shaved were Scouts Ethan N. and Wyatt B. and as a show of support to the scouts, also Assistant Scoutmaster Dominic Zafonte. This was the 7th year that Team Captain Wyatt B. shaved his head for St. Baldrick’s, making him a “Knight of the Round Table.” As the top fundraiser on the team, Ethan N. was given the honor of throwing a pie at Scoutmaster Keith Burger.

Explained Boy Scout Ethan N., “I personally decided to do St.

Baldrick’s because I had heard in the past that it was a good cause. It really is an amazing charity and I am probably going to do it again next year.”

Boy Scout Troop 125 is a boy-run troop that meets every Tuesday from 7:30-9:00 pm at the Commack United Methodist Church (486 Town Line Road, Commack) and is open to boys who are 11 through 18-years old and who live in Commack, East Northport, Huntington, Dix Hills, Kings Park, and surrounding areas.

Stating that today’s headlines about Russia’s war on Ukraine were written some 80 years ago as a grim legacy of World War II, the Museum of American Armor, the Long Island Living History Association (LILHA) and Nassau County Department of Parks, Recreation & Museums will conduct a joint educational field program that will allow thousands of Long Island high school students to strengthen their understanding of World War II and the shadow it continues to cast nearly a century later.

Donate To Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly’s Pet Food Drive Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Huntington Station) is pleased to again join Long Island Cares and help it “rain food for cats and dogs” by hosting a pet food drive now through the end of May. Legislator Donnelly’s district office is serving

as a drop-off location for the 11th Legislative Pet Food Drive where much-needed pet food and supplies will be collected to benefit Baxter’s Pet Pantry of Long Island Cares ( w w w. l i c a r e s . o r g ) .

In previous years, constituents of the 17th Legislative District have

generously donated to this annual drive.

All donations go directly to Baxter’s Pantry. While 5 and 10 pound bags of dog and cat food, canned food, kitty litter and new pet toys are most needed, all pet nourishments are welcome including food for hamsters, fish,

birds and ferrets.

Items may be dropped off at Legislator Donnelly’s District Office, located at 130 West Jericho Turnpike in Huntington Station, Monday through Friday between the hours of 9 am and 4 pm until May 31. As per health code requirements,

all pet food must be unopened and in original packaging. For more information or to make an appointment to donate outside of these hours, call (631) 854-4433.

all members of the family,” said Legislator Donnelly.
