Smithtown Town Board Unanimously Approves Tax Exemption For Seniors Living On A Limited Income

The Town of Smithtown Town Board voted unanimously to expand a partial real property tax exemption for senior citizens living on a limited income. The amendment, passed during the February 16th, 2023 Town Board meeting, removed outdated information and increased the amount of the maximum income of a person entitled to the exemption to as much as $58,400 as of July 1, 2022. Notice of the updated partial real property tax exemption was sent via mail to potentially eligible homeowners.

“Our hope is that this change will provide relief to our seniors, so that they may enjoy retirement without undue stress. Times have been especially tough for our senior residents living on a fixed income. The pandemic, the cost of inflation, oil and gas

have all inevitably resulted in unforeseen expenses, which can make living on a fixed income especially difficult for seniors. Increasing the maximum income to as high as $58,400, so that residents over the age of 65 can take advantage of the partial tax exemption, can help to alleviate some of this burden.”

Senior residents, over the age of 65, making an annual income of no more than $58,400 (beginning as of July 1, 2022) are eligible to apply for the partial tax exemption. Thereafter at the percentage of assessed valuation thereof as determined by the following schedule, with the amount for each year represented as (M), pursuant to the provisions of § 467 of the Real Property Tax Law. (M) equals $50,000.

New York State Senator Monica R. Martinez Introduces Legislation To Provide Increased Protections For Wild And Exotic Animals

Senator Monica R. Martinez introduced bill S6211 which establishes a definition for exotic animals and expands the existing definition of wild animals.

The bill further prohibits exotic animals from being

harbored, traded, imported, sold or owned as pets in the same way as wild animals.

“Wild and exotic animals require specific conditions and environments to survive.

The habitats in which these animals live in the wild are

far from conditions that exist in New York. Any business operating with the intent of profiting by selling these exotic animals should be held accountable under the law for the unethical treatment of animals,” stated

The bill clearly defines a wild animal as an indigenous, non-domesticated animal native to the country in which they live, and an exotic animal as a wild animal with an origin of a different continent. The bill further lists all families and orders that would be protected some of which include sloths, kangaroos, hyenas, elephants, wallabies and armadillos. This bill has swiftly garnered support from a number of organizations.

John Di Leonardo, Anthrozoologist and Executive Director of Humane Long Island said, “Humane Long Island applauds Senator Martinez for introducing essential legislation to amend New York State’s prohibition on keeping wild animals to include exotic animals such as sloths and kangaroos. Sloths are tree-dwelling,

tropical animals with sharp teeth and four-inch claws. They are mostly deaf and nearly blind when exposed to bright light. Red kangaroos are the largest marsupial in the world, growing up to 6ft tall and weighing up to 200lbs. A pet Gray kangaroo, which is roughly half the size of a Red kangaroo, made international news last year after he killed his owner and blocked paramedics from reaching him before being shot dead by the police. Wild animals are not pets and treating them like dogs or cats endangers children and animals alike.”

Edita Birnkrant, Executive Director of NYCLASS said, “NYCLASS is thrilled that NY State Senator Martinez has introduced much-needed legislation to expand the definition of ‘wild’ animals prohibited from being imported, sold or owned in New York. This important bill will

prevent thousands of nonnative animals from being exploited and endangered by wildlife traffickers recklessly selling these animals to New Yorkers who may not understand that animals such as sloths, kangaroos, ostriches, emus and many others should never be pets. NYCLASS strongly supports the passage of this bill and will work with the Senator to help enact it into law.”

It is inhumane and unethical for wild and exotic animals to be sold or kept as pets in New York State. These are not animals that should be closely interacting with people on a daily basis,” stated Senator Martinez.

This bill would not apply to zoological facilities, wildlife sanctuaries and other exclusions under current law.

Global Youth Service Day Volunteer Fair And Toiletry Drive

The Town of Smithtown Youth Bureau will join more than 135 countries across the globe in celebration of Global Youth Service Day. On April 22nd, the Youth Bureau will hold a Volunteer Fair and Toiletry Drive from 12:30PM to 3:30PM. This event will take place in the Community Room of the Smithtown Library, located at 1 N Country Road in Smithtown. This Global Youth Service Day Initiative is being hosted by the Town of Smithtown Youth Bureau on behalf of the Smithtown Children’s Foundation and local temporary housing facilities.

Students have the opportunity to earn up to three hours of community service credit by collecting and donating certain personal care items that are in great need. The full list of required items can be viewed on the flyer.

Middle School and High School student volunteers are also needed to assist during the Global Youth Service Day Event. Student volunteer tasks will include accepting donations, information tabling, sorting donations, and assembling donation bags. Students will earn community service credit for their time spent volunteering.

Long Island (RTLI) is a nonprofit organization, headquartered in Farmingdale, serving Nassau County and most of Su olk County. As an a liate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together, their mission is repairing homes, revitalizing communities and rebuilding lives.

To accomplish their vision of safe and healthy homes for everyone, they provide free essential home safety repairs and modifications for economicallydisadvantaged homeowners, whether they are older adults, veterans, families or persons with a disability or limited mobility.

Although RTLI’s teams work year round, April is a particularly important month because it is National Rebuilding Month. “Too many Americans su er from the health and economic consequences of living in substandard housing and under served communities,” said Caroline Blakely, President & CEO of Rebuilding Together. “National Rebuilding Month serves as an annual month-long call to service to encourage people to support their neighbors, strengthen their community and ensure everyone is living in safe and healthy homes.”

RTLI together with its 120 sister a liates will all look to surpass last year’s accomplishment of working with over 13,000 volunteers to repair close to 800 homes and over 150 community centers nationwide. As you drive around Long Island, watch for RTLI’s lawn signs. If you see one, you will know their volunteers are hard at work helping someone who needs a helping hand.

Once accepted into the program, each home receives a safety check of every room. Each home has its own challenges. RTLI also listens to the homeowner to determine their priorities. Hazards and unsafe conditions are noted and given to the volunteer crews so they can prepare a materials list and then

get to work. Minor plumbing and electrical repairs may be made, but they may also do weatherization, flooring (if the current floor is a hazard), sheet rock repair and a myriad of other repairs. If someone has limited mobility, a wheelchair ramp may be constructed, grab bars and railings installed, doorways widened where possible to accommodate a wheelchair. Conversions of bathtubs to walk-in showers can also be done and under certain circumstances, a stair glide may be installed. While RTLI cannot always take care of every issue in the home, they will tell you that every home they work on is left safer than is was and the lives of its residents are improved when the project is complete! So how can you help?

•If you know someone who may benefit from their services, have them call the RTLI o ce at 631.777.7894, Monday – Friday, to see if they qualify for the free program.

•Join the RTLI team! Volunteers can sign up at rebuildingtogetherli.org/ volunteer-today. Currently they are looking for individuals who are fluent in Spanish and for an o ce person, particularly if they are familiar with Salesforce. Additionally, if you are handy with tools, the Nassau and Su olk crew teams are always looking for more help.

•Donate at rebuildingtogetherli. org. RTLI relies on the donations of our neighbors, some grants and corporate sponsorships, as they do not receive any government funding.

•RTLI encourages local business to get involved and sponsor a project. The organization can find the right project for your business to sponsor and you can then promote your generosity on social media to show your commitment to improving the health and safety of someone in need locally.

Students at Tackan Elementary School had a loud, fun and informative morning on March 13. That’s because Sparky of the New York Islanders along with Islanders Assembly host Denise last name?? spoke to students about the importance of making smart decisions, eating healthy, staying active as well as treating others with respect.

During this interactive assembly, the Islanders helped students realize why being committed to making smart decisions is important in school and life. Students participated in a variety of warmup activities and morning exercises with the guidance of Sparky. Then, they participated in a fun interactive teamwork activity — dressing one individual in goalie equipment. The team who best used teamwork was rewarded.

The annual report cited a growing tax base, strong economic wealth metrics, consistent operating results and robust fiscal position. Highlights from Moody’s Credit Opinion focus on the administration’s steady management and efforts to advance the tax base, which is anchored by the Long Island Innovation Park at Hauppauge, and benefits from the proximity of Stony Brook University. Additionally, the AAA bond rating validates the success of major capital investments orchestrated by Smithtown’s administration, while maintaining a structurally balanced operating budget and healthy reserves.

Avenue Business District Revitalization, three offstreet parking lots in the downtown areas, and the new entryway to the Long Island Innovation Park and the regional fueling facility. Additionally, the Town has made substantial investments in protecting our environment and waterways, with the acquisition of land at the headwaters of the Nissequogue River, major drainage and culvert rehabilitation, and clean energy initiatives. Each undertaking has benefited the community, which is reflected in the Town’s increased assessments, or a growing tax base.

Friends Of America’s Vet Dogs Chinese Auction Fundraiser April 15

A local volunteer community service group, whose mission is to provide service dogs to assist veteransin-need, recently donated $12,700 to America’s Vet Dogs – sponsoring two more service dogs.

“Friends of America’s Vet Dogs” started in 2015 and

has successfully sponsored 31 highly trained service dogs for veterans since. The group carefully names each dog to honor an unsung hero of our military, to honor someone who brought great credit to our military or to recognize someone who significantly helped veterans-in-need.

Their most recent donation enabled the sponsoring of Service Dogs ‘Tammy’ and ‘Kyle’. In 2016 the group sponsored and named Service Dog ‘Sully’, who went on to serve President George W. Bush. ‘Sully’ now continues to serve wounded veterans at Walter Reed Military Medical

Center in Bethesda, Maryland.

Trotta Hosts Annual Pet Food Drive

Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta is participating in the 12th Annual Legislative Food Drive Challenge to collect pet food for the clients of Long Island Cares. Since 2009, Long Island Cares has provided free pet food and supplies to individuals and families in need, in an effort to enable them to keep their pets at home instead of placing them in shelters.

Legislator Trotta pointed out that, according to Long Island Cares, dog and cat food are the most requested items by their member agencies. “I would be most appreciative if the generous residents and pet lovers in my district would help out,” said Legislator Trotta.

The pet pantry is in need of canned and dry cat/ dog food, cat/dog treats, birdseed, and food for fish,

rabbits, and ferrets, as well as kitty litter and small new toys. The drive is from now until the end of April, and donations may be brought to Legislator Trotta’s district office at 59 Landing Avenue, Suite 1 (Blue Door), Smithtown, NY. Historically High Fuel Prices

Historically high fuel prices will undoubtedly prove to be one of the defining stories of 2022. As the average price for

a gallon of gas reached heights drivers might never have imagined as recently as February 2022, some might have

wondered just how much that same gallon might have cost roughly 100 years ago. According to the Office of Energy

Efficiency & Renewable Energy, the average price for a gallon of gas in 1929 was 21 cents. Inflation calculators indicate

that 21 cents in 1929 would have about the same purchasing power as $3.59 has in 2022, suggesting that drivers

had a far less painful trip to the pump in 1929 than they have had for much of 2022.
