to a bird’s shape. They additionally learned how airplanes create lift, since they do not flap their wings, including why a wing is curved on its top and flat on the bottom. And they learned the basics of why of parachute works, including how it creates resistance with the air.

Legislator Leslie Kennedy would like to remind residents that spring is already here, and with it, tick season. In Suffolk County, we have three species of ticks to be careful of, namely: the Blacklegged Tick, the Lone Star Tick and the American Dog Tick. Black Legged Ticks The Black Legged Tick (deer tick) can spread Lyme disease, Anaplasmosis, and Babesiosis. Lyme disease is by far the most common and can cause complications such as recurring swelling, painful joints, temporary facial paralysis and/or heart problems if left untreated.
A characteristic sign of Lyme disease is a red circular rash that may appear a few days to a month at the site of the bite. This occurs in approximately 60%-80% of cases. American Dog Tick The American Dog Tick typically transmits Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF) and Tularemia. RMSF is characterized by a sudden onset of moderate to high fever, severe headache, deep muscle tissue pain, chills and rash. Lone Star Tick These ticks cause four main diseases, but the most recent one that has been making headlines is called Alpha-gal. Alpha-gal is
a red meat allergy thought to be caused by bites of Lone Star Ticks. Symptoms may start 3-6 hours after consuming red meat and may include severe itching, hives and, in severe cases, cramping, vomiting, diarrhea, wheezing, shortness of breath and loss of consciousness. Personal Protection You can protect yourself from Lyme’s Disease and other tick borne illnesses through the follow simple steps: -Wear light-colored clothing -Wear long pants and sleeves -Tuck your pants into your socks -Tuck you shirt into your pants
-Use tick repellent as directed -Walk along the center of the trail -Conduct frequent clothing checks -Once home, dry clothes on the highest setting for at least 10 minutes to kill any ticks -Carefully inspect your body for ticks -Keep pets from tick infested areas and check them before entering the house Suggestions For Homeowners Ticks do not jump, fly or fall from trees. They crawl close to the ground on leaves, brush and tall grasses. Homeowners should keep lawns mowed, and bushes cut back, remove debris and move children’s toys away from the edges of yards.

The Charity of the Month for March is
YES Community Counseling Center www.yesccc.org
The opioid epidemic has highlighted that all ages, socio-economic backgrounds, and all communities can be profoundly vulnerable to addiction. YES Community Counseling Center has been providing both addiction treatment and prevention services for the past three decades with the understanding that the needs of each individual is uniquely different and therefore, treatment must also be individualized and utilize a variety of approaches.
YES Community Counseling Center’s addiction treatment services are comprehensive and approaches are based upon the developmental stage and readiness of each individual. Under the supervision of the agency’s Medical Director, specializes in evidence based services which are available for adolescents, young adults, adults and family members, including: •Adolescent Family Program (AFP) •Young Adult groups •Impaired driver evaluations and treatment •Moral Reconation Therapy for those who are legally involved (MRT) •Recovery groups •Trauma focused therapies •Parent and significant other support groups •Educational groups
It is also understood that most often, family members are deeply affected by addiction and require support and well as an understanding the complexities of the disease and how to support a loved one through their recovery. Early education about addiction is critical along with early interventions that build individual, family and community protective factors to reduce the likelihood of young people resorting to substances to cope with life’s challenges. In light of marijuana legalization, it is so important that parents learn the detrimental effects of all substances on the developing brain. In addition to prevention services within the local schools and community, YES CCC offers early intervention

Outdoor 1.5-Mile Stations Of The Cross Walking Service Returns To Catholic Cemeteries Of Long Island
Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island is welcoming back its annual tradition of in-person walking of the Stations of the Cross prayer services at the Cemetery of the Holy Rood in Westbury on one of the most solemn days of the Christian calendar during the 2022 Lenten season. One of the largest attended events for Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island, Catholic faithful across Long Island are invited to return and take part in the tradition of following a 1.5-mile walking route throughout Holy Rood to commemorate Christ’s redemptive sacrifice through 14 stations each year on Good Friday, which is April 15th this year. Each station is signified by a different cross/sculpture at the cemetery. Deacons from Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island will assist in leading the service for attendees. The Stations of the Cross walking services were cancelled each of the past two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This year, hundreds are expected to take part in the Good Friday services. Faithful can also experience Holy Rood’s Stations of the Cross on their own with self-directed tours or via a virtual option for those who wish to partake from their homes.
The Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island’s Virtual Stations of the Cross can be viewed by visiting YouTube at the following link: Virtual Stations of the Cross Video. Faithful utilizing the self-directed option who are walking the Stations of the Cross on their own can download the Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island Stations of the Cross Prayer Booklet as a guide with specific prayers at each station: Stations of the Cross Prayers – Easy Print Format Stations of the Cross Prayers – Foldable Booklet Format Prayer booklets may also be picked up at Holy Rood Chapel. The Cemetery of the Holy Rood, located at 111 Old Country Road in Westbury, is open every day from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the Chapel closing at 4:30 p.m. daily. “Due to restrictions relating to the pandemic over the past two years, we offered a virtual Stations of the Cross for those wishing to follow in the footsteps of Jesus during his journey to Calvary. It is necessary to offer families the opportunity to connect with our Lord’s sacrifice which leads to his triumph over death and the promise of eternal life. Our
in-person Stations of the Cross services – both guided with our deacons and selfdirected – are back for 2022 as we expect large numbers of faithful to attend,” said Richard Bie, President/CEO of Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island. Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island owns and operates four cemeteries across Long Island including Cemetery of the Holy Rood in Westbury, Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Coram, Queen of All Saints Cemetery in Central Islip and Queen of Peace Cemetery in Old Westbury. Queen of Peace is the first new Catholic cemetery to open on Long Island in decades and its chapel is expect to completed by the summer of 2022. Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island is dedicated to meeting both the spiritual and physical needs of the more than 1.4 million Catholics across the Diocese of Rockville Centre, which encompasses Nassau and Suffolk counties on Long Island, NY. Battle Of The Towns: Smithtown Vs Riverhead
Smithtown Food Pantry last year, Pat Westlake walked us through her plans for the donation. This was essentially the construction of a popup market, designed by Enspire Design Group (St. James, NY) Principal Architect & Founder Michael Morbillo. The market gives local families in need the shopping experience while allowing families to choose products based on nutritional needs and preferences. I have all the confidence in our great community that we’ll double last year’s donation so that the Food Pantry can complete this incredible new addition!” -Supervisor Ed Wehrheim The Kilter App allows participants to keep track of daily activity, be it a morning walk, bikeride, yoga, meditation, or an afternoon filled with volunteering, advocacy or simply walking with the four-legged family member. Participants then earn points daily for all health and wellness related activities, which are then tallied towards helping the Township win. The Registration fee ($25) serves as a donation, which goes to the Smithtown Food Pantry. Additional opportunities to fundraise or donate will
be available throughout the duration of the event. Upon the completion of the Battle of the Towns, residents may continue to use the Kilter App to track personal health or fitness goals. How to Register: -Register & Pay the $25 registration fee at h t t p s : / / w w w. kilterrewards.com/events/ battle-of-the-towns-2022 -Download the FREE Kilter app to your mobile devices -Choose Sign In (top right) -Go to the Events tab > My Events (you’re already registered!) -Complete your profile and connect your devices! -Share! Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta Hosts Annual Pet Food Drive Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta is participating in the 11th Annual Legislative Food Drive Challenge to collect pet food for the clients of Long Island Cares. Since 2009, Long Island Cares has provided free pet food and supplies to individuals and families in need, in an effort to enable them to keep their pets at home instead of placing them in shelters. Legislator Trotta pointed out that, according to
Long Island Cares, dog and cat food are the most requested items by their member agencies. “Pets keep many people going, giving them comfort and a reason to survive in difficult times, especially now with many people coping with the effects of COVID-19. I am asking the kind and generous residents and pet lovers in my district to help out. Last year we collected about 1,000 pounds of pet food,” said Legislator
Trotta. The pet pantry is in need of canned and dry cat/ dog food, cat/dog treats, birdseed, and food for fish, rabbits, and ferrets, as well as kitty litter and small new toys. The drive is from now until May 1. Donations may be dropped off, Monday through Friday, from 9am - 4pm, at Legislator Trotta’s office, 59 Landing Avenue, Suite 1, Smithtown. Many of these are provided by sponsor Clowns. com. According to Barbara Kaplan, director of the expo, “every year, this fabulous children’s expo has many draws for Long Island families,

and this year will be no different.” The All Kids Fair will have over 70 vendors, including camps, places to play, after-school activities, birthday party providers, and college planning. This fun-filled event offers exciting educational and leisure activities to interest kids and their families each year. The Fair has opportunities for all ages, including kids who have special needs. Families can interact inperson with exhibitors in a huge space, with vendors set further apart and with the activity areas in designated open areas rather than in breakout rooms. Attendee Jonathan Morris shared “The All Kids Fair is a great resource for new parents and old parents alike showcasing many different vendors with great ideas and opportunities for all families.” Jennifer Keegan of Your Local Kids Source, a multiyear sponsor and exhibitor, previously shared that she “had a great time at the All Kids Fair meeting tons of Long Island parents and enjoying all the smiling faces
on all the happy kids.” A charity drive to benefit The Book Fairies, a 501c3 that provides books to those in need, will return this year. Those who donate gently used or new books or money will receive raffle tickets to win great donated prizes. Sponsors for the 2022 All Kids Fair are All in 1 SPOT with TheraTalk, Adam Holstein, Goldfish Swim School, Kweller Prep, Teach Me Wall Street, You & Me By the Sea Travel, Clowns.com, Saf-T-Swim, Dave & Buster’s, WildPlay Jones Beach, Your Local Kids Source, Blank Slate Media, Herald Community Newspapers, and 516Ads. com/631Ads.com. Tickets purchased in advance at www.AllKidsFair. com are $5 for children ages 2 and up and adults. Tickets purchased at the door are $10 for children ages 2 and up and $5 for adults. Children 1 and younger are admitted at no charge. About the All Kids Fair The All Kids Fair is an annual event organized by Specialty Connections. Spring Family Fishing Festival The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (State Parks) will hold the annual Spring Family Fishing Festival on Saturday, April 2, at Belmont Lake State Park. Additional sponsors for the fishing festival include the Natural Heritage Trust, The Fisherman Magazine, New York Life, Seaford Knights of Columbus Fishing Club, Art Flick Chapter Trout Unlimited, and radio stations 106.1 WBLI and 102.3 WBAB. “Freshwater fishing is an activity the whole family can enjoy, especially on Long Island,” Regional Director Cathy Haas said. “The Spring Fishing Festival at Belmont Lake State Park is an excellent way to kick off the fishing season and introduce family and friends to the sport with no license needed. Festival attendees can learn about freshwater fishing opportunities on Long Island and try their hand at fishing for trout while kids can participate in the casting contest and other fun activities.” “Fishing is a great way for New Yorkers to enjoy the outdoors and appreciate the environment,” said State Parks Long Island Regional Director George Gorman Jr. “I encourage anglers of all ages to discover what a great place Belmont Lake State Park is to try fishing.”
Festival activities begin at 10 a.m., and are provided free of charge. Activities include open fishing, casting instruction, rod use, fish identification, fishing instruction, fly-casting demonstrations, and a fish cleaning station. DEC and local fishing clubs will host informational displays and loaner rods and free bait will be available to participants. The supply of loaner rods is limited and participants are encouraged to bring their own fishing tackle if possible. Children’s activities include the “Spring Fling” casting contest, as well as hands-on educational displays by DEC’s Education Unit. Children participating in the casting contest will have a chance to win prizes supplied by DEC’s I FISH NY Program. This event will be held rain or shine. The Spring Fishing Festival is designated as a Free Fishing Event, so the freshwater fishing license requirement for anglers ages 16 and older is suspended for this event only. After 4 p.m., anglers will need a valid State freshwater fishing license to legally fish. All fishing regulations will continue to apply. A vehicle use fee of $8 will be in effect. Parking is free for Empire Pass holders. The 2022 Empire Pass can be purchased for $80 at State Park offices or online. The festival highlights DEC’s spring trout stocking program in Nassau and
Suffolk counties. Prior to the festival, DEC will stock Belmont Lake with nearly 1,000 brown and brook trout. Additional brook and rainbow trout will be stocked by State Parks. DEC will also stock Upper Twin Pond in Wantagh, Oyster Bay Mill Pond, and Massapequa Creek and Reservoir, along with 14 other Long Island lakes with trout before April 1, providing excellent prospects for spring fishing. In total, DEC’s spring stocking program, conducted by regional freshwater fisheries staff, staff from DEC’s Catskill Fish Hatchery, and volunteers, will place 20,000 brown trout and rainbow trout in ponds and streams in Nassau and Suffolk counties. A complete list of DEC fish stocking can be found on DEC’s website. Anglers are reminded that trout fishing season on Long Island is year-round for most lakes and streams. There is a daily limit of three fish per person. Spring trout stocking begins in midMarch and will be completed by early May. For more information, call I FISH NY at (631) 4440283 or Belmont Lake State Park at (631) 667-5055, or visit DEC’s Learn to Fish webpage. For information about freshwater fishing on Long Island or the spring trout stocking program in Nassau and Suffolk counties, call the DEC Bureau of Fisheries at (631) 4440280, or e-mail the regional fisheries office.

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce that “Fly Casting Clinics” and instructional courses will be offered at two Long Island State Parks. The Long Island Chapter of Trout Unlimited will be conducting two clinics on “Basic Fly Casting”, one on Saturday, April 2nd at Connetquot River State Park Preserve in Oakdale and one on Saturday, April 9th at Caleb Smith State Park Preserve in Smithtown. The clinics will be held rain or shine, from 10:00AM – 1:00PM, and are open to everyone 16 years and older. If you own fly fishing equipment, bring it with you, but it is not required to attend. Clinic topics will include
basic casting instructions, equipment needs and selection, conservation, and safety techniques. Reservations are required and accepted beginning two weeks prior to each clinic. There is no registration fee, however, there will be an $8.00 vehicle use fee in effect. The Long Island State Park Region also operates Nissequogue River Fly Fishing School at Caleb Smith State Park Preserve. The school offers a series of ongoing instructional classes for groups and individuals in basic to advance freshwater and saltwater fly fishing and casting techniques, stream entomology, and still water (pond) techniques. Please call (631) 265-1054 for current program and fee schedules. To register for the clinics,
or for further information on the school, please call Caleb Smith State Park Preserve at (631) 265-1054 or Connetquot River State Park Preserve at (631) 581-1005, Tuesday through Sunday from 8:00AM-4:00PM or leave a message on Mondays or after hours. The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation oversees more than 250 parks, historic sites, recreational trails, golf courses, boat launches and more, which are visited by 78 million people annually.
