Postscript By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I want to begin by expressing my sincere appreciation to all those readers who took the time to reach out in the last week to express condolences on the passing of my “Pal,” to relate to the sense of loss, to the closeness felt… but, mostly, to comment on how fortunate I was to share such a special bond with my grandfather and develop so many wonderful memories through the years. It is with that sentiment that I choose to pick up this week’s column. Rather than dwell in the sadness, I choose to reflect with a smile – on the love, the laughter, the photo albums, the video footage, the small possessions that embody much larger stories –

all the components that make pile of “unattributed” wisdom up a life well-lived. we all love to call upon from time to time. No matter the Family is precious. We source, the message is clear. know this, of course; but And so, we smile. We reflect. I think we tend to forget just how meaningful those We shed a happy tear here and connections are from time to there. But, most importantly, time. Only when called upon we remember. We remember to reflect are we reminded those times of our lives fondness, knowing how lucky we are to have such with a close-knit network of people that, one day, these very supporting us. The Easter feast does not call for sentimentality; it is known for fun in legend and in reality. In Christian faith, it blesses the resurrection; old customs show bunnies in Easter egg action. Some countries favor a Cuckoo or Fox to spread joy; kids do love this suspension be it girl or boy. Eggs represents the symbol of fertility and new life. Hares and rabbits show to multiply a real strong drive. To assist in the festivities, the Easter bunny was born, kept busy with hiding fancy eggs in pastures of corn.

The participants took part in a variety of training and interactive sessions. As a part of the exciting and fun-filled learning and shared-experiences opportunities for the all Scouting volunteer adult leaders, various demonstrations, exhibits, a “midway” of demos and sales offerings, as well as awards/recognitions ceremonies with presentations. The Scout leaders participated in learning about topics such as utilization of the “PJ Our Way” program in Scouting by Saskia Moss (participating via Skype from Israel), an update

on the National Jewish Committee on Scouting activities by the National JCOS Chairman Bruce Chudakoff (via Skype from Florida), the JCOS planned events and participation at the 2017 National Scout Jamboree at The Summit in West Virginia, a Kosher Camp Cooking demo and exhibit, a session on “Flora, Fauna, and Torah” (aka stories from Rabbi Rachmiel Tobesman of Baltimore relating the flora/fauna studied in Scouting’s outdoor focus to the Torah). National JCOS Committee Members presented a session on the celebration of 90 years of Jewish Scouting in America and the special exhibit in place at the Greater New York City Council’s Ten Mile River Scout Camp’s Museum. All of the classes were

instructed and run by volunteer Scouters. Jeffrey Cohen of the National Capitol Area Council presented an impromptu overview of the local efforts he has been coordinating with Abdul Rashid Abdullah of the Islamic Committee on Scouting (NCAC) and Lola Arjona (BSA NCAC & Girl Scouts Council of the Nation’s Capital Area) under the auspices of the Messengers of Peace. Former Northeast Region JCOS Chairman Jeff Goldsmith announced that these efforts and the ongoing partnership by the local Jewish and Islamic Committees on Scouting were awarded unanimously by the BSA Northeast Region Relationships Committee with the annual Relationships Award.

Students and staff showed off their Commack Pride and had a lot of fun celebrating Spirit Week at Commack Middle School from March 14th-18th. Spirit Week kicked off with Comfy Cozy Day and ended on Friday with school color day (gold and black). Tuesday’s theme was Team Jersey Day, Wednesday was Wacky Wednesday and Thursday was St. Patrick’s Day Green. For the eighth graders, the week ended with the much anticipated annual

Gold and White Night competition. The grade splits into two teams and the highly charged teams compete in races, pyramids, dance routines, and other exciting events. Teamwork and sportsmanship are emphasized, and the evening ends with the announcement of the winners of the annual Shana Kay Sportsmanship Award. Chosen by their physical education teachers and coaches, the 2015-2016 winners (photo) are eighth graders

Commack graduate Shana Kay died in 2005 at age 19 after contracting encephalitis, a viral infection that causes inflammation of the brain. “Shana embodied the essence of the award,” said physical education teacher Theresa Bassett. The award helps us remember her and remember what she stood for.”

Hospital Beautiﬁcation Shanian’s foundation art class at Smithtown High School East were asked to design a photo montage using their own photos, while editing and composing in Adobe Photoshop. These digital paintings were printed on acrylic to enhance the beautiful colors, and are on display outside the surgical unit at St. Catherine of Siena. Ms. Shanian’s painting I art students were given

the challenge to arrive at a visual solution that centered on the Industrial Revolution in the form of a single painting or diptych. After doing research on this time period, followed by several sketches, each artist arrived at a unique composition. These diverse and interesting acrylic paintings are also on exhibit at St. Catherine of Siena in a tunnel-like hallway.

Bubbling with Knowledge Kindergartners at Tackan Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District learned all about bubbles when representatives visited from the Long Island Children’s Museum on March 11th. The students learned

all about bubbles, what bubbles are made of, what shape they are, the colors they can see in bubbles, the secret to holding a bubble in their hands and how to blow a large bubble. They were also able to experiment with bubbles through three stations –

using different objects like hangers, potato mashers, bubble wands, star-shaped objects and whisks to blow bubbles; creating bubble paintings; and using bubble pumps to create a tower of bubbles.

On February 20th and February 27th, from Boys Scouts from Boy Scout Troop 343 (Hauppauge) and Webelos Cub Scouts from Cub Scout Pack 328 (Hauppauge), teamed up with the “Peanut Butter Gangs Hospitality Too” Soup Kitchen located at St. Anne’s Church in Brentwood. The scouts assisted with serving food to the community’s needy family members as well as joining in with the making of Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwiches, packing bags of breads and cakes and distributing the bags to the guests, and cleaning up the community room where

they’d served the lunches. Coordinated by Boy Scout Troop 343 Assistant Scoutmaster Maureen Massa on February 20th, the Boy Scouts who helped out were Paul Massa, Scott Petersen, Ryan DiSilvio, and Ian McAlister. The American Parkinson Disease Association, Inc. (APDA) is hard at work in Suffolk County helping to “Ease the Burden and Find the Cure.” Founded more than 54 years ago, the APDA continues to help those affected by this disease. The American Parkinson Disease Association Information & Referral Center of Suffolk County offers support groups, educational events, literature and referrals to those afflicted with Parkinson Disease. “Parkinson Disease can be devastating to those who are afflicted and their families,” says Julie Garofalo, R.N., Coordinator for the APDA Information & Referral Center located at St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown. “There has been extensive research within the past 10 years, leading to more medications and surgical treatments to help reduce the symptoms of Parkinson disease, but, there is still no cure.” More research is needed, she said. Sewing Makes Cents Three sixth-graders from Nesaquake Middle School in the Smithtown Central School District are using their learned skills to help raise money for an animal rescue organization. Alice Cheselka’s Family and Consumer Science class is learning how to sew on a sewing machine.

Three students in the class – Imogen Irons, Lauren Kaplan and Payton Zografikas – are using their newly acquired skills to make dog bandanas. All of the money raised from the sale of the bandanas will be donated to Guardians of Rescue, a no-kill rescue organization located in

Smithtown. “The students cannot wait to make more; they are having so much fun with this project,” Mrs. Cheselka said. The bandanas are being sold in the school library for $6 each or two for $10.
