I needed to do. I told. I told my mom to tell her mom to get her to a therapist. What I didn’t do is tell her secret. I never break my promises. I just told her she was getting bullied and cutting. But this, to any parent, is traumatizing. Long story short, it took three years, but I got her through it. But what does this have to do with heroes? Well, now I consider myself a hero. So does my friend. I’ll never forget the day I got the text: thanks for saving my life. Not to be selfish, but what I did took guts and time. I selflessly got my friend through, by far, the roughest time of her life. I think I am a hero. What I’m trying to say is that even the stupidest thing can keep someone from self-harm. Even the happiest of people go through depression. Please be kind to others, and be a hero by simply listening.

HOW TO BE A HERO going through. I just never knew that person would be my best friend. She had some problems. She lives about thirty to forty-five minutes away from me. We didn’t go to the same school, nor have any mutual friends. We met through our parents. I never knew how close I could grow to someone who lived so far. We can talk for hours. Well, when talking for hours, you run out of things to say. When I asked how school was, I knew it was the worst and best thing I could ask. She admitted she constantly felt uncomfortable in school. She was jealous of all her peers’ happiness. Her parents were fighting a lot, she was bullied, and there was also the secret. This secret was one I knew for a long time and promised to keep to this day. Let’s just say it got to her. She became depressed and cut herself. I, being the friend I am, did what

We all know the definition of a hero: A courageous person who helps others without thinking of him or herself or the consequences that may follow. Also, everyone under the sun knows heroes are brave, selfless, caring, etc. But, have you ever thought maybe that’s just not enough? How can something so incredibly important to society have such a short definition and description? That’s because it’s wrong. A hero is an ordinary person who can and will go out of his or her way to help, care and solve people’s problems .... basically, anyone. Reaching Their Goal Magnificent Voices, a self-advocacy group at AHRC Suffolk comprised of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, made the decision to become more involved in their community by making a difference in the life of a child. What better way to do this than to partner with Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Long Island (BBBSLI) for a clothing drive?

BBBSLI set Magnificent Voices’ goal at 200 bags of clothing; if they reached that goal it would provide BBBSLI with the funding needed to match an “at risk” child facing adversity with a caring, screened adult mentor. The group exceeded their goal by collecting over 240 bags of clothing from all of AHRC Suffolk’s day programs across the Suffolk County, making them the first organization to reach their

goal with BBBSLI for 2015. “I am happy because we are helping the community and Big Brothers Big Sisters will help children,” said Michael Kelly, Magnificent Voices Member. Magnificent Voices is using projects like this to get more involved in their communities and to find platforms to become better advocates for themselves and others. They are working together to create

community connections that will further their reach and their mission. Being a part of this group and being involved in these projects has helped its members find their voices. “It’s important to speak up for yourself and we learn that,” said Peter Hathaway, regarding Magnificent Voices. “It’s good to help other people out and it’s important.” By holding this clothing drive, Magnificent Voices

Senior Scholars Hauppauge School District is pleased to announce that High School Seniors Matthew Fortmeyer, Stephen Kim and Daniel Nasta have been named National Merit Finalists in the 60th Annual National Merit Scholarship Program (NMSC). To become a National Merit Finalist, students must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by the school principal and earn SAT scores that confirm their performance on the PSAT.

According to the NMSC, approximately 15,000 finalists are selected each year out of a pool of more than 1.5 million high school seniors from across the country due to their exemplary performance on the Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Beginning in March 2015, NMSC will notify 8,000 of the remaining 15,000 competition Finalists that they have been chosen as winners of the competition and thus will gain access to three types of National Merit Scholarships available

to competition winners. Those scholarships include: 2,500 National Merit $2,500 scholarships, approximately 1,000 corporate-sponsored scholarships, and about 4,500 college-sponsored scholarships. “The entire Hauppauge School District community is honored to congratulate Matthew Fortmeyer, Stephen Kim and Daniel Nasta on being named National Merit Finalists,” stated Hauppauge High School Principal Christine O’Connor.

On February 26th, many Smithtown residents attended the Town Board Meeting and strongly voiced their concerns, angers and frustrations over how poorly their Smithtown Animal Shelter has been operating. The animal activists strongly believe that the current Director of the shelter, Mr. Beatty, is unqualified, uncaring, negligent and incompetent. Along with mistreating the animals, Mr. Beatty has been accused of mistreating some employees as well as volunteers. According the the activist’s statements, Mr. Beatty has not been properly tending to the animals that are under his care. The shelter conditions have been described as deplorable, the animals appear to be deprived of proper veterinary care, which has been said to lead to unnecessary euthanizations, and the shelter does not make much effort to get these animals adopted. It seems that a change

of leadership should be considered. The Smithtown taxpayers are providing the $100,000+/year Civil Service salary of the Director of the shelter. The residents would like to see this money be paid to a more qualified individual who will truly care about the best interest of these animals. Surely there is someone who is well qualified and eager to excel at this well paying town job! Town Supervisor Pat Vecchio stated at the last meeting that there is a lengthy process that has to be taken to have a person holding a Civil Service job removed. It will take effort on the part of the Smithtown residents who feel Mr. Beatty should be replaced to start this procedure. Take a deep breath. It calms the mind. That’s what they say anyway. Hence, my newfound appreciation for the art of yoga. It forces you to breathe, to meditate, to clear your mind of all unwanted stresses. Breathe in, breathe out. And repeat. It all started when, after 20 years of dancing, I decided that I needed something else to fill my time, to bring me back to that place where I felt like I was in shape, in control and in sync with my surroundings. After long days at work on deadline,

I settled into somewhat of a routine, using the classes to de-stress and unwind. Then came the winter, that vast, endless stretch of bitter cold, spurring the urge to hibernate until the first flowers decided to bloom. Unfortunately, stress doesn’t wait until spring, and so, come March, back to yoga I went. The first few weeks were a bit rough, what with the creaking bones and stiff muscles and, well, just a general laziness and lack of motivation. But, like magic, after getting back into a bit of a routine, there it was – that old familiar feeling of inner peace. For a few minutes anyway.

The key, I suppose, it to find a way to bottle that feeling and be able to call upon it when needed, to apply it to the world beyond my yoga mat. Perhaps that comes with practice. More practice than the once-aweek, sporadic schedule I have assembled for myself. One can only assume. One day at a time. One class at a time. One deep breath at a time. That’s all any of us can focus on in our infinite quest to find that deep, soul-searching sense of meaning to it all. No stress, no judgment, no pressure. Just you, alone with your thoughts. Breathe in, breathe out. And repeat.

History Lesson

Students in grades 3-5 at Smithtown Elementary School recently recognized the 350th year of Smithtown’s existence by welcoming Smithtown town historian Brad Harris (pictured). Students worked on comparative projects to show what life was like for a child their age 350

years ago. Special area sections integrated this theme through literature, games, art and music projects. Several local events to commemorate Smithtown’s 350 years of existence are being planned by the Smithtown Historical Society, the Town of Smithtown and other local organizations

Volunteers Honored Two Commack High School seniors who have volunteered “significant amounts of their time to serve their communities and their country” were honored with the President’s Volunteer Service Award sponsored by Prudential Financial, Inc.: Emily Avila and Alexa Tiberia. Emily devotes an extensive amount of time as a certified member of the Commack Volunteer Ambulance Corp. She has taken many classes, including radio-dispatch, and is the only current active riding/dispatcher

under the age of 17 in Commack. Emily also volunteers for other Commack organizations, including the Coalition of Caring, Cougar Athletic Camp, Relay for Life, and St. Baldrick’s. Her guidance counselor, Alyson Catinella, said, “Emily has mastered the ability to juggle harmoniously balancing her studies with philanthropy and athleticism. Merit Finalists Named Smithtown High School West seniors John Compitello and Rachel Rock, and Smithtown High School East senior Olivia Winkeler have all advanced to the finalist round in the 60th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. John, Rachel and Olivia are now in the running to be named National Merit Scholarship winners. A variety of information is available for National Merit Scholarship Corporation selectors to evaluate the finalists, including academic record, school curricula and grading system, two sets of test scores, the high school official’s written recommendation, information about the student’s activities and leadership, and the finalist’s essay. Each finalist competes for a $2,500 scholarship, as well as corporate and college-sponsored merit scholarships. Only 7,600 students in the country will be named National Merit Scholarships winners this

spring. John is currently enrolled in AP English Literature, AP Calculus BC, AP Government, AP Chemistry, AP Physics with Calculus and AP Economics. He is a member of the National Honor Society, Italian Honor Society, English Honor Society and President of the Math Honor Society and has captained the Quiz Bowl and Science Olympiad teams. 100 Days Wiser

Elementary Schools throughout the Smithtown Central School District recognized the official 100th day of school (on February 25th) by conducting numerous activities, many of a mathematical theme centering on or leading up to the number 100. Kindergarten classes at Mount Pleasant Elementary School

celebrated the 100th day by illustrating pictures of what they would look like at 100 years old. Students also stamped 100 dots to make colorful collages, created fun 100-themed hats and wrote about how they would spend $100. Dogwood Elementary School first-graders took the 100 ‘years’ theme one step further. They showed their creativity by dressing

up as if they were 100-years old, performing various math and literacy activities while sporting gray buns and beards, mustaches, glasses and wrinkles. Dating back to the first day of classes this year, students counted down to the 100th day during their morning meetings and seized the opportunity to show how much they have learned.

trips, supplies and exams, all with the goal of assisting students in attending school fully prepared to succeed,” described Weinstein. “The smiles on all of the children’s faces really helped with the night’s overall success. The Smithtown Senior Citizen Department offers a hot nutritious meal delivered to the homes of the frail elderly within the Smithtown community. The meal consists of onethird of the current daily recommended dietary allowance for individuals age 60 and older. A low sodium diet meal is typical, however, diabetic meals can be provided. The meals are prepared by Zan’s Kosher Deli & Restaurant of Lake Grove. Deliveries are made to participants in the late morning every Monday through Friday. In order to be eligible for this program, an in-home assessment is required. The Meals on

Wheels program is meant to be a temporary service and re-assessments are administered on a semi-annual basis. A voluntary contribution of $2.50 per meal is greatly appreciated. Meals are delivered by volunteer drivers from our community. These kind individuals take time out of their busy schedule to help others within our community. Delivering Meals on Wheels requires as little as two hours a week, one to four days per month. If you have the time to spare we would love to have you join our wonderful group of volunteers! In addition, for those individuals who would

enjoy a daily meal in a congregate setting, we serve Monday through Friday. A $2.25 voluntary contribution per meal is greatly appreciated. Funding for these nutrition programs are provided by the Suffolk County Office for the Aging, U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services through the New York State Office for the Aging, and the Town of Smithtown. Islanders Visit

Five members of the Islanders team visited the children in the various pediatric units of the Nassau University Medical Center. They were welcomed by Dr. Politi and hospital officials, who took them to the various floors

and introduced them to children in the emergency room, on the 18th floor and in the pediatric outpatient practices. The children, who are big fans of the Islanders, were thrilled to have the players visit them and bring some

cheer during their hospital stay. The players who signed autographs and gifted the children with T-shirts, blankets and Islanders cups were: Ryan Strome, Josh Bailey, Nick Leddy, Thomas Hickey and Brock Nelson.

Islanders Score Big

There might have been some sad faces after a loss against the New York Rangers on Tuesday night – the final faceoff at Nassau Coliseum for both New York based National Hockey League teams – but the New York Islanders scored big smiles with patients at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital on Wednesday afternoon as three players visited the hospital. Leaving their skates and sticks at the rink, forward Eric Boulton (#36), defensemen Matt Donovan (#46), and defenseman Brian Strait (#37) delivered tee-shirts, beach towels,

and hats to the patients and their families. Over 40 patients, along with family members, received visits from the players. The threesome walked through the entire in-patient pediatric unit and the out-pediatric hemotology/oncology clinic at Stony Brook University Cancer Center. They were able to spend some time with the kids, signing autographs, taking pictures and answering a ton of questions from their smallest fans. The visit was organized by the Child Life Program at Stony Brook Children’s and the New York

Islanders. Celebrating Child Life Awareness Month, the program has been sponsoring daily activities and visits which highlight what the Child Life Specialists do every day -- provide therapeutic, educational, and recreational activities to meet the unique emotional and developmental needs of hospitalized children. These activities include medical play therapy, games, arts and crafts, as well as specialized programs such as animal assisted therapy, music therapy, and birthday and holiday parties.
