undertaking has benefited the community, which is reflected in the Towns’ increased assessments, or a growing tax base. According to Moody’s credit opinion, Smithtown’s strengths include a large and growing tax base, a strong economy, solid operating results, and a low debt burden. Smithtown’s sizable ($21 Billion) tax base is anchored by the presence of Stony Brook University and the LI Innovation Park at Hauppauge. Smithtown benefits from a sizeable $21 billion 2021 tax base that is significantly above the US median and grew substantially from 2015 to 2019… Like many suburban NYC communities, Smithtown is seeing a significant uptick in housing prices and the housing market remains very strong. The town has consistently produced stable operating results reflecting close monitoring of a fairly conservatively set budget. We anticipate that the town will continue to maintain stable operating results that will generate solid reserves. Capital investments include the renovation of Smithtown’s parks system, the Lake Avenue Business District Revitalization, three offstreet parking lots in the downtown areas, Landing Golf and Country Club, Flynn Memorial Ballpark, a new entryway to the LI Innovation Park and the regional fueling facility. Additionally the Town has made substantial investments in protecting our environment and waterways, with the acquisition of land at the headwaters of the Nissequogue River, major drainage & culvert rehabilitation and clean energy initiatives. The Town of Smithtown will maintain a AAA bond rating with a stable outlook, citing a growing tax base, strong economy, solid operating results and robust fiscal position. Highlights from Moody’s credit opinion focus on the administration’s steady management, and efforts to advance the tax base which is anchored by the Long Island Innovation park and benefits from the proximity of Stony Brook University. Additionally, the AAA bond rating validates the success of major capital investments orchestrated by Smithtown’s administration, while maintaining a structurally balanced operating budget and healthy reserves. “This is a great success story about a small town pushing forward with major revitalization investments, all while enduring worldwide pandemic, epic weather events, economic fallout, and inflation. We have not only survived these unprecedented events… but we’re thriving and economically sound. Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta is participating in the 11th Annual Legislative Food Drive Challenge to collect pet food for the clients of Long Island Cares. Since 2009, Long Island Cares has provided free pet food and supplies to individuals and families in need, in an effort to enable them to keep their pets at home instead of placing them in shelters. Legislator Trotta pointed out that, according to
Long Island Cares, dog and cat food are the most requested items by their member agencies. “Pets keep many people going, giving them comfort and a reason to survive in difficult times, especially now with many people coping with the effects of COVID-19. I am asking the kind and generous residents and pet lovers in my district to help out. Last year we collected about 1,000 pounds of pet food,” said Legislator Trotta.
The pet pantry is in need of canned and dry cat/ dog food, cat/dog treats, birdseed, and food for fish, rabbits, and ferrets, as well as kitty litter and small new toys. The drive is from now until May 1. Donations may be dropped off, Monday through Friday, from 9am - 4pm, at Legislator Trotta’s office, 59 Landing Avenue, Suite 1, Smithtown. For more information, please call his office at 631- 854-3900.
The Town Of Smithtown Closes Another Successful Maple Sugaring Season all time. I am so grateful to Sheryl Brook and Jeff Gumin for continuing in the tradition of passing this demonstration down to the generations. I love their passion and genuine enthusiasm which shines through the work they do every day.” - Supervisor Edward R. Wehrheim The Hoyt Farm Nature Preserve maple sugaring program is unique in that Black Walnut trees are also tapped for sugaring, in addition to making maple syrup from Maple trees. Maple sugaring season is approximately three weeks out of the year. In order to produce the sweetest sap, weather conditions must be below freezing at night and over 40 degrees during the day. Hoyt Farm taps trees and conducts the maple sugaring program throughout February and in the beginning of March. “We love every program we offer at Hoyt… teaching young people about our history, wildlife and our caring for the natural habitat is not a job for us. It’s our calling. Sheryl Brook takes special care to put these programs and classes together so everyone leaves with a
big smile and plans to come back. She doesn’t do it for the credit, but she truly deserves all the recognition. We’re beloved by the people who visit here because of the tireless work she puts in, together with the assistance of our dedicated team. We had an incredible maple sugaring season and program this year and I can’t wait to top it next year!” - Jeff Gumin, Director, Hoyt Farm Nature Preserve The maple sugaring program began in the late 1970’s, and started with one class. It is now a full blown family-oriented interactive experience, available to the general public, (not restricted to Smithtown residents) appropriate for all age groups. School classes, girl scouts, boy scout troops, kids and adults of all ages are welcome and encouraged to take advantage of this unforgettable experience. Did You Know? Sugar in the tree sap is made in the leaves by photosynthesis, which is the same process which green plants use to convert water, sunlight, and carbon dioxide into food.

Hoyt Farm Nature Preserve hosted another successful season of maple sugaring for families, scout troops and nature enthusiasts. This unique educational program, available to the general public, teaches the ancient process of making maple syrup/sugar, which was passed down by the Native Americans to the Colonists. The maple sugaring program is a demonstration, encompassing the history of Native American early life, how maple sugaring was originally discovered, all the way up to present day, the equipment now used and how anyone can tap a tree to make maple syrup or sugar in their own backyards. An interactive portion of the program enlists the help of younger students to teach the anatomy of the tree, the importance of chlorophyll, and the role of photosynthesis in making maple syrup. “I can’t tell you how special this program is… it is one that every Long Islander should partake in at some point in life, as it is a part of our history that should be treasured for

Winners Showcase Fine Art Exhibition At Mills Pond Gallery Smithtown Township Arts Council is pleased to present Winners Showcase through March 27 at Mills Pond Gallery. Admission to the Gallery is free. The gallery is located at 660 NY-25A, St. James, NY. All parking in rear lot off Mills Pond Rd. (directly across from 199 Mills Pond Rd.) Visitors are Encouraged to Wear a Face Mask and continue social distancing to stop the spread of COVID-19. If you are unvaccinated, please wear a mask. This exhibit features Winning artists from 2021 Members Showcase (Kyle Blumenthal, Donna Corvi, , Margaret Minardi), A Sense of Place (Gia Horton) and Visualizing the Past (Lily Newland) Stony Brook artist Kyle Blumenthal’s life is steeped in art. From a very early age, she immersed herself in art books, art prints and art works. She experiences life as an artist, always looking at color, shadow and form in order to better portray them in her art. An Illustrator, a Fine Artist, a Stage Designer and Display Artist, Kyle experiments through various media and her paintings convey a message of hope and enlightenment and her subjects echo their spiritual identity through the use of forms, patterns, media, light and color. Montauk artist Donna Corvi began her career in illustration using watercolor, airbrush and colored pencil. After a commercial art career of 20 years in NYC, a change was in order. “Now, painting in both oil and acrylic, I can focus on painting what resonates with me most…trees, branches, wind and color.” The artist takes daily walks along the
water, in the woods and across fields to record her reference material for her expressionist views of tree branches, wind and the ever-changing seasons. “I love trees and I hope that I bring a new awareness about trees to people. The earth needs them–we need them to exist.” New Hyde Park artist Gia Horton is a selftaught artist. Her love for Long Island and its beauty from coast to coast is what inspires her. Her sense of composition and realistic style bring to the viewer a sense of peace and beauty in nature. Gia has worked in charcoal, colored pencil, and acrylic but her latest love is watermixable oils that lend themselves beautifully to the techniques used for her landscapes and portrait work. Gia’s art focuses on the serenity of the east end of Long Island. Northport artist Margaret Minardi will be exhibiting work from her new White on White series, which includes high realism portraits and solar plate etchings of her students and daughter… subjects that are close to her heart. “As a 30-year high school art educator, I was privileged to work with teenagers that were magical and complex. They created images that seemed impossible for ones so young. Their art glowed with strength and agonized with fragility. It is my hope that some of their beauty is captured in this series.” Wantagh artist Lily Newland received her BFA from Binghamton University in 2019 and is currently pursuing an MAT in art education at Queens College. While Lily is well versed in multiple disciplines including painting and printmaking, her passion lies with drawing. For Lily, drawing is the purest expression of the form. She enjoys the subject of the figure in its endless variations and in her desire to distill
its fleeting presence. “Drawing has remained a constant for me, when life becomes fussy and my creative enthusiasm gets a bit lost, I can usually find it again by simply returning to my sketch book.” Smithtown Township Arts Council Inc. is a recognized 501 (c) (3) notfor-profit organization, classified as a public charity under the Internal Revenue Code. Matinecock District (BSA) Hosts Winter Olympics At West Hills County Park The Matinecock District (BSA)’s Winter Olympics was held at West Hills County Park on Saturday Feb 19th, 2022. The day-long event, open to the public as well as to all in scouting, was hosted by Cub Scout Pack 66 (South Huntington) with the support from Suffolk County Council (BSA or ScoutsBSA?). It was a fun Saturday filled with tons of Olympic style games that help encourage sportsmanship, teamwork, and physical fitness. These games included Tug a War, Team Cross Country Skiing, Frozen Frisbee, Kickball, Relay Races, and an Amateur Radio station. There were over 100 people who came out to have fun from all over the Matinecock District
(the Town of Huntington and the western section of the Smithtown Township). Participants included Cub Scout Pack 5 (East Northport), Pack 471 (Elwood), Pack 5379 (Kings Park), Pack 406 (Huntington), Boy Scout Troop 125 (Commack), Troop 218 Girls (Melville), Troop 218 Boys (Melville), and Troop 34 (Huntington Station). Each of the “stations” was hosted and run by the various youths of the Boy Scout Troops and by the Cub Scout Pack volunteer leaders. The fun day was concluded by having a campfire at the Council Fire Theatre. The scouts and their family members shared fun scouting stories, sang campfire songs, drank hot chocolate, and stayed
warm by the fire. Said Taliesin Powell, District Executive, “Even being caught in a light Snow Squall was never going to squash the scout spirit and the comradery that our scouts, leaders, and parents have! It even added to the fun and memories of the event for the scouts. Scouting has never been more alive and getting kids out of the house to enjoy the great outdoors at the Matinecock District’s Winter Olympics was a great time for all who attended.” If you are interested in joining Scouts BSA (open to youths aged 6 to 17, no previous scouting experience needed), please find a local Troop or Pack near you at www. beascout.org
likely will impact how many visit this year. As St. Patrick’s Day is a religious holiday, devout Irish Catholics will treat the day as a religious celebration and may attend mass at nearby churches. Even though St. Patrick’s Day falls during the solemn season of Lent, since St. Patrick’s Day 2022 falls on a Thursday this year, one does not need to worry about any Lenten fasting restrictions. However, abstaining from meat usually is put on pause when St. Patrick’s Day falls on a Lenten Friday anyway. The biggest St. Patrick’s Day parade takes place in Dublin, and it’s full of national
pride. Additional smaller parades may be held across Ireland as well. Travelers may experience “drowning the shamrock” as they visit Irish pubs on St. Patrick’s Day. It is traditional to drop a shamrock into customers’ drinks in the pub. As such, it is surmised that having many drinks undoubtedly means more good luck for the year ahead due to all those lucky shamrocks. It’s common to come across religious rituals, pilgrimages and processions on St. Patrick’s Day, particularly to places associated with St. Patrick. Downpatrick in County Down is believed to be the final resting place of St. Patrick and many people visit the grave and cathedral there. Some also may want to visit St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin. Ireland celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in similar fashion as other countries, but the country offers unique takes on the festivities as well.
The All Kids Fair is pleased to announce that this year’s children’s expo will be taking place in person at a terrific new venue. The 11th annual All Kids Fair will be on Sunday, April 3, from 10-4:30, at Samanea New York Mall, formerly The Source Mall, at 1504 Old Country Road in Westbury. Since 2011, the All Kids Fair has been known for being a fun day for kids and their families to spend time together while also learning about opportunities for Long Island-based companies and organizations of interest to them. In 2020, this was run as a virtual event, complete with exhibitors, many interactive classes, and even a virtual petting zoo, with kids “interacting” with the animals over a Zoom-like interface. According to Barbara Kaplan, director of the expo, “every year, this fabulous children’s expo has many draws for Long Island families, and this year will be no different.” The All Kids Fair will have over 60 vendors plus many kidcentered activities, including “cornhole” (beanbag toss) and soccer. Families can interact in person with exhibitors in a huge space, with vendors set further apart and with the activity areas in designated open areas rather than in breakout rooms. Attendee Kitty Chung raved, “You organized a
wonderful event for families. We will be glad to return to have more fun!” Additional activities and attractions include three bounce houses, a petting zoo, face painters, balloon artists, a photo booth, and cotton candy, all included with admission. Jennifer Keegan of Your Local Kids Source, a multiyear sponsor and exhibitor, previously shared that she “had a great time at the All Kids Fair meeting tons of Long Island parents and enjoying all the smiling faces on all the happy kids.” This fun-filled event offers exciting educational and leisure activities to interest kids and their families each year. The Fair has choices for toddlers through high school, including kids who have special needs or are gifted. There will be information about places to play, camps, after-school activities, birthday party
providers, and college planning. A charity drive to benefit The Book Fairies, a 501c3 that provides books to those in need, will return this year. Those who donate gently used or new books or money will receive raffle tickets to win great donated prizes. Sponsors for the 2022 All Kids Fair to date are All in 1 SPOT with TheraTalk, Adam Holstein, Teach Me Wall Street, Clowns.com, Goldfish Swim School, Your Local Kids Source, Blank Slate Media, Herald Community Newspapers, and 516Ads. com/631Ads.com. Tickets purchased in advance at www.AllKidsFair. com are $5 for children ages 2 and up and adults. Tickets purchased at the door are $10 for children ages 2 and up and $5 for adults. Children under age 2 are admitted at no charge. About the All Kids Fair The All Kids Fair is an annual event organized by Specialty Connections. It showcases services such as schools, after-school activities, places for kids to play, camps, child care centers, kid-friendly products such as toys and books, and health/wellness products and services. Initially a religious holiday to commemorate the patron saint of Ireland, St. Patrick’s Day has since evolved into a global celebration of Irish culture. In fact, it has become one of the most popular days of the year to throw a party and gather with others. So how do people in Ireland — the heart of where St. Patrick’s Day originated — celebrate each March 17th? Should travelers find themselves in Ireland this time of year, here’s what to expect in terms of St. Patrick’s Day commemorations. Since St. Patrick’s Day is a national holiday, expect schools, banks and some businesses to be closed around the country and in portions of Northern Ireland. St. Patrick’s Day tourism is big business, so restaurants and pubs likely will be open and may extend their hours. According to the vacationing resource Travel Awaits, more than 100,000 travelers visit Dublin from March 14 to March 18 to partake in St. Patrick’s Day festivities. COVID-19

Dogwood Poster Contest Promotes Internet Safety
Dogwood Elementary School students shared an important safety message through their artwork. Students recently participated in an internet safety poster contest. Some of the messages the students conveyed with their artwork included: • Avoiding placing personal information
where it can be found online. • Not speaking with strangers online. • Being respectful and not a cyberbully. • Avoiding phishing and other scams, where people try to get you to click unsecure links. The poster contest was sponsored by Dogwood
librarian Ellie Eichenlaub. Winners were featured on the school’s news broadcast, and their posters were prominently displayed in the school. Suffolk County Police Department officer Tom DiLena visited Dogwood Elementary in February to similarly discuss internet safety with students.

YES Community Counseling Center (YES CCC) is a local non-profit organization with a mission to increase awareness about personal and community issues, prevent and treat substance abuse and to promote healthy families and a safe community.
YES Community Counseling Center has what they call a PACT (Partnering In Action and Change For Tomorrow) Initiative, which addresses our nation’s top substance abuse prevention priorities among persons aged 9-20 – underage drinking, marijuana, and opioid use. PACT seeks to understand patterns of youth and young adult underage drinking and substance use and implement targeted evidence based programs, policies, trainings, and education. Through community collaboration, they provide datadriven strategies and educational outreach to strengthen our communities’ prevention capacity to change the conditions by which youth and young adult substance use exists. PACT is comprised of five communities and school districts
(Farmingdale, Island Trees, Levittown, Massapequa and Plainedge) and collaborates with Farmingdale Alcohol Drug Abuse and Prevention Team (ADAPT), Levittown Community Action Coalition (LCAC), and Massapequa Takes Action Coalition (MTAC). They also partner with the Long Island Prevention Resource Center (LIPRC), Nassau County Police Department, and New York National Guard Counterdrug Task Force. Those entities work together to prevent the onset and progression of alcohol and substance use among youth and young adults aged 9-20. Prevention begins when communities’ health problems are understood within their environment; only then can YES CCC effectively plan and implement strategic action. The PACT Initiative uses the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) to identify and select comprehensive, data-driven strategies to develop community solutions. The SPF is a 5-step planning process that guides the selection, implementation and evaluation of effective, culturally appropriate and sustainable prevention activities. If you would like to learn more about the PACT Initiative, please email pact@yesccc.org, call 516-799-3203 x230 or visit www.pactyes.org. Additionally, if you would like to donate to YES CCC, please visit www.yesccc.org for more information.
If your non-profit would like to be featured in this column, please email noellestanuch@longislandmediagroup.com for consideration.

Dear Governor Hochul and Members of the New York State Senate and Assembly,
investment; it’s clear that that tactic is no longer successful, and the state needs to put its money where its mouth is.
As businesses, we were gratified when New York State passed the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA) in 2019. The CLCPA provides a road map for our state to reach a renewable energy economy, which will not only combat the devastation and unpredictability of the climate crisis but will lead to greater economic opportunity for New Yorkers as the state creates green jobs and invests in frontline communities.
Thriving communities for businesses to flourish: Thriving communities are good for business. According to the investment plan laid out by NY Renews, in addition to funding renewable energy investments, the $15 billion fund will also go towards improving public transit, public housing, and public schools, all necessary infrastructure for communities to succeed. Additional funding will go towards community-based organizations in neighborhoods most impacted by pollution and the climate crisis to fund local projects that increase our renewable energy supply, make homes and buildings more efficient, and increase resilience to climate change. A significant portion of this funding will go to low-income communities of color, which have received historically inadequate investments from the state and are most vulnerable to pollution and climate change. All of these investments will help New York communities thrive.
In recent years, however, we’ve become concerned that the CLCPA has not been funded. It’s clear that New York needs significant and consistent funding allocations to meet the goals of the CLCPA and realize the benefits of the law for New Yorkers. By allowing the law to remain an unfunded mandate, Albany will create an unstable situation for businesses and leave significant economic benefits on the table. This is why we strongly encourage you to allocate, at minimum, $15 billion in climate, jobs, and justice funding in this year’s New York State budget. These funds will benefit businesses and the communities which we serve in a multitude of ways: Creating jobs and increasing spending power: Investing $15 billion yearly in climate, jobs, and justice will create and sustain 150,000 good-paying jobs over the next decade. Creating stable jobs in renewable energy, building efficiency, public transit, and supportive industries will grow New York’s economy and increase spending power. This is good for New Yorkers, and it’s good for business. New York has the opportunity to be a business leader in renewable energy specifically, creating these jobs here in our state rather than allowing other states to overtake us in this critical and growing market. All jobs created — in renewable energy and otherwise — are good news for New York. Stable investments in building a renewable energy economy: Under the CLCPA, New York must run on 100% renewable electricity by 2040, and our entire economy must be carbon-neutral by 2050. We have made pitiful progress: just 31% of our electric generation comes from renewable sources, and since 2019, we have reduced our economy-wide emissions by only 6%. Moreover, New York currently sends over $30 billion out of state every year to purchase fossil fuels. This lack of progress is concerning for businesses: we want to be able to count on a consistent energy transition along with — or faster than — the timeline outlined in the CLCPA. We need to know that the laws of our state will be followed. New York has had three years to try to meet its own timelines without significantly increasing financial
Paid for by Seventh Generation
Putting money back into the pockets of working New Yorkers: Included in this $15 billion investment are direct grants, vouchers, and cash payments to working New Yorkers, increasing their spending power and creating breathing room for families. These funds include: grants to homeowners to make their buildings more energy-efficient (for example, through weatherization or installing heat pumps), transit vouchers for NYC residents and other residents of urban areas to encourage the use of subway and bus ridership, and LIHEAP credits to lessen the cost of heat during cold winter months. These payments will ensure working New Yorkers will have more spending power and more breathing room, which is good for business and good for our state. It’s clear that this $15 billion investment makes good business sense for New York. We strongly encourage the governor and legislature to include this funding in this year’s New York State budget.

The Spring Equinox The official beginning of spring is a highly anticipated day among people who can’t wait to put away their winter coats and soak up some warm sunlight, but the day of the spring equinox is just as worthy of celebration for its uniqueness as it is for its symbolic connection with the end of winter. According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, on the spring equinox, which is sometimes referred to as
DRIVE-THRU ONLY
the “vernal equinox” or the “March equinox,” the sun crosses the celestial equator going south to north. Equinoxes (there’s another one in September each year) are the only two times a year that the sun rises due east and sets due west for everyone on Earth. As the sun passes overhead on the equinox, the tilt of Earth is zero relative to the sun. That means that the planet’s axis
neither points toward or away from the sun. Though it’s understandable why so many people appreciate the spring equinox, which ushers in increasing sunlight hours and later sunsets, the day’s uniqueness makes it even more worthy of celebration. This year the spring equinox happens on 11:33 AM on Sunday, March 20 in the northern hemisphere.

We know families are overwhelmed trying to go through the process of moving their parents into senior living facilities, and the last thing you want to deal with or have time for is to put a house on the Real Estate Market. Cleaning out furniture, painting, open houses and paying an agent is a process that puts more stress on the family than they need. Our investors relieve them of that stress by purchasing the home exactly as is and purchasing that home privately.
