Youth Gambling Awareness Presentation

Smithtown Youth And Community Alliance, Horizons, And Youth Bureau To Hold Presentation Exploring New Trends In Gambling

The Town of Smithtown Youth and Community Alliance, Horizons Counseling and Education Center, and Smithtown Youth Bureau will be holding a presentation for adults and middle school/high school teens in the community to explore new trends in gambling. The presentation, “What are the Odds - Emerging Trends in Youth Gambling”, will be held at the Smithtown Library Meeting Room on March 20th, 2023, from 6:30PM to 7:30PM. This event will be held in recognition of Problem Gambling Month.

“There are many new trends in gambling that make it fast-paced and easily accessible. We want to bring awareness to the adults and youth in our community about the changing landscape of gambling, and to give them the tools and resources to make responsible decisions.” -

Parents will take part in a presentation that will include information on gambling vs. gaming, e-sports, social casinos, mobile sports betting and additional resources. Teens will engage with hands-on activities and will create social media posts related to underage gambling prevention. These posts will be used on Youth Bureau and Horizons social media platforms. Students will receive one hour of community service credit for participating in this event.

March is Problem Gambling Month. The goals of this national campaign are to increase public awareness of problem gambling and the availability of prevention, treatment and recovery services, and to encourage healthcare providers to screen clients for problem gambling.

Local Small Business Owner Opens A Refuge For Veterans

Scanlon’s Traveling Salon, a local small business serves vulnerable communities, such as seniors and homeless individuals across Long Island. Owner Eileen Scanlon has a heart for helping others and is actively involved in doing so. When she became aware of the fast growing rate of displaced/homeless veterans, she decided to embark on an effort to create an “intentional home share” for these individuals.

“In New York, rents and home prices are skyrocketing, which is forcing many to leave the state,” said Scanlon. “Even for those who stay here, owning a home is becoming quite unattainable. I wanted to embark on a mission that allowed me to offer a home for veterans in need, where they can live under one roof. They would share expenses and all upkeep the residence, allowing for camaraderie to blossom, but we would keep prices low.”

With a head full of dreams and a heart full of passion, Eileen purchased Ruby’s Whisper, an old 1700’s Tavern turned home in Hyde Park, NY, which she is now converting to a home share

for four to five low income veterans. The property is just a stones throw away from Marist College and the Vanderbilt/Roosevelt Estates, with public transportation nearby.

“The home will offer comfort, solace, space and a feeling of yesteryear,” said Eileen. “There are five lovely sized bedrooms, a spacious living room and cozy kitchen. The home will be furnished with the help of selfless individuals/ organizations that kindly donated items. The backyard offers veterans the ability to grow their own food and the veterans that stay with us can also utilize two large sheds for storage and there are two separate driveways in which will accommodate four vehicles. A family style home share like this for vets might mean the difference between paying rent and being able to pay their monthly food bill; a home share allows them to keep their monthly expenses much lower compared to if they were renting a place on their own.”

The home is undergoing renovations that will hopefully be finalized by the end of this summer.

“I have titled this whole project Heye’s Haven for Heroes, and I’m looking to have it fully incorporated as a 501C3 Non-Profit Organization as soon as possible. I’m so grateful to have this opportunity at this stage in my life, where I can pay forward in a way that I feel would make my father and grandfather, both veterans, rather proud.”

Neighbor Pets’ Place

Did you know this non-profit runs a Veterans Initiative™? Through this initiative they place service dogs with veterans. Canine Companions’ expertly trained service dogs can perform physical tasks to enhance independence including opening doors, picking up prosthetics and alerting a veteran with hearing loss to important sounds in their environment.

With the increase in veterans facing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), Canine Companions launched a program in 2018 to directly place service dogs with veterans with PTSD. Dogs are trained to identify each veteran’s unique stressors and perform tasks that directly disrupt escalation of symptoms, thus enhancing their quality of life. The dog supports their handler in crowded public situations by creating barriers and distance that might provoke anxiety for individuals with PTSD. Additional tasks such as nightmare interruption, turning on lights and retrieving items are taught to support veterans’ daily lives.

“When I see a veteran with a Canine Companions service dog, it still gives me goosebumps,” said Colonel E. David Woycik Jr., a highly decorated retired Army O cer and an active Canine Companions Board Member. “I see the satisfaction these veterans get...

DDI To Host Cornhole Fundraiser To Support Children And Adults With Developmental Disabilities

Smithtown, NYbased Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI), a nonprofit that provides special education and therapeutic intervention services for children and adults with autism and other developmental disabilities, will be hosting a cornhole tournament at Great South Bay Brewery, 25 Drexel Drive, Bay Shore on Saturday, March 25, 2023, from 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Proceeds will support people with autism and other developmental disabilities.

“Fundraising helps us provide the highest-level quality of supports to the children and adults we serve. Events like these are the perfect opportunity to bring people together – DDI program participants, families, staff and community – around a great cause and while having fun competing in the hugely popular game of cornhole,” said Kim Kubasek, CEO of DDI.

There is a $100 registration fee for each team of two players or a $20 spectator entry fee for those wishing to watch

the competition and help support DDI. There will be a cash prize for the first and second-place winners. The event will also have a golf simulator, light refreshments, raffles, games and more.

Corporate and family sponsorship opportunities range from $250 to $4,000.

Scout Sunday Hosted By Commack United Methodist Church

During the Scout Sunday service, it was announced by Pastor Lee and the Commack United Methodist Church that the Commack United Methodist

Church has been approved as a Certifying Organization to present the President’s Volunteer Service Award. The CUMC collectively decided to award Mr. Michael Chacon (Troop 125’s Committee Chair) with the Lifetime Service Award posthumously. The Pastor will present the Certificate for the Lifetime Achievement Award to his wife Mrs. Robyn. Chacon and Eagle Candidate son Matthew Chacon at the Troop 125 Court of Honor, on February 28th.

As the Boy Scouts of America celebrate their 113 years of serving youths, local Cub Scout Packs, Boy Scout Troops, and Explorer Crews attended and participated in the annual “A Scout is Reverent” recognitions

during the Scout Sunday Services at various local Catholic and Protestant Churches and the Jewish Scout Sabbath services at area temples and synagogues during the month of February. Troop 125 Boy Scouts (sponsored by the Suffolk Y-Jewish Community Center) were among other Boy Scout Troops and Cub Scout Packs who participated and helped to lead the services both in person and via zoom at Temple Beth Chai of Hauppauge, Dix Hills Jewish Center, and at East Northport Jewish Center where Troop 125’s Life Scout Austin Schnitzer assisted Rabbi Ian Silverman in leading the Friday evening 2023 Scout Sabbath services.
