At Home Covid Test Distribution The Town of Smithtown successfully distributed over two thousand athome Covid test kits to the most vulnerable population within the township. On Wednesday, February 9th, Town staff picked up 2,552 test kits from Suffolk County at the Department of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services. On Thursday, February 10th, Smithtown Officials delivered approximately 2000 tests to seniors and at-risk individuals within the community, and at the Senior Center. On Monday morning, February 14th, the Department of Public Safety orchestrated a distribution event, where residents could collect their at-home tests outside of the Maple Avenue building. “I’m extremely grateful to our partners in government at Suffolk County for arranging the much needed supply to be distributed to our residents, especially those who need it most. Our community members who are retired or living on a fixed income have certainly felt the cost of inflation, and this pandemic, in ways that have severely reduced quality of life. No one should have to sacrifice nutrition or grocery budgets to purchase PPE like face masks and Covid-19 tests. We owe it to our most vulnerable to provide the resources necessary to keep everyone healthy. While I hope the

latest wave of the omicron variant was the last peak of Covid-19; these test kits will go a long way towards keeping people safe while cases are on the decline.” - Supervisor Ed Wehrheim The At-Home Covid-19 Antigen test kit (made in the USA) which includes two tests per box, were delivered to senior living communities throughout the township, at the Senior Center and at Public Safety. Supervisor Wehrheim’s office worked alongside Legislators Kennedy and Trotta to ensure locations were not replicated with the Legislators drop off locations and distribution events, to maximize the reach. When supplies ran out late on Monday morning at Public Safety, Legislator Robert Trotta generously allotted additional kits for the remaining residents. Suffolk County will continue to work with the Town of Smithtown to provide additional Covid-19 related resources & PPE supplies for anyone in need. Residents who may be homebound, or are unable to obtain athome test kits may email the Supervisors office at S P I O @ S m i t h t o w n N Y. gov with requests. For additional information on future at-home test kit distribution events within the township, residents can download the Town of Smithtown Mobile App, available for free on Google Play and the App Store.

Paws Of War Provides The Reboli Center Presents Long Island Veterans With Free Wellness Through The Lens, Showcasing The Care Checkups For Their Service Animals Photography Of Joseph Reboli And Many In support of their mission Prominent Photographers of giving back to veterans and first responders, nonprofit Paws of War recently hosted their “Hearts and Heroes” event at their headquarters in Nesconset, where they provided 27 service animals with free veterinary care, which included wellness checks, flea and tick medications, vaccinations, bags of dog food and microchipping service. The pandemic has brought financial challenges to veterans and first responders Many disabled veterans live on low or fixed incomes and their service animal’s medical care is essential so they can provide the level of support and comfort upon which the veterans depend. “As a former veteran, I know how critical and expensive it is to take care of these service animals. They are more than just pets; these animals provide emotional support and tasks for these heroes when it is needed most,” said Kelli Porti, Veteran & Community Outreach Liaison for Paws of War. Dr. Marissa Altieri, DVM, volunteered her expert veterinary care to the pop-up clinic and its patients, donating her time to assist Paws of War as a way to give back to the community and support the non-profit’s mission.

Photo couresy of Anthony Lambroia “Veterinarians enable animals of all kinds to live their best life and to be as happy and healthy as possible. Service animals are responsible for their health and well-being and in many cases the lives of their owners. Volunteering my time and medical knowledge for Paws of War and their mobile clinic is my way to honor these veterans for all they have done for our country,” said Dr. Altieri. Hearts and Heroes is part of a continual program, Vets for Vets, hosted by Paws of War that gives back to service men and women by providing free veterinary care for their service animals; their wellness is

essential in providing their exceptional service to their owners who are U.S. military veterans suffering from the emotional effects of war. SCPD Officer Talks Internet Safety

SCOUT SUNDAY HOSTED BY COMMACK UNITED METHODIST CHURCH - Boy Scout Troop 125 Boy Scouts and adult scouting volunteer leaders pose for a photo with Pastor Roslyn Lee and members of the church community following the Scout Sunday service at Commack United Methodist Church (Commack) on February 13th. Commack United Methodist Church, which sponsors Boy Scout Troop 125, was one of several Matinecock District (BSA)’s Host Churches for the Protestant Faith during the start of National Boy Scout Week. As the Boy Scouts of America celebrate their 112 years of serving youths, local Cub Scout Packs, Boy Scout Troops, and Explorers attended and participated in the annual “A Scout is Reverent” recognitions during the Scout Sunday Services at various local Catholic and Protestant Churches and the Jewish Scout Sabbath services at area temples and synagogues during the month of February. Troop 125 Scouts were among other Boy Scout Troops and Cub Scout Packs who participated and helped to lead the services both in person and via zoom at Dix Hills Jewish Center, where Troop 125’s Life Scout Ian Schnitzer assisted Rabbi Ian Silverman in leading the Friday evening 2022 Scout Sabbath services.

Suffolk County Police Department officer Tom DiLena shared important safety messages with Dogwood Elementary School students. As part of an ongoing partnership with the Smithtown Central School District, DiLena spoke with third graders about bullying prevention, fourth graders about internet safety and cyberbullying, and fifth graders about vaping and e-cigarettes. Similar visits are scheduled at the six other elementary schools in the district, including Smithtown Elementary School and Tackan Elementary School the following week. DiLena told Dogwood students that the internet safety presentation is the SCPD’s most requested. The officer began by asking how many of the fourth graders had cell phones, and an overwhelming number raised their hands. He then asked what social media apps the students use. And while Facebook use was nearly nonexistent and Twitter use was exceedingly limited, an overwhelming number of students acknowledged being active on Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat.

DiLena had several important safety tips for the students: • Never accept a friend request or otherwise communicate online with someone you don’t already know. The person may be a “creepy cyber predator,” who may even be pretending to be someone young by using a fake profile. It is better to have a small group of followers, friends or connections you know than a large group with unfamiliar people. The more followers/ connections you have, the more chance of being cyberbullied or otherwise harmed. • Never use your real first and last name or photo in your profile. That information, and pictures that show what school you attend, where you go to the movie theater, or similar info, could help someone with bad intent find you. • Be sure to use privacy settings. For instance, on Snapchat, the default setting is for Snap Map to be active. And that would anyone with whom you’re a friend to know your exact location. Turn that setting off. Or limit it so that only your parents can know where you are. Also, set your profile to private so that people you don’t know

cannot see your content. “I make sure only my friends can see me,” DiLena said. • Think before you post something online. Once you hit send, you can never truly take it back. Even messages that supposedly disappear are stored by the app. Or someone you think is a friend can do a screen capture and show it to other people. Even if it seems far off, what you post on social media can have an impact on college admission, a scholarship, or the ability to get hired for a job someday. DiLeo noted that one high school student elsewhere on Long Island was fired by McDonald’s for complaining on social media about her job. • Games also have cyber predators — not just social media apps. Don’t game with people you don’t know. DiLeo noted that “Call of Duty” voice chats “get out of control.” And games like Road Blocks allow people to message you who you don’t know. • Your parents are right to have your password and limit your nighttime use of your mobile device. They are doing it to protect you, not spy on you. Apps can be addictive, too. Know when to turn them off.

SUFFOLK COUNTY LEGISLATOR TROTTA MEETS WITH BOY SCOUT TROOP 565 - Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta recently met with members of Smithtown Boy Scout Troop 565 where he talked about his job as a Suffolk County Legislator and county government. Afterwards, he answered questions from the scouts and their parents. “I think the troop leaders are doing a great job to ensure that the boys learn about local government and its role in the community. Hopefully, there are some future leaders in Troop 565,” said Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta. of photography of their assisted living residents and their advice for the next generation,” said Ancipink. “Their words inspired us.” Ancipink says her troop of scouts was excited to participate, but when they found out Gurwin would need more than 300 cards to share with the residents, she worried they wouldn’t be able to do it. Then inspiration struck: they reached out to Melissa Trocchio-Cohen, art instructor at Maud S. Sherwood Elementary in Islip, where some of the scouts are students, who graciously offered to help. From the combined effort, more than 330 cards were delivered to Gurwin for Valentine’s Day, just in time to bring a smile to the residents of the two Gurwin communities. “It was good to know we would be making people happy,” said Ancipink’s daughter, Tillie, a 5th grader at Sherwood. “We all worked hard because we knew we could make a difference in someone’s day.” “We are so grateful to these young ladies and their troop leaders for selflessly thinking of our residents on a day that can be as sad and isolating and

Five Smithtown Central School District educators are among 230 statewide who have been recognized as Master Teachers by Governor Kathy Hochul. Accompsett Middle School’s Allison Fitzpatrick and Melissa May, as well as St. James Elementary’s Brian Cusati have been newly selected to join AMS’s Amy Olander and Smithtown High School West’s Kimberly Williams, who continue to be part of the cohort. The Master Teachers are dedicated professionals who teach science, technology, computer science, robotics, coding, engineering, math and integrated STEM courses across grades K-12. The selected Master Teachers have taught an average of 15 years. More than 81% have been in the

classroom for more than a decade, and 26% have been teaching for more than 20 years. All Master Teachers are active beyond their classrooms, serving as curriculum and department leaders or members of district- and state-level committees, as well as mentor teachers for student and early career teachers. Many new members have been awarded grants for school STEM resources. They are sponsors of Science Olympiad competitions, summer STEM camps, school gardens, robotics teams, coding clubs, community service organizations and PTO members or officers. The Master Teachers hold leadership roles in New York State STEM professional associations

and lead professional development workshops for regional and statewide educator conferences. Many of the 230 Master Teachers have been recognized for outstanding service by their peers, local communities or professional associations. “New York’s Master Teacher program has long celebrated the immense talent across our state, recognizing the leaders in STEM education who inspire students and their peers alike,” SUNY interim Chancellor Deborah F. Stanley said. “During this particularly challenging time in our history, we appreciate our teachers even more for keeping their students engaged and succeeding in their classwork.

The Commack School District is pleased to announce that the National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) has recognized Commack High School senior Lakxshanna (Lexie) Raveendran with an honorable mention in the 2022 Awards for Aspirations in Computing (AiC). Lexie

is one of 400 recipients from over 3,500 applicants nationwide, putting her in the top 11 percent of applicants. Each year, NCWIT recognizes students in grades 9 to 12 who identify as women, genderqueer, or non-binary for their “aptitude and aspirations in technology and computing,

as demonstrated by their computing experience, computing-related activities, leadership experience, tenacity in the face of barriers to access, and plans for post-secondary education.” National winners are recognized and celebrated at the National Award Ceremony hosted by Bank of America.

Smithtown HS East FCCLA Donates Essential Items To Local Senior Center

The Smithtown High School East FCCLA stepped up a year ago, purchasing toiletries and other essential items for residents of Sunrise Senior Living in Village of the Branch, when the seniors were unable to venture to stores during the height of the pandemic. The generosity was so wellreceived, the FCCLA chapter has now made it an annual tradition. After raising $500 from the sale of potholder gift

sets during the holidays, the FCCLA used the proceeds to again purchase shampoos, conditioners, lotions, nail polish and lipstick for the senior center’s residents. FCCLA Co-Presidents Alexandra Shepherd and Trisha Kanhai, along with adviser Connie Smith, dropped off the car-load of items to the senior center’s appreciative staff. “This year they also asked for puzzles and board games,” said Smith, who

advises the club with Jaclyn Grebosz. The FCCLA was more than happy to accommodate that request during a shopping trip at a nearby Dollar Store earlier in the afternoon. The High School East FCCLA also had made fidget blankets for Alzheimer’s patients at the senior center. Those, too, were dropped off on Feb. 8, with a pledge from Smith of more to come if they prove to be popular.

COMMACK HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT RECOGNIZED - Commack High School senior Lakxshanna (Lexie) Raveendram (second from the left) has received an honorable mention from the National Center for Women & Information Technology for Aspirations in Computing. Standing with her are Principal Carrie Lipenholtz (left), Curriculum Associate Amy Nicole Martin (third), and Math and Computer Teacher Kristen Holmes (right).

As a young reporter, Geraldo Rivera exposed the deplorable conditions that existed within the then largest institution in the nation serving children with developmental disabilities. Rivera first learned about these conditions from Life’s WORC founder Victoria Schneps Yunis. Her daughter, Lara, diagnosed at an early age with severe brain damage, was a resident at Willowbrook. When cuts in state funding caused the institution to fall into extensive disrepair, Schneps, along with other concerned individuals, picketed to fight for the rights of Willowbrook’s more than

Help Needed - @ New York Blood Center has issued a blood emergency. Free Transportation Through ‘Ride United’ To And From Covid-19 Vaccine Appointments United Way of Long Island recently launched ‘Ride United’ to help local residents access transportation to receive the COVID-19 vaccine through the rideshare service Lyft. The program is part of United Way Worldwide’s Ride United Vaccine Access Campaign, which addresses unmet transportation needs for individuals and families. Long Island residents participating in ‘Ride United’ receive 2 free Lyft rides (up to $25 each way) to and from vaccination appointments located in Nassau or Suffolk Counties. Riders must download the Lyft app on a supported device and have an active Lyft account. “United Way of Long Island is committed to keeping our communities safe and healthy. Ride United removes barriers of transportation inequity, ensuring that any Long Islander seeking to get vaccinated can get to and from their appointment without cost,” said Theresa A. Regnante, President and CEO of United Way of Long Island. Ride United expands upon the organization’s COVID-19 response efforts. United Way of Long Island has helped seniors, veterans and families receive emergency financial assistance, fresh groceries, PPE items and HEPA air purifiers to improve their health, wellbeing and financial security during the

pandemic. Expanding access to vaccination appointments provides a critical resource for neighbors who would otherwise be unable to get to their appointment due to financial, transport or other reasons. If you or someone you know needs transportation to and from your COVID-19 vaccination appointment, visit www. unitedwayli.org/rideunited, or contact 211 Long Island by dialing 2-1-1, or outside of Nassau and Suffolk Counties dial 1-888-774-7633, 7 days a week, or visit 211longisland.org. About United Way of Long Island     United Way of Long Island advances the common good, creating opportunities for a better life for all by focusing on the three key building blocks of education, financial stability and health. We recruit people and organizations that bring the passion, expertise and resources needed to get things done. LIVE UNITED® is a call to action for everyone to become part of the change.
