LAINA FRIEDMANN MAKES HISTORY - Smithtown High School West track star Laina Friedmann made history Feb.13 at the Section XI Individual Winter Championships. Laina broke both her school records in the 1000m run and the 600m run, qualifying for the State Meet in both. She ran a 2.55.05 for the 1000m and a 1:35:20 for the 600m. Laina also set a Meet and Facility record and her coach, David Stein, said her runs were the best ever by a female in the two events in Suffolk County Winter Track and Field history. SOUPER BOWL SUCCESS! - Students at Tackan Elementary School in Smithtown donated more than 1,400 canned goods to help Long Island Harvest. The fourth grade Cares Club recently sponsored Souper Bowl and the entire school got involved. The students collected 1,453 cans as a school. A Scout is Reverent... Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Brownies, and Girl Scouts and their adult scouting volunteer leaders participated in the celebration of the Scout Sunday Mass held at St. Thomas More R.C. Church in Hauppauge on February 12,2023 at  St. Thomas More R.C. Church Hauppauge and in the Scout Sabbath via zoom on February 3, 2023 at Temple Beth Chai of Hauppauge.

St. Thomas More R.C. Church (which sponsors Boy Scout Troop 343) was one of the Matinecock District (Scouts BSA)’s Host Churches for the

Catholic Faith during the start of National Boy Scout Week and Temple Beth Chai of Hauppauge was one of the four area temples to host (either via zoom or hybrid with “in person” services). In addition to the volunteer uniformed Scouting Leaders, the members of the local Boy Scout Troops, Cub Scout Packs, and Brownie and Girl Scouts participated in and attended the Mass. Father Antony Asir, who was the Celebrant for the Mass, blessed the Scouts and their leaders during the service. There were scouts from across the nation that participated

via zoom connections at Temple Beth Chai as Rabbi Alan Stein led the Jewish Sabbath services.

As the Boy Scouts of America celebrate their 113th year of serving youths, local Cub Scout Packs, Boy Scout Troops, and Explorers attended and participated in the annual “A Scout is Reverent” recognitions during the Scout Sunday Services at various local Catholic and Protestant Churches and at the Jewish Scout Sabbath services held locally at area temples and synagogues during the month of February.

ART IN THE PARK FINE ART & CRAFT FAIR - After a long hiatus due to the pandemic, the Art League of Long Island is proud to bring back the Art in the Park Fine Art & Craft Fair to the scenic Heckscher Park in Huntington on Saturday, June 3 and Sunday, June 4.

After a long hiatus due to the pandemic, the Art League of Long Island is proud to bring back the Art in the Park Fine Art & Craft Fair to the scenic Heckscher Park in Huntington on Saturday, June 3 and Sunday, June 4. Now in its 53rd year, this juried fair attracts thousands of discerning art lovers looking to purchase unique, one-of-a-kind art and craft to display in their homes or to wear as fashion statements.

More than 80 artists and craftspeople will show

and sell original works of art and handmade crafts such as paintings, ceramics, jewelry, sculpture, woodwork, glasswork, photography, fiber art, wearable art and more. Prizes will be awarded to exhibitors who demonstrate superior artistry and craftsmanship. The event will also feature live art demonstrations by Art League instructors, family-friendly hands-on activities, and live music. A raffle will run throughout the weekend, the winner to be announced the

following week. Proceeds will benefit the Art League of Long Island, a not-for-profit visual arts organization serving the community since 1955.

STUDENT HELPS EARTHQUAKE VICTIMS - Ilayda Guven, a member of the Smithtown East Chapter 4958 Tri M Music Honor Society, recently organized an assistance drive to help aide the people of Turkey and Syria from the recent earthquake. Friends Of America’s Vet Dogs Chinese Auction Fundraiser April 15

A local volunteer community service group, whose mission is to provide service dogs to assist veterans-in-need, last week donated $12,700 to America’s Vet Dogs – sponsoring two more service dogs.

“Friends of America’s Vet Dogs” started in 2015 and has successfully sponsored 31 highly trained service dogs for veterans since. The group carefully names each dog to honor an unsung hero of our military, to honor someone who brought

great credit to our military or to recognize someone who significantly helped veterans-in-need.

Their most recent donation enabled the sponsoring of Service Dogs ‘Tammy’ and ‘Kyle’. In 2016 the group sponsored and named Service Dog ‘Sully’, who went on to serve President George W. Bush. ‘Sully’ now continues to serve wounded veterans at Walter Reed Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.

“Friends of America’s Vet Dogs” will hold their

Canine Companions is a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people with disabilities by providing highly trained service dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships. Independence shouldn’t be limited to those who look or live a certain way, so they are proud to provide their dogs and support services free of charge to recipients.

Clients come to Canine Companions because of their reputation, the quality of their dogs, the experience of their training sta and the desire to lead a life with greater independence. The organization is proud to have various chapters and training centers across our nation that operate o of these six core values:

Teamwork: They believe in the joyful and transforming power of the partnership between an individual and their dog.

Compassionate Service: They treat everyone they serve with respect and empathy.

the puppies are old enough to enter their professional training program, they head to one of their six regional training centers, located in Northern California, Southern California, Texas, Ohio, New York and Florida.

The organization typically places between 325 and 375 service dogs per year. Once a dog has completed professional training, it is ready to be matched with a person with disabilities. The match is made at one of their regional training centers during Team Training, a two-week group class.

South Shore Audubon Offers Scholarships

The South Shore Audubon Society has begun accepting applications for two $1000 Environmental Scholarships. The scholarships will be awarded to college juniors, seniors, or graduate students earning a degree in areas of biological or environmental science, or sustainable and renewable energy .

For the Evelyn and Jerry Bishop Environmental Scholarship, applicants must be residents of one

of the areas listed at www. ssaudubon.org/areas-weserve.asp and/or attend a college in Nassau or Suffolk County.

For the Jay Koolpix, Environmental Scholarship, applicants must be residents of Nassau County and/or attend a college in Nassau or Suffolk County.

May 31,2023 is the deadline for submission of applications. Completed applications include a brief explanation of the

reason for applying for the scholarship and the plan to use the money, a copy of the most recent transcript of grades, and at least one letter of recommendation. Applicants may apply for both scholarships but cannot be awarded more than one.

Canine Companions uses Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers and crosses of these two breeds. Most of their dogs come from their selective breeding program, but occasionally donated puppies are accepted if they meet the strict qualification requirements. Their puppies are raised by volunteers who selflessly take them to classes that teach them basic obedience and house manners. When

During Team Training, students learn to manage the service dog’s behavior, to direct the dog to respond to commands it has learned and to assume responsibility for maintaining the health and well-being of the dog. Each dog can really make all the di erence in the life of its new partner. A Canine Companions service dog can not only open doors, pick up dropped items, turn on the lights and alert its partner of important sounds, but they can also increase confidence and independence.

Senator Mattera Welcomes Smithtown Session Volunteer

Senator Mario R. Mattera (2nd Senate District) recently welcomed Anthony Tarquinio to his Albany office as a session volunteer. A 2020 graduate of Smithtown High School East, Anthony is currently in his senior year of study at the University of Albany where he is majoring in Homeland Security and Cyber Security.

During his tenure with Senator Mattera, Anthony will assist staff with legislative matters and constituent assistance to enhance the lives of the residents of the 2nd Senate District. A member of the University of Albany’s ice hockey team, Anthony is on course to graduate this coming spring.

Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, Inc., a private, not for profit organization providing a comprehensive therapeutic equine program using horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for children and adults with disabilities, has kicked off its virtual fundraising hay drive. The three-month campaign is intended to help Pal-OMine raise funds to pay for the hay needed to feed its herd and help offset the rising costs of hay.

To grow hay, hundred of acres of land is required in addition to extensive physical labor and expensive equipment to deliver hay from the farmer to Pal-O-Mine’s herd. Here are some details associated

with the cost factors:

-One bale of hay weighs 50-70 lbs.

-One bale of excellent quality hay costs approximately $14; an increase of 40% from last year.

-Pal-O-Mines herd eats 18 bales (1,000 lbs.) of hay daily

-Pal-O-Mine receives a delivery of 810 bales of hay every six weeks at a cost of $6,600 at a cost of approximately $57,200 annually.

Through the virtual fundraising hay drive, PalO-Mine’s goal is to raise $12,000.

The Second-place winner will receive an Atelier hat and apron. The Third-place winner may choose either an Atelier hat or an Atelier apron.

This exhibition encourages the work of Middle and High School student artists and is being held in The Atelier’s 2,000 square foot gallery, which functions both as a professional studio space and exhibition area.

The Atelier at Flowerfield seeks to encourage our future artists by offering classes and workshops with exceptional, professional instructors and exhibitions by students and instructors as well as local and visiting artists in Atelier Hall.

Our educational offerings include free lectures, an extensive fine art library, and Scholarship and Fellowship programs for aspiring professional artists, and worthy students.

Creating Healing Mandalas In The Circle Of Life

Mandala is a Sanskrit word that means “Circle.”

Mandala-making is a common Art Therapy method often used for insight, healing and selfexpression. It is another way to practice mindfulness.

Circles often symbolize the connectedness we have with all people,

including our lost loved ones. Licensed Art Psychotherapist, Deborah Adler, will lead you into creating your very own mandala allowing you to explore your feelings whether they reflect grief, sadness, inspiration or hope. No artistic skill or experience is required.

Get creative, allow your mind to wander and enjoy the process while you design your art piece with colors, images and symbols that inspire you to reflect on your loved one. There will be dedicated time following the art experience to share mandalas and process any

feelings and emotions that came up for you.
