Tackan Students Paint ‘Trooper’ For Paws Of War Marine Corps veteran Ryan Canedo received a service dog from Paws of War in a ceremony at MetLife Stadium this past December. On Jan. 25, Canedo, who served the nation in Iraq, was present with his son and daughter, who both attend Tackan Elementary School, to return the gratitude. Canedo’s children, along with all of the

other students at Tackan Elementary, recently painted in camouflage a nearly seven-foot long Great Dane statue that will be displayed outside the Paws of War organization’s headquarters in Nesconset. Paws of War picked up the statue, which the students named “Trooper,” as students watched the handoff. The organization trains

and places shelter dogs, who go on to serve and provide independence to U.S. military veterans who suffer from the emotional effects of war. Tackan art teacher Claudia Chandler spearheaded the painting of the statue in camouflage. “It was a total school effort,” she said.

The Long Island Pet Expo returns for the first time since the outbreak of COVID on March 5-6, 2022, with fur flying entertainment, dog sporting competitions and educational programs designed for the whole family. The event returns to the Suffolk Federal Credit Union Arena and features many special attractions, pet adoptions and outstanding shopping for pet lovers and their pets. “The Long Island area is passionate about animals and pets of all kinds,” said show co-producer Karen Garetano of Family Pet Shows, which runs seven similar events in the northeast. “We are excited to be back in the area after a long, unplanned break. The number of pet licenses

in the region has almost doubled since the start of COVID, and the interest in the event seems to have doubled too based on our phones and social media activity.” The 80+ special exhibits always feature some of the hottest new products coming out often before they hit the retail shelves. On Monday, February 7, 2022, Suffolk County Legislator Trish Bergin of the 10th LD, distributed 700 Covid-19 at home test kits and N-95 masks to eight local religious organizations within her district. “The outreach programs run by these organizations provide vital services. I am proud to be able to provide these Championship Cat Shows and more. “We always have fun at these events, but we also are strong supporters of responsible pet ownership and humane values when it comes to all issues involving animals and pets,” said Garetano. “We partner with several community organizations, shelters, veterinarians and other animal lovers educate and inform when it comes to best practices for training, feeding and all aspects of pet care.” Community and rescue organizations participating in the show include Tylers Rescue, Chippy’s Angels to the Rescue, Haven Animal Foundation, Last Chance Animal Rescue, Pet Partners, LI Golden Retriever Rescue, and more The event is expected to draw over 10,000 attendees over the weekend. Admission is Adults $15, Kids 3-11 are $6, and those under three years old are always free. Saturday March 5th the hours are 10 am to 7 pm, and on Sunday, March 6th, from 10 am to 5pm. Principal Mary Grace Lynch Nostalgic As Retirement Nears

Mary Grace Lynch has served as the principal at St. James Elementary School for the past 20 years. At the end of the academic year in June, however, she will be celebrating her retirement. The board of education formally approved the upcoming retirements of Lynch and district Athletic Director Pat Smith at its meeting on Jan. 25. “The most special thing has been the people — absolutely the people,” said Lynch, who plans to remain in the area after

retiring. “The students, the staff, the families, the community as a whole — it’s all just exceptional.” Lynch expects the next several months to be emotional and nostalgic. She will be joined in retirement by her secretary at St. James Elementary, Jane Groneman. “The building itself is a historical building that I’ll miss,” Lynch said. “Teaching and learning are my passions. I started in education 39 years ago. It’s going to be a different

life. But I have two grandchildren and I have a lot of hobbies that I’ve put on the side, and many, many books to read. I’m looking forward to it.” Before joining St. James Elementary, Lynch taught for a combined 15 years at the elementary level in New York City and Brentwood. She also served as an assistant principal and principal in the Connetquot Central School District before joining St. James Elementary.

Accompsett Elementary fourth graders received a thrill courtesy of the Suffolk County Police K-9 unit. Five officers and their dogs visited the students to share how they train the dogs to search for explosives and other evidence. Sgt. Kevin Krause and his explosive search dog Wolf provided a handson lesson. The scent of an explosive powder was hidden in a desk in the cafeteria, and Wolf was told to search. Wolf

sprinted around the room, including through the fourth graders, before locating the scent and receiving a reward from Sgt. Krause. Students learned that the dogs are typically born in Europe. They then join the police department at about 18 months old. The officers typically give their commands to the dogs in German, and by hand signals. Students were particularly thrilled when three young dogs who only joined the police

department in recent weeks appeared. The officers and their assigned dogs will train five days a week for six months. The dogs live with the officers to create an inseparable bond. “They just started training,” Krause told the students about the year-and-a-half old dogs. “They’re just like babies.” Wolf, for the record, loves steak as a reward. “He’s not a vegetarian,” Krause said.
