CLASS PENS VALENTINE’S FOR A SPECIAL VET - Fourth graders at Accompsett Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District are sharing their love this Valentine’s Day. Mrs. Hennessy and Mr. Pelosi’s class heard about a 104-year-old veteran living in California who was asking for Valentine’s cards. The class learned about Major Bill White, and how he fought in Iwo Jima during World War II. The Charity of The Month for February is: Girls on the Run of Long Island www.gotrlongisland.org Girls on the Run is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. They run a physical activity-based positive youth development program that is designed to enhance girls’ social, psychological and physical skills and behaviors to help them successfully navigate life experiences.

They serve girls in grades 3-5 and inspire them to be joyful, healthy and confident by using a fun, interactive curriculum, which creatively integrates running! Meeting twice a week in small teams for a 10-week season, a volunteer coach will teach girls life skills through engaging lessons and fun movement activities. At each season’s conclusion, all girls from teams across Long Island will meet up for a celebratory 5K running event. This year’s 5K event is scheduled for Saturday, June 6 at Hofstra University, where over 1000 individuals will run, volunteer or spectate to celebrate! Their upcoming spring season will begin the week of March 16th and is shaping up to be their largest season yet!

New Special Rescue Operations Vehicle Added To Smithtown FD Fleet On February 1, 2020 the Smithtown FD put into service the newest addition into their fleet. Designated unit number 4-2-19, this Ford F550 chassis with Maintainer Custom Bodies box will be used for Special Rescue Operations, primarily Water & Ice Rescues, and act as a supplement to Rescue Co. 9’s frontline Heavy Rescue apparatus. The vehicle contains a 13.5-foot Avon Web Inflatable Boat which small packaged style allows it to be carried to difficult to reach areas and then inflated and deployed within 60 seconds. The boat pairs with a Honda 15Hp 4 Stroke Motor, stored on this new vehicle, which has a unique lift system to ensure safe storage and rapid deployment for alarms. At least once a month, employees provide meals, food, clothing and toiletries to the INN’s guests, and help out with whatever else is needed at the soup kitchen. Responsibilities include preparing and serving hot, nutritious meals to guests in the

soup kitchen, and stacking non-perishable food items in the INN’s Choice Pantry, where guests receive free food items to provide their families with weekend meals.
