Options for Community Living, Inc. Holiday Assistance Program

Grows to Serve More Than 100 Long Island Families

Expressions of gratitude sometimes accompanied by tears greeted case managers from Options for Community Living, Inc. (Options) as they made holiday gift deliveries to their clients.

“I am very grateful for these gifts for my kids” expressed one parent. “It has been a very tough year for us. I wasn’t sure how I would give my children the Christmas they deserved. We appreciate the community for all they do.”

Each year, Options for Community Living, Inc. (Options) organizes a holiday assistance program for Long Island families in need. Case managers identify families in Options programs and help them create wish lists. Wish lists are then matched with community volunteers and local businesses interested in providing a magical holiday season for the families. Gifts

are purchased, wrapped, and returned to Options for distribution.

“Long Islanders are incredibly generous,” said Jessica Klein, Options Marketing and Development Specialist. “We started talking to our past supporters in September and by early November all of our families were adopted!”

Thanks to a generous community, 109 families in Options’ programs received assistance.

Among the organizations supporting this effort were Teachers Federal Credit Union, Kedrion Biopharma, Forchelli Deegan Terrana, several teams from Stony Brook University, and Bethpage Federal Credit Union.

“We are so happy to support and participate in this wonderful program,” said Katie Bielawski, Senior Manager of Charitable Giving and Events at

Bethpage Federal Credit Union. “We are looking forward to another great partnership year in 2023!”

“The success of this program is truly a community effort,” said Jessica Klein. “It would not be possible without the help of local businesses, individual volunteers, and our employees who make it happen.” If you are interested in volunteering as a family sponsor for the 2023 program, please call 631-361-9020 and speak to a member of Options Development Department. Helping You Help Others

The Charity of the Month for February is The Corporate Source

www.thecorporatesource.org

The Corporate Source (TCS) is a non-profit organization that started in 1996. They strive to change the perceptions of individuals with disabilities in the workforce by having them work in integrated settings where their value, productivity, commitment and dedication can be experienced by all. To accomplish this mission, TCS addresses the factors a ecting employment inequity and overcomes barriers to employment that keep this staggering number of people with disabilities excluded from the workforce. TCS is extremely proud of their work and today the operate in over 100 locations , many here on Long Island, NY.

Despite an increased knowledge base and laws, such as the Americans With Disabilities Act, the overwhelming number of people with disabilities are either unemployed or underemployed. In America alone, roughly 61 million adults live with a disability. Today, about 1 in 6 American children are diagnosed with a developmental disability and they then age out of most public programming when they become 21. With less to do each day and having fewer prospects for employment, these young adults often become socially isolated and depressed.

Sometimes, employers may have misconceptions which make them reluctant to hire a person with disabilities. TCS works to change perceptions to show employers the benefits of an inclusive workforce. Given the opportunity to demonstrate their skills and capabilities, these employees show dependability, honesty, tenacity and dedication to doing the best job possible. Several TCS workers have received awards and recognition for their achievements and outstanding performance on the job.

TCS employs nearly 400 people with disabilities in the greater New York tristate region, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, providing outsourcing services to several federal, state and

private sector organizations. A small sample of their longterm client collaborations include Janitorial and Disinfecting Services for the US Merchant Marine Academy, Mail-room Operations at Long Island and NYC Internal Revenue Service locations, Call Center Support at the Manhattan VA Medical Center and Kennel Care for the Department of Homeland Security at JFK Airport.

Most recently, they have partnered with the Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) to develop a program for professionally educating and training people with disabilities for entry level positions in the growing IT field. Corporations like Microsoft, Ernst & Young and more have had very positive experiences where people with disabilities are e ective for these positions from a number of perspectives.

This non-profit works year-round through special events, networking opportunities, social media outreach and other e orts to raise awareness and funds to support disability employment initiatives. There are many ways that you can support the mission of TCS.

For more information, visit www. thecorporatesource.org or contact Ruth-Ann Gater at ruth-ann.gater@ thecorporatesource.org and stay tuned for next week’s article.

Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta Thanks The Public For Supporting His Annual Coat Drive

Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta thanks the public for their generous donations of numerous coats and accessories for his annual

coat drive to benefit organizations that assist people in need. One local resident knitted 50 hats for the program.

“The positive response

and the tremendous support from everyone is greatly appreciated,” said Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta.

“All of you have a choice in life. To be either average, good or great. I hope from here on out you’ll be great.” Those are the words of Long Islander Rohan Murphy who addressed students at Nesaquake Middle School on Jan. 18.

Rohan is an American Paralympian, wrestler and motivational speaker. Despite losing his legs at

birth, Rohan is one of the most decorated wrestlers in East Islip history, finishing his career as a three-time All-League and two-time All-County wrestler.

Murphy also earned three varsity letters while wrestling at Penn State.

“Growing up, doctors told me everything I can’t accomplish. So I did it anyway just to prove them

wrong and that I could be a successful,” Murphy told Nesaquake students.

In 2006, Murphy won a Bronze medal in the 56 kg Junior Division of the 2006 IPC World Powerlifting Championships in South Korea. Murphy’s feat grabbed the attention of Nike, and Murphy was subsequently featured in Nike’s “No Excuses” campaign.

High School East Senior Named Regeneron Scholar

Smithtown High School

East’s Holy Mary Zaher is among 300 students nationwide named scholars in this year’s Regeneron Science Talent Search.

Her research project was “The Correlation Between Peroxisome Levels and Short-Term Memory Loss in a PINK1-/- Rat Model of Parkinson’s Disease.”

The focal point of the study was looking at the cellular level in those who have the disease. To examine the organelle’s levels, a brain region

of interest afflicted by Parkinson’s disease needed to be chosen. Rat models of Parkinson’s disease were used to investigate memory deficits by exploiting rats’ natural tendency to explore.

Holy Mary counted over 45,000 points delineating pyramidal neurons in the selected brain regions. No difference between the intensity of the organelle’s presence and Parkinson’s disease was found. However, this leads to the next step of investigating if the organelle is functioning to its full capacity.

High School East’s science research coordinator Maria Zeitlin says Holy Mary’s research

was especially impressive because she was the one who created it.

“Ms. Zaher’s work investigating Parkinson’s disease utilized rat brain tissue to probe the presence of damage due to reactive oxygen species on brain cells. Often students are given projects to work on. What makes this extra special is that it was a project she created. It was a very clever investigation performed after pondering what was seemingly a simple question in theory, but complicated for a high school student to actually execute, and she did so at such an advanced level. She is well-deserving of this

honor and I am so proud of her! Her work involved countless hours including weekends reading research journals and executing the experiment. She exhibited incredible resilience as her data was still coming in right up until days before the STS deadline.”

RV Rentals

(NAPSI)— Thousands of Americans have opted out of airline tickets and hotel reservations in favor of RV rentals, a safer method of travel that allows for selfcontained excursions with a bedroom, bathroom and kitchen all on-board. Learn how at www.RVshare.com.

This exhibit features Winning artists from 2022 Members Showcase (Rhoda Gordon, Karin Dutra, Paul Mele), 2022 Long Island Landscape from Awe to Action (Renee Caine, Catherine Rezin, Angela Stratton)

Holtsville artist Renee Caine is a realist or representational painter who specializes in watercolor and oil paintings. “My paintings are a visual diary of where I have been and what I have seen. Striving to capture the calm and the tranquility of the places I paint, my work focuses on the beauty of texture, light, shadow and contrast.

Port Jefferson artist Karin Dutra primarily works in pastels and oils.

“My inspiration always comes from capturing a moment in time that evokes a special feeling within me. I hope to encourage people to see a more peaceful path through nature’s beauty.”

Port Jefferson Station artist Rhoda Gordon’s art is emboldened with color

and textural elements that are both abstract and representational. The artist enjoys painting the local landscape and local street scenes as well as “pop art”, urban street scenes, still life, and floral.

Island Park photographer Paul Mele’s series Confinement speaks to the trials and tribulations Paul faced either physically or metaphorically throughout his lengthy rehabilitation after a car accident. The series takes us through the spaces of Paul’s life during a three-month hospital stay, nine months in a wheelchair and three years of physical therapy. As brief introductions to stories not fully told, his photographs invite us to explore and reinterpret these spaces and consider the attitudes and state of mind of those who occupy them in a world far less simple than it sometimes seems.

Nesconset artist Catherine Rezin spent most of my career as a Commercial Artist and is now enjoying the freedom

chosen over 200 other submissions and she earned a $2500 scholarship.

Olivia had to write and record a 3-5 minute broadcast script on a patriotic theme, competing for more than $2.3 million

in college scholarships and incentives.  This year’s theme was “Why is the Veteran Important.”  For her submission Oliva was honored by Smithtown VFW Post 10870.

Pond Gallery

and joy of creating art for her own desire. “Inspired by the beauty of nature, I never run out of sources of inspiration living on Long Island. I am in awe of the spectacular surroundings that are always around me and am passionate in my desire to convey these images in my art.”

Selden artist Angela Stratton was inspired to

become an artist in her early years of employment at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Always immensely intrigued by the great masters, Angela pursued her education in the master’s tradition of academic realism focusing on the Portrait and Figure. but enjoys still life and plein air landscape painting as well. “I love

being able to dedicate each and every day to the art of creating.”
