From that, we believe that the mutation of this receptor could be part of the pathway that causes these neurodevelopmental diseases.” The 300 scholars were selected from 1,804 applications received from 603 high schools across 46 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and eight other countries. Scholars were chosen based on their exceptional research skills, commitment to academics, innovative thinking and promise as scientists as demonstrated through the submission of their original, independent research projects, essays and recommendation. The 300 scholars hail from 185 American and international high schools in 37 states, China, Switzerland and Singapore, including three homeschools. The Regeneron Science Talent Search provides students with a national stage to present original research and celebrates the hard work and novel discoveries of young scientists who are bringing a fresh perspective to significant global challenges. This year, research projects cover topics from tracking countries’ progress on sustainable development
goals to the impact of states’ individual COVID-19 responses, and from improving the tools used to diagnose Alzheimer’s to analyzing the effects of virtual learning on education. “Amid an unprecedented and ongoing global health crisis, we are incredibly inspired to see such an extraordinary group of young leaders who are using the power of STEM to solve the world’s most intractable challenges,” said Maya Ajmera, president and CEO of Society for Science, publisher of Science News and 1985 Science Talent Search alum. “The ingenuity and creativity that each one of these scholars possesses has shown just how much intellectual curiosity and passion can thrive, even in difficult times.” On Jan. 20, 40 honorees will be named Regeneron Science Talent Search finalists. The finalists will then compete for more than $1.8 million in awards during a week-long competition taking place March 10-16. “We’re over the moon,” Zeitlin said. “The Science Talent Search is considered the nation’s most prestigious scientific competition.”

Maria Zeitlin’s science students gathered in Room 136 at Smithtown High School East on Jan. 6 for the annual revealing of the list of Regeneron Science Talent Search scholars. The results of the prestigious competition did not disappoint. Jonathan Chung and Sarah Schubel were recognized among 300 international scholars in the Regeneron Science Talent Search 2022. The competition is the nation’s oldest and most prestigious science and math competition for high school seniors. The 300 scholars and their schools each will be awarded $2,000. High School East was one of only three high schools in Suffolk County with multiple honorees. Chung’s project was entitled, “Microbial Associations Constrain Coral Adaptations to Heat Stress: An Integrative MultiDataset Analysis,” which studied impacts of global warming on coral reefs. “You have high concentrations of greenhouse gasses, which ultimately impact coral reefing — which is when you have the coral that expels symbiont, giving it a white color,” Chung said. “The basis of my project was finding out the key players in the coral microbiome, which ultimately contribute to coral health, and to try to find trends in which thermophilic, or heatloving, bacteria are present under these increased ocean temperatures.” Schubel’s project was entitled, “Loss of NMDA Receptor Signaling Results in Excess Proliferation of CNS and Neural CrestDerived Cells.” “We mutated a receptor inside the brain of zebrafish,” Schubel said. “And then, based on the physical effects of that, we found that a lot of them relate to what you see in neurodevelopmental diseases and other related

PSEG Long Island Employees Spread Holiday Cheer
SUFFOLK ZONE 2 - NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - WEDNESDAY JANUARY 19, 2022 - FEBRUARY 1, 2022 • WWW.LONGISLANDMEDIAGROUP.COM
Co-Workers Donate Toys And Send Cards To Neighbors Across Long Island
The holidays were a little brighter across Long Island, thanks to the generosity and thoughtfulness of PSEG Long Island employees. By participating in the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree Program, an employee-led toy drive and a holiday greeting card campaign, dozens of coworkers helped spread cheer and hope this holiday season for neighbors in need. More than 120 co-workers fulfilled holiday wishes for 105 Suffolk County children enrolled in the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program. From bikes, tablets and video games, to toys, dolls and action figures, several hundred gifts were donated in all. A handful of PSEG Long Island employees also helped distribute the goodies and load clients’ vehicles the week before Christmas at the Salvation Army’s Riverhead headquarters. Here’s what some employees said about participating: “I am happy to carry on this tradition that my family started when I was a kid,” said Ashley Arndt of Dix Hills. “We always sponsored a family in need and it felt so good to support these sweet
boys and girls. I am thankful that PSEG Long Island is committed to supporting our community and helping our neighbors and friends. This company makes it easy to help so many diverse people across Long Island.” “Being raised by a single mom of three children, I remember how important it was for my mom to have access to a program like this that would allow for a few more gifts to be put under the tree on Christmas morning, said Brittney Schmidt of Smithtown. “I am happy that now I’m able to give to other families. I am also grateful to work for a company that values the importance to giving back to our communities.” “Participating in the Salvation Army Angel Tree Program over the years has always been a rewarding experience that brings to light the spirit of Christmas,” said Diane Finocchio of Farmingdale. “I’ve been supporting the Angel Tree program since my start with PSEG Long Island,” said Krysten Acevedo of Center Moriches. “I do it because I hate the idea of a child waking up on Christmas
morning to nothing under their tree and wondering what it was they did to get on Santa’s naughty list.” The Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program serves Long Island children from newborn to 16 years old, and relies on the support of individual donors, companies and organizations to make lasting impressions by fulfilling the wish lists of children and families who might otherwise not receive gifts. During the past eight years, PSEG Long Island employees have donated presents to more than 1,200 families who live in the company’s service area. It’s just one of the many ways in which the company gives back to the community. An employee-led toy collection drive was also hosted. More than $1,600 in dolls, board games, electronic toys, trucks, gift cards and more were given to the following organizations to distribute to local children and their families: In Suffolk County: • Bellport Hagerman East Patchogue Alliance in Bellport • Family Service League in Mastic •First Presbyterian Church of Northport • Gerald Ryan Outreach Center in Wyandanch • Lighthouse Mission in Bellport • Sunshine Alternative
Education & Prevention Center in Port Jefferson Station In Nassau County: • Five Towns Community Center in Lawrence • Hempstead Hispanic Civic Association • Long Island Council of Churches in Freeport • Mary Brennan INN Soup Kitchen and Center for Transformative Change Resource Center in Hempstead • NAACP Hempstead Branch • Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church in Roosevelt • The United Methodist Church of Hempstead These agencies, along with several senior centers, assisted living homes and hospitals were also sent
holiday cheer in the form of greeting cards. Nearly 1,000 PSEG Long Island employees participated, offering their own personal holiday messages in the cards that featured the image of a snowy PSEG Long Island bucket truck. The cards were delivered along with candy canes, LED night lights or large print puzzle books to the organizations above, as well as the following: • The Bristal Assisted Living communities across the area • EAC Network Senior Community Service Center in North Merrick and distributed through the agency’s Meals on Wheels program • Glen Cove Senior Center • Glen Cove YMCA • Northport Veterans
Affairs Medical Center • The Northwell Health Orzac Center for Rehabilitation in Valley Stream • The Northwell Health Stern Family Center for Rehabilitation in Manhasset • The United Methodist Church of Hempstead • Huntington YMCA Along with providing safe, reliable power, community service is an important part of PSEG Long Island’s culture. Employees demonstrate their care and support for their neighbors through many community service projects and activities throughout the year. Additional photos of these activities and other holiday-related activities are available at https://flic.kr/s/ aHBqjzvSmZ.

Tackan Families Donate Clothing, Other Items To Needy
A truckload of used clothing and other items is headed to needy families thanks to the generosity of the Tackan Elementary School community. Students in Bill Schroeder’s fifth grade class helped load nearly 300 bags of recently collected clothing, car
seats, bedding, stuffed animals and small toys on Tuesday, Jan. 11. The truck filled with donated items was bound for a New Jersey distribution hub that will share it domestically and internationally with those in need. Organized by the Tackan Elementary PTA, the
generosity also will benefit the school’s cultural arts program. Once the contents arrive at the charity’s distribution hub and the truck pulls onto a scale, the program will receive a cash donation based on the weight.

If you are looking to upgrade your home, now is the best time to do it. You can save a ton of time & money by starting your next home remodeling project sooner rather than later. Prices for home remodeling products like windows, doors, siding, roofing, masnory, and more are continuing to increase monethly. Some of these products have increased over 50% the past year. If you start your project now, you will be able to save and lock in the current price of products before the next price increase. Not only are the prices of material increasing but so is the labor cost. Labor for home remodeling projects have seen increases of over 10% between 2019 and 2021. With all of this said, the sooner you are able to sign a contract for your next home remodeling project the better off you will be. Signing a contract now can save your hundreds or even thousands of dollars on the porject. The other reason you want to start your home remodeling project as soon as possible is becuase of the delays in manufacturing. With the raw material shortage in the world right now, products are taking months to be made, shipped, and delievered. Some products have seen limitations placed on certain styles or colors in order for the manufacturer to increase production of supplies to meet the current demand. Starting to decide on the specific style, colors, and materials you want for your project now is smart. You want to make sure everything you want is available and placed to order as soon as possible to ensure your project is done in time for Spring.

The Atelier At Flowerfield
A Lecture By Randall Digiuseppe On “Nocturnes: A Brief History Art Of The Night Sky”
The Atelier at Flowerfield is excited to announce a lecture by Randall DiGiuseppe on “Nocturnes: A Brief History Art of the Night Sky” on January 26, 2022, at 7PM. Join Instructor Randall DiGiuseppe as he takes you on a night journey through history of the arts. Explore different artists and landmark works from the Paleolithic Age to modern times and how our everevolving understanding of the night sky has influenced art. Randall DiGiuseppe has been in love with Astronomy since first looking through a telescope at the age of eight. “We spend half of our lives under the night sky and not nearly enough
time contemplating it,” DiGiuseppe said. Randall is a classically trained artist, designer and lecturer whose career has spanned over 30 years. His passion for classical art technique & art history began as a freshman at the High School of Art & Design in New York City in 1983. This passion continued to grow and led him to pursue further classical study at the Art Students League of New York, Pratt Institute, Long Island Academy of Fine Art and ultimately culminated in his MFA at the New York Academy of Art. The intersection of his lifelong passions led him to the Custer Institute and Observatory in Southold, NY where he holds a seat
on the Custer Observatory Committee and gives yearround talks on navigating and drawing the night sky. Randall was awarded the Astronomical League’s Messier Award in 2016 for illustrating Messier’s entire catalogue of deep sky objects while observing through his telescope. Randall also created a series of work based around the traditional Zodiac constellations. To register please contact The Atelier at Flowerfield (631)250-9009 or www. atelierflowerfield.org for more information. The Atelier at Flowerfield is located at 2 Flowerfield, Suite 9, Saint James, NY, 11780

This January, to kick off a new year of giving, Jersey Mike’s Subs throughout Long Island will be donating excess change to the Athletes of Special Olympics New York. Mitch Cohen, member of the organization’s Board of Directors and franchisee with Jersey Mike’s, has been instrumental in this effort. “We are so grateful to Mitch and Jersey Mike’s for this donation opportunity,” said Stacey Hengsterman, President and CEO of Special Olympics New York. “Mitch has been and continues to be an amazing advocate of our movement. We’re happy to have him.” When customers purchase food from participating Jersey Mike’s locations, they’ll be invited to round their change up to the nearest dollar. The rounded funds will then be donated to Special Olympics New York. “Nothing is better than being able to give back,” said Cohen. “Being part of the Special Olympics New York Board gives me the chance to do that and watch these amazing athletes continue to grow into the best people they can be.” The following Jersey Mike’s locations will participate in the match: Bay Shore Bayport Bellmore Bethpage Carle Place Commack Deer Park East Northport Farmingdale Freeport Garden City Park Hauppauge Lake Ronkonkoma Lindenhurst Lynbrook Massapequa Park Oceanside Port Jefferson Station Selden Stony Brook Uniondale

Money And Energy Saving Tips For The New Year PSEG Long Island is sharing tips for customers to save money and reduce their energy consumption every day of the year. National Cut Your Energy Costs Day was launched to encourage consumers to explore energy- saving opportunities. In the past eight years, since PSEG Long Island was established, business and residential customers throughout Long Island and the Rockaways have done just that. More than $380 million in rebates have been distributed to customers through PSEG Long Island’s energy
efficiency programs. That’s a savings of more than 2.1 billion kilowatts of energy since 2014 – and enough electricity to power more than 270,000 homes for an entire year. These tips can help customers save money and energy any time of year: · Replace inefficient incandescent light bulbs with LED bulbs since, according to the U.S. Department of Energy, lighting accounts for about 15% of the electricity used in the home, and LEDs use approximately 75% less energy and last up to 25 times longer.
· Reduce “phantom power” by using energy efficient power strips or unplugging electronic devices when they’re not in use. Items plugged into outlets use electricity even when they’re turned off. · Use a programmable thermostat to automatically manage your home’s heating and cooling needs. ENERGY STAR estimates that properly used programmable thermostats can save about $180 a year. In addition, PSEG Long Island offers rebates on smart thermostats. · Lower your thermostat

by just one degree to potentially reduce your heating bill up to 3%. Lowering it two degrees during the day and five to 10 degrees at night will save even more. · Install timers and motion detectors to automatically manage indoor and outdoor lighting and help ensure lights are not on when they’re not needed. · Ceiling fans can be used to save energy in winter. Setting a fan to rotate clockwise on low pulls cool air toward the ceiling, pushing warm air down into a room. · Seal windows and doorframes with weather stripping or caulk, and remove or cover window air conditioners to help to prevent drafts that waste energy and money. · Install a high efficiency air source heat pump (ASHP) to lower energy usage, save money and provide greater comfort
in cold and hot months. Robust rebates are available from PSEG Long Island’s Home Comfort Program for ducted ASHP units, ducted geothermal heat pumps and ductless mini split systems. Additionally, PSEG Long Island’s Home Comfort PLUS program offers enhanced rebates for customers who meet certain income qualifications. · More moneysaving ideas and rebate information are available at https://www.psegliny.com/ saveenergyandmoney/ energystarrebates. Independent annual evaluations by Demand Side Analytics (DSA) have found PSEG Long Island’s energy efficiency and renewable energy programs to be costeffective and energy-saving. DSA’s 2020 evaluation showed that PSEG Long Island Energy Efficiency Program, including rebates, generated $1.74 in
benefits to society for every $1 in costs to operate the program. For additional information, visit: h t t p s : / / w w w. p s e g l i n y. com/efficiency. Join the conversation online using the hashtag: #CutYourEnergyCostsDay.
