Scouting Achievements This past Sunday, Legislator Leslie Kennedy continued showing her support and appreciation for the Boy Scouts of America by presenting a proclamation to Anthony M. Joy, who has risen to the rank of Eagle Scout in Troop 356. The ceremony honoring this achievement took place at the Centereach Fire Department For his service project, Anthony designed and built
an outdoor kitchen for Hobbs Farm, a non-profit organization who provides fresh wholesome produce to those who need a helping hand. The new kitchen is complete with four corner posts, a shingled roof, and counter space with shelves underneath. It’s a big step up from the portable carport and folding tables the farm employed for prior barbecues and provides shelter for the organization’s

Students at Branch Brook Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District kicked off the new year with a New Year’s Eve Ball on January 6th. While everyone celebrated the new year with their family and friends on January 1st,
the ball was a special time to ring in 2017 with their Branch Brook family. Dressed in their best party attire, students celebrated during their lunch periods by taking photos and dancing with their friends. The Branch Brook Parent Teacher Association handed out
popcorn and apple juice to toast the new year. At the end of the ball, students counted down as they watched a recording of the ball dropping in Times Square and the school even designed their own ball to drop in the cafeteria.

The Transition of Power January 20th 2017
On January 20th, 2017, Donald J. Trump will be sworn in as the 45th President of the United States of America. The Transition of Power from one President to the next President is a tradition that has always ensured a peaceful and seamless changeover to the incoming new administration. Throughout this particular election cycle, beginning with the primaries and going through Election Day - and still continuing to this day - our country has been very divided. It is now time for everyone to accept the results of the choice of the American people and stand together behind this new administration. There have been many times in history that the Transition of Power has been tested. Some examples of these times were the transitions between President Kennedy to President Lyndon B. Johnson after Kennedy was assassinated;
President Nixon to President Gerald Ford after Nixon had to resign; and President Clinton to President George W. Bush after the 2000 election recounts. In all cases, the American people ultimately accepted the outcomes and showed respect to the Office of the Presidency of the United States of America. They did the right thing and worked together for the good of our country. We are now at the same point, and we all need to support our new incoming President. The disrespect and negativity that so many are displaying is a complete disgrace and an embarrassment to all of us and to our country worldwide. President Elect Trump’s priorities of jobs, better trade deals, strengthening our military, a new, improved and more affordable healthcare system, schools controlled at the state level, childcare assistance, tax
adjustments, cutting unnecessary government spending, reducing the national debt, securing our borders to keep America safe from terrorists, drugs and criminals, and always keeping America and Americans first will all begin January 20th, 2017. We have already seen some of President Elect Trump’s positive accomplishments, even before he has taken office. He has succeeded at keeping several large companies’ plants open and operating here in the USA, such as Carrier and Ford. This has saved many jobs and already helped many Americans. We should all be looking forward to many more positive actions and results from this new administration. We are one country, and we should all have and work toward common goals. January 20th, 2017 is our opportunity. God Bless the United States of America!

How’s it Going? So… how is everyone’s year coming along so far? Are we still avidly pursuing our New Year’s resolutions, or have we moved on to other, more realistic, goals? Sure, we’re only slightly more than two weeks underway into 2017, but even the most promising “fresh starts” have been known to bite the dust not even a few days in to a new year. Personally, I don’t see the point. Chances are, the second something negative happens, your entire motivation will be thrown off anyway; so, rather than give yourself unnecessary reason for disappointment, keep your goals open and flexible – much like life. The best-laid plans more often than not do not go according to any pre-conceived notion of how things are “supposed” to transpire. The sooner we
realize this, and accept it, the better off we will be in the long run. Take the weather, for instance. Mother Nature is not a force that can be predicted, especially at this time of year. Make all the plans you wish; chances are, they will be forced into “rain check” mode far too frequently. Personally, I’ve already had an entire weekend’s worth of appointments and obligations squashed due to snow, and have tentatively (fingers crossed) rescheduled for the next available opportunity. To be continued… until spring, most likely. And then there are the roads. Traveling on Long Island is a skill to be mastered under the best of circumstances. Throw in some inclement weather and it’s a regular three ring circus, complete with a collection of characters who
either A) should not be on the road at all, in any season; or B) had best make like the groundhog and hibernate for the duration of the winter. Crawling, speeding, braking unnecessarily, swerving all over the road… such are just a few examples of the skills witnessed daily on my fairly brief commute to and from work. Throw in a flurry or two, and forget about it. Such is the state of life in January. And if not now, there are similar factors to face each and every subsequent month of the year. So take your resolutions – or whatever form of self-improvement you have documented for yourself in 2017 – keep them in your back pocket as a reminder, and move onward and upward. There will be a rainbow over the horizon soon enough. Just don’t drive off the road admiring it.

Eighteen Hauppauge High School juniors and seniors attended the 20th Annual Student New York State Theatre Education Association (NYSTEA) Conference, January 6th8th, 2017, at the Villa Roma Resort in Callicoon, New York. This is the 18th year that Hauppauge High School has sent students representatives to the NYSTEA student conference. The NYSTEA conference creates an opportunity for approximately 800 high school students from across New York State to come together for a full weekend of learning and peer interaction. The students attend workshops given by colleges, universities and other theatre professionals, as well as network with one another and experience a variety of performances throughout the Conference. For the NYSTEA student conference delegates, this conference is a highlight of their high school career. Stock up on healthy recipes. Purchase cookbooks that showcase healthy recipes, or peruse the internet for heathy recipes. Many websites cater to health-conscious foodies who do not want to sacrifice their health to enjoy delicious meals. Choose smart fats. All oils are loaded in

Add heat for flavor. Spicy pepper, dry mustard and other zesty flavor enhancers can make foods taste delicious without added calories. Try low-fat or fat-free dairy. Substitute low-fat alternatives for full-fat dairy items. For example, Greek yogurt can sometimes be used in place of less healthy ingredients such as mayonnaise. Trim excess fats. Prepare meats and poultry well by trimming the fat and skin to make the final product even healthier.
The Importance of Annual Health Exams
Annual health exams are a key component of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. A person may not see the need to visit the doctor if he or she is feeling well, but not every disease or condition manifests itself in a way that men and women can detect. No two physical exams will be exactly alike, but many will share some general features.
Health History A crucial element of a physical exam will include a thorough health history if the physician doesn’t already have one on file. The doctor will take time to ask questions about family history of illness, health habits, any vices (smoking, drinking alcohol, etc.), exercise schedule and diet. If there is a possible hereditary health condition running through your family, the doctor may suggest certain testing and make note of
potential signs to look for in the future.
Current Ailments After discussing a patient’s history, the doctor may ask if they are having any problems they cannot explain. These can include changes in eating or sleeping patterns; aches and pains; lumps or bumps and other abnormalities. Again, the presence of symptoms may be indicative of illness or physical changes, but not all diseases produce obvious symptoms. Vital Signs A doctor will check a patient’s vital signs during the physical. Areas the doctor will look at include but are not limited to: • Heart rate: This measures the speed at which the heart is pumping. Normal resting heart rate
values range from 60 to 100 beats per minute. • Blood pressure: A blood pressure cuff will measure systolic and diastolic pressure. Systolic pressure measures the force with which the blood is pushing through the arteries. The diastolic blood pressure is the pressure in the arteries between beats, when the heart rests. The systolic (top number) should be below 120, while the bottom should be less than 80, according to the Mayo Clinic. • Respiration rate: The doctor will measure the number of breaths taken in a minute. WebMD says between 12 and 16 breaths per minute is normal for a healthy adult. Breathing more than 20 times per minute can suggest heart or lung problems. • Pulse oximetry: Johns Hopkins School of Medicine says pulse
oximetry is a test used to measure the oxygen level (oxygen saturation) of the blood. It is a measure of how well oxygen is being sent to the parts of your body furthest from your heart. Normal pulse oximeter readings usually range from 95 to 100 percent. Values under 90 percent are considered low. Physical Exam The examination will also include physical components. The doctor will perform a visual inspection of the skin and body for any abnormalities, such as the presence of skin cancer. The physician may feel the abdomen to check that internal organs are not distended. Females’ physical examinations may include breast and pelvic exams. Comprehensive Testing
In addition to the exam at the office, the physical may include an electrocardiogram, or EKG, to check electrical activity of the heart; blood count and cholesterol checks through bloodwork; body mass index testing; X-rays or MRIs and bone-density tests.

On Wednesday, January 11th, the Long Island Ducks made the second of their four annual TD Bank “Take a Duck to Class” essay contest visits at R.J.O. Intermediate School. Fourth grade student Georgia Grace “GG” Berriola penned a winning essay on why firefighters are heroes in her community. The school hosted an assembly in their auditorium for the fourth grade class. School principal Rudy Massimo and Ducks Assistant GM/ Senior VP of Sales Doug Cohen congratulated GG on writing such a phenomenal essay. Following opening
entire class enjoyed a private autograph session in their classroom and also received gift bags full of merchandise, courtesy of TD Bank and the Ducks.
