The dinner also featured a presentation by guest speaker Michael Devonshire, a renowned architectural conservator with more than 25 years of experience in the field of historic preservation. “The holiday season is a magical time at the Old Westbury Gardens, and we were proud to host such an illustrious group this year for our Annual December Dinner,” said Nancy Costopulos, President and CEO of Old Westbury Gardens. “This year’s event was incredibly successful, as we were able to raise enough funds to help support several exciting preservation initiatives for 2017. We were thrilled to
see so many familiar faces and some new ones at our premier fundraising event.” Through the incredible generosity of distinguished guests, Old Westbury Gardens was successfully able to raise enough funds to support significant renovation projects to preserve the Westbury House’s unique aesthetic and create new programs for guests to enjoy for generations to come. Hitting a High Note The Harborfields Central School District is pleased to announce that 43 students from Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School, Oldfield Middle School and Harborfields High School have been selected to take part in prestigious Suffolk County Music Educators’ Association (SCMEA) AllCounty honor groups. The Commack Fire Department helped Ex-Chief Fred Meuser celebrate a memorable 86th birthday. Commack volunteer firefighters visited him at the Huntington Hills Center for Rehabilitation in Melville on December
30 for his 86th birthday. This was an unexpected surprise for Meuser, seated center, as firefighters arrived with his favorite Chinese food and they had an enjoyable lunch together. Meuser served as Chief of the Commack Fire Department from 1981-

Coaches and fall athletes from the Northport-East Northport School District recently received School of Distinction Recognition by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) for their commitment to sportsmanship. The 42 fall teams include those from Northport High School, Northport Middle School and East Northport Middle School.
To earn this distinction, the district had to obtain a high overall rating as outlined in the Section XI sportsmanship rating program. Lost Pages By: Jamie Lynn Ryan
It was only after a recent conversation with a friend that I realized I don’t read nearly as often as I used to, or would like to … ever, really. I’m not sure when my love of books took a backseat to … what, exactly, I couldn’t even tell you. But it certainly has. Back in elementary school, I used to belong to whatever book-of-the-month club they were peddling in our reading class, subscribing to the various newsletters and lists of new releases. As I moved up to middle and high school, English class was one of my favorites, and I devoured whatever literary material the lesson plan called for. From short stories and plays to novels and poetry, I
delighted in broadening my horizons. College was much of the same, with special emphasis on those deeper philosophical texts, followed by detailed term papers analyzing each word and phrase and my interpretation of them. Leisurely, perhaps not; but the academic appreciation for such historical works was certainly not lost on me. Since then – in the last decade or so – I can probably count the number of books I have actually read cover to cover. That’s not to say I haven’t attempted a few series from time to time – namely, the five-part Game of Thrones collection – only to fall off track and wind up rereading those very same pages I pored over just a few
months back. As it is, I barely manage to skim through my Rolling Stone subscription, and that only after it is several months outdated. My hometown library card has long since expired, and I have yet to set foot in my new local one in the four years since I moved. Aside from the occasional Barnes & Noble purchase, my book collection has remained status quo. I wouldn’t call reading more a “resolution,” exactly, but it is something I would very much like to invest more time in. Even one book per month would be a vast improvement at this point. And, this time, there will be no term papers due upon completion.

Creativity and science will come together beginning in January as FIRST® Tech Challenge teams, comprised of students age 12 to 18, along with their mentors, will demonstrate their problem-solving skills, creative thinking, teamwork, competitive play, sportsmanship and sense of community. More than 46,000 students in almost 20 countries will program robots to compete on a 12-foot by 12-foot field in an alliance format against other teams. Robots are built from a reusable platform, powered by Android technology and
programmed using Java. From that select pool of scholars, 40 student finalists are invited to Washington, D.C., in March to participate in final judging, display their work to the public, meet with notable scientists, and compete for awards, including the top award of $250,000.

Dinner Supports Gardens Old Westbury Gardens recently hosted its Annual December Dinner, the organization’s marquis fundraising event that brings together a renowned group of inspiring community members interested in maintaining Long Island’s rich history and traditions. The event, hosted by this year’s December Dinner Chairpersons Robert and Deb Hussey of Garden City, was held in the historic Red Ballroom and West Porch of Westbury House to recreate the
holiday celebrations as imagined in the early 20th century for an exclusive and extraordinary holiday experience. “Dining in a room that holds so much history and nostalgia was truly a unique experience for all who attended,” said Robert Hussey, Co-Chair of the December Dinner. “Complete with the historic Christmas decorations that lined the mantle and the rest of the room, it was like being transported through time. We are so grateful to those who took the time
to participate in this event and for their generosity to ensure that this fundraising event helped to preserve the future of Old Westbury Gardens for years to come.” During this year’s Annual December Dinner, renowned preservationist and Old Westbury Gardens Board Trustee Dick Gachot was honored for his long-term support for Old Westbury Gardens. Throughout his 40 year relationship with Old Westbury Gardens, Gachot has been involved in
countless preservation projects. The dinner also featured a presentation by guest speaker Michael Devonshire, a renowned architectural conservator with more than 25 years of experience in the field of historic preservation. “The holiday season is a magical time at the Old Westbury Gardens, and we were proud to host such an illustrious group this year for our Annual December Dinner,” said Nancy Costopulos, President and CEO of Old Westbury Gardens. “This year’s event
was incredibly successful, as we were able to raise enough funds to help support several exciting preservation initiatives for 2017. We were thrilled to see so many familiar faces and some new ones at our premier fundraising event.” Through the incredible generosity of distinguished guests, Old Westbury Gardens was successfully able to raise enough funds to support significant renovation projects to preserve the Westbury House’s unique

Add heat for flavor. Spicy pepper, dry mustard and other zesty flavor enhancers can make foods taste delicious without added calories. Try low-fat or fat-free dairy. Substitute low-fat alternatives for full-fat dairy items. For example, Greek yogurt can sometimes be used in place of less healthy ingredients such as mayonnaise. Trim excess fats. Prepare meats and poultry well by trimming the fat and skin to make the final product even healthier.

Annual health exams are a key component of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. A person may not see the need to visit the doctor if he or she is feeling well, but not every disease or condition manifests itself in a way that men and women can detect. No two physical exams will be exactly alike, but many will share some general features.
Health History A crucial element of a physical exam will include a thorough health history if the physician doesn’t already have one on file. The doctor will take time to ask questions about family history of illness, health habits, any vices (smoking, drinking alcohol, etc.), exercise schedule and diet. If there is a possible hereditary health condition running through your family, the doctor may suggest certain testing and make note of
potential signs to look for in the future.
Current Ailments After discussing a patient’s history, the doctor may ask if they are having any problems they cannot explain. These can include changes in eating or sleeping patterns; aches and pains; lumps or bumps and other abnormalities. Again, the presence of symptoms may be indicative of illness or physical changes, but not all diseases produce obvious symptoms. Vital Signs A doctor will check a patient’s vital signs during the physical. Areas the doctor will look at include but are not limited to: • Heart rate: This measures the speed at which the heart is pumping. Normal resting heart rate

The systolic (top number) should be below 120, while the bottom should be less than 80, according to the Mayo Clinic. • Respiration rate: The doctor will measure the number of breaths taken in a minute. WebMD says between 12 and 16 breaths per minute is normal for a healthy adult. Breathing more than 20 times per minute can suggest heart or lung problems. • Pulse oximetry: Johns Hopkins School of Medicine says pulse
oximetry is a test used to measure the oxygen level (oxygen saturation) of the blood. It is a measure of how well oxygen is being sent to the parts of your body furthest from your heart. Normal pulse oximeter readings usually range from 95 to 100 percent. Values under 90 percent are considered low. Physical Exam The examination will also include physical components. The doctor will perform a visual inspection of the skin and body for any abnormalities, such as the presence of skin cancer. The physician may feel the abdomen to check that internal organs are not distended. Females’ physical examinations may include breast and pelvic exams. Comprehensive Testing
In addition to the exam at the office, the physical may include an electrocardiogram, or EKG, to check electrical activity of the heart; blood count and cholesterol checks through bloodwork; body mass index testing; X-rays or MRIs and bone-density tests.
