Family Service League, a Long Island based nonprofit human service organization, is proud to announce that two additional Caregiver Supports Groups have been formed. These additional Northfork sites give Long Islanders eight convenient locations throughout Suffolk County, from as far west as Huntington, to and to both North an d South Forks. With generous support from the Suffolk County Office for the Aging, FSL has provided FREE Caregiver Support Services to individuals caring for a person with disabilities (over age 60) since 2005.

These services include individual counseling, support groups and trainings. Timely topics such as estate planning, stress management and nutrition are discussed.

On average, FSL has seen 85 clients each month in 1:1 counseling and support

groups during calendar year 2017. These groups provide a safe space where caregivers can share their experiences, concerns and successes. It is also a great venue to learn more about community resources.

According to a 2015 National Caregiving survey, more than 42 million family caregivers provide unpaid care for an aging parent, spouse or other loved one so that they may age in place. The value of the care is estimated at $450 billion dollars annually.

Nearly two thirds (64%) of caregivers report feeling emotionally stressed, but 94 % say that it is important for them to provide the care for their loved one so they can continue to live independently in their own home.

“Families often find themselves thrust into caregiving situations based on a crisis situation.

They can become quickly overwhelmed by the enormity of the caregiver role and their own limitations based on distance, job obligations, financial restrictions, and other family responsibilities,” said Karen Boorshtein, FSL President. “This is compounded by the lack of information about available services. FSL support groups provide the resources families need and there are no fees charged to those who attend.”

Caregiver issues may include stresses related to the actual activities associated with caregiving, fear and worry about a loved one dying, concerns about the caregiver’s own health, and guilt associated with feelings of frustration and anger. This program continues to thrive and develop as a vital resource for caregivers.

this November 28th commemorates the one-year “birthday” of my little baby betta, “Norton von Spudley.”

Of course, one can never know the true date; but considering the tiny speck of a fish he was when I purchased him, I’d venture to guess one year is just about right. Last Thanksgiving was a bit of a rough one, coming just a few short days after the passing of my beloved Buddy the Betta - friend, fish and guest columnist extraordinaire.

While no subsequent pet can ever truly replace him, my little Spud is certainly a welcome addition to the family.

Not that I ever truly began my Christmas shopping at this point; rather, it was always more of a personal shopping spree, with a few gifts thrown in for good measure. I have always been more of the Christmas-in-December type of shopper; anything sooner, and the spirit hasn’t truly set in yet.

And with that, I wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving, no matter what form of celebration the day takes on.

May you enjoy your traditions, or perhaps establish new ones, en route to lasting memories that will take you through Christmas and into 2018.

Cold weekend weather didn’t deter Port Jefferson School District’s Earl L. Vandermeulen High School’s Interact Club from taking part in cleanup efforts at Camp Pa-QuaTuck in Center Moriches.

The students, rakes in hands, worked collaboratively to help ready the facilities and grounds for next year’s participants. The camp’s mission is to enable

children and young adults with physical or developmental disabilities to enjoy a safe and quality program of summertime camping, recreation and education.

The Interact Club students were accompanied by adviser Deidre Filippi and members of the Rotary Club of Port Jefferson and Rocky Point Rotarians in their annual efforts to assist the greater community

through service projects.

“This community service activity offers students the opportunity to see how combining their effort with their peers and members of the community can result in very positive outcomes,” said Filippi. “Interact Club members are learning at an early age that they can positively influence people around them and that is truly rewarding to see.”

Power of Reading Independent reading, shared reading and interactive writing are part of the literacy approach at Port Jefferson School District’s Edna Louise Spear Elementary School and students were excited to participate in several activities surrounding these topics during the annual PARP event and Scholastic Book Fair in November.

Author Visit Inspires Rocky Point School District K-5 students learned about the work of a professional writer when famed children’s book author Julia Cook recently visited Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School and Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School.

Ms. Cook conducted schoolwide assemblies at both buildings, speaking about her start as an author, the process she follows when developing books as well as shared excerpts from some of her most beloved stories.

At FJC, she also conducted two classroom workshops with second-graders to delve into the writing process more deeply. Brainstorming together, the groups learned how to approach story writing from a different angle - rather than putting pencil to paper and begin writing immediately, Ms. Cook encouraged them to first create a list of “take aways” or key facts that they wanted their readers to retain and then work to incorporate those items into their written

pieces.

The inspirational author, who is also considered a parenting expert and inspirational speaker, also conducted a special evening parent workshop in collaboration with the schools’ PTA. Students, faculty and staff members of the Port Jefferson School District helped to honor veterans during their GI GO Fund Nationwide Dress Down Day on November 8th.

Coordinated by the middle school’s student council, the entire

school community was encouraged to remember those who have served the country by wearing jeans and donating $5 to GI GO Fund’s Jeans for Troops program. The program provides assistance to military veterans by helping them find

employment and training, access housing, and secure their educational and health benefits.

Students were also asked to donate $1 to their homeroom teachers at the middle school, with funds designated for the GI GO Fund.

Team Gives Back Continuing what has become a Rocky Point tradition, members of the Rocky Point School District baseball teams recently volunteered at Maureen’s Haven Homeless Shelter.

Lead by team coaches Andrew Aschettino,

Anthony Anzalone and Eric Strovink, the middle school and high school students worked together to set up the location, stock the pantries, provide breakfast, lunch, dinner, supply toiletries, homemade baked goods,

backpacks and even gift cards for meals to a fast food restaurants for future dates. Additionally, the students donated enough socks to give a new pair to each homeless person for weeks to come.

Second-grade students in Christina Capaldi and Erin Glennon’s class at Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School in the Rocky Point School District have been reflecting upon the meaning of symbolism and the traditions that their families have as part of an author study and connected writing project.

After reading the book “The Keeping Quilt” by Patricia Polacco, the students discussed the theme of the book and how a simple piece of cloth was passed down from

generation to generation, each time taking on new life and a new purpose before eventually becoming a quilt that remained a symbol of the family’s love and devotion. Throughout the study, the students discussed the different symbols found in their classroom and throughout the world, each of which carry greater meaning.

From iconic symbols like the Statue of Liberty and the American flag to ones of personal significance to their families, the class discussed what they mean.

The students then drew an item that was passed down in their families on small squares of paper, which were then joined together to make one large class quilt. They created pictures about such things as stuffed animals that previously belonged to their parents to a family riddle book, and then reflected upon their drawings and created short written explanations as to what this item symbolized and why it had great importance to their family.

Tennis Team Honored The Port Jefferson School District is proud to congratulate the girls tennis team for being named League VI Champions. They were recognized at the 2017 Suffolk County Girls Varsity Girls Tennis Awards Dinner at Villa Lombardi

with more than 500 high school tennis players, coaches and families in attendance.

In addition to the team honor, students Ibuki Iwasaki, Devin Rotunno, Jillian Lawler and Nicolina Giannola were named All-League and Aamna

Ali received the Team Sportsmanship Award.

After an exciting season for the team, the evening served to praise and award the student-athletes for their efforts both on and off the court.

Scholarship Recipient

The National Law Enforcement & Firefighters Children’s Foundation (NLEAFCF) today announced Christina Lettich, of Port Jefferson Station, as a recipient of the NLEAFCF Scholarship.

Christina received the scholarship in recognition of her exceptional leadership, community service and scholastic achievement.

Christina was one of 32 students from across the country to receive the award, which is based on a combination of academic merit and financial need.

The recipients are all children of a law enforcement officer or firefighter who was killed or permanently disabled in the line of duty.

“First responders have given so much to defend and protect us. How better to honor their commitment to all of us than to ensure that their children achieve

their full potential?

Helping to pay for their college and complete their higher education is the least we can do to honor these law enforcement and firefighters’ families,” said NLEAFCF President and Founder Al Kahn.

“Christina has demonstrated leadership among her peers and exceptional scholastic achievements, as well as contributing her time and energy to community service. We are proud to be a part of helping Christina achieve her academic goals.”

Christina is a sophomore at the School of Visual Arts in New York, where she is pursuing Fine Arts. At SVA, she is part of the “Cartoon Allies,” where she connects with friends who also love cartooning. Christina has copyrighted over 60 of her own characters so far.

“I want to be a cartoonist and story board artist.

Although I am shy, I can tell great stories through my writing and especially through my drawing. My emotions come through a pencil and marker,” explained Christina. “When I started taking Saturday classes at the School of Visual Arts I really felt like I found my spot.”

In high school, Christina won several awards for art. She was a member of the National Art Honor Society and drama club, and designed and painted sets for school plays and annual high school “trick or treat street,” all the while making Honor Roll.

In her spare time, she volunteered at Studio E art school and for the Special Education Parent Teacher Association. Christina also received the President’s Education Awards and Outstanding Academic Excellence Award.

Christina is described as having a strong commitment to her education, good communication skills and the ability to work well with others. She is a motivated, intelligent, passionate and creatively talented individual with a drive to succeed.

Christina comes from a long family line of law enforcement. Her father was a member of the Suffolk County Police Department disabled in the line of duty in 2003. Her grandfather was a member of the Fire Department of New York and died in the line of duty.

Life Without Limits

Over 250 friends and supporters of United Cerebral Palsy of Long Island gathered for the Life Without Limits Gala at Flowerfield in St. James, NY on October 27th. This year’s event honored Kevin M. O’Connor, President & CEO of Bridgehampton National Bank. The event raised over $200,000. The funds raised will support the comprehensive programs and services that UCP of Long Island provides to thousands of children and adults with disabilities.

“Mr. O’Connor has been a great friend and supporter of our agency and the individuals we serve for many years,” said Stephen H. Friedman, President & CEO of UCP. “We are grateful for all that Kevin has done and tonight we celebrate his commitment and dedication.”

Mr. O’Connor has been involved in special events such as the Life Without Limits Gala and has hosted art exhibits for artists in UCP of Long Island’s Brushstrokes Program at branches of Bridgehampton National

Bank. During the event, Brushstrokes Artist Michelle presented Mr. O’Connor with one of her beautiful paintings to express her appreciation for his support.

The Children Center’s Ukulele Club performed “Little Hands” by Inland Sky to the delight of the audience. The newlyformed club consists of students who learn to play a variety of songs on the exotic instrument. Mr. O’Connor was inducted into the Ukulele Club that evening when the children presented him with a ukulele signed by all the club members.

After the lovely performance, Mr. Friedman introduced The Employment Connection Mobile Training & Education Center, a fully accessible vehicle that provides career services to workers with disabilities who lack easy access to transportation. Paul D’Airo, a client of The Employment Connection, shared his touching story about how the program helped him develop his self-confidence after he

spent years suffering from low self-esteem. D’Airo received a standing ovation for his heartfelt testimony.

Fun-Filled Lesson Educators’ Association, Sinan joined more than 200 tuba students on one stage to perform alongside professional musicians including the renowned tuba ensemble, FivE Euphonium Quartet.

The intricacies of a professional baker were front and center as students enrolled in Ward Melville High School’s gourmet foods classes recently competed in a cupcake wars competition.

Working in small groups, the students conceptualized and sketched designs for exquisite cupcakes based on the theme of either

Now in its 14th dazzling year, Suffolk’s own drivethrough light show promises even more lights, more displays and more festive family fun! The magic runs from December 1st through December 30th (Closed December 24th & December 25th) and is open nightly from 5 p.m. Cost is $20 per car.

Tickets will be sold at the gate only - credit card only, no cash, no presales.

The gala production featured Broadway stars who donated their time for a spectacular onenight only event to help raise money toward and awareness of LIHSA. The much-anticipated annual fundraiser for Long Island’s only public high school for the visual and

performing arts (LIHSA) has become a premier event for the greater theater community.

her Broadway debut as young Elsa in Frozen the Musical, and Anthony Rosenthal, who recently starred as Christian Borle and Stephanie J. Block’s son Jason in Falsettos.

Lana Gordon performed “All That Jazz” from Chicago, having recently starred as Velma Kelly in the Broadway Company

opposite pop icon Brandy. The evening’s show-stopping finale was delivered by Robert Cuccioli, who performed “This is the Moment” from his Tony-nominated role in Jekyll and Hyde.

The entire cast spent the day at LIHSA rehearsing and spending time with students during a Q & A

session where they shared stories about their careers and offered insights to the industry. Theater Tech students worked steadily throughout the day to ensure the technical aspects of the show were executed smoothly.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today announced that the Suffolk County Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation will offer a Sport Fishing on Long Island eight-week instructional course this winter.

Classes will be held on Tuesday nights beginning January 9th, 2018 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the Media Room of the H. Lee Dennison Building, located at 100 Veterans Memorial Highway in Hauppauge.

Flexible make-up classes are also possible for individuals who have conflicting schedules. The regular course fee is $145 per person, with discounts available for children 14 years-old and younger and accompanied by a paid adult registrant for a fee of $90. Veterans or Senior Citizens 65 and older will be charged a fee of $110.00.

Captain Jerry McGrath, a former Montauk charter skipper, avid fisherman and experienced, acclaimed instructor will give first-hand instruction and tips for planning a rewarding day of fishing.

Captain McGrath designed the classes to educate novices as well as the more advanced anglers in all areas of fish finding, bait and lure selection, chumming, fishing locales and “hot spots”, anchoring,

tackle selection, knot and rig tying, and safety.

Students will be treated to the extensive use of audio-visual materials including Power Point slide presentations, videotapes, and detailed handouts. Throughout the course, experienced and expert charter captains will serve as guest speakers, and will address the class participants on dates to be announced.
