One North, a restaurant with a Mediterranean soul, is Anthony Scotto’s newest venture that just opened for business on November 13th! Located in Jericho, this landmark formerly known as the Maine Maid Inn - has endured a multimillion dollar renovation and is now one of the most beautiful restaurants on Long Island.

The property was in dire straits when Mr. Scotto purchased it from the bank. Having sat vacant for several years, vandals stripped the heating and electrical systems; windows and doors were broken and, in most cases, missing; interior and exterior walls were covered with graffiti; the building and property were full of trash, and it was overrun by rodents and wildlife. While the building was rotting and ready to fall down from neglect and water damage, Mr. Scotto and his team were able to maintain part of the structure and reconstructed the chimneys

with the original bricks; the facade is covered with shingles similar to what was original to the building. Today, One North is a luxurious, upscale yet casual, restaurant featuring Mediterranean-inspired cuisine with an open kitchen concept and private banquet rooms.

Anthony Scotto has graciously committed to donating all proceeds from the first week of business at One North to various charities, with a minimum donation of $75,000! The organizations that will receive donations are Heroes to Heroes, Cohen Children’s Medical Center and the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

Heroes to Heroes Foundation is a non-denominational organization which provides spiritual healing, suicide prevention and a peer support program for veterans who suffer from Moral Injury and from PTSD. They also welcome all who have challenges returning to civilian life after their time serving our great country!

Cohen Children’s Medical Center is dedicated to meeting the needs of children, from premature babies to adolescents, while providing the highest level of care. They operate a 202-bed hospital and are the largest provider of pediatric health services in the state of New York!

Lastly, the Breast Cancer Research Foundation is a not-forprofit organization which strives to achieve prevention and a cure for breast cancer. As a nonprofit organization, they provide critical funding for cancer research worldwide to fuel advances in tumor biology, genetics, prevention, treatment, metastasis and survivorship!

I’ve recently taken to listening to the weekly podcasts of an old college friend, centered on the practice of positive psychology and the various methods we can use to incorporate these measures into our daily lives. Topics have ranged from finding our individual purpose in life to reaching long term goals to increasing our kindness toward others and minimizing our natural tendency to be judgmental.

Each episode is broken into three segments - “Science Says,” based on a recent scientific study and the research generated by it; “Life Hack,” helpful tips to incorporate the findings of said study into everyday habits; and “Practitioner’s Corner,” a conversation with

a professional in the field, drawing on his/her experiences in putting positive psychology into practice.

Outside of a couple of psychology courses in high school, I can’t say I’ve ever delved into this area too deeply, much as it does interest me to analyze peoples’ behaviors and how they contribute to our societal mentality. Generally, when one thinks of psychology, it is in a medical context; but this fresh angle has shown that there are plenty of other avenues to explore.

As I listened to the latest episode on my way to work one recent morning, I was particularly struck by the sentiment it touched on - that, too often are we focused on looking ahead, planning for the future, reaching goals… and seldom do we take the time to appreciate the present, to savor the current situation in the way we should. It may

not be where we desire to ultimately wind up; but it is somewhere, and that should count for something.

Taking a moment for yourself, whether by observing the beauty of a sunrise or sunset, unwinding with a glass of wine and a book, listening to a favorite song, even spending time decompressing via yoga or meditation, can make a world of difference in your own universe. There will always be obstacles to overcome; but the more positivity you fill your life with, the easier the negatives will be to navigate.

Simply finding this particular podcast has done wonders itself; taking that 30 minutes weekly to listen to the musings of those on a path to selfdiscovery can only benefit those who are open to receiving their messages. Every day is an exploration; may we enjoy the discoveries each one uncovers along the way.

New Initiatives Continued From 5 field trips using Google cardboard viewers; and making fifth-grade curriculum instructional videos available 24 hours per day, especially important when a student is absent from school.

As part of their goal to encourage excellence through creative learning, grants were also awarded for a Chess Club grant to purchase chess sets and a chess clock for students in the middle school.

The Foundation has awarded more than $10,000 in grants since the 2016-17 school year.

Maureen’s Haven is currently in need of various donations and volunteers. As far as donations, they need the following: latex gloves, cleaning supplies, garbage bags, toilet paper, paper towels, coffee/tea keurig pods, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and of course monetary donations.

They are also in need of people to volunteer their time in the following areas at their day center: assisting in organizing their donation room,

building shelves in the donation room, assisting with office work duties, and assisting with cleaning up the day center. They also need men to serve as overnight staff to watch over the homeless on Monday nights at Aquebogue’s Our Redeemer Church.

Food Class Visits Farm Three Village Central School District’s gourmet food classes run at the secondary level had the chance to experience the agricultural business and discover where the food on their plates is coming from during a recent visit to Sang Lee Farms.

Sang Lee Farms opened in the 1940s and began in the farming industry with Asian produce and

continues to grow in the moderate climate offered by the location between the Long Island Sound and Peconic Bay. Now, the farm has expanded and includes a larger variety of locally grown, organic produce that has gained an excellent reputation.

While touring the farm, students were able to pick, wash and sample items such as specialty baby

greens, herbs, flowers and seasonal vegetables. They also got to purchase items such as salads, spreads and dips made fresh utilizing produce from the farms available at the farm stand.

The students were excited to pick vegetables right from the ground, apples from the trees and bring home the “fruits of their labor” to enjoy with family and friends.

Three Village Central School District’s Ward Melville High School art, graphic design and film students learned about the film industry – particularly the Los Angeles sector – when Class of 1991 graduate and current producer Tara Langton conducted a workshop at the school.

During the in-house program, the students viewed Ms. Langton’s short film “Finding Anissa Jones,” which was accepted into the Stella Adler Academy Short + Sweet Film Festival in Hollywood, and engaged in a question and answer session with the independent

filmmaker. Ms. Langton explained the path she took to create her film — one that she served as a writer, actor and producer on — and her passion for the craft.

“This event was a great eye opening experience for the students, as they were able to understand the vastness of making a film,” said teacher Stephanie DiLorenzo. “By seeing her film, including the outtakes, the students were able to feel validation for what they are doing in the classroom and it was good for them to get input on the process from a different voice.”

As a follow up to the visit,

each student was presented with a tip sheet of advice that Ms. Langton’s team of directors compiled, which included things that they wished they knew when first starting in the industry.

“It was truly helpful to hear from someone in the industry — especially as that someone has the same educational background as each of us,” said junior Jake DePinto. “Knowing how difficult it can be to break through in this industry, her talk was very inspiring and resonated the importance of never giving up on one’s passion and being a strong advocate for your project.”

Designing the Day Students from the Three Village Academy in the Three Village Central School District collaborated with teachers and peers to create artistic Day of the Dead inspired skull patter designs.

During a field trip to Gallery North, the students learned about the significance this holiday plays in the Spanish culture and participated in Spanish lessons. After learning

that the skull designs are based on traditional sugar skulls used to celebrate the holiday in Latin American countries, the students deployed their creativity to create original pieces of art. Equipped with bright colored pencils and black paper, the students sketched intricate designs and collaborated on their personal masterpieces with the help of the teachers in attendance, including

The completed projects will be put on display at the gallery at a later date and a reception will be held in the students’ honor.

A similar project was completed at P.J. Gelinas Junior High School with the eighth-grade students in Mr. Sacco’s art classes.

Folk Dancing Fun

Rocky Point School District’s Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School students, family and staff recently came together to participate in a fun-filled evening of Family Folk Dancing.

This annual event allowed children to bring their parents to school, where together they

participated in several folk dances led by school music teacher Craig Knapp.

This multigenerational experience builds appreciation of the process of music making and community spirit.

Traditional folk dancing promotes building of community, teamwork, discipline, respect and

following instructions.

Folk dance has links with many other subjects, including history, literacy, art, music and physical education. The students enjoyed the event equally, learning valuable social skills as well as improving coordination and confidence.

Stuffed with Love Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School fourth-grade students in the Rocky Point School District showcased their creativity this fall as they fashioned baby scarecrows and raised $912 for the Rocky Point Teachers’ Association Kids in Need Fund.

During the week

before Halloween, each student constructed individual scarecrows using colorful decorations and embellishments. The completed works of art were then placed on display in the hall outside the classrooms and the entire student body was invited to visit the scarecrow patch and vote for their favorite

one by depositing coins in its corresponding donation box.

This project has been a long-standing tradition at JAE, dating back to 1999 when it was first introduced by former teacher Sandy Finn Grunner. To date, the initiative has raised almost $40,000 for kids in need.

Showing They Count The Miller Place School District’s Laddie A. Decker Sound Beach School recently held its annual Unity Day celebration to take a stand against bullying and instill a strong sense of camaraderie and inclusion within the student body.

In partnership with the National Bullying Prevention Center, the Miller Place School District organized this event to unite students in kindness, acceptance and inclusion.

Students showed their support by wearing a uniform shirt, their

favorite team jersey, or a homemade shirt representing their favorite number to school. Each student in the school showcased his or her number to show that every moment and every student counts.

PEAK Festival Four students from Edna Louise Spear Elementary School in the Port Jefferson School District attended the Suffolk County Music Educators’ Association PEAK Festival, a unique celebration of elementary classroom music where

children perform music alongside their parents and music teachers.

Fourth-graders Sophia Bonura, Marco Puopolo, Sadie Salzman and Sadie Tafuro along with teacher Dr. Vanessa Salzman, spent the day at PEAK – Parents,

Educators and Kids – learning, experiencing and performing music. They attended workshops that featured various musical instruments and general music practices.

Christian Avenue Historic District and the Old Bethel Cemetery on the New York State Register of Historic Places.

The district includes many historically significant properties including the Bethel AME Church (est. 1874) and Laurel Hill Cemetery (est.

1815). The Historic District is located along Christian Avenue in Setauket, part of the Three Village community, which was the earliest settlement area in Brookhaven Town (1655).

The Cemetery is located on Christian Avenue, and the corner of Woodfield Road.

Season of Giving

As part of their commitment to community service, Edna Louise Spear Elementary School students in the Port Jefferson School District have created several initiatives this November to give back to their local community and aid those in need this holiday season.

Students are working

together to collect and organize food for donation to 10 Port Jefferson families in time for Thanksgiving.

Organized since 2002 by school counselor Jessica Peterson, the goal is to bring students, teachers and administrators together to make a difference for local families. Donated items as well as food cards to

local supermarkets will be accepted until Nov. 15 and delivered to the recipients in time for a festive and healthy holiday meal.

“It’s a great school project and the students and their families look forward to sharing their generosity with others,” said Ms. Peterson.

Industry Experts Rocky Point High School’s Virtual Enterprise class recently took part in the LIU Entrepreneurship and Leadership Conference held at LIU Post.

During this conference students delivered an elevator pitch for their VE company, network with

and hear from industry experts, and participate in informative breakout sessions.

One highlight from the conference was keynote speaker Al Kahn, CEO of CraneKahn LLC, and a leading figure in the licensing

industry. Students learned about how he grew his licensing empire to include some of the biggest names in the industry, including Cabbage Patch Kids, Pokemon, and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Promoting Unity In honor of National Bullying Prevention Month, the Rocky Point High School Human Rights Club recently promoted Pacer’s National Bullying Prevention Center and Unity Day.

On Unity Day people come together — in schools, communities and online — to send one large ORANGE message of support, hope and unity to show that we are united against bullying and united

for kindness, acceptance and inclusion.

As a result of Rocky Point’s Unity Day fundraising, the Human Rights Club raised $226 for Pacer’s National Bullying Prevention Center.

Lessons on History

As an extension of the new local history and government elective, students from P.J. Gelinas and R.C. Murphy junior high schools recently learned more about their community as they explored the beautiful historic district of Setauket.

Guided by local historians Beverly Tyler and Donna Smith, students enrolled in these courses took a walking tour through time and learned about their community through the ages. Topics

explored included ecological concerns, Native Americans, Colonial Brookhaven, the Revolution and, of course, the Spy Ring that existed in the area.

“Students who are enrolled in this course are being offered so much in the areas of local and Long Island history and are working with the teachers and librarians in their perspective schools in order to advance their research, as well as their literacy skills,” said Three Village K-12 Director

for Social Studies Dr. Paul Gold. “Field trips that pair us with our local historians and the Three Village Historical Society provide wonderful learning opportunities for all students beyond the traditional classroom instruction. We thank TVHS, Donna Strong Smith, and Bev Tyler for working with our ninthgraders and offering a valuable learning experience for all those who attended.”

Enhancing the Essay Rocky Point High School seniors gained valuable feedback on their college essays during a recent “speed read” event hosted in the school’s library.

Organized by business teacher Dorothy Burns and

members of the school’s English department, the event enabled students to meet with representatives from four different colleges and receive input on their essays after having a two to two and a half minute read

through.

Representatives from Keiser University, SUNY Oswego, UMass Lowell and Utica College were among those who took part in this event.

As an extension of the students’ science curriculum, third-grade students at Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School had their classroom lessons come to life during a recent assembly program

provided by the Long Island Science Center in Rocky Point.

During the event, which was called “All About Air,” the students investigated the properties of air using balls, balloons, bags, and

even a hair dryer. Through visual demonstrations, they learned that air takes up space, has weight and exerts pressure, as well as participated in discussion of Bernoulli’s Principle and Pascal’s law.

Creating Community Three Village Central School District’s R.C. Murphy Junior High School students and staff recently reaffirmed their commitment to creating a positive learning environment by taking part in a series of activities in recognition of Unity Day. A sea of orange – the national symbolism for unity/antibullying – blanketed the building throughout the week, including everything from orange bracelets worn by students to construction

paper signs with positive quotes and a mural in the school cafeteria.

Students also reflected upon how to create a sense of unity within their local and global community in their history or English classes and attended a moving assembly program with Rohan Murphy.

Mr. Murphy spoke with the students about the personal struggles he faced after losing both his legs for genetic reasons and how he has realized his dreams — including becoming a collegiate

wrestler — despite what some might consider physical limitations.

The unifying week concluded with grade-level pep rallies during school lunch periods. During this, students were seen wearing orange and were invited to help make a giant U shape.

There were various levels of achievement and potential prizes to be won.

To align with the theme of “Build A Better World”, the levels were an Architect, Construction Worker, Electrician, or a Building Inspector. Tasks to achieve each level included filling out graphic organizers, creating book reports and blogging about their literary experiences and critical interpretations.

Student raffles ranged from a book baskets, family

passes to Fink’s Family Farm, Sky Zone, and the grand prize of an Amazon Echo Dot. The culminating activity consisted of students celebrated their success by participating in a variety of fun educational games and word-based challenges during a “Build a Better World” – themed extravaganza at school. In recognition of their accomplishments, each student received a construction hat and reading certificate.

Star Students Shine Read, a simple but powerful word is all the encouragement students at Edna Louise Spear Elementary School in the Port Jefferson School District need to hear to inspire them to become lifelong learners.

Five students from the school were named “Star Students” by librarian Selinda Stout to promote the importance of literacy and independent reading.

The school’s campaign,

created by Stout, takes place several times per year and is a takeoff of the American Library Association Celebrity READ Campaign.

The students were chosen for their excellent attitude, behavior and work ethic in the library. As a reward, they have their photos displayed on the bulletin board outside of the library along with a summary of their favorite book. Stout also sends

home a printed version of the poster for families to enjoy.

“It’s a pleasure to recognize these students for their motivation for the program and to embrace reading books,” said Stout.

Star students are Kieran Browne – grade 1, Katherine Snaden – grade 2, Violet Carmon – grade 3, Kristina Shterengas – grade 4 and Savannah Florio – grade 5.
