From June through September 2017, 13 New York State Assembly Members worked together to hold a summer long food drive to help combat the issues of hunger and food insecurity on Long Island. “The Summer Food Drive to End Hunger,” coordinated by Long Island Cares – The Harry Chapin Food Bank, was the first of its kind for the nonprofit, as it involved at least one assembly member at a designated location nearly every weekend for four months during the summer.

The elected officials stood outside of supermarkets across Nassau and Suffolk Counties to ask people to donate canned goods and non-perishable items for the regional food bank, operated by Long Island Cares. The total donations were recorded at 20,265 pounds of food, which will

be distributed directly to member agencies of Long Island Cares.

William Gonyou, Community Events and Food Drive Manager for Long Island Cares – The Harry Chapin Food Bank, said that the coordination of the food drive started well over a year ago.

“What made the food drive successful was that all the assemblymen and assemblywomen were vested in it,” Gonyou said. “They showed up.

They participated. They believe in the cause and understand the impact of hunger on Long Island.”

Approximately 316,000 people on Long Island receive emergency food each year – or 64,900 people every week.

Of those, 39 percent are children under 18 years old.

“This Summer Food Drive was not only about

collecting food, but also about impressing upon our communities that people who are hungry need food all year long, not just at Thanksgiving time, but also during the summer,” said Paule T. Pachter, CEO of Long Island Cares, Inc. – The Harry Chapin Food Bank. “It was a remarkable food drive that brought together elected officials and served as a reminder that hunger is real, and it exists during every season and every week of the year on Long Island.”

I love New York City.

Unfortunately, my trips to the Big Apple tend to be few and far between; certainly not for lack of attractions to visit, but for the simple fact that time tends to slip away with the daily grind. Before you know it, months have elapsed, and all those fun day trips you had discussed with family and friends remain unexplored.

Just last weekend, my friend and I headed into Manhattan for a seemingly standard matinee and early dinner, perhaps followed by dessert at the famous Serendipity, one of many tourist spots that I had yet to cross off my checklist.

The day started out smoothly enough, as we landed orchestra seats to the Broadway revival of Miss Saigon, a play I had always regretted not seeing during its original run. The music, the story, the history behind it - all made for a beautiful and moving performance.

During the intermission, a woman of Pakistani descent

seated next to us leaned over and exclaimed, “I love your country!

And New York - it’s my favorite city of all!” She went on to explain that she was in town visiting friends from college, and had decided to spend several days in various cities across the United States. “Now that my children are grown,” she went on, “it’s my time to finally live, to experience all the things I never had the chance to do.”

Delighted that this woman was so enthralled with our hometown, my friend and I thanked her for sharing this sentiment and, later, reflected on what a wonderful mentality she had, seizing the opportunity to travel and see the world all by herself, one city at a time, to truly appreciate those things that so many of us take for granted.

Refreshed by the experience, we headed out to dinner, walking the approximately 30 blocks downtown to a rooftop restaurant I had discovered online. Once there, we realized we would be ordering our

Three restaurants, two hours and 7.75 miles later … we wound up about 30 blocks north, right where we had started our journey. What’s that they say about the best-laid plans?

In the end, we had an enjoyable, albeit late, dinner, followed by a charming dessert at Serendipity, complete with pink painted walls and furniture straight out of Barbie’s dream house. Another one off the checklist. Another trip in the books.

In light of last week’s tragic events on those very same city streets my friend and I had traversed only days before - the streets which welcome New Yorkers and visitors from all walks of life daily - it seems timely to appreciate this great city anew. For some, it is home; for others, a home away from home from Long Island to Pakistan, and everywhere in between.

Shaping Initials helping to improve upon communication skills through hands-on learning activities. Students began production with the study of letter design and then practiced measuring curved lines as they turned their designs into reality.

As production continued, students learned to cut and bend metal to mirror the

designs that they sketched.

Following cutting and shaping, students practiced self-shielded flux core welding to join each initial.

Concluding the process, students applied finishing techniques such as grinding and finally painted their initials to complete their projects.

Marching Band Triumphs

The Connetquot High School Marching Band once again showcased their triumphant talents at the 2017 Newsday Marching Band Festival amongst some of Long Island’s most talented student-musicians from both Nassau and Suffolk counties.

In celebration of the Connetquot High School Music Department’s upcoming trip to Walt

Disney World this February, the band performed pieces in keeping with the theme of Disney Hollywood studio’s “Fantasmic.”

Community Wellness Day Due to the vast efforts of Director of Pupil Personnel Services Gail Santo and the Community Wellness Day Committee, the Connetquot Central School District recently participated in the first Community Wellness Day in an effort to promote mindfulness practices and healthy lifestyle choices.

Throughout the hallways of Connetquot High

School, classrooms were transformed into yoga and meditation studios, and multiple vendors were set up spanning the gymnasium as well, including representatives from HeartBeet Farms, LA Fitness and the Tobacco Action Center. All participating vendors were in attendance with the goal in mind of promoting services to benefit the

health of the Connetquot community.

Additionally, detailed presentations were offered

by Dr. Hillel Trope, MD, Dana Debono, PA, and Michael Sredniawski, DC, in an effort to offer attendees vital information regarding the maintenance of a well-rounded, healthy lifestyle and best practices to remove toxins from the body.

Growing Pumpkins Hiawatha Elementary School kindergarten students in the Sachem Central School District were greeted by a great surprise as they participated in a fallthemed activity focused on identifying unique properties of pumpkins.

The students recited a poem and sprinkled a field outside the school with special pumpkin glitter in hopes the “Great Pumpkin”

from the infamous Charlie Brown story would bring pumpkins overnight. The next day students were pleasantly surprised when a pumpkin patch blanketed the field where they had spread the glitter the day before.

Kindergarten students in Mrs. Cerullo’s class began conducting several experiments – including observations of their pumpkins, describing their

unique characteristics and measuring the pumpkins’ height and width with cubes. Continuing their observations, students placed their pumpkins into tubs of water, discovering their buoyancy.

Following the activity, students were given the opportunity to take home their pumpkins to continue the fall-themed fun.

STUDENTS OF THE MONTH - On October 26th, Councilman Neil Foley visited Patchogue-Medford High School to honor the Students of the Month for September.

Pictured with Councilman Foley are John Bullard and Shannon McCarthy. The Councilman presents the award each month in recognition of the students’ academic achievements and their contributions to the Patchogue-Medford community.

The leaves are falling and autumn has arrived and that means its pumpkin time!

On Wednesday, October 25th there were pumpkins galore at the Connetquot Public Library! Children from preschool to 9th grade had the opportunity

to decorate pumpkins, with two sessions for preschoolers and a late afternoon one for those of school age.

Preschoolers decorated their pumpkins with markers, stickers, feathers and other assorted embellishments creating

masterpieces to take home and enjoy.

School age children had the opportunity to decorate their pumpkins as well as paint them. Celebrating the colorful creations of the season with family, friends and fun!

On October 11th, sponsors of the 9th annual Play for Peace/Jugando Por La Paz Soccer Tournament visited Long Island Head Start in Patchogue Village to present Center Manager Lina Ortiz with a check in the amount of $1,000.

The money comes from funds donated to the tournament from sponsors, including Gershow Recycling, Bridgehampton National Bank, TriTec Real Estate and Suffolk Transportation Service, Inc. Play for Peace brings together diverse nationalities within the community for a full day

of World Cup-style soccer, with a goal of promoting sports as a way for people from various backgrounds to find common ground.

The tournament was first organized in 2009 through the office of thenLegislator Jack Eddington in conjunction with the Patchogue-Medford Youth Soccer League.

After Legislator Robert Calarco was elected in 2011, he carried on the tradition.

Monies raised from the event are donated to local organizations, like Long Island Head Start, which provides a creative curriculum to Patchogue students ages three to

The Tri-M Music Honor Society highlights studentmusicians of outstanding academic accomplishment, with a focus on community and school service. The candidates are selected based on robust music participation, at least a

Safe Halloween

More than 450 costumed students and smiling parents walked the halls of Connetquot High School during the annual Safe Halloween Spectacular, an event sponsored by the CHS Student Government in an effort to ensure a fun and safe environment for the children of the community this Halloween season.

More than 140 high school students and teachers volunteered to take part in this year’s Safe Halloween.

Forty classrooms were designated for “trick-ortreating,” as the cafeteria provided music, fun and

games for the younger students. Each group of students selected their own theme and together decorated their assigned area of the first floor of Connetquot High School.

For admission to the program, attendees submitted a $5 donation, which by the end of the night totaled $1,000.

The funds will go toward the supplementation of future activities for student government as well as support students in need. Additionally, the community members donated nonperishable canned food items which were in turn distributed

to the Bohemia Historical Society, Long Island Cares and the Connetquot High School Food Drive.

“We collected over 15 boxes of food, which is an awesome kick starter to our annual food drive,” said Connetquot High School Student Government adviser Jennifer Piscitelli.

“Last year, we collected over 3,000 pounds of food throughout the food drive that supplemented 2,295 meals for local families in need. This event is such a success because of the wonderful student volunteers who love to work with the children of the community.”

Learning Comes Alive Students at Sachem High School East take learning out of the classroom as they apply mathematics concepts while collectively constructing a small ranch-style structure from the ground up, as part of a Career Training Program Carpentry class taught by James Byrne.

As part of the yearlong program, students work right outside of their classroom to raise a residential-type structure on the grounds of High School East.

Students deploy multiple construction skills learned within the classroom to

aide in the challenging building project. With the help of schematics, students turn designs into something tangible.

Beginning with framing, sheathing and laying the initial floor, students raised the walls for the 16x24 foot L-shaped ranch. Next, they carefully measured rough openings where they will eventually hang doors and place windows.

While working to complete the structure, students will be challenged further with angles and measures as they raise the rafters to begin the roof.

Continuing to improve

their craftsmanship, they will lay shingles to complete the roof and also work on their trim abilities as they add full siding to the building.

As the construction project continues, students will also incorporate various other trade skills to make the structure replicate a fully functioning home on the interior as well. The house will be equipped with running water, working electricity, and simple cabinetry features, all completed by the student craftsmen.
