Halliday-Duffy passed away on August 31, 2007. She was only 28. Mrs. HallidayDuffy taught at Lincoln Avenue Elementary School and lived every day to the fullest. Known for her love of life and interest in nature, Mrs. Duffy touched the hearts and minds of her students, both when she taught kindergarten and later third grade.

Colleagues and students fondly recalled how Mrs. Duffy conveyed her joy for living and love of life through her lessons as well as by example. Students remembered being amazed by her yoga postures—

including headstands— which she incorporated into the classroom as a healthy way to begin each morning. She never complained. She truly believed every day was a gift.

To keep Mrs. Duffy’s philosophy and spirit alive in the hearts of students who did not know her, a foundation and scholarship has been established in her name, and the Sunflower has become her symbol.

Each year this scholarship has been awarded to a deserving Fifth-grader who embodies her same attributes.

Halloween Window-Painting Tradition In Downtown Sayville Lives On

Story by Linda Mittiga Halloween phantasms have appeared once again to the delight of those who visit Downtown Sayville.

The undying tradition, sponsored every year by The Kiwanis Club, had invited Sayville Art students to create Halloween-themed Window Painting on storefront windows. To keep the tradition alive during this challenging year, COVID-19 socialdistancing concerns had to be considered to make the annual event happen.

“We did have to make changes to help keep our students safe this year,” explained Sayville Art Department chairperson Deb Urso. “At the High School, we were able to run it as a club activity through Art Club and National Art Honor Society. Students were excited to be able to continue this tradition.

They were honored to be able to help our community using their

artistic talents.”

Every year, the imaginative display entices visitors to view the thrilling designs up-close.

It encourages foot traffic throughout the town that boosts Sayville’s amazing local businesses. “Some changes this year,” Urso continued, “were that we did it over two days in small cohorts. At each store we only painted one window.

We also prepackaged all supplies and pre-poured all the paint into individual cups. All students needed to wear masks. We handed out gloves, had plenty of sanitizer, and everyone had to walk to town in small groups. We also made sure to space out the windows so students were more than six-feet apart from other groups painting windows.”

These changes, however, did affect who could participate in the annual activity.

“Unfortunately we didn’t have the Middle

School kids go,” Urso added. This was in part due to the Middle School’s distance from downtown.

“We cannot walk from there, and we need to be sure the kids were socially distant.” However, the Middle School art teacher Alex Schweitzer has organized internal Halloween Window painting so these students will not miss out on this great tradition.

Urso praised The Kiwanis club for their enormous assistance in “ordering supplies and calling the stores, letting them know we would be in town. They were so excited we were able to do it and so were we! There have been so many things we lost due to COVID-19.

Thank goodness, with some modifications and adjustments, we were able to do this wonderful event for our students and community.”

Canine Companions for Independence Enhances Many Lives Long Island Veterans Day Event Supports Service Men and Women For Wallis, a pup named Mork certainly is her best friend. They are inseparable.

Mork is Wallis’ service dog, helping Wallis help herself.

Mork retrieves the phone and other dropped items, pulls the wheelchair and opens doors.

Mork is just one of hundreds of service dogs that have been placed with children, adults and veterans with disabilities across the country through Canine Companions for Independence. The largest nonprofit provider of assistance dogs, Canine Companions is recognized worldwide for the excellence of its dogs.

It has facilitated matches since 1975, enhancing the lives of people with disabilities by providing expertly-trained assistance dogs and ongoing support without charge to ensure quality and longevity of the matches it makes between dogs and people.

“The service dogs create new opportunities and new possibilities for people that lead to increased independence

and confidence,” said Debra Dougherty, executive director of Canine Companions. She is located at the organization’s northeast region training center, the Miller Family Campus at 286 Middle Island Road in Medford (631-561-0200). _______ Local companions -Brad Johnson and Barney of Bayport: “When Brad met Barney, I saw the life come back into his eyes,” said mother Brenda Johnson.

Air Force veteran and retired Port Authority police officer Ken Hernandez and Miller of Westbury: “Miller is amazing. He provides me with the independence I’ve longed for.”

Captain Victor Prato of East Marion will be honored at the ceremony along with his service dog Barbossa.

Severely wounded in Afghanistan during 2017 when his vehicle was targeted by a suicide bomber, Captain Prato was presented with the Purple Heart by President Donald Trump at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

“I knew that a perfect fit for me would be to get a dog that could be my companion and be with me as I navigate the world now,” said Captain Prato.

“Barbossa is my rock.”

Captain Prato was wounded when he served under 4-Star General John “Mick” Nicholson, the recipient of Canine Companions’ 2020 Outstanding Service Award. At the time, General

Nicholson was commander of Resolute Support and U.S. Forces-Afghanistan.

Presently, he is president of the PenFed Foundation that empowers military service members, veterans and their communities with the skills and resources to realize financial stability and opportunity.

As Captain Prato was training to receive his service dog, he and General Nicholson enjoyed an unexpected reunion.

The general is a Canine Companions volunteer puppy raiser. He now is raising WestPoint, a future veteran companion.

“As we draw closer to Veterans Day and celebrate the service that America’s men and women have dedicated to the country,” concluded Dougherty, “this also is a time to champion the companions that assist the veterans who have returned with combat injuries and need a little extra support in their lives.”

Adults with disabilities, including wounded veterans and veterans with disabilities, are partnered with trained service or hearing dogs. The assistance dogs, with adult support, also perform physical tasks for children with a range of disabilities. Canine Companions’ service dogs are expertly trained and also are partnered with working professionals in a health care, visitation, criminal justice or education setting.

The organization is supported by many people across Long Island and throughout the region, including Colonel E. David Woycik, Jr. (Ret.) United States Army. Woycik was raised in Huntington and resides in Garden City. He is a senior trial partner concentrating on personal injury, construction, highway design and toxic torts at Sanders, Sanders Block, Woycik, Viener & Grossman, P.C., of Mineola.

Woycik joined the board of directors of Canine Companion’s northeast region during 2010. Since then, he has actively supported the organization in deeds, financially and with fundraising. Most recently, a double figure donation was presented to Canine Companions in his honor by friend and fellow Hofstra University alumni James C. Metzger, owner of the Whitmore Agency of Garden City that provides insurance and estate planning. Metzger is wellknown across Long Island for his business services along with extensive support of athletic, education and other community programs.

helped Canine Companions organize an annual Veteran’s Day event -“Saluting Independence” -that recognizes service men and women from World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm and the War Against Terrorism. Since 2011, Canine Companions’ Veterans Day salute has raised more than $500,000 to support the puppies/dogs programs for deserving veterans.

“The program began as an awareness event with the dedication of a dorm room that David named in honor of veterans,” added Dougherty. “A year later, the Outstanding Service Award, named for Woycik and Lance Corporal Matias Ferriera, was created to annually honor one person or corporation for outstanding service in military service and/ or volunteering to assist veterans.”

Colonel Woycik served overseas in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait for Operation Desert Storm and recently for Operation Enduring Freedom in the War Against Terrorism. He is a well-decorated soldier and has been awarded the Distinguished Service Medal, Bronze Star and the Meritorious Service Ribbon. Lance Corporal and Machine Gunner Ferriera was injured by an improvised explosive device (IED) blast in the Helmand Province of Afghanistan during 2011. He sustained bilateral below the knee amputations and a pelvic fracture. Today, Ferreira is a Suffolk County police officer.

Additional emphasis has been placed on fundraising this year to support expansion of the program for veterans to include men and women with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Rolling Reads This school year, librarians throughout Connetquot Central School District are on a roll — thanks to book carts on wheels. Instead of heading down to the library themselves, students now have the library come to them. Each student can check out a book from the cart and then participate in a library lesson and some independent reading time.

District librarians have used this new spin on library education as another way to get their

students excited about reading. At Idle Hour Elementary School, if one hears a honking horn, they will know that library media specialist Julia DeMaio is making a stop with her “book bus.” Decorated to look like a yellow school bus and accompanied by recorded sound effects, the “book bus” is sure to spread cheer. At Helen B. Duffield Elementary School, DeMaio uses a traveling “book barn,” covered in faux barnwood and adorned with pictures

of animals from various children’s books. At both schools, DeMaio plays the “Price Is Right” theme song during her visits, encouraging each student to do a little dance as they “come on up” to the cart to check out a book of their choice. According to DeMaio, the goal is “to make an unconventional year as normal and fun as possible while fostering a love for books and reading.”

PTA Hosts Zoom BINGO For Family Connect Night Story by Linda Mittiga Last year, Sayville School District launched Family Connect Night as an opportunity for families to make some room in their busy weekday schedules to participate in enjoyable activities together, playing games, prepping and enjoying meals together, watching movies or going on strolls. It was a concept implemented by Director of Student Services Jillian

Makris to address the social and emotional wellness of students and their families in a hectic world. “We would love to share what our families are doing around the community,” Mrs. Makris had added, suggesting families share the photos of activities for posting on the District’s website.

With the new stressors of COVID-19 shaking our world, this opportunity

to share quality, stressrelieving time together is even more important.

Recently, at Lincoln Avenue elementary school, the PTA sponsored Zoom BINGO for the first Family Connect night of this new school year. “Prizes were delivered to students homes by our PTA board,” said Lincoln Principal Christine Carlson. “There were over thirty families that participated!”

Outdoor Education And Recreation This fall season, educators throughout Connetquot Central School District have been finding unique ways to incorporate outdoor activities into their students’ daily schedules.

Physical education classes

are being held on the athletic fields and recess on the playgrounds, providing students with ample space to exercise and play in the fresh air.

Classroom teachers and specialists alike are also

The community is invited to safely donate nonperishable food and essential items to support neighbors facing financial issues and food insecurity.

Lisa’s mother was a special education teacher and her father worked for a book publishing company. She was greatly influenced by both of their professions.

She grew up knowing she loved horses, but really wanted to become a teacher and work with children in need. Her father would often send her books while she was away at college, and one day she received a book titled Palomino, by Danielle Steel. As she read through the pages, she became inspired by what was written: a ranch that was formed to help people through equine therapy. From that point on, she was certain that was exactly what she wanted to do with her life. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa Gatti opened Pal-O-Mine Equestrian in 1995 as a 501C(3) organization.

Pal-O-Mine is located at 829 Old Nichols Road in Islandia. They grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week, and they continue to grow today! This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with state-of-theart footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. They help an unbelievable amount of people and their work is truly heartwarming.

Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome,

Additionally, this organization is proud to now offer a Frontline Heroes Wellness Program. This program is complimentary for medical professionals and first responders, and can be virtual or in person.

The well-known benefits of being in nature include reduced stress while providing a sense of calm, connection and solace.

Sessions for this program may include reiki, mindfulness and horsemanship.

Similar to many other organizations, volunteers are the backbone of Pal-OMine. Please note, all students, volunteers and staff must complete, sign and submit a Health Screening Questionnaire prior to coming to Pal-O-Mine.

Infectious diseases can strike at any time. Some of them cause relatively minor interruptions to daily life and often can resolve of their own accord when the body’s immune system mounts a successful defense.

Other diseases can cause serious, even lifethreatening symptoms or spread rapidly, which makes it essential for medical professionals to help slow down or stop the transmission.

What Is Herd Immunity?

Herd immunity is a term that often arises in relation to infectious diseases. Herd immunity has taken on renewed significance as the world has been battling COVID-19, the novel coronavirus introduced in late 2019. Herd immunity, which is sometimes called “community immunity,” “population immunity” or “social immunity,” refers to the indirect protection from infectious diseases that occurs when a large percentage of the population has become immune to that disease.

If enough people are resistant to the cause of a disease, whether it is a bacteria or virus, that disease has nowhere to go and the spread stalls, according to WebMD.
