Science research students at Harborfields High School participated in the first phase of the Spark Challenge at Northwell Health.

The students traveled to Northwell Health headquarters in Lake Success and met with a team of medical professionals who deal with addiction intervention.

This team of professionals, led by Dr. Sandeep Kapoor,

has revolutionized the treatment of addiction as a disease rather than a stigmatized choice.

They learned about various professions involved including, pediatric emergency medicine, health coach, project manager, social worker, senior research analyst and social media and public relations specialist. They met with all of these professionals,

as well as some of the executives, at Northwell Health before breaking into groups to made Public Service Announcement videos, showing what they learned.

During phase two of the challenge, students will create posters about the varying professions and present them at a symposium in April.

Every November, volunteer designers and garden clubs add to the charm and magic of the former summer home of Rosamond and William K. Vanderbilt II. The Eagle’s Nest estate and its grand 24-room, Spanish Revival mansion, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, are home to the Suffolk County

Vanderbilt Museum.

Visitors can see the captivating results through December 30. Guides take guests on tours of the Mansion on Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday (and Thursday-Monday, December 26-30 during school vacation) at regular intervals between 11:15 am and 4:00 pm.

Tickets are available at the door. Admission: adults $14, seniors (62 plus) and students with ID $13, children age 12 and under $11.

Lance Reinheimer, executive director of the Vanderbilt Museum, said, “We’re grateful each year to these generous volunteers

who use their creative skills to bring enchanting holiday grandeur to the Mansion.”

Stephanie Gress, director of curatorial affairs, said, “The garden clubs and decorators have been with us for many years, and this year we welcomed two new designers. Ethan Allen of Huntington created the Enchanted Flight of the Cardinals installation for us in the Memorial Wing lobby, and Felicia Greenberg contributed her magnificent silk floral sculptures. Our visitors will be delighted with the 2019 holiday season décor.”

‘Tis the season of holiday parties and special events.

The festive atmosphere and free food and drinks can make it very tempting to forsake your healthy eating plan! Try these tips to celebrate the season without overdoing it.

• Keep portions in check.

Put less on your plate and pass on that second helping. Split appetizers, entrees and desserts with others. Use a smaller plate when possible so a small serving will look like more.

• Bring a dish. If the event is a potluck (or even if not), offer to contribute a lighter option. That way, you’ll have at least one healthy choice.

• Go easy. Avoid loading up on foods that are fried, buttered or have a lot of cheese or cream. Look for fruit, veggies and dip, whole grains and baked or grilled items.

• Be prepared. Have a healthy, high-protein, high-fiber meal or snack before you go to the event.

• Go slow if you drink alcohol. Drinking plenty of water between drinks will quench your thirst and fill you up so you’ll be less likely to overindulge.

• Treat yourself. Try bite-sized tastes or split portions of desserts, candy and other treats. Let yourself enjoy some of the indulgences of the season without overdoing it.

• Balance is the key.

For example, if dinner is going to be a feast, opt for a lighter lunch.

• Eat smart at holiday events. They often serve up extra helpings of less-thanhealthy foods. If you’re a guest, eat a healthy snack before you go. If you’re the host, challenge yourself to offer some delicious healthier options using our recipes and cooking tips.

While not everyone can venture to New York City’s famed Times Square to watch the ball drop in person, millions tune in around the world to watch it on television.

New Year’s celebrations can be traced back thousands of years to ancient Babylon. And as with many holidays with deep histories, traditions are the hallmark of many New Year’s celebrations. While many people perform these traditions by rote, it can be interesting to delve into the history behind various components of New Year’s celebrations.

Toasting the new year with a sparkling wine can be traced back to French champagne producers.

Champagne, a sparkling wine from a specific region of France, was used in the baptism of the Frankish warrior Clovis, according to the Champagne Committee of France. Soon, champagne became a key part of religious events, coronations and soirees - as well as secular rituals that replaced formerly religious rituals, according to the book “When Champagne Became French” by Kolleen Guy. Champagne manufacturers eventually linked the bubbly to festive occasions with family, and New Year’s celebrations became another ideal time to pop the cork on a bottle.

Heart-Healthy Tips For The Holiday Season The holidays are a time for celebrating with family and friends, but often stress inhibits our abilities to enjoy the holiday season. From shopping to cooking to events, we are often packing our schedules while forgetting about our health.

A report in the Journal of the American Heart Association noted that heart-related deaths spike during Christmas.

While more research is needed to pinpoint the exact reason, researchers suggest that emotional stress, changes in diet and alcohol consumption, less staff at medical facilities and changes in physical environment (i.e. visiting relatives), could play a role in the spike in deaths.

In order to protect your heart and enjoy more holidays with your loved ones, follow these tips to stay healthy and happy this season: Maintain healthy habits. Even though our schedules change during the holidays because of travel and events, it’s important to maintain regular healthy habits.

For instance, eating healthy, balanced meals, moving more every day, and getting at least seven hours of sleep each night.

Beware of party perils. Special holiday events could mean extra helpings of not-sohealthy meals. Try eating a healthy snack, such as a big salad or vegetable soup, before a party to avoid overindulging later. If you’re hosting or bringing a dish, offer healthier options using American Heart Association recipes and cooking tips found at recipes.heart.org.

Give yourself the gift

of peace. It’s okay to say no to invitations when you have too much going on. If you start to feel overwhelmed, recharge by doing something that relaxes you, such as yoga, meditation or going for a brisk walk.

Make a plan for the New Year.

When all the parties are over, the winter blues set in.

Instead of feeling down, challenge yourself with realistic, sustainable goals for a healthy, happy New Year! For example, start a walking routine and sign up for your local Heart Walk to stick to your goals.

While avoiding stress and making good choices can help prevent heart disease and stroke, the nation’s No. 1 and No. 5 killers, it’s still important to know what to do if you or a loved one experiences the signs and symptoms of heart attack, stroke or cardiac arrest. The Journal report noted that patients hold back in seeking medical care during the holiday season, which could also explain the spike in deaths.

If you or a loved one experiences the warning signs of heart attack, stroke or cardiac arrest, don’t delay, call 9-1-1 immediately.

Heart Attack Warning Signs: Discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or that goes away and comes back. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain.

Discomfort in other areas of the upper body, including pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach.

Shortness of breath,

with or without chest discomfort.

Other signs may include breaking out into a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness.

Call 9-1-1 immediately if experiencing any of these symptoms.

Stroke Warning Signs: Face Drooping. Does one side of the face droop or is it numb? Ask the person to smile.

Arm Weakness. Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?

Speech Difficulty. Is speech slurred, are they unable to speak, or are they hard to understand?

Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence, like “the sky is blue.” Is the sentence repeated correctly?

Time to Call 9-1-1. If the person shows any of these symptoms, even if the symptoms go away, call 9-1-1 and get them to the hospital immediately.

Cardiac Arrest Warning Signs: Sudden loss of responsiveness.

The person does not respond to tapping on shoulders.

No normal breathing.

The victim does not take a normal breath when you tilt the head up and check for at least five second.

Call 9-1-1 immediately and start hands-only CPR by pressing hard and fast in the center of the chest.

Holiday Appetizers Perfect For Entertaining

MINI MERRY MEATBALLS - “Mini Merry Meatballs,” courtesy of the Cattlemen’s Beef Board and National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, is sure to please. Paired with a cranberry barbecue sauce, these savory appetizers are bursting with flavor and holiday appeal.

Presents may get much of the glory during the holiday season, but there is much to be said about the foods found throughout this time of year as well.

During the holiday season, people frequently find that dinner invites, cocktail parties, office happy hour gatherings, and other opportunities for socialization are easy to come by. At the heart of these events are foods and beverages.

Whether one is hosting a holiday soiree or plans to bring something to a potluck party, it’s helpful to have a list of fail-proof recipes at the ready.

Tasting menus, bitesized treats and finger foods are always a hit at holiday functions - and this recipe for “Mini Merry Meatballs,” courtesy of the Cattlemen’s Beef Board and National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, is sure to please. Paired with a cranberry barbecue sauce, these savory appetizers are bursting with flavor and holiday appeal.

Mini Merry Meatballs (Serves 24)

1 /2 pound ground beef brisket 1 /4 pound ground beef ribeye steak boneless

1 /4 pound ground beef (80 percent lean)

Salt

Preheat oven to 400 F. 1 cup seasoned stuffing Combine brisket, ribeye, ground beef, stuffing mix mix, egg, water, garlic, salt, and pepper in a large 1 egg, beaten bowl, mixing lightly but thoroughly. Shape into 24 3 tablespoons water 11/2-inch meatballs. Place 1 teaspoon minced garlic on a rack in a broiler pan that has been sprayed with cooking spray. Bake for 13 1/4 teaspoon salt to 15 minutes until the internal temperature reads 1/8 teaspoon pepper 160 F.

Cranberry Barbecue Sauce: 2 teaspoons vegetable oil

1 /2 cup chopped white onion 1 tablespoon garlic 2 1/2 cups cranberries

minced fresh

1/2 cup orange juice 1/2 cup water 1/3 cup ketchup 1 /4 cup light brown sugar 2 tablespoons vinegar

cider

2 tablespoons molasses 1 /2 teaspoon ground red pepper

Meanwhile, prepare the Cranberry Barbecue Sauce. Heat oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add onions and garlic; cook and stir 2 to 3 minutes, or until tender, but not brown. Add remaining ingredients, stirring to combine. Bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes, or until cranberries burst and the mixture has been reduced to a thick consistency, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat; cool slightly. Transfer mixture to blender container. Cover, allowing steam to escape. Process until smooth. Season with salt, as desired.

Home Depot Donates Sensory Boards It started with a simple request, but what Washington Drive Primary School wound up receiving was more than expected. On Nov. 25, Home Depot paid a visit to Kelly Lewis’ classroom to hand deliver three sensory boards that they had constructed for the students.

Originally, Ms. Lewis had only requested that the Commack-based

supply store donate the materials and supplies needed to build the sensory boards, but she said, “Home Depot went above and beyond.”

Nine students burst with excitement as the store’s managers, Robin Pacheco and Taneka Braithwaite, fitted them with orange Home Depot aprons, which they wore with pride as they explored the sensory

boards, fitted with screws, doorknockers, wheels, calculators, and more.

The boards will be used daily in Ms. Lewis’ sensory area to help calm the students when they need a break from classroom activities.

Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent.

Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease.

Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease.

That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.
