Hills East Enjoys Another Successful Football Season Awards, Scholarship Presented As Coaches, Players, Families Celebrate

Coaches, players, parents and everyone associated with Thunderbirds football at Half Hollow Hills High School East in Dix Hills gathered on Sunday, December 4, at Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury for an awards luncheon and a celebration of another successful season.

Though the team ended its drive for a championship for the second consecutive year in the semi-finals of Suffolk County Division II, Head Coach Alex Marcelin and his staff indicated that the season added another building block for a program that continues to spread its wings. The team adjusted quickly to the departure of many seniors from the previous season. New leaders emerged from among the many players who filled slots on both sides of the ball to continue to move the program forward.

“It was a roller coaster year,” said Coach Marcelin, “but the team put it together to reach a lot of milestones. We are looking forward to considerable contributions next season from players moving up from our junior varsity, which also enjoyed a winning record.”

Then, the coach laughed as he announced to players and families that practice begins on Tuesday.

Elwood’s John Glenn Boys Golf Team Finds Success Despite Adversity

Demonstrating resilience in the face of adversity, Elwood-John H. Glenn High School’s boys varsity golf team golfers showed tremendous perseverance this year following the loss of their beloved coach Joe Pace, who died July 23 after a courageous battle against cancer.

Elwood’s team, who were league co-champions last season with Huntington, wrapped up an amazing season with an impressive run, finishing in second place behind Commack with a 7-3 record, the same record as last year. Guided by coach Charlie Rogener, five out of six John Glenn

golfers advanced to the Suffolk County individual tournament. As a team, they finished second in league play and advanced through two opponents – including No. 2 seed Bay Shore –in the countywide team tournament until eventually falling to county champions Comsewogue.

Northport High School Senior Nominated For Grammy Award

While some of the most accomplished and successful musicians of our time dream of being nominated for a Grammy Award, Northport High School senior Kaitlyn Ruiter has already checked that box on her resume. As a bassist in the 20202021 New York Youth Symphony, Kaitlyn was a member of the group which recorded the album “Works by Florence Price, Jessie Montgomery, Valerie Coleman” which is nominated for Best Orchestral Performance at the 2023 Grammy awards.

Traditionally, the New York Youth Symphony practices every weekend over several months for a final performance at Carnegie Hall. Due to the pandemic, students were not able to hold the performance and needed to be split into two groups of approximately 50 students each. Conductor Michael Repper decided that in lieu of the prestigious performance, the groups would instead record an album. That album has garnered the attention of the prestigious Recording Academy, leading to the nomination.

After rehearsing for three

to four hours nearly every Sunday for the 2020-2021 school year, the season concluded with Kaitlyn and her peers performing in a professional recording studio for many hours over several days to create the album. While the original plan was to digitally mix the two separate groups of performers, the conductor ultimately decided to have each group perform half the album. Kaitlyn was the bassist in the group which performed the songs “Ethiopia’s Shadow in America” and “Umoga.”

The album included four separate works from three African American female composers Florence Price, Valerie Coleman, and Jessie Montgomery and was released in April 2022. Other nominees in the same category include John Williams, conducting the Berlin Philharmonic and Gustavo Dudamel, conducting the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

Kaitlyn shared how the album was in consideration in four separate categories and she was shocked at the official news of the nomination. “When we first started recording, [conductor Michael Repper] said maybe

one day we would be nominated for a Grammy and the idea seemed so farfetched” she said. When Northport High School Director of Orchestras Michael Sussino gave Kaitlyn the news of the nomination, she felt honored. “I’m honestly just excited that we’re even nominated. We’re against John Williams and the Berlin Philharmonic, which is insane, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic with Dudamel. Even just being nominated and seen alongside these huge names is something I never thought I would experience,” she said.

Kaitlyn has been playing the bass since age nine and began her orchestra career at East Northport Middle School. She expressed gratitude for her teachers and the district music program for supporting her and is also an accomplished pianist in addition to bass player. She is currently enrolled in the Juilliard Pre-College Program and intends to major in string bass after graduation.

The Grammy’s are taking place Sunday, Feb. 5 at the Los Angeles crypto.com Arena.

Harborfields High School senior soccer player Nahrahel Louis was recently recognized as a School Winner in the 2023 Heisman High School Scholarship program, earning this designation for being a leader, for excelling in the classroom and on the field, and for his work in the community.

EAC Network is a non-profit organization that empowers, assists and cares for individuals in need. Their objective is to reach individuals within our community through innovative programs that improve quality of life. They have five service areas:

It’s the holiday season; a time to be jolly. A time particularly for children to be happy. On Wednesday, December 14th, EAC Network stepped up to support children in need on Long Island who otherwise would not have the possibility to celebrate this Holiday season like every child deserves to by hosting a Holiday Shopping Spree at Walmart in Farmingdale.

More than a hundred children and young adults, from 4 to 19 years old, were able to get a $100 gift card to spend on gifts of their choice. The event was organized in collaboration with Bethpage Federal Credit Union (BFCU) who donated $10,000 and Summit Health-CityMD, who donated $5,000.

Malik and Adrian, both 14 years old, were so grateful to be part of the shopping spree. With sparkles in their eyes as they explored the isles at Walmart and admired the different items on the shelves, their first stop was at the electronic game area, where they eagerly looked at different options available. The feeling of gratitude for the possibility to acquire a game or two, along with other items, was palpable.

Volunteers from Bethpage Federal Credit Union and Summit HealthCityMD spent the afternoon with each child to assist them as they purchased gifts.

After picking up a game, with excitement and humility Malik said, “I now have only one item in my cart, but I have what I was looking for and it feels good. It feels great.”

Sadly, the number of children in foster care is rising throughout the United States. These children are at a much higher risk of incarceration, teenage

pregnancy, substance abuse, lack of self-esteem and of ending up on public assistance. However, EAC Network’s Chance to Advance program works to bring meaningful change to the lives of at-risk children and youth in foster care by providing positive outlooks and enrichment opportunities through oneon-one mentoring as well as life skills workshops and activities, with the goal of assisting, caring and empowering children to take control of their lives.

If you are in need and believe you can benefit from any of EAC Network’s offerings, please contact Robert Stricoff, Chief Development Officer at EAC Network at Robert.Stricoff@eacnetwork.org or 631.433.1662. If

Northport High School Students Named Suffolk County Champions

Members of the Northport High School Law Program competed in the Long Island Moot Court Tournament sponsored by the United States District Court in Central Islip on Wednesday, November 30. After four rounds of rigorous competition over the course of two days, Northport High school students prevailed as the Suffolk County Champions after defeating Bayshore.

Students Sam RosenfeldMcMahon, Ava Mir, Kailey Ciszek, Molly Zambri, Caitlyn Murphy, Kaden Sposato, Sadie Callaghan and Ashley Granger represented Northport in this tournament. They continued on as Long Island finalists but were ultimately defeated by the Nassau County champions.

attorneys Mark Goidell, David Lazer and Megan Murphy along with Law Program Coordinator David Scott. Students enjoyed a challenging and rigorous competition, testing their advocacy skills and knowledge of constitutional law. Cases were argued before distinguishing panels of judges and volunteer

attorneys with significant experience in federal litigation and appeals.

“The feedback to our students was overwhelmingly positive,

complimenting them on their professionalism and preparation. We look forward to next year’s tournament and thank the students and attorney

volunteers who worked very hard to enjoy this tremendous success. This was a rewarding learning experience for all involved,” said David Scott.

First Central Savings Bank Opens Its Tenth Branch In Huntington

First Central Savings Bank (FCSB) opened its tenth branch in Huntington on Thursday, December 8th. FCSB is a community bank that strives to stand out with their emphasis on genuine hospitality that you might not find somewhere else. They are client focused and choose to know their customers in order to understand each individual need. They have a total of ten branches located in Glen Cove, Whitestone, Astoria, Ridgewood, Bayside, Flushing, Ditmars, Forest Hills, Lynbrook and now Huntington.

What makes FCSB stand out amongst their competitors is their devotion to customer service. Joseph Pistilli, founder and chairman of FCSB said, “We are very different in our banking model and what we expect to give to Huntington is what other towns and big cities are lacking today. It’s the one-on-one customer service, being able to understand what people’s needs are, and doing business the old-fashioned way. There are still some old-fashioned things that work well today and that includes the face-to-face

contact and that is what is lacking in banking today. However, we do offer online banking options as well. First Central Savings Bank is warm and welcoming. It gives the feeling like you’re at home.” The architecture and interior design of the space at the Huntington branch was done so intentionally. Their seating area in the main space offers a sense of comfortability and a warmness that not many banks offer today. FCSB wants their customers to feel welcomed when they enter and choose to bank with them.

During the ribbon cutting ceremony, Michael Serao, Chief Administrative Officer spoke on what First Central Savings Bank can bring to Huntington as well as its customers, “The heart of our business is digital banking meets personal service.”

He was later followed by Joseph Pistilli who addressed the difference between FCSB and other banks, which included the loss of a personal touch.

Pistilli also addressed the elected officials and community leaders that were in attendance stating, “You have my own personal guarantee. We won’t let your community down

and that’s one thing that we’ll stand behind– it’s our word to the community and the leadership that’s here tonight.” The leadership team at FCSB then joined behind Joseph Pistilli as he cut the ribbon, officially marking the opening of First Central Savings Bank in Huntington.

The team at FCSB makes it their point to give back to the community, which they did after the ceremony. Five community groups were in attendance and they were each given a donation for their community efforts.

The groups included Huntington YMCA, Little Shelter Animal Rescue, Huntington Community First Aid Squad, Huntington Fire Department and Huntington Senior Center. They were greeted by Joseph Pistilli along with others on the FCSB leadership team.

In celebration of their opening, they also had a hot cocoa station, passed hors d’oeuvres, Christmas carolers singing outside and even an appearance from Santa. First Central Savings Bank made its opening debut in Huntington this December with true holiday spirit. Welcome to Huntington, First Central Savings Bank!

Local Artist Finds New Success

Kristen Hadjoglou, a local artist from Eastport, New York, truly offers something different to the marketplace. Her signature personalized hand-made coloring books are what really launched her career as an artist, but she has expanded to offer various other products as well.

“I was born an artist,” said Kristen. “I always knew that growing up. I attended Rhode Island School of Design, where I earned a Bachelors of Fine Art in Painting. From there, I worked in multiple industries where I was able to express myself creatively. Life surprisingly led me into obtaining a career as a Financial Advisor, which has been very fulfilling since helping others is something I’ve always been passionate about.” However, Hadjoglou never lost her passion for the arts.

As a long-time Eastport resident, she grew attached to many of the local businesses and what made the town so unique. “One day I drew a few pictures on a couple of pages as a gift for our local general store, and it quickly turned into an entire hand-drawn coloring book, which spotlighted the main destinations in the town. What started as a fun project

I worked on in my downtime turned into something that ended up being sold in local businesses and even on Amazon. People love to open up a physical book and see visuals that bring back special memories, and I love being a part of that.”

Since then, Kristen started her own company, Underdog Nation, where she sells her coloring books, stickers, clothing items, journals, puzzles and other fun gifts (such as crayons in the shape of people and stars)! With recent success, she is starting to focus more and more on her career as an artist. The best part is that Kristen can make something for any age group to enjoy.

“I recently finished a project with the Greater Patchogue Chamber of Commerce, which was a custom coloring book that’s filled with drawings of local businesses. It brought the Chamber Members together in a special way and is being sold around

Patchogue.” Another special project Kristen recently produced is a personalized coloring book that was used by a local fireman’s foundation for fundraising efforts.

“If you dream it, I can probably find a way to make something fun with it,” said Kristen.

“Whether it’s a single page or a full book, everything I draw is by hand in my personal style and reflects how much I care about the project. I’ve been inspired by all things local and historic, and it’s been fun to find a new way to teach kids in our community about local history. Some other projects I’ve worked on came from my love of my Gen X childhood, whether that be vintage toys, movie quotes, thrift shopping or collecting. Each project differs, but I absolutely love what I do, and that means I usually get things done pretty fast! I’m living that dream phrase, ‘If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.’ Looks like I’m almost there.”

If you, your business, Chamber of Commerce, town or the like are interested in more information, please contact Kristen today at 631.245.8090 or kkhudn@ gmail.com.

LIPA Announces New Community College Scholarship

Officials from the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) joined with representatives from Nassau Community College and Suffolk County Community College to announce a new community college scholarship program.

The LIPA Scholarship is designed to provide education and training for students from households with incomes below the median income of Long Island and the Rockaways (approximately $100,000 for a family of four) living in historically underserved communities.

The LIPA Scholarship is a $350,000 commitment over the next five years to provide 50 full scholarships for students to attend either Nassau Community College or Suffolk County Community College to obtain an associate degree or certificate that will help them pursue a career in the electric utility or clean energy sectors.

This investment is an effort to ensure that our workforce represents all the communities LIPA serves and that all of our customers can participate in the growing career opportunities available in the electric utility and clean energy industry.

Thomas Falcone, Chief Executive Officer of LIPA, said: “Electricity is the clean fuel of the future. Studies predict electricity will provide more than 70 percent of New York’s energy needs by 2050 and that it will be entirely carbon-free. With this growing industry, LIPA’s commitment to fund 50 scholarships at Nassau and Suffolk Community College over the next five years will ensure that our workforce represents all the communities LIPA serves and that all our customers can participate in the fabulous and growing career opportunities available in the electric sector.”

Dr. Maria Conzatti,

Interim President of Nassau Community College, said: “Together with LIPA, Nassau Community College is pleased to meet the workforce development needs of our business partners and the educational aspirations of the Long Island community.”

Dr. Edward T. Bonahue, President of Suffolk County Community College, said: “The Long Island Power Authority’s generous scholarships will help us recruit and sustain students entering the STEM fields, transforming our workforce and our region’s economy. With this support, LIPA joins the college in bridging our promising students from financial need to the high-need, high-wage disciplines that lead to a rewarding career.”

The curricula offered at Nassau Community College and Suffolk County Community College include courses relevant to the work LIPA does to meet the clean energy goals set by New York’s Climate Act, as well as to fulfill LIPA’s mission of providing clean, reliable, and affordable energy to Long Island and the Rockaways.

The LIPA Scholarship will support income-qualified, graduating high school seniors, allowing them to extend their educational development and enter the utility and clean energy sectors. Participation in the LIPA Scholarship will provide graduates with a competitive edge in applying for employment at LIPA and its contractor, PSEG Long Island, who plan to hire hundreds of entry-level workers over the next five years.

This five-year program will provide annual funding for ten full-time, two-year scholarships for low- to moderateincome students who reside in disadvantaged communities, as identified by New York’s Climate Justice Working Group,

planning to attend Nassau Community College or Suffolk County Community College. Residents of the following communities served by LIPA are eligible for the LIPA Scholarship:

Nassau County

· Westbury Village, New Cassel, Elmont, Hempstead Village, Uniondale, East Meadow, Valley Stream Village, South Valley Stream, Inwood, Oceanside, Roosevelt, Long Beach City, Glen Cove City, and East Massapequa.

Queens County

· The Rockaways.

Awardees of LIPA’s Scholarship will have the opportunity to:

· Obtain a scholarship toward an associate degree or certificate program at either Nassau Community College or Suffolk County Community College.

· Attend LIPA Workforce Seminars with utility executives and subject matter experts.

· Receive job placement support for available positions at LIPA, PSEG Long Island, and other LIPA contractors and suppliers.

The first recipients of the scholarship are expected to be announced in 2023. To learn more about the program, please visit www. lipower.org.

The announcement was held on November 8, 2022 at the Jones Beach Energy and Nature Center in Wantagh, an educational facility that LIPA maintains in partnership with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.

Melville Jewish Center Rabbi Orrin Krublit Joins Legislator Donnelly And Colleagues To Open General Meeting

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) welcomed Rabbi Orrin Krublit of the Melville Jewish Center to give the opening invocation before the November 22 general meeting of the Legislature in Hauppauge. In his inspiring nondenominational prayer, Rabbi Krublit provided words of hope, togetherness and understanding to tie in with the Thanksgiving holiday.

The spiritual leader of

the Melville Jewish Center in the Town of Huntington, Rabbi Krublit received his B.A. from the University of Florida and attended the Jewish Theological Seminary in Manhattan, where he received a M. A. in Jewish Education and Rabbinic Ordination. He came to New York from Orlando, where he served as the Rabbi at the Southwest Orlando Jewish Congregation until earlier this year. Rabbi Krublit and his wife Meira, a Long

Island native, and their toddler son Asher, reside in Melville.

“With a meaningful prayer offering compassion and inclusiveness, Rabbi Krublit demonstrated the true spirit of Thanksgiving,” said Legislator Donnelly. “His message of peace and cooperation transcended all religions and beliefs, and I thank him for sharing his insight with the Legislature.”

Christmas Eve is viewed differently by different people, even those who live under the same Santa-ready roof. Adults may see Christmas Eve as crunch time when they must prepare food for the next day or set up presents for their children to open in the morning. Children, on the other hand, are focused on Santa’s visit and little else.

Parents naturally want to make Christmastime as special as possible for their children, and that may involve ensuring that Christmas Eve is just as memorable as Christmas Day. The following are some ways to impart more magic on Christmas Eve celebrations.

Attend Mass At Midnight Practicing Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ at Christmas.

On Christmas Eve, churches often hold celebrations that may include late-evening or midnight masses that celebrate the birth of Christ when the calendar switches over to December 25. While it does make for a late night, it can be thoughtprovoking for kids and a unique experience, unlike any other.

Bake Fresh Cookies

Children like to leave out a plate of cookies and a glass of milk for Santa. That makes Christmas Eve a perfect time to whip up a fresh batch of cookies. Explore different recipes to come up with a unique offering each year.

Read a Christmas story

Watching television or looking at a tablet or mobile phone before bed can be too stimulating when it’s time for children to wind down for bed. Choose a holiday tale or tales that can be read as a Christmas Eve bedtime story. Reciting the poem “A Visit from St. Nicholas (‘Twas the Night Before Christmas)” is a great way to set the Christmas Eve mood.

Make A Batch Of ‘Reindeer Dust’

Why should Santa’s reindeer be left out when it comes to receiving treats? Reindeer dust, made from a combination of oatmeal, rice cereal, dried fruits, and glitter (if desired), is purported to attract Santa’s reindeer and provide them a nibble at the same time. Plus, it’s generally safe for other animals in the yard to eat.

Go Caroling

Caroling may not be the norm, but some families may want to revive it. Close-knit communities can organize family-centric caroling opportunities and roam the cul-de-sacs and other pedestrian-friendly areas singing popular songs.

Christmas Eve is a great time to embrace various traditions that help to make the season even more special.

How To Make Christmas Eve Special For Kids

Little Girls Need Clothing

Ethical Friends of Children, a free shop for Long Island children in need, is requesting donations of girls’ clothing, sizes 2 to 5.

This outreach program, run and supported by the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island in Garden City, assists more than 2500 children and their families each year by providing them with clothing, backpacks for school and infant furniture. The service is set up like a store so people can select what they want from a wide variety of clothes. “As we’ve set up our winter store, we are finding a gap in our supply of clothing for little girls,” says Ethical Friends of Children Director Jim LoPresti of Massapequa Park.

Ethical Friends of Children, established in 1985, is staffed entirely by volunteers and there is no charge for any services. Individuals, families, or community groups donate gently used clothing and other things children may require, such as backpacks. Any cash donations go entirely towards purchase of needed items for children, such as diapers and formula.

“Customers” are referred by many of the area’s social service organizations and are supported by both religiously affiliated and private agencies funded by Nassau and Suffolk Counties
