Recognized for Excellence At the Elwood Union Free School District’s December Board of Education meeting, both students and staff were recognized for exemplary achievements. Elwood-John H. Glenn High School senior Brendan Harrigan was named a Commended Student in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship program this fall, and was applauded for his academic success. “It takes a lot of dedication and attention to your studies to be ranked among the top three percent of students across the country!” said high school Principal Carisa Burzynski. Third-grade James H. Boyd Intermediate School teacher Elizabeth Held was honored for being a New York State Teacher of the Year finalist, and for all her efforts in bringing grant monies into the district. Ms. Held’s most recent endeavor helped bring about the James H. Boyd makerspace. Mr. Wayne Barrett, a custodian at James H. Boyd Intermediate School, was honored for going above and beyond with all of his duties, and the dedication he puts into his work for the school. In addition, the Elwood-JohnH. Glenn varsity volleyball team was recognized for their Suffolk County Long Island Champion title, their sportsmanship and athletic excellence.

Partnering to Plant Individuals from AHRC Suffolk’s Day Habilitation programs and the Suffolk County Parks Department formed a unique partnership to help breathe life back into the Meadowedge Greenhouse Cooperative located on the West Sayville Golf Course. On December 12th, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and Suffolk County Legislator Kara Hahn paid a visit to the facility and the individuals working there. The greenhouse is open to the public Monday – Friday 10:30am – 1:30pm for all your holiday plant needs. All the proceeds from plant sales help support this program. Last on the List Just five days until Christmas, and I suppose I should begin my shopping soon. It’s funny, with the sole exception of Black Friday when I purchased precisely one gift - I haven’t done so much as compile a list in the days that have elapsed. Perhaps it’s because, save for the usual collection of gift cards and standard annual favorites, there is rarely an occasion when anyone can offer a suggestion of what they would like. Not that I am much better when it comes to this. Most years, a gift card is just as good as any particular object I can come up with, or maybe tickets to an upcoming concert or ballgame. Of course, there are always my two standbys - a trip to Disney World to “meet Mickey,” and a puppy. Yes, the 3 year-old child in me hasn’t quite grown
up yet. Alas, my apartment doesn’t allow for a furry fourlegged friend; besides, my little baby betta Spud would be jealous. They say people have become increasingly thoughtless in the age of technology, opting to do most of their shopping online and “mail it in” when it comes to selecting the perfect present. I, for one, still prefer to personally browse the stores, even if I have a fairly good idea of what I want to buy. Nothing quite compares to that personal touch. So why have I barely begun this process with less than a week remaining ‘til Christmas? An excellent question, deflected by a focus on de-twinkling my flickering window lights, decorating my balcony just in time for the annual cleaning-of-thegutters to completely cover everything in a fine black

layer of dirt and ground-up leaves, and contemplating how to shove all things not Christmas-related into any available corner of the closet. Gift shopping, or even listmaking, not so much. And yet somehow, some way, everything manages to get done each year… even if, at times, it has included wrapping presents in the corner of my bedroom as company arrives on Christmas Eve. No need for ribbons and bows, as long as the box is (relatively) covered and the right person winds up with the appropriate package. In everything, it’s the thought that counts. With that, sending thoughts to all of our readers for a healthy, happy holiday season. Here’s hoping you all receive everything on your wish list.

HARMONY CAFÉ
Harmony Café is a non-profit with a mission to reduce food insecurity by serving healthy, yet affordable, meals to all who walk through their door. They’re a proud member of and are based off the established nonprofit restaurant business model developed by the One World Everyone Eats Foundation. When one enters Harmony Café, they will notice there’s a suggested donation of $10, but guests have the option to pay less, pay more to pay it forward, pay nothing, or opt to volunteer at the Café in exchange for a meal - the option of earning a meal without being plagued by the stigma of a handout. This café currently offers one 2 ½ hour event (a fresh meal and entertainment)
on the second Wednesday of each month. They operate out of the VFW Hall at 32 Edwards Street in Patchogue; but with a heart full of passion and the energy of a lion, founder and director Rosemarie McCarthy has a goal to open a storefront for the Café which will operate five days a week for lunch and dinner. Volunteers are needed in the following areas: event planning; volunteer coordinating; servers and kitchen help; community outreach and fundraising. Most importantly, volunteer board members are needed. Elwood Middle School kicked off their weeklong iteration of the Hour of Code on Monday, December 4th. The Hour of Code, which is a global movement, reaches millions of students in more than 180 countries, and one-hour coding tutorials are available in more than 45 languages. “We believe all children should be exposed to the world of coding and computer science,” said Principal Christina Sapienza. For this event, students gathered in the library and set up at different stations where they were able to tackle coding tasks based on genres, such as art, fashion, animation, video games, music and more. Students enjoyed the many different coding activities. Throughout the week students visited the library during their lunch hour and continued coding. The library made sure many beginner coding books were on hand for students to refer to. Students also participated in classroom coding activities. “We interact with results of coding every day, but I never really
thought about it until we had the opportunity to code,” said eighth-grader Trinity Hausch, “and now I’m definitely interested in learning more about it.”

Kindergartners at Ocean Avenue Elementary School spent the morning making holiday keepsakes with loved ones on December 6th. The dough students were provided with to create the keepsakes, made of nontoxic ingredients and a whole lot of cinnamon, filled the school with a delicious smell. Students enjoyed rolling out the
dough, cutting it into holiday shapes and getting a little messy with their family members. Once dried, these keepsakes could be used as holiday decorations, and are meant to last for years to come. “We do this every year so students can create something that will always remind them of their time at Ocean Avenue
Elementary,” said Principal Sabina Larkin, who started this tradition at the school In addition to the activity, the holiday boutique, organized by the PTA, was set up in the hallway. Classes were able to visit at scheduled times to purchase holiday gifts for family and friends.
Traversing the Islands The STEAM and Art Clubs at Oldfield Middle School in the Harborfields Central School District collaborated to hold an after-school expedition on December 6th. The purpose of this expedition was to demonstrate the ability of the robots each team in the STEAM club had built, while the art club decorated the environment the robots were to traverse. Many parents attended to watch the expedition. At the event, a long table was set up to represent a chain of islands, and each
island housed a team’s lighthouse, which was constructed out of Legos. Teams took turns moving their robots from one end of the table to the other using a joystick app on their phones. Using this app, students maneuvered their robot to get to the end of the table, used the robot’s claw to pick up “supplies,” and then return the supplies to their island’s lighthouse. “Don’t get discouraged if you don’t succeed the first time,” STEAM Club advisor Drew Lockwood told his

students, “trail and error is important - it’s all about the process.” All students who participated were extremely involved and impressively determined to have their robots complete the task. If the bots glitched, they were taken off the table and tinkered with until they were set to try again. In addition to demonstrating their robots, students presented the remote islands they had researched and chosen to house their structures.

The National Junior Honor Society at Oldfield Middle School in the Harborfields Central School District recently completed a schoolwide coat drive. Students throughout the school
were all encouraged to bring in at least one coat. After the drive ended, students met together on December 5th to sort the coats by size and gender, and filled up more than 18 black bags, which were
then delivered to Our Lady Queen of Martyrs church in Centerport to be distributed to those in need this winter season. The students were very proudto give back to the community.

Best in Character Harborfields’ boys junior varsity soccer team was recognized by Suffolk County Soccer Official’s Association for having the county’s best practices of character and sportsmanship on December 6th.

District Honor Roll Recently, it was announced that the Elwood Union Free School District was placed on College Board’s eighth annual District Honor Roll for Significant Gains in Student Access and Success. Only 447 school districts in the U.S. and Canada qualified for this honor. Since 2015, Elwood has significantly increased the number of students
participating in AP (Advanced Placement) classes, while also increasing the percentage of students earning AP Exam scores of 3 or higher — which made them eligible for this honor. Reaching these goals shows that Elwood is not only successfully identifying motivated, academically prepared students who are ready for AP, but is also dedicated to helping those
students to succeed. “It’s so inspiring to see the hard work of many individuals come together in a tangible way,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert, “both teachers and students alike were determined to succeed in the realm of AP, and it shows. The district is very proud to receive this honor.”
On December 8th, Google visited Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School in the Harborfields Central School District to pilot their new Expeditions Augmented Reality technology with the students. This new technology has the ability to map out classrooms, and then place
3-D objects throughout the room. While holding devices attached to selfie sticks, students are able to get up close to examine the details of the objects, such as a whale swimming through the ocean or moss on a tree in the rainforest. Students can also step back to look at the object in its entirety.
Fourth and fifth-graders traveled to places like the ocean floor, where they saw sunken ships up close, as well as fish and stingrays that swam around their feet. Students also traveled back in time to the era of Leonardo DiVinci and saw his inventions, such as a flying machine, up close.
