Boyd Intermediate School participated in several hands-on cranberry activities that incorporated Literacy, Writing, Science and Math concepts. DISNEY WORLD Walt Disney World is the place to be for a vacation, or a celebration.

Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida is a wonderful place comprised of four spectacular theme parks. The names are Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, Hollywood Studios and Epcot.

Magic Kingdom is a magical place. There is so much to do.

You can go visit the castle or stop and see the parade on Main Street. You can even take pictures with Disney princesses and characters.

Next, we have Animal Kingdom where you can take a safari ride to see all of the animals from A-Z.

Then there is Hollywood Studios - it is my personal favorite. It is filled with music, love and happiness. If you want to see a great play or musical, the place to go is Hollywood Studios.

Lastly is Epcot. Epcot is all about the future. The ride Spaceship Earth (also known as the big Epcot ball) is where you learn about the past and you can invent your own future.

The parks are nice, but there is much more to Disney than the parks. There is horseback riding at Circle D Ranch.

Then you have surrey bike riding at Saratoga Springs.

You can also do arts and crafts at Saratoga Springs.

There are also horse drawn carriage rides at Port Orleans.

Walt Disney also has special cuisine. Their food has real quality. One of the restaurants at Walt Disney world is the California Grill at the contemporary resort.

At the California Grill, they serve food from all over the world. My favorite is their sushi. Then there is Bama’s at Animal Kingdom Lodge.

At Bama’s, they serve some African meals and some American meals.

So go visit Walt Disney World because Disney Vacations + Family = Excitement and Magical Memories

All Sales Are Final By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’m not a fan of shopping lists. My approach is more along the lines of wander around select stores for hours, aimlessly scanning the departments for inspiration for that “perfect,” thoughtful gift.

The funniest part is, it works.

At the beginning of the Christmas season, I pretty much compile a list of people I need to buy for, followed by any suggestions or subtle hints that may have been dropped throughout the year. These are generally few and far between.

The rest is left up to that aforementioned “inspiration.”

While my system may not be the most efficient in terms of time, it ensures that I don’t miss anything in my survey of stores.

I refuse to simply buy something just for the sake of crossing off a gift on the checklist. May as well just re-gift then, no? It’s cheaper.

Speaking of price, it seems inevitable – for me, at least – that the second I find exactly what I’m looking for, it shows up somewhere else for less. Considerably less.

Like, along the lines of

25% off, free shipping and, oh, let’s throw in something free along with it, less. The kind of deal that you should really take advantage of, while returning your previous so-called “bargain” for a full refund.

But, as is the case with most things done during the rush of the holiday season, we buy on impulse, we occasionally pay too much in the process – and we don’t care all that much, because, hey, Christmas comes but once a year, right? Right.

Just remember that when the credit card bills come due in January.

Warm Wishes Drive Hospital.

Mather is accepting donations of NEW mittens, gloves, hats and scarves for distribution in our community.

Donations

will serve as decorations on the Hospital’s holiday tree in the main entrance before being distributed to those in need through Infant Jesus RC Church,

Long Island Cares and the Salvation Army.

The hospital will also collect NEW plush toys for distribution to pediatric patients in Mather’s

Ambulatory Surgery Center and Emergency Department.

All donations may be dropped off in the main lobby beginning Monday,

December 8th.

Resource Center Opens The Huntington Opportunity Resource Center has settled in at its permanent home at 1264 New York Avenue, marking the event December 3rd with an open house that commemorated the partnership among the Town of Huntington, its Community Development Agency and the County of Suffolk that provides a single location where residents can access Town and County resources and services related to economic opportunities and quality of life.

Spearheaded by Supervisor Frank P. Petrone, Councilwoman Tracey A. Edwards and County Executive Steve Bellone, with the support of the Huntington Town Board and the Suffolk County Legislature, the Center had been operating for the past five months from the Huntington Business Incubator two doors away, while renovations were undertaken on the former Huntington Station Enrichment Center. Over that period, the Center had 646 client visits from persons looking to take advantage of its range of services.

The Center provides resume preparation; helps

with job searches through the County Department of as other on-site training opportunities.

Made With Love Taking part in the Project Linus non-profit organization, first-grade students at Harborfields Washington Drive Primary School worked together on November 24th to make handmade blankets that would benefit seriously ill and traumatized children.

Assisted by parent volunteers, first-graders

took on the role of “blanketeers” and worked in groups of four to knot the cut ends of a fleece blanket. After each blanket was complete, students signed their name to a “made with love” tag that will be given to the recipient along with their new fleece blanket. The class contributed a total

of six fleece tie blankets to the organization.

Through the gifts of handmade blankets and afghans, Project Linus strives to provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized or otherwise might be in need of a big hug.

Awarded For Excellence Harborfields Central School District is proud to announce that Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School Reading Specialist Denise Bowles was awarded the New York State English Council’s Educator of Excellence Award for 2014.

Recipients of the New York State English Council Educator Award are nominated by colleagues and presented to educators

who inspire excellence in students as well as teachers. Along with the Educator of Excellence Award, Bowles was instrumental in the entire TJL reading department receiving the New York State English Council’s Program of Excellence Award for their “Word of the Day” program.

Six years ago, in an effort to enhance the

ongoing development of student vocabulary, the reading department at TJL launched a voluntary, building-wide vocabulary enrichment program called “Word of the Day.” This program has become a vital part of the school’s culture and fosters student learning through academically challenging and fun opportunities.

Headed To The Polls

East Northport Middle School hosted its annual student council officer’s election on November 6th-7th to coincide with Election Day. According to Mr. Luberto and Mrs. Aiello, the advisors in charge

of the election, the goal was to make the election as close to an authentic election as possible. Voting was conducted digitally on laptops and was completely voluntary.

Voting booths and student registrars were

set up in the lobby of the school where students, during lunch, registered and then voted. Voter turnout was up from last year to 75 percent school wide participation.

Fun With Cranberries On November 25th, third-grade students at Elwood’s James H. Boyd Intermediate School participated in several hands-on cranberry activities that incorporated literacy, writing, science and math concepts.

Prior to the traditional third-grade “Cranberry Day,” students researched

how the fruit is harvested and the different features of a cranberry. Students rotated to different stations where they engaged in interactive lessons with cranberries and recorded their results.

Actively using their five senses, third-graders participated in science and math activities such

as measuring, counting, finding the volume, examining the inside of a cranberry, bounce test for freshness and more. At one of the stations, students had the opportunity to taste a cranberry, drink cranberry juice and try cranberry jello.

Inspired by the giving holiday season, students, faulty and staff at Harborfield’s Oldfield Middle School banded together to collect food for their annual Thanksgiving Food Drive and gathered supplies to support military that represent the early US troops for “Operation Coast Guard.

the lighthouse, students learned about the history of the lighthouse and its role in maritime history.

Through interactive demonstrations and a lecture led by the United States Life-Saving Service (USLSS), students experienced the history and authentic artifacts

Thanksgiving Food Drive, receiving donations from students, faculty and staff in the middle school.

Seventh-grade advisors Mike Hopkins and Chris Murphy assisted students while they organized and sorted food into reusable bags, which were distributed to 17 families in need.

The middle school also collected food, hygienic

products and other essentials that would be shipped overseas to troops serving in the United States Military. “Operation Ziploc” middle school coordinator Joe Maiello facilitated students while they created care packages in Ziploc bags and wrote letters that were placed in individual packages, thanking troops for their bravery and service.

Council Honorees The Child Care Council of Suffolk, Inc. (CCCS) recently held its Champions of Children 29th Anniversary Luncheon at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury.

Two families who’ve worked tirelessly to provide the best lives for their families have brand new homes in time for the holidays, thanks to Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk.

At the age of 20, Kimberly Butler joined the U.S. Army. She has dedicated her life to giving back to the people who served alongside her. She now works as a jobs coordinator for the United Veterans Beacon House, assisting homeless veterans with locating employment.

Throughout the years, Butler has found temporary housing for her daughter and herself, but as Ryan entered middle school, Butler wanted to provide her with a stable, safe living environment to call home. Her partnership with Habitat has now made this dream possible.

Laura Arrington is a Dental Assistant at Moriches Dental, and she attends Suffolk Community College, where she’s taking prerequisites for the nursing program. Philip Jackson is a glazier for Moriches Glass, and attends Briarcliffe College for his Bachelor’s in Business Administration.

They care for their 12 yearold year old son Philip and 12 year-old nephew Kyren.

Laura and Philip’s first residence was a room in Riverhead. Gradually, they moved to an apartment of their own. Now, thanks to their hard work and

Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk they have a new place to call home.

Both houses were dedicated in Mastic Beach on November 26th, just in time for Thanksgiving dinner and during the ceremony Habitat volunteers and staff, and major sponsors of the home Brookhaven Science Associates, National Grid and Bank of America joined the families for the

key presentation.

Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk’s goal is to build an average of 12-15 houses annually, building for as long as needed to make sure every family in Suffolk County has a simple, decent and affordable place to live and call home.

Personality Of The Month

The Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) has named Suffolk Community College Men’s Soccer Coach Frank Vertullo as its Personality of the Month for December.

Vertullo, 34, of Babylon, coached the Suffolk County Community College Sharks to the National Championship last month, a repeat of his 2010 accomplishment.

Entering the junior college Final Four as the fourth seed with a 19-4-0 record, Suffolk played number one seed and host, Herkimer Community College, on

November 14th.

A twelfth minute goal by Romario Hulea was all the Sharks needed to avenge their 2013 loss to Herkimer in the National Championship game and advance, 1-0.

The Sharks continued as underdogs in the national title game on November 16 against number two seed Richland Community College from Texas, who previously defeated them 5-2 in September. Joseph Lopez and Hulea scored for the Sharks and goalkeeper Jon Zapata, named championship game MVP, made six saves in the second half to preserve Suffolk’s 2-1 lead and secure the championship title.

Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay said Coach Vertullo is an inspiration not only to student athletes, but to the College Community.

“Coach Vertullo’s leadership, inspiration, and ability to motivate has helped deliver two National Championships to Suffolk County Community College by our very talented and accomplished student-athletes,” McKay said. “Congratulations,” he added.

“There are so many factors that are involved in winning multiple national championships. Consistency, recruiting, experience and creating a family atmosphere within the program are the key components. The success of the program has also helped in the recruiting process of potential student-athletes wanting to leave home to play at Suffolk even without the convenience of campus housing. However, just bringing in talent is not always good enough, ” Vertullo, who was named Coach of the Tournament, said.

Former patient, 4 yearold Bobby Volk, who came through the Pediatric Emergency Department at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital in September and needed emergency surgery, presented a giant check to Dr. Richard Scriven, a pediatric surgeon, today in the lobby of Stony Brook Medicine.

Weeks after a successful surgery and very positive experience at Stony Brook

They also draw on my experiences from coaching in eight Final Fours in the last 14 years. Each year, we pull positives and negatives out of each Final Four experience and bring that into the next year’s tournament to further be prepared and to put the student-athletes and the program in the best possible position to succeed,” Vertullo said.

As a player, Vertullo played in the Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL), for the North Babylon Bulldogs and Massapequa TNT. Frank also competed for three years on the LIJSL Select Team and two years on the Eastern New York ODP. Vertullo played at Dowling College from 1997 to 2000 and was Conference Rookie of the Year, All-Conference three times, captain of the team for three seasons and starting center back. He also played for the New York Freedoms of the United Soccer Leagues (USL) in 2002 and 2003.

Vertullo served as Dowling’s assistant coach from 2001 to 2006, helping lead the Golden Lions to four NCAA Division 2 Final Fours and the 2006 National Championship.

Vertullo took over the Suffolk Community College men’s program in 2007 and has led the Sharks to five Region XV titles and two National Championships, been honored as Region XV Coach of the Year four times and NSCAA National Coach of the Year in 2010. Vertullo also won the New York Metro Intercollegiate Soccer Officials Association (NYMISOA) Sportsmanship Award in 2008.

Children’s, Bobby was watching a television show and the episode was about a bake sale. He asked his mother if he could have a bake sale.

After questioning him, he said he wanted to have one for Dr. Scriven, his team, and all the other children at Stony Brook, stating that “they need stuff.” Bobby and his mom Andrea baked cookies and brownies; Bobby packed

up his wagon, and sold the goodies to people at his mother’s job. In the end, Bobby raised almost $300!

Bobby, along with his parents, joined Dr. Scriven and members of Stony Brook Medicine to show their gratitude to the hospital and presented a check which will be contributed to the Children’s Hospital and the Child Life Program.
