Long Island Cares is one of the region’s most comprehensive hunger assistance organizations, which serves thousands of individuals and families in need. They provide food when and where it is needed, sponsor programs that promote self- sufficiency and they educate the public about the causes and consequences of hunger on Long Island.

So who faces hunger on Long Island?

More often than not, it is people who are just like you. Fewer than 5% of the individuals served by Long Island Cares and other organizations fighting poverty and hunger in our community are actually homeless.

According to the national study, Hunger in America, here are some staggering statistics that will allow you to better understand the need for organizations like Long Island Cares on our island.

There are approximately 283,700 people on Long Island that receive emergency food every single year. That equates to 64,900 people every week.

39% of Long Islanders who receive emergency food are children under the age of 18. While children are among the largest single population of hungry, they have virtually no voice; their needs are easily dismissed and overlooked and they must rely on others to access the feeding programs and services they need. Additionally, children who are hungry are more likely than their peers to experience behavioral issues, reduced ability to learn social skills and impaired cognitive learning, even

permanent brain damage. Lastly, I think it is important to mention that Food Banks are by far the single most important source of food for agencies with emergency food providers, accounting for 69% of the food distributed by pantries, 39% distributed by kitchens and 45% by shelters.

New York Cancer Foundation Celebrates Advances In Cancer Treatment

“Raising Hope for NY Cancer Patients” The non-profit New York Cancer Foundation recently honored CoFounder & CEO of Flatiron Health Nat Turner for his organization’s efforts to improve the lives of cancer patients during the inaugural Raising Hope Gala on Long Island.

This newly established gala seeks to raise funds for cancer patients experiencing extreme financial stresses. The

inaugural gala event attendees were very generous and generated significant funding for people in the greater metro area undergoing cancer treatment.

Turner’s company, Flatiron, is dedicated to improving the quality of care through shared technology. “My cousin’s battle against leukemia had a profound impact on me which help inspired

the creation of Flatiron Health,” said Nat Turner.

“Nat and his company are responsible for improving the care of thousands of patients. They provide better access to care and use technology to find clinical trials with cutting edge pharmaceuticals,” said Dr. Jeff Vacirca, CEO of the New York Cancer & Blood Specialists and Board President of the NY Cancer Foundation.

So how can you get involved with this organization to help those in need?

There are many ways! You can volunteer with the organization, even if it is just for a few hours, to help make a difference in the lives of others. Volunteers can participate in the following areas: Warehouse Sorting & Repacking (lifting is required), Clerical Tasks, Mobile Pantry, Food Pantries, Special Events, Food Drives or their Student Volunteer Corps. Congratulations to Northport High School’s Boys’ Cross-Country team who were crowned Division II Champions on Oct. 29 at the Suffolk County Championships.

Additionally, on Oct. 30 – the second day of the Suffolk County Individual Golf Championships at Rock Hill Country Club – senior James Alden scored 2-over par, 37 on the front nine and an even -36 on the back, to be crowned Individual Suffolk County Champion. This earned him a spot on the New York State Tournament Team competing this spring.

The high school’s swimming and diving team also won the overall League I Championship, for the third consecutive year led by Coach Drew Modrov. The team placed first in the 200 Medley Relay, 200 Free Relay and 400 Free Relay to go 3 for 3 on relay wins. They have qualified for the State Championships in all three.

Senior Chloe Stepanek won the 200 Free with a time of 1:46.82, breaking Northport High School, Suffolk County and the New York State record.

Chloe also won the 100 Free with a time of 49.81.

Additionally, Chloe led off our 200 Free Relay with a 23.31 in the 50 Free, which broke her personal, Northport High School and Suffolk County record in that event. These results qualify her for Automatic All-American status.

Additionally, Northport Middle School eighth grader Dorothy Amato won the League title in the 500 Freestyle and eighth grader Makenna O’Brien qualified for the State Championships in the 100 Butterfly with her third-place time of 59.90.

LEAGUE I CHAMPIONS - The Northport High School’s swimming and diving team also won the overall League I Championship for the third consecutive year.

Nesfield Recognized For Devotion To Foreign Language Education

Congratulations to Northport - East Northport Union Free School District’s World Language and ENL Chairperson Jennifer Nesfield for earning the Remunda Cadoux award for leadership in foreign language supervision on Nov. 2.

The New York State Association of Foreign Language Teachers recognized Ms. Nesfield at its 102nd annual conference in Saratoga where she was honored for her devotion to the profession.

Workshop topics range from, culturally responsive classrooms, successful teacher mentor programs, reading strategies for world language classes, cooperative learning, teacher portfolios, Common Core and instructional technology.

The prestigious supervision award was named after Remunda Cadoux, chairperson of the foreign language department at Christopher Columbus High School in New York City and a former member of the NYSAFLT Board of Directors. She

authored one of the first New York State syllabi for foreign language education and was the first woman to pass the Director of Foreign Languages eligibility examination in New York City.

This, in turn, will result in more targeted molecular therapies, which will then have a positive impact on patient’s lives.

Currently, he is a member of both the American College of Radiology and the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging, serves on committees of SNMMI at the regional, and national levels and is the current Program Chairman of the SNMMI Greater NY Chapter. His work has been published in numerous peer-review journals.

Westy in East Northport is hosting this drive as the designated drop off location for donations. In addition to collection, Westy will also provide storage for the donations as well as assist with final delivery.

The U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots

Program collects new, unwrapped toys for less fortunate children in the local communities. A shiny new toy delivers the message of hope to needy youngsters.

This act of kindness will help motivate the children to grow into responsible, productive, patriotic citizens and community leaders.

Please help your community by dropping off a donation at Westy Self Storage in East Northport located at 4049 Jericho Turnpike.

Toys for Tots began in

1947 when the wife of Major Bill Hendricks, USMCR handcrafted a Raggedy Ann doll and asked her husband to deliver the doll to an organization which would give it to a needy child at Christmas. When they realized that no such organization existed, they decided to start one. That Christmas a group of Marine Reservists in Los Angeles collected and distributed 5,000 toys to needy children.

That pilot program was so successful that the Marine

Corps adopted Toys for Tots in 1948 and expanded it into a nationwide campaign.

Presently the program has supported 258 million children by distributing 566 million toys to date.

Westy is open for drop off 7 days a week. Hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
