Two of the region’s most recognized authorities on childhood development are being brought together at a free seminar to help parents of young children assess and track their children’s intellectual growth and development.

The session, offered on Thursday, November 13th at Holy Family Regional School in Commack, will feature Dr. Abigail Jewkes and Dr. Michael Sampson, both of St. John’s University. Attendees will be given tools, and the knowledge to use them at home during at the event.

Ready, Set... Ready Yet? By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Getting ready, for a girl, is a complicated affair.

Rare is the female who can simply roll out of bed, jump in and out of the shower in 5 minutes, throw on the first outfit she pulls out of the closet, skip the makeup and extensive hair prep – and just go. I admire those who can, really, I do.

Imagine how many hours, days, weeks even, that are saved over the course of just one year – time that could be spent out and about, actually living.

But no, most of us have a whole routine, one that,

if anything, becomes lengthier and more complex the bigger the occasion. Like a weekday wedding, for instance.

Forget attempting to go into work, leave a little early and freshen up at home on the fly. No, I need to take the entire day off, allotting at least a good five/six hours to the beautification process.

Crazy? Perhaps. But who wants to rush? It’s nice to have some time to kick back and relax, allow plenty of time for hair mishaps, smudged makeup, chipped nail polish, runs in your pantyhose, traffic… all

the wonderful nuisances that only seem to happen when you have somewhere important to go.

Of course, in the end, people rarely notice all the effort. Everything falls into place, all is well and the time and effort… well, you probably could have cut it in half and come out looking much the same.

But such is the life of a girl.

We’re wired differently.

Think how many business industries thrive on our collective neuroses.

Knights Reign In spite of the stormy weather, Elwood-John H. Glenn High School’s homecoming game was well attended by community members, administrators and students, demonstrating their school spirit and support on Saturday, November 1st.

Although the parade and other homecoming festivities were postponed

until Nov. 8, the Elwood Knights varsity football team versed Bishop McGann-Mercy High School in the homecoming game. Keeping spirits high, the Glenn varsity cheerleading squad cheered as the Knights varsity team worked to claim a homecoming win.

During the game, students from the sophomore class sold hot

chocolate and Ramen Noodle Soup to help Knight fans keep warm.

The high school’s senior student council also had a booth and provided attendees with packaged snacks and drinks.

With a final score of 48-13, the Knights reined victorious over the Mercy Monarchs.

They’re bright yellow, they sit around your child’s neck and they are the main reason as to why your child complained the first two weeks of school more than any other year prior.

The new Massapequa High School student ID lanyards are known to everyone in the school as a cumbersome burden that serves no real and effective purpose. This new form of “security and safety enforcement,” as Doctor Barbra Williams puts it, “is to make sure that the security staff can prevent unwarranted intruders from entering the school.”

Robert Catinella, a Massapequa High School Senior, compares the new lanyards to “dog collars” and, just like a dog, when a student forgets his collar, he or she is subjected to unfair punishment.

detention, meaning that they cannot go outside for lunch for the day. In addition, that lunch detention can be found on one’s permanent record. For some kids, this could mean everything when it come to getting into a good college.

Who is to say that these lanyards, and the supposed purpose they serve, will even be a factor in a high stakes situation? If the school district wants to increase safety, they need to increase security, not tag their students with an ID card that serves no other purpose other than to act as a red flag for security guards.

And, to be completely honest, a yellow nylon lanyard isn’t going to stop any one crazy person from getting into a school building.

Rumors have been circulating in the building between the staff and students that these lanyards will soon have a magnetic strip in them, which will be required

to be used in order to enter the school. Teachers have to do this in the morning to gain access into the building before the students. Along with every student arriving in the middle lobby for all periods, this new policy, if implemented for the 2015-2016 school year, would make an already broken system chaotic and inefficient.

Massapequa School District is not alone in this new wave of “smart safety.” Students in Farmingdale, Amityville and Copiague high schools are being subjected to this plague too.

The only way to fix the problem of school safety is to actually address the issue properly and efficiently.

In this post Sandy Hook school shooting society we live in, we must not forget that, as a community, we should be pushing for safety and not some false sense of security.

Night Of Tears & Laughter

The auditorium at the Suffolk Y JCC was filled to capacity last Thursday as octogenarian and concentration camp survivor Eva Schloss took the stage to speak about her childhood with stepsister Anne Frank and her experiences during the holocaust.

Eva, whose family also went into hiding in Holland and was betrayed and subsequently sent to

the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp spoke eloquently and at length about her friendship with Anne, her experiences in Auschwitz and her life after her release.

Several dignitaries also spoke at the event including Congressman Steve Israel who presented Mrs. Schloss with a flag that was flown over the White House in her honor.

Words Of Wisdom Harborfields Central School District Board of Education President Dr. Thomas McDonagh visited students in Harborfields High School’s school-tocareer program on October 28th.

During his visit, Dr. McDonagh shared his professional career experiences and offered advice for students in the process of selecting a career path after high school.

As a feature of the career readiness program, guest speakers discussed their

current occupations and the path they took to achieve their desired career with students. During his visit, Dr. McDonagh spoke about his personal ambitions to become a physician at a young age, driven by his passion to help people. Dr. McDonagh also spoke about the educational steps and work experience he needed to successfully become a practicing physician.

For the second half of the class period, Dr. McDonagh welcomed questions about the medical field and his

personal position as a physician. He encouraged students to find a role model to aspire to and let their passion guide them through their career decision process.

“Students should start thinking about a career path as early as high school,” Dr. McDonagh said.

“Through this program, students are exposed to people in different careers, which could spark an interest they never thought of before or confirm a decided career path.”
