As dementia is a disease that affects thinking and memory, it is among the most feared and most devastating. Dementia is not inevitable as we age. While “senior moments” can happen to anyone, at any age, most of those occurrences are, in fact, just moments.

“Pre-pandemic, specialized services for individuals with dementia and their caregivers were already in high demand.

Now more than ever, caregivers are bearing the brunt of their loved one’s disease- trying to keep them safe, healthy, active, and engaged while at home,” said Director of Counseling Services and Health Operations Grace Johnson, LCSW. “This often contributes to caregiver stress, sadness, and burnout.

At LIAD, we continue to care for the mental-emotional health of caregivers by providing support groups and psychotherapy. Our goal is to help caregivers navigate

With more than 50,000 people on Long Island suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, many of us are all too familiar with the effects of cognitive impairment.

During the month of November, National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month, is a time to celebrate caregivers, especially those who are caring for loved ones and individuals with dementia such as Alzheimer’s.

“Until there is a cure, the Long Island Alzheimer’s & Dementia Center is a critical resource that can help families find guidance, support and hope,” said Executive Director Tori Cohen, LCSW. “Our licensed social workers provide trusted referrals, including doctors who may prescribe medications to help alleviate symptoms and slow the progress of the disease. Living with Alzheimer’s and other diagnosed cognitive disorders is not easy and should not be

Mork is Wallis’ service dog, helping Wallis help herself.

Mork retrieves the phone and other dropped items, pulls the wheelchair and opens doors.

Mork is just one of hundreds of service dogs that have been placed with children, adults and veterans with disabilities across the country through Canine Companions for Independence. The largest nonprofit provider of assistance dogs, Canine Companions is recognized worldwide for the excellence of its dogs.

It has facilitated matches since 1975, enhancing the lives of people with disabilities by providing expertly-trained assistance dogs and ongoing support without charge to ensure quality and longevity of the matches it makes between dogs and people.

“The service dogs create new opportunities and new possibilities for people that lead to increased independence

and confidence,” said Debra Dougherty, executive director of Canine Companions. She is located at the organization’s northeast region training center, the Miller Family Campus at 286 Middle Island Road in Medford (631-561-0200). _______ Local companions -Brad Johnson and Barney of Bayport: “When Brad met Barney, I saw the life come back into his eyes,” said mother Brenda Johnson.

Bobby Morcerf and Summit of Babylon: “With Summit I don’t have to ask for help as often. He is always there for me!”

Air Force veteran and retired Port Authority police officer Ken Hernandez and Miller of Westbury: “Miller is amazing. He provides me with the independence I’ve longed for.”

Kevin Schmidt and Kip of Islip Terrace: “He’s always at my side, I’m his guy. He

makes my life better. It’s been tough, and he gives me smile every day. It’s called Canine Companions, but the companion part is what really fulfills me.” _______ Adults with disabilities, including wounded veterans and veterans with disabilities, are partnered with trained service or hearing dogs. The assistance dogs, with adult support, also perform physical tasks for children with a range of disabilities. Canine Companions’ service dogs are expertly trained and also are partnered with working professionals in a health care, visitation, criminal justice or education setting.

The organization is supported by many people across Long Island and throughout the region, including Colonel E. David Woycik, Jr. (Ret.) United States Army. Woycik was raised in Huntington and resides in Garden City. He is a senior trial partner concentrating on personal injury, construction, highway design and toxic torts at Sanders, Sanders Block, Woycik, Viener & Grossman, P.C., of Mineola.

Woycik joined the board of directors of Canine Companion’s northeast region during 2010. Since then, he has actively supported the organization in deeds, financially and with fundraising. Most recently, a double figure donation was presented to Canine Companions in his honor by friend and fellow Hofstra University alumni James C. Metzger, owner of the Whitmore Agency of Garden City that provides insurance and estate planning. Metzger is wellknown across Long Island for his business services along with extensive support of athletic, education and other community programs.

helped Canine Companions organize an annual Veteran’s Day event -“Saluting Independence” -that recognizes service men and women from World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm and the War Against Terrorism. Since 2011, Canine Companions’ Veterans Day salute has raised more than $500,000 to support the puppies/dogs programs for deserving veterans.

“The program began as an awareness event with the dedication of a dorm room that David named in honor of veterans,” added Dougherty. “A year later, the Outstanding Service Award, named for Woycik and Lance Corporal Matias Ferriera, was created to annually honor one person or corporation for outstanding service in military service and/ or volunteering to assist veterans.”

Colonel Woycik served overseas in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait for Operation Desert Storm and recently for Operation Enduring Freedom in the War Against Terrorism. He is a well-decorated soldier and has been awarded the Distinguished Service Medal, Bronze Star and the Meritorious Service Ribbon. Lance Corporal and Machine Gunner Ferriera was injured by an improvised explosive device (IED) blast in the Helmand Province of Afghanistan during 2011. He sustained bilateral below the knee amputations and a pelvic fracture. Today, Ferreira is a Suffolk County police officer.

Additional emphasis has been placed on fundraising this year to support expansion of the program for veterans to include men and women with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Captain Victor Prato of East Marion will be honored at the ceremony along with his service dog Barbossa.

Severely wounded in Afghanistan during 2017 when his vehicle was targeted by a suicide bomber, Captain Prato was presented with the Purple Heart by President Donald Trump at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

“I knew that a perfect fit for me would be to get a dog that could be my companion and be with me as I navigate the world now,” said Captain Prato.

“Barbossa is my rock.”

Captain Prato was wounded when he served under 4-Star General John “Mick” Nicholson, the recipient of Canine Companions’ 2020 Outstanding Service Award. At the time, General

Nicholson was commander of Resolute Support and U.S. Forces-Afghanistan.

Presently, he is president of the PenFed Foundation that empowers military service members, veterans and their communities with the skills and resources to realize financial stability and opportunity.

As Captain Prato was training to receive his service dog, he and General Nicholson enjoyed an unexpected reunion.

The general is a Canine Companions volunteer puppy raiser. He now is raising WestPoint, a future veteran companion.

“As we draw closer to Veterans Day and celebrate the service that America’s men and women have dedicated to the country,” concluded Dougherty, “this also is a time to champion the companions that assist the veterans who have returned with combat injuries and need a little extra support in their lives.”

Celebrating Creativity-Creative Responses to Challenging Times

Smithtown Township Arts Council is pleased to announce Celebrating Creativity: Creative Responses to Challenging Times a fine art exhibition featuring eighty-six works by fifty-one artists to be held through Dec. 19 at Mills Pond Gallery in St. James. Regular Gallery hours are Wed. - Fri., 10 am - 4pm; Sat. and Sun., 12 – 4 pm. The gallery is closed Mondays and Tuesdays and closed Nov. 25 – 29. Artists’ creative response to the coronavirus crisis brings us works that represent the experience of artists during the pandemic. We asked artists to show us what they have been creating during the pandemic and to share with us their thoughts and feelings about creating during these challenging times.

Some works in the exhibit express the fear and anxiety while others find beauty in nature, or celebrate simple pleasures of everyday life. Some artists created to share memories of past joyful times… some created work specifically about the pandemic. Many shared that the creation of their art helped process their feelings.

The common thread…joy in the simple act of creating.

Army Soldier Desperate For Help To Rescue Cat From The Middle East Being deployed to the Middle East can be challenging for any U.S. soldier. But when you get difficult family news from back home, it can make getting through that period even more difficult. When Army Sergeant Ash received difficult family news, she took comfort in a rescued kitten that was near death.

Now people wonder if she saved the kitten, or if the kitten actually saved her.

Coming back home to the States, she is desperate to bring the cat, Rona, along with her. To help make it happen, she has turned to Guardians of Rescue, which has a reputation of helping soldiers.

“We know all too well how important and lifesaving these pets are to our soldiers stationed in the Middle East,” explains Robert Misseri, president of Guardians of Rescue, an animal rescue organization. “When they come back home, they can’t bear to leave them there, and we agree that it’s not safe. Leaving the cat in the Middle East will end up being a death sentence for it.

We will make every effort to bring Rona home to her, but we need the public’s support to help make it happen.”

Sgt. Ash’s roommate worked for a veterinarian on base, where they had been given a rescued kitten that was only a week old.

They didn’t know if it would make it, as it was near death, and they knew she needed around-the-clock care.

That’s when she decided to hook up Sgt. Ash with the kitten, thinking that taking care of her would help distract her thoughts from all the family issues that were weighing on her.

Sgt. Ash took the kitten and gave it all the care that it needed. Twice she thought she almost lost her, but the kitten held on and pushed through. Once she overcame being sick, she decided to name her Rona, which was after the coronavirus, because she felt that the virus is tough to fight, and

Rona had put up a great fight. She went on to spend all of her time with Rona, creating a loving bond and seeing her as a sign of hope and strength.

“We saved each other and we belong together,” shares Sgt. Ash. “I pray that Guardians of Rescue will be able to bring Rona home to the States, where we can live out our lives together.

I’m grateful for their help, as well as to everyone who donates to help make it possible.”

Guardians of Rescue is no stranger to helping soldiers bring their pets back from deployment. They have helped many people bring back their dogs and cats, all through the help of the public. Bringing pets back is not an easy task, and it’s one that is also costly. Not only will Rona have to go through a medical check, but the organization will need to work with other organizations in the Middle East to help make it happen, and it will need to pay for the travel expenses. Pa l - O - M i n e Equestrian is a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations that was founded by Lisa Gatti.

Located at 829 Old Nichols Road in Islandia, Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week. This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with stateof-the-art footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas.

Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances.They also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program specifically designed for military members.

In honor of Veteran’s Day, Pal-O-Mine wants you to know just how they can help those who have served in our military, along with those who are still serving our nation.

For more than four thousand years, horses have been an integral part of warfare.

Today, horses are still playing an important role in war, this time in the recovery of military veterans who have suffered emotional and/ or physical injuries. Pal-O-Mine Equestrian is an EAGALA Designed Military Program.This designation asserts that EAGALA Certified Professionals working with the military have specialized training and experience in the military community. Sessions at the farm are action, not talk and they offer individual, group and family sessions.

Pal-O-Mine offers programs to Verterans from Vietnam, Gulf War, Iraq and Afghanistan and for Service men and women who fought in Operation Iraqi Freedom,

Operation New Dawn, Operation Enduring Freedom and for Active Duty Service Members.

It’s not always easy to ask for help, but the benefits of doing so outweigh the fear. One military member who received help from this organizaiton mentioned the following, “For someone in the military like me, it’s hard to swallow my pride and ask for help. This was a safe environment to open up in. Sometimes the horses talked for me and helped show me the path to save my marriage.”

Please note, all students, volunteers and staff must complete, sign and submit a Health Screening Questionnaire prior to coming to Pal-O-Mine.

• Symptom-free for 14 days.

• Meet height, weight and age requirements to donate blood.

All information provided will be kept confidential and be used only to qualify individuals as a donor.

Results of a COVID-19 test or antibody results must be uploaded to the New York Blood Center

website before donating.

Once test results are uploaded, donors should call St. Catherine of Siena at (631) 4690989 to schedule an appointment.

As a reminder, individuals should eat and drink before their donation time and bring with them identification that includes name and photo.
