Senator Mattera Working With EJ’S PJS To Collect Pajamas To Help Local Families

Senator Mario R. Mattera (2nd Senate District) has joined with EJ’S PJS to serve as a collection point for their annual pajama drive. Senator Mattera’s office will be collecting pajamas for young children and teens to ensure that everyone has the supplies they need to enjoy the holidays in comfort.

EJ’s PJs has made its mission over the past 11 years to collect and distribute pajamas to the children and teens who need them the most. Started by Patricia Poggi, the effort is inspired by her three sons Edward, Jeremy and Patrick and

involves the entire family and the local community. It grew out of the family’s holiday tradition of “Poggi Plaid Pajamas” when they decided as a family that they wanted to share their warm and happy feeling with those in need.

Now an annual event, it started with a simple bin on the family porch to including organizations with drop-off boxes. Their goal last year was to gather over 1,000 pajamas and they are working with everyone to make sure this year is the best yet.

“I am proud to partner with EJ’s PJs and the Poggi family to help deliver the

warmth of the holidays to everyone. I thank Patricia and the boys for all they have done and invite everyone who is able to visit my office to donate. Let’s make sure that all of our children and teens have what they need,” stated Senator Mattera.

Anyone who would like to donate is invited to visit Senator Mattera’s district office at 180 East Main Street, Suite 210, in Smithtown. Donations will be accepted from now through Friday, December 9th during regular business hours.

On The 80th Anniversary Of The Sherman Tank, The Museum Of American Armor Seeks Those Who Crewed These Legendary Vehicles

On the 80th anniversary of the iconic Sherman tank that spearheaded America’s liberation of Europe during

World War II, the Museum of American Armor is seeking to honor those veterans who crewed these legendary

vehicles along their families. The Armor Museum has put out an “All Points Bulletin” for Sherman tank

families to join the Armor Museum in observing the milestone anniversary on Thursday, November 10th at 12 Noon, on the eve of Veterans Day 2022.

“Sadly, we recognize that many of the Sherman tank crews are gone but their legacy is lasting. The invitation is out to all surviving Sherman tankers but we are also asking the families of Sherman veterans to join us in ceremonies that mark the 80th anniversary of when this iconic tank was introduced into combat,” stated Kevin Carroll, the Armor Museum’s Community Affairs Director.

Armor Museum’s founder and president Lawrence Kadish stated, “The Armor Museum continues to offer a powerful presentation that keeps alive the legacy of our nation’s military and the gift of freedom they have given all of us. The Sherman tank is an important part of that

story and so we are asking tanker veterans or their survivors to come forward and help us preserve their legacy.”

In recognition of its considerable importance, the Armor Museum’s acquisition of a Sherman tank was one of the first actions undertaken by Mr. Kadish when he undertook the creation of the museum. “You can’t effectively tell the story of American courage during World War II without this particular tank on operational display,” observed Mr. Kadish.

Some 50,000 Sherman tanks were built by nearly a dozen different manufacturers during World War II, making them available to the Allies as well as American forces fighting in Europe and the Pacific. While not as well armed as its German opponents, the Sherman proved to be reliable, relatively fast, and

produced in great numbers. As combat evolved during the conflict American tankers changes their tactics to confront and defeat the enemy’s superior armor.

Michael Sapraicone, Senior Armor Museum Trustee said, “This museum is a unique commitment by public and private sectors to preserve and present a seminal chapter in the history of our world that is still defining current events around the globe. But to put that in perspective, we need to hear from our Sherman veterans and their families as we pay tribute to a weapon that was manned by brave Americans nearly a century ago.”

Sherman veterans or their families are invited to reach out to the museum through its web site, www. museumofamericanarmor. com to confirm their attendance.

Elwood Girl Scouts Earn Silver Award For Beach Recycling Station Project

Four members of Elwood Girl Scout Troop 1619 – Elwood-John H. Glenn High School freshman Megan Scully and Rebecca Stawecki, along with friends Maeve O’Connor and Jacqueline O’Grady of St. Anthony’s High School – recently earned their Silver Award for an ambitious project, a beach recycling station that they installed at Crab Meadow Beach on Oct. 2. Beachgoers can select baskets from the station and pick up anything that will harm the ocean and recycle it, then return the baskets.

Huntington Town Councilwoman Joan Cergol was in attendance at the installation to cut the ribbon with the group of students.

The Silver Award is the second highest award that Girl Scouts can earn, demanding a minimum of 50 work hours per girl to complete the project. Once they began planning, O’Connor, O’Grady, Scully and Stawecki were determined to try and make a difference in the reduction of sea pollution to help sea life, making that the main focus of the project. After partnering with sustainability company Relic, the four students presented their project to the town and Girl Scouts of Suffolk County, asking for their help and permission to proceed with further action. Once permission was given, they worked to build awareness and raise funds for the project, including making posters and bookmarks and hosting a garage sale.

Legislator Donnelly Joins With Island Harvest For “Turkey & Trimmings” Collection Campaign

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) is proud to partner with Island Harvest to support its 14th Annual “Turkey & Trimmings” Food Collection Campaign. Collections are currently underway and will be accepted through the holiday season but are especially requested before Thanksgiving.

Island Harvest anticipates higher demand for supplemental food support this holiday season due to financial pressure on Long Island families who are already struggling with record high inflation and the increased cost for food fuel, and other household necessities. According to Randi Shubin Dresner, president & CEO of Island Harvest, increased costs for turkeys, plus potential shortages, could limit the number of turkeys food banks will distribute this holiday season but Island Harvest expects to collect and distribute approximately 14,500 “turkey and trimmings”

meals to Long Islanders in need this year.

Holiday food items in need and requested as donations include:

• Turkey / Ham / Chicken

• Mash Potato Mix (Boxed)

• Canned Tuna / Chicken

• Canned Vegetables

• Canned Soups

• Gravy (Canned / Dry Mix)

• Beans (Canned / Dry / Bagged)

• Stuffing (Boxed / Bagged)

• Beans / Rice / Quinoa (Boxed / Bagged)

• Nuts / Seeds / Dried Fruits

• Canned Fruit in Natural Juice

• Peanut Butter

• Rolled Oats / Oatmeal

• Whole Grain, Low Sugar Dry Cereals

• Shelf-Stable Milk / Milk Substitutes

• Cranberry / Apple / Fruit Juice (Plastic / Carton only)

• Vegetable, Olive and Canola Oil

• Personal Care Products

/ Toiletries

Donations can be dropped off at Legislator Donnelly’s District Office, 130 West Jericho Turnpike in Huntington Station, Monday through Thursday between the hours of 9 am and 4 pm through Monday, through November 21 to ensure they can be distributed to needy families in time for them to have a Happy Thanksiving. For more informaiton, please visit www.islandharvest.org

“Food insecurity is a reality for far too many and nobody in our community should know hunger. I applaud Island Harvest for their commitment to ensuring that everyone in need is able to put a good, healthy and nutritious meal on their holiday table again this year.” said Legislator Donnelly. “I am happy to support them by having my office collect donations for this critically important cause and thank everyone in advance for their generosity.”

Harborfields High School Students Receive All-County Jazz Honors

Six Harborfields High School students were recently selected for the Suffolk County Music Educators Association’s All-County Jazz ensembles: Jackson Ferrara (lead trombone, High School Instrumental Jazz), Peter Hoss (lead tenor saxophone, High School Instrumental Jazz), Kam Johansen (lead trumpet, High School Instrumental Jazz), Hartley Semmes (trumpet, High School Instrumental Jazz),

Rosenthal (drum set, High School Instrumental Jazz) and Maddie Woodward (soprano, Vocal Jazz).

With these five instrumental selections, roughly 30 percent of the SCMEA All-County High School Instrumental Jazz program will consist of Harborfields students, making Harborfields the district with the largest representation in the county in that group this year.

“Given that this is a true

All-County designation, not based on school size or region, that’s all the more impressive,” Harborfields High School Jazz Band Director Dan Bilawsky said. “While we have a small program compared to many schools, our students who study jazz put their all into their efforts, and these selections are a reflection of that level of commitment and hard work.”

about you and help them predict whether you will be a good client. The insurers crunch numbers to gauge how much of a risk you’ll be. We all are aware of that. But they also predict how profitable you will be over a number of years.

Want to learn what will make you an attractive customer? Speak to an agent. Be respectful of the agent’s knowledge. You’ll likely learn that the agent isn’t simply a salesman. They’re often impressive educators and fiscal watchdogs.

What Are Clinical Trials?

Breast cancer treatments are highly effective, which is one reason why the National Cancer Institute can report that the fiveyear survival rate for nonmetastatic breast cancer is 90 percent. However, in certain situations, doctors may feel that the existing standard for breast cancer treatment may not be enough to help women overcome their disease. In such instances, doctors may discuss clinical trials with women battling breast cancer. The American Cancer Society defines clinical trials as research studies in which people volunteer to help doctors find ways to prevent or treat disease. The National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc.® points out that all current standards of treatment began as clinical trials. However, that does not mean women diagnosed with breast cancer should automatically sign up to participate in clinical trials. There are pros and cons to participating in clinical trials, and breast cancer patients can speak with their medical teams about the advantages and disadvantages of each trial they’re considering. One myth worth dispelling is that clinical trials are only an option for people who have been diagnosed with advanced stage cancer. In fact, the NCI notes that clinical trials are available for all stages of cancer. A database of NCI-supported clinical trials can be found at https://www.cancer.gov/ about-cancer/treatment/ clinical-trials/search.

Harborfields Senior Receives National Music Recognition

In being selected for the National Association for Music Education’s All-National program, Harborfields High School senior Allie Ebanks was tagged as one of the nation’s shining musical stars. Only 55 students in all of New York, regardless of instrument or discipline,

were chosen for NAfME AllNational ensembles, and Ebanks was the only cellist in the state to have been picked for the All-National Orchestra. She will be rehearsing and performing with that ensemble in November in National Harbor, Maryland.

“I am honored and

grateful to have been selected to represent New York State at AllNational,” Ebanks said. “I would not be where I am today without the support of my family, friends, amazing teachers and the Harborfields community.”

South African Jazz Icon Brings Music And History To Harborfields

Sounds and stories from South Africa came to the fore at Harborfields High School on Oct. 11. Saxophonist and flutist McCoy Mrubata, a legendary figure in his homeland and a recipient of the South African Music Awards’ Lifetime Achievement Award in 2022, spent the day working with Harborfields students, focusing on his compositions and history.

Prior to this visit, the Harborfields High School Jazz Band was treated to a private Zoom seminar with Seton Hawkins, the director of public programs and education resources at Jazz at Lincoln Center (and the host of “South

African Jazz” on SiriusXM Real Jazz). That talk, coupled with a month of preparation on two of Mrubata’s compositions, set the stage for this unique educational experience.

During this full-day clinic, Mrubata and one of his bandmates, guitarist Gary Wittner, coached the jazz band through two originals – “Mr. and Mrs. Adonis” and “Bra Gib.” Then, with instrumental music and AP Global students as an audience, the band performed both numbers with their illustrious guests before turning the program over to Hawkins and Mrubata, who helped to frame the latter’s life within the

context of South African history and, specifically, apartheid. The visit then came to an end with a saxophone session where Mrubata spent time working with the jazz band’s reed players.

“This entire day was an ear- and eye-opening experience for everybody involved,” Harborfields High School Jazz Band Director Dan Bilawsky said. “There is absolutely no substitute for these types of first-person encounters, and I’m so pleased that Mr. Hawkins and I were able to coordinate this unique, interdisciplinary gathering. It was a wonderful day in every respect.”

Two Northport-East Northport School District Faculty Recognized As “Women Of Distinction”

The role of mental health staff was highlighted on Sunday, October 23 as two staff members of the Northport-East Northport School District were recognized as “Women of Distinction” by the Town of Huntington. Northport High School Counselor Jenny Konop and East Northport Middle School Psychologist Kristen Karkota were both honored for their work in supporting district students.

At the event hosted by Assemblyman Keith Brown, 15 women from throughout the Town of Huntington were honored for their positive impact. Kristen Karkota was nominated by a parent who shared that she “exemplified what it means

to be a loving, protective and supportive person in people’s lives when they need those qualities the most.”

Jenny Konop was also nominated by a district parent, who highlighted Mrs. Konop’s ability to support students beyond just college applications and course selections. When presenting Mrs. Konop with her award, Assemblyman Keith Brown shared “her dedication to her students shows in everything she does. She goes above and beyond to not only help students create schedules and apply to colleges but help students deal with their mental health.” Both women were presented with certificates during a celebratory

brunch.

“It’s a very humbling experience to be recognized. People see the work that we do on the surface – scheduling and things of that nature –but we’ve seen this huge increase in the needs of students and their families with regard to mental health. It’s so nice to be seen for the work that we do and the relationships we have built with students and families,” said Mrs. Konop.

Mrs. Karkota echoed that sentiment and shared that “Saying ‘thank you’ was truly not enough to emphasize how appreciative I was to receive this. It felt really good to know that I made a difference in someone’s life.”

Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta Congratulates Northport Middle School Student Michaela Bruno

Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta welcomed fifth grade student Michaela Bruno and her family to the October meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature to congratulate her on taking first place in the fifth-grade division in the annual Brookhaven National Laboratory’s Elementary School Science Fair.

Due to the COVID pandemic, this was the third year that the contest was held virtually. One hundred and eightynine students from Kindergarten to Grade 6 submitted projects for the competition from

elementary schools across Long Island. They were judged by elementary school teachers and Brookhaven Lab scientists and engineers.

Michaela Bruno, a fifth-grade student at the Northport Middle School, Northport-East Northport School District, won first place in her division for her project, Here Comes the Sun, which examined the best substances to block ultraviolet rays.

By testing a variety of materials (including six solids and four liquids), she determined that aluminum foil and dark colors offer the best protection. This was a fitting topic for Michael

as she would like to be an astronaut or engineer and she had heard that UV rays are dangerous to people, especially those in space.

“I congratulate all of the students and commend their teachers for participating in this annual science competition. Since taking office in 2015, I believe I have had winners from my district each year, and many of them have been young female students. I am very proud of Michaela and hopes she pursues her dream of becoming as astronaut,” said Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta.

Following the traditions of an interfaith gathering of the local houses of worship for the past 30-plus years, the Hauppauge community will again celebrate the start of the Thanksgiving season. This year, we will be meeting in person at Temple Beth Chai at 870 Townline Road, Hauppauge, NY 11788 for the Interfaith Thanksgiving Service. St. Thomas More R.C. Church, the Hauppauge United Methodist Church, Temple Beth Chai of Hauppauge, and Calvary Lutheran Church of Hauppauge, will be offering

Area Houses Of Worship To Host Zoom Annual Interfaith Pre-Thanksgiving Services

a virtual gathering of the community. It will be hosted by Temple Beth Chai and led by Rabbi Stein, Cantor Stein, Fr. Antony Asir, Pastor Zachary Dean, and Rev. Barbara Whitlow at 7pm on Wednesday, November 23, 2022 at Temple Beth Chai. All are welcome. We will also broadcast on Zoom. Started in the 1980’s, the local Hauppauge houses of worship have shared the celebration of the season with each other by taking turns hosting an interfaith worship service. The religious leaders as well as congregation members

led prayers and joined in choir-led singing, in sharing A Capella hymns, as well as musical-instrumentations. A food collection of canned and boxed items (to assist with the local food pantries) as well as a monetary collection was always held. Fast forward a few decades, and the money collected became the basis for an annual scholarship to a Hauppauge High School senior from one of the participating houses of worship.

This year, we will resume with a food collection. Alternatively, donations may

be made by credit or debit card to www.bethchaiof hauppauge.com and click on “Donate Now”. Your donation of any size will be contributed to a local food pantry. Please select the “General Fund” when making your donation.

Looking forward to seeing you on zoom on Wednesday

evening (November 23) at 7pm as we usher in the annual service. For more info, please contact Temple Beth Chai of Hauppauge at (631) 724-5807.

Harborfields High School inducted 121 new National Honor Society members, including 24 seniors, in a lovely Oct. 12 ceremony at the high school’s auditorium. After NHS Tutoring Coordinator Emma Kirshchner led the pledge of allegiance, Principal Dr. Marie Netto welcomed the audience of proud parents and family members. During the candle ceremony, introduced by President Aliyah Steinberg, five executive board members – Vice President Daniel Panettieri, Community Service Coordinator James Ricci, Publicist Briana Mercuri, Secretary Lindsay Sung, and Historian Ivie-Ann Mergille – lit the candles and spoke on the NHS standards of scholarship, leadership, service and character. Steinberg then led the new inductees in the NHS pledge. Photo courtesy of Harborfields Central School District

Since Veterans Day occurs in November, our Charity of the Month is one of Suffolk County’s foremost advocates for the interests of our veterans, the Ronkonkoma-based Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW).

MHAW offers a wide range of support services to Suffolk County veterans by connecting them with affordable housing, medical and mental health assistance, case management, financial and legal referrals, employment assistance programs, and food pantries to help combat food insecurity.

This article in particular focuses on one important component of MHAW’s veteran services, the Joseph P. Dwyer Veterans Peer Support Project. Named to honor the memory of an Iraq War hero and Army medic from Mt. Sinai who lost his battle with PTSD, the Joseph P. Dwyer Veterans Peer Support Project is a peer-to-peer initiative offered in collaboration with the Suffolk County Veterans Service Agency.

The Dwyer Project serves veterans, service members, and their families with such post-service transitional issues as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury, although a formal diagnosis is not required for participation. They offer weekly peer groups both in person and virtual, and they also host monthly in-person community resource activities as well as a bi-monthly senior veteran group.

The Dwyer Project’s trained “Veteran Peer Mentors” have served in various branches of the Armed Forces and understand the reintegration needs of those who have been in the military, regardless of era or branch of service. This Project accepts all veterans, no matter their discharge status. All group sessions are confidential and anonymous in a safe, and trusting environment, free of judgment.

“Peer specialists are critical allies for our veterans,” says Colleen Merlo, CEO of the Association for Mental Health and Wellness. “They understand what other veterans are going through and can offer

As described by the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, peer support workers are “people who have been successful in the recovery process who help others experiencing similar situations. Through shared understanding, respect, and mutual empowerment, peer support workers help people become and stay engaged in the recovery process and reduce the likelihood of relapse.”

It is a true power to have this type of communication,” said one a local veteran that is involved with The Dwyer Project.

“My facilitators are fantastic in organizing programs and ideas for how to help each other. The group is fundamental to what we need. When you get veterans together and get them talking, they can work out their issues. This is one of the most important programs for veterans I have ever seen.”

The Dwyer Project’s free, confidential, peer-to-peer approach has attracted support from both veterans and mental health professionals statewide. In fact, this year’s state budget includes funding for this Project in all 62 counties. Additionally, a national veteran peer initiative is pending in Congress, and it all started here in Suffolk County.

If you are a veteran interested in peer-to-peer support, or if you know a veteran in need, call (516) 807-4952 or email mcorinne@mhaw.org. Also, please visit www.dwyerproject.org for more information.

To every veteran this Veterans Day and always, thank you for your selfless service.
