Those in the National Guard are trained to be versatile, providing for humanitarian aid, domestic emergencies, combat missions, and homeland security operations.

The Air Force Reserve, Air National Guard, Army Reserve, Coast Guard Reserve, and Navy Reserve are the other branches made up of servicemen and servicewomen who primarily work civilian jobs but may be called to full-time military duty if necessary.

Making Melodies Seventh graders at Oldfield Middle School in the Harborfields Central School District tried their hands at learning the mountain dulcimer during the month of October. Learning this extremely accessible instrument enabled beginning musicians to learn the basics of making music, while challenging advanced musicians to build melodies, harmonies and chords. Students had the opportunity to compose their own solos, to play

duets or collaborate and create rounds with other students. Each shared their solo composition with the class, as well as the title of the piece and the story behind it.

“This project was the first opportunity students had to create their own compositions,” said music teacher Jessica Lowenhar, “and it was wonderful to watch them express themselves creatively with what they learned in class.”

When people ask me how I landed my first job in journalism, I often have to laugh and say, “I didn’t. I made my own job.” Or as I like to put it, “No one offered me a seat at the table. I had to get out some wood, a hammer and nails, and build my own chair.” It was the winter of 2005 and I happened to have a friend who was getting into the arena of online press release distribution. I inquired if he was planning to add any articles to the mix, and offered up my writing services free of charge.

I hadn’t yet written professionally, but I knew a bit about writing and a bit about the entertainment industry.

When I was asked to pitch the creative direction for an editorial (articles) portion of his newswire, I suggested interviewing celebrities and newsmakers.

Since I wasn’t yet asking for any money, I got a half-hearted greenlight. “If you can make it happen, then you can run it,” I was told. The very first interview I

landed is still burned on my brain.

It was one of the cast members from the very first season of The Apprentice. At the time, thirteen years ago, it felt like quite a feat to get anyone notable to speak with me for an interview.

My first handful of interviews left me giddy with excitement in a rather childish way, mostly because I couldn’t believe that by simply declaring that I was going to become something, it actually began to happen. Before I knew it, I was interviewing talk show hosts, media personalities; a musician here, an actor there.

The ball was starting to roll.

After eight years and more than one hundred interviews that eventually rose to the level of Oscar winners, Emmy winners, Grammy winners and U.S. presidential candidates, I parted ways from this original position.

For quite a while I felt certain that an opportunity like that would never come my way again.

Time went by (five years to be exact), when I had an epiphany.

Nobody had given me that initial opportunity. I created it, myself.

And if I created it once, I could create it again.

Once again, I dipped into my bucket of fairy dust and declared that I was going to build a syndicated interview column from scratch. In fact, it was my New Year’s resolution nearly one year ago. I didn’t know exactly how I would re-build these important relationships, get media outlets to come on board or get anyone to say yes to an interview, but I knew I was going to do it. Well, here we are, ten months later, and my portfolio of published and syndicated interviews is more substantial now than it was eight years ago before I ventured out on my own.

My question for you to contemplate this week is this: Are you currently waiting for permission to do something you’ve always wanted to do? Is there something creative inside of you that wants to come out, but, “no one will give you the chance”?

If a seat at the table is alluding you, it may be time to roll up your sleaves and build your own chair.

November’s Charity of the Month is:

The Book Fairies is an organization located in Freeport, NY. Six years ago, founder Amy Zaslansky heard about a classroom that had no books to offer to its students.

Amy decided to start a book drive for used children’s books so she could hopefully be able to donate books to this classroom.

By word of mouth and hard work, this drive took off and resulted in a final donation of about 3,500 books!

Driven by her desire to make a difference in her community, Amy later created The Book Fairies, a 501C3 non-profit. The Book Fairies accepts donations of new and gently used books, and connects them with libraries, schools, veteran organizations, soup kitchens and more organizations throughout all five boroughs and on Long Island that do not have the funds to foster the love of reading.

Reading materials can not only foster literacy and academic success, but they can also provide a respite from personal struggles and nature a love of reading across age groups. 50% of schools that this organization works with does not have libraries. 64% of fourth graders in New York State read below their grade level. Books can be expensive and many people do not have the funds to afford reading material.

Thankfully, Book Fairies are there to help!

Their first year as a non-profit, The Book Fairies collected 35,000 books. As of today, they have surpassed 1.4 million books collected!

They function out of their main office in Freeport, but they also work with 40 different special needs sites that pickup book donations and bring them to their office. Every book that they collect goes through sorting, their process of thoroughly examining the type of book and condition it’s in. With only 2 staff members, The Book Fairies heavily relies on the work of selfless volunteers, who generously give of their time to help this charity! The Book Fairies receive help from about 1,500 volunteers each year!

Because of their book donations, many people have been able to experience the joy of reading. One local school that received many book donations through this organization in turn saw their school wide reading level increase 400%!

If you would like to get involved with The Book Fairies, you can! They are in need of sorting volunteers to come to their Freeport location on one of their sorting days (Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday) and help sort through all their current book donations. First time volunteers will go through a brief training for about 10-15 minutes and then they can continue to volunteer without addtional training as much as they would like. If you are 13 or older you can come alone and if you are younger than 13 you will need a guardian to accompany you. If you’re interested in volunteering as a sorter, there is no need to reserve your space. Simply show up at their Freeport location (70 North Main St. Back Entrance) on one of their sorting days between 10AM and 3PM! Additionally, book donations are always welcome! If you would like to donate books, you can do so at their Freeport location during those same sorting hours or you can drop off books at any time behind their office at their book-drop location.

You can also visit one of their local book donation sites or arrange for your books to be picked up if you have five or more boxes of donations! Also, if you are interested in supporting their mission and donating financially, you can simply donate to their cause on their website at www.TheBookFairies.org/Donate.

passion for being readers and writers with educators from all over Long Island. nErD Camp Long Island draws its name from the term “Ed Camp”, or an “Unconference” — a nontraditional conference that is planned and organized in advance with very little content as to the day’s activities.

The planning instead is decided by the participants the morning of the conference, based on

committed eight minutes to each book they chose to get a satisfactory “taste” of the story and its genre, and then gave it score of 1-3.

“Exposure to different types of literature will encourage children to read books that they may not otherwise have developed an interest in,” said third-grade teacher and event coordinator Mrs. Liz Held.

types of literature for children to sample, and students enjoyed titles such as “The Gingerbread Boy”, “Our Strange New Land,” and more.

“I really like reading,” said Brendan, a third-grader at James H. Boyd. “I like to see how authors hook you in the beginning, and then all of a sudden you don’t want to put the story down.”

Rachael Kilgour is a passionate and engaging Minnesota-born and Bostonbased performing artist whose songs merge the personal and political. Her sincere lyricdriven work has been called both brave and humane.

National Commendation Harborfields High School recently announced eight seniors who were named Commended Students in the 2019 National Merit Scholarship program.

Students Mikaela Gordon, Katherine Kennedy, Genie Miraglia, Katherine Paradise,

Samuel Puccio, Emma Riley, Yatharth Sharma and William Waring were each presented with letter of commendation by Principal Timothy Russo from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation for their outstanding academics.

Although not continuing in the

National Merit Scholarship competition, these students placed among the top 3 percent of students across the country and are applauded for having demonstrated strong potential for academic success.

Honoring Internship Employers Employers who supported the 2018 summer internship program of the Northport High School Academy of Information Technology (AOIT) will be honored at the AOIT Trade Show on Thursday, Nov. 1, at 6:30 p.m. at Northport High School. Additionally, students will present details about their internship activities and discuss the skills, knowledge and experience they gained during the program. While this event aims to bring AOIT brings employers and students together to review their work and celebrate achievements made while interning, it is open to the public, or businesses seeking to hire interns.

As part of the requirements to earn an AOIT certificate upon graduation, the student

must work an internship in the IT field during their junior and senior years of high school. To complete the AOIT internship requirement, students work in areas such as computer programming, IT security, database administration, web design, networking and other digital workplace functions, while interacting with other employees and gaining work experience.

“The Academy of IT at Northport High School helps to prepare students for the challenges and rigors of higher education and, ultimately, a career in the everexpanding information technology industry,” said David Storch, district chairperson of science and technology education.

Employers participating

in the 2018 AOIT internship program include Applied Visions, Adelphi University, Brookhaven National Laboratory, Cisco, Cursive Security, Elwood and Northport School District technicians, IPS, SeniorNet and US Mortgage. In addition, students earned internship credit for their work in the Northport School District in various roles such as hardware technicians, help desk operators, software programmers and cybersecurity monitors.

After a week of spiritfilled activities, Elwood John H. Glenn High School students and the surrounding community came together on Saturday, October 13th to celebrate homecoming.

Despite the morning showers that initially postponed the parade, the sun came out for the proud procession of each class’ floats. This year’s theme revolved around seasons — summer, winter, spring and fall — in grade order.

The high school’s kickline and pep band headed up the parade, followed by the cheerleaders with a banner that proudly displayed the school’s newly acquired Blue Ribbon of Excellence.

Homecoming king and queen Patrick Ancewicz and Haley Eno passed by in a convertible, waving regally to the crowd, followed by each cheering class and their float, along with Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert, board of education members, administrators and district staff marching

along with pride.

During the Knight’s football game against Bayport-Blue Point, which ended in a victory, 48-21, the athletes played hard, receiving encouragement from the cheerleaders and enthusiastic community members in the stands.

After the pep band and kickline’s spirited halftime show, Dr. Bossert unveiled the school’s new Wall of Fame, and the first two inductees. The board of education was on hand as well, displaying the beautiful hand-made “Wall of Fame” signs crafted by students from reclaimed wood salvaged from the JGHS original bleachers.

The first inductee was Dr. Virginia Cancroft. Dr. Cancroft was a beloved, innovative member of the Elwood Community who served as the principal of Harley Avenue School for 24 years. She was honored for all of the life, love and dedication she gave to her students.

The second honoree was the late Master Sergeant

Christopher J. Raguso, who was a Class of 1997 alumnus, and a true hero.

Raguso lived a life of selfless dedication to others that ended too soon with his death during a military mission on March 15, 2018. Many of his friends and family attended the ceremony to honor him, and accepted the award on his behalf.

“We started the Elwood Wall of Fame to bring appropriate recognition to the men and women who made outstanding contributions to our school community,” said Dr. Bossert. “And these two inducted members will forever be honored and remembered as integral parts of the Elwood community as their plaques hang proudly on the Wall of Fame.”
