n October 17th, parents were invited into Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School in the Harborfields Central School District to share quality reading time with their child at the school’s annual Read-In. During the event, parents and students chose a comfortable location on the TJL campus to read together. Parents brought along some of their child’s favorite storybooks and a blanket to sit on while they read. A great time was had by all.

Time Of The Season By: Jamie Lynn Ryan And just like that, the holiday season is upon us. It seems like just last week we were soaking up the last few rays of sun at the beach, our toes in the sand, the waves crashing ashore… and now we’re busy digging out boots and scarves and stocking up on all things pumpkin spice. Such is the circle of life, the cycle of seasons and the wonder of Mother Nature.

Speaking of, “sources” claim this winter will be colder than normal, with

record snowfall yet again.

Shocking. Really, do we need to start obsessing about the first flake from now? It is what it is; it will be what it will be – the end.

Deal with it. Or don’t, and hibernate until March. The mass hysteria is beyond maddening, especially since most meteorologists can’t seem to predict the next day’s forecast, let alone an entire season’s worth. Just sayin’.

In the meantime, can we all just enjoy the cool, crisp air of Autumn? Play in the leaves, pick pumpkins and apples, check out a haunted

house or corn maze, create a unique Halloween costume, start planning your Thanksgiving menu ... Save the shovels for another day.

For now, anyway.

And as for those Christmas gift lists ... relax.

There’s something about shopping for the holidays during the actual season, don’t you think? Those who are already finished are missing out on the true spirit in their rush to cross tasks off the to-do list.

It’s not a race. It’s about putting some thought into it and enjoying the experience.

More than 700 educators and vendors came together at the 2014 Long Island Technology and Education Summit to learn about the best and most innovative ideas in education technology today. The summit was made possible

by Nassau BOCES, Western Suffolk BOCES and Eastern Suffolk BOCES, in partnership with lead sponsor Teq. This year’s summit had more than 30 workshops, in which attendees learned how to effectively use emerging technology to enhance the academic experience for students.

Topics included how to “flip” a classroom, enhancing school security through technology, creating a TV studio on a shoestring budget, and using Google apps. During two poster sessions, teachers from local school districts demonstrated web tools,

programming, iMovie for English language learners, and ebooks, just to name a few topics.

The first keynote speaker, Dr. Chris Dede, the Timothy E. Wirth Professor in Learning Technologies at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education, spoke about “the global knowledgebased economy” and “how we need personalized learning with a skilled person at the heart of it.”

Dr. Dede also discussed a new curriculum research project, EcoMuve, that is expanding the limits of the classroom through the use of 1:1 mobile devices to explore and learn. He went on to say that success in work depends on a person’s interpersonal skills.

Afternoon keynote speaker Bill Daggett, Founder and Chairman of the International Center for Leadership in Education, offered insights

into making students college and career ready.

He explained that data mining and artificial intelligence will become more sophisticated as people’s habits and experiences are monitored by computers.

Two Long Island educators, Christopher J. Pellettieri, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction of the Rockville Centre UFSD, and Alison Chiquitucto, kindergarten teacher from South Bay Elementary School in the West Babylon UFSD, were awarded the 2014 Fred Podolski Leadership and Innovation in Technology Award.

The award recognizes excellent work in successfully implementing new technology and strategies in classrooms to help improve student performance.

In spirit of autumn, kindergarten students at Washington Drive Primary School in the Harborfields Central School District participated in a hands-on gardening activity led by the Centerport Gardening Club on October 15th.

Every month, the Centerport Gardening Club visits and provides Washington Drive kindergarten students with fun, interactive gardening activities inspired by the holiday season. This

month, volunteers brought the class pumpkins, as well as flowers and other decorative materials for their project. Led by Gardening Club Chairman Lin Stanco, students first discussed features of a pumpkin and had the opportunity to taste a baked pumpkin seed.

During the activity, gardening volunteers guided the kindergarteners through the flower arrangement process.

and inserted them through the top of their pumpkin where the stem would normally be located.

Adding the final touches to their pumpkin flowerpots, students glued felt pieces to make a face of a jack-o’lantern.

“We try to give children an opportunity to enjoy nature by giving them an inside look at it in a way they can relate,” Stanco said.

Women’s Networking Day Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone and members of the Town Council invite residents to the Town’s Thirteenth Annual Women’s Networking Day and Awards Ceremony, which this year carries the theme “Pulse Of A Woman: Vibrant And Alive.”

The October 28th event, under the auspices of the Town’s Division of Women’s Services, will include more than 50 jewelry, beauty, wellness and informational booths, where experts will provide attendees with information, advice and demonstrations on a range of topics.

The Women’s Division presents this annual

event in order to help the public receive important information and learn about services offered by the Town’s numerous notfor-profit organizations.

Another purpose is to increase the exposure of the Women’s Advisory Council, an association of prominent not-forprofit agencies that deal primarily with substantive women’s issues.

A highlight of the day should be a performance

by Long Island vocalist, songwriter and producer JayCee. Her bold signature voice embraces the youthful freshness of the present with the true effervescence of America’s rich musical

past, captivating audiences with classic standards, hit Broadway show tunes, contemporary favorites and her own originals.

The Town Board will also be honoring five exceptional women during the awards ceremony.

The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Larkfield, 507 Larkfield Rd. General admission is $12 ($10 for seniors) and includes lunch and raffles and a Ladies Day gift (supplies are limited).

Scholar Artists Merit Award: Max Novick a Film Production student from Roslyn UFSD has earned the Scholar Artist Merit Award and plans on attending film school when he graduates. Max says, “My long term goals include writing, directing, and producing major studio feature films made with an independent integrity and quality.”

Rachel Donders, a Theatre student from Northport-East Northport UFSD has earned the Scholar Artist Merit Award and reflects on her time at LIHSA as giving her the opportunity to

grow tremendously as an actress. “LIHSA has not only helped me to grow as an actress, but as a person, The teachers are really supportive and want you to succeed,” says Rachel.

Casey Landman, a Theatre student from Roslyn UFSD has earned the Scholar Artists Merit Award. “I found myself surrounded by the most warm-hearted, openminded people. The school’s environment allows you to make a mistake and not feel as though you committed the deadliest of sins. I’m proud of who I am today because of LIHSA,” says Casey.

Sponsored by the Long Island Arts Alliance (LIAA) and Newsday, the ScholarArtist Award honors students for outstanding academic achievement and excellence in the arts. Scholar-Artists are profiled in Newsday and honored at LIAA’s annual gala. They are also eligible for scholarships to several Long Island colleges.

Elena Brosseau, a Film Production student, is a Scholar Artist from the Comsewogue UFSD who credits the school with encouraging her interests in filmmaking skills and for showing her how she can make a career out of it. In order to help feed needy Long Islanders, Boy Scout Troop 125 collected donations of peanut butter and jelly at the Commack ShopRite and King Kullen supermarkets on Saturday, October 11th. All cash donations collected that day were used to purchase additional peanut butter and jelly.

Despite rain throughout the day that kept some shoppers home, the boys collected a total of 1,118-pounds of peanut butter and jelly. The

collection was donated to the Troop’s sponsor, Commack United Methodist Church, which has a Peanut Butter and Jelly Gang that meets on the first Saturday of every month to make in excess of 1,000 sandwiches. All of the sandwiches are then delivered to St. Anne’s Church in Brentwood and distributed to the hungry on Long Island.

Exploring Meaningful Activities The Empire State Information Fluency Continuum (IFC) was developed by the New York City School Library System to provide assessment and benchmark skills for grades K-12. School librarians across New York State are utilizing IFC because it empowers students to follow their sense of wonder to learn the way the world works.

Eastern Suffolk BOCES Administrative Coordinator for the

School Library System (SLS) Gail Barraco invited Mary Zdrojewski, school librarian from Scio CSD, located in Allegany County, NY, to present at a recent school library liaison meeting. She said, “Mary came highly recommended because she is very versed in the Information Fluency Continuum. Instead of getting someone that just talks about the theory, I really wanted someone who is currently implementing it.”

Ms. Zdrojewski presented Thinkers, Explorers, Citizens: Engaging Students with the Empire State Information Fluency Continuum. She said, “There is a big change in how we think about learning. It used to be content based. We have shifted things from what students can do, to benchmarking what students want to be. We want them to go into the world using the skills they learned and be digital

citizens.”

IFU uses an inquiry and learning curriculum research model that provides active learning through a spiral framework of instruction. As students wonder, investigate, synthesize, express, and review, they become WISER. Zdrojewski created Wiser the Owl, a children’s book that incorporates the cycle of inquiry and learning for her elementary students.

Mary uses songs, board

games, and a variety of other strategies in her school library that create engaging and meaningful learning. At the SLS meetings, attendees played Librarian Bingo and made “Wonder Cans” - a craft project that Mary created. She said, “The Wonder Can is a device I use to spark questions and investigation. I hope all the librarians take away practical information from this presentation and think, ‘I can do that in my

library.’”

School librarian Teri from the Babylon Elementary School said, “I am going to go back to my school and use all of this, and I know that for a fact.

The activities that Mary is showing us are simple, easy to do, and very engaging.

I really like the Wiser the Owl book. She created it so I don’t have to rephrase it and the students love to sing.”

In honor of School Board Recognition Month, students from Oldfield Middle School in the Harborfields Central School District offered their thanks and gifts of gratitude to the Board of

Education at the October 15th business meeting.

Members of the school’s student government publicly thanked the Board for all they do and their dedication to the students of Harborfields.

As a special thank-you, the students presented the Board members with a new Keurig coffee machine for their “late night meetings,” as well as special coffee mugs with a photo of the school.

Standing Up For Safe Schools The Oldfield Middle School GSA (Gay-Straight Alliance) club sponsored its first National Coming Out Day on October 10th to stand up against bullying.

This day sent a strong message that bullying toward any individual or group of people is not acceptable. Oldfield Middle School faculty, staff members and students had the opportunity to wear a rainbow ribbon pin to show their support of the day and sign their names to a large “safe-space/antibullying” banner, which proclaims OMS as a “safe space” for all students. This banner

is proudly displayed near the entrance of the school building.

Sixth-grade student Daniel Benson expressed his reason to support “National Coming Out Day.” “All students should be comfortable with who they are,” he said. “We should respect everyone.”

For the past 26 years, Gay-Straight Alliances have participated in “National Coming Out Day” in an effort to make their school communities safe and create a welcoming environment for all students and their

families regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. Creating a safe environment for all students and their families is a priority of the Harborfields Central School District, as evidenced by their participation in events such as this.

“Our goal is to create a safe environment for everyone,” OMS Guidance Counselor Jennifer McCaffrey said. “We want to let students know we accept them, their family and friends for who they are.”

Lending A Helping Hand rainy weather, community residents attended the event and volunteers, including Glenn ASL students, were ready to provide their assistance.

Elwood-John H. Glenn High School ASL teacher Nicole Correia, along with her students Michael Sgambati, Jacob Pagan, Casey Gross, Jenna Yeisley, Victoria Shanerman and Olivia Prohaske, volunteered in the packing and delivery station where

they raised and donated $154 in tips to the Mill Neck Manor organization.

In addition, parents Mrs. Prohaske and Mrs. Pagan also kindly volunteered their time at the event.

“The students had an opportunity to see what the deaf community is all about,” Correia said. “They were also able to use their sign language skills when necessary.”

On October 17th, parents were invited into Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School in the Harborfields Central School District to share quality reading time with their child at the school’s annual Read-In. During the event,

Healthy Eating Day National Eating Healthy Day is Wednesday, November 5th, and the American Heart Association wants people to listen the advice of generations of mothers: Eat your vegetables (and fruit).

Americans typically consume about half their recommended daily servings of fruits and vegetables. The American Heart Association recommends eating eight or more fruit and vegetable servings every day. For an average adult consuming 2,000 calories daily, that

means about 4 ½ cups of fruits and vegetables a day.

According to the American Heart Association, fruits and vegetables are high in vitamins, minerals and fiber, and low in saturated fat and calories. Most fruits and vegetables also have no or little sodium, and eating a variety of fruits and vegetables may help you control your weight and your blood pressure.

While heart disease and stroke are leading causes of death and disability for all Americans, more than 80 percent of risk factors

for heart disease and stroke are preventable through behaviors like making better food choices, getting regular exercise, keeping a healthy weight and not smoking.

The AHA is offering a free fruits and vegetable resource guide to help people incorporate more fruits and vegetables in their diet. Association Wins Grant Family & Children’s Association, one of Long Island’s largest nonprofit human service organizations, has just been awarded a new fiveyear “Solutions To End Homelessness Program” (SEHP) grant totaling $193,934 per year.

Funded by the NY State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance, this grant will support Family & Children’s Association’s efforts to provide transitional living services, including housing and independent living skills training, to the approximately 1,500 homeless youth living on Long Island.

This grant will further enable Family & Children’s Association to: • provide counseling, case management and skill building to youth at risk for homelessness; • continue to accept youth in crisis at

its 24/7 emergency shelter; • offer respite to youth dealing with abuse, neglect or challenging home lives; • provide food, stable housing, independent living skills training, financial counseling, and a structured home environment for up to 18 months at its transitional residence, located in Freeport; • develop job opportunities for youth who move onto independent living environments to ensure that they can afford to live on Long Island as selfsupporting adults.

Job opportunities and adequate training for careers that can support a Long Island lifestyle will keep formerly homeless youth from becoming homeless adults, thus

breaking the cycle of poverty.

Family & Children’s Association, with community-based programs scattered across Long Island, has a long and successful history of assisting at-risk youth.

According to President/ CEO Jeffrey L. Reynolds, Ph.D., “this grant will allow us to continue to offer safety and shelter to our youth while committing to their future success by offering them skills training, educational incentives and opportunities for successful transition to independent living. We provide the stability many of these young people need in order to mature into selfsupporting adulthood.”
