Long Island’s largest food drive event, the 7th Annual Bethpage Turkey Drive to benefit Island Harvest Food Bank, will take place on Wednesday, November 18th, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Bethpage Federal Credit Union’s headquarters located at 899 South Oyster Bay Road in Bethpage.

Long Islanders are asked to drop off frozen turkeys, non-perishable food items (except those in glass containers), supermarket gift cards or cash donations. These donations will go directly to Island Harvest which will then help supply Thanksgiving holiday meals to the more than 300,000 hungry Long Islanders through its distribution network of 570 food pantries, soup kitchens and other feeding programs on Long Island.

Veterans to Be Honored In commemoration of Veterans Day 2015, American Legion Greenlawn Post 1244 will conduct its annual Veterans Day Observance at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 11th, at the Greenlawn Memorial Park Monument at Pulaski Road and Broadway in Greenlawn.

The ceremony, which has been conducted annually for many years by the Greenlawn Post, is attended by many veterans, elected officials and members of the public.

“What we now call ‘Veterans Day’ began as ‘Armistice Day.’ It is historically significant that this day continues to be observed on the 11th day of the 11th month, and at

11:00 a.m., the very hour, in 1918, that the guns of World War I fell silent.” said Dennis Madden, Post Commander of American Legion Greenlawn Post 1244.

“Veterans Day is a time to honor not just those who have fought for us in battle, but, in fact, all of the outstanding men and women who served in our nation’s Armed Forces since our founding more than 239 years ago. Not all veterans have seen war, but a common bond they share is an oath in which they expressed their willingness to die defending this nation.

Today, thousands of Americans are serving in uniform. They sacrifice in the war on terror and

in hundreds of locations around the globe so we may remain free. They, too, are veterans, Madden said.

The American Legion is the nation’s largest wartime veteran’s organization.

Founded in 1919 in the aftermath of World War I, the delegates to the first National Convention in Minneapolis broke from business sessions to parade down a main street in a heavy snowstorm at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11th to mark the first anniversary of the armistice.

Staying Cyber Safe In recognition of national bullying prevention awareness month, students at Oldfield Middle School in the Harborfields Central School District participated in an Internet safety and cyber bullying assembly led by Deputy Rory R. Forrestal from the Computer Crimes Section of the Suffolk County Police Department on October 16th.

During the presentation, students heard an ageappropriate message about ways to be safe on the Internet and the horrific impact cyber bullying can have on peoples’ lives.

Deputy Forrestal shared stories about young adults who chose to end their lives as a result of cyber bullying and the various media outlets cyber bullying can occur.

In addition, students were educated on the legal consequences and New York State laws in place related to harassment and falsely reporting information that could harm one or more people.

To conclude the assembly, students were afforded to opportunity to ask questions about information discussed during the presentation.

The daughter of Colombian immigrants, Officer Delgado learned English

in ESL classes, and went on to graduate from Deer Park High School. She attended the New York College of Health Professions and Farmingdale State College, where she majored in dental hygiene. After working as a dental hygienist in a pediatric dental practice, six years ago she joined the Suffolk County Police Department, where she was assigned to a sector car responsible for Huntington and Greenlawn before becoming the Second

New dates and locations have been set for the next two workshops seeking public input in the process leading to the formation of an integrated land use, circulation and infrastructure plan for the Melville Employment Center.

On Monday, November 9th, the topics will be circulation and transportation at the workshop now scheduled for 7 to 9 p.m. at the Melville Fire Department, 531 Sweet Hollow Road Melville. This replaces the workshop originally scheduled for October 21st. There will be a presentation followed by breakout tables for small discussion groups.

On December 1st, also from 7 to 9 p.m. at West Hollow Middle School, 250 Old East Neck Road, Melville, the topic will be community design and aesthetics, and the format will be different:

an “open house” style with large-scale visuals placed at different stations, followed by a discussion. This replaces the workshop originally scheduled for November 17th.

The workshops will be conducted by the consultant team of BFJ Planning, Urbanomics and Parsons Brinckerhoff, which the Town hired earlier this year on the recommendation of its Melville Plan Advisory Committee.

The committee - composed of representatives of Melville area property owners, real estate brokers, community service providers and community groups - selected the team after reviewing responses to a request for proposals

issued last year. Under the terms of its contract with the Town, the consultant team must conduct up to five workshops as it puts together the plan over the course of the next year.

The team held the first two workshops June 2nd and September 29th.

The broad mandate for the plan is to examine the many complex issues facing the Melville area and to define an action agenda for future development and redevelopment.

The committee had asked people who work in the Melville Employment Center to take an online survey.

That survey has been replaced by a new online survey, which seeks input from Melville residents.

Precinct’s community liaison officer. She regularly communicates with community leaders to help organize numerous community events and she has spoken on Univision about bridging the gap between the police department and the Hispanic community.

Belinda Alvarez-Groneman, a retired detective and special assistant to the Suffolk County Police commissioner, delivered the keynote address. Ms. AlvarezGroneman joined the SCPD in 1981 as a community service aide and became a police officer four years later.

She was cited five times for outstanding police work before becoming the first woman to join the Commissioner’s staff.

She served as president of the Suffolk County Police Officers’ Hispanic Society from 1989-1993. She has been active with many community groups.

Currently, she serves as president of Pronto of Long Island Inc. and chairs both the Suffolk County Community College Foundation Board and the Town of Islip Youth Board, as well as serving on the staff of U.S. Rep Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley).

In her remarks, Ms. Alvarez-Groneman challenged the audience, especially the students being honored, “to take on the responsibility of helping others.”

Musical selections were performed by the Huntington High School chamber choir and Lesley Rebecca Garay.

PB&J Collection

As part of their commitment to serving others, the Boy Scouts of Troop 125 collected donations of peanut butter and jelly at the Commack ShopRite and King Kullen supermarkets on Saturday, October 17th.

The boys collected a total of 1,232-pounds of peanut butter and jelly and $435.00 in cash that will be used to purchase additional PB&J. All proceeds of the drive were donated to the

Troop’s sponsor, Commack United Methodist Church, which has a “Peanut Butter and Jelly Gang” that meets on the first Saturday of every month to make in excess of 1,000 sandwiches.

All of the sandwiches are then delivered to St. Anne’s Church in Brentwood and distributed to Long Islanders in need.

Mercy Center held its fifth annual run/walk over the bridge for homeless teens at Smith Point Park on Saturday, October 17th.

Participants from all over the Island came out to support the cause and enjoy the beautiful and unique 3.1 mile course over the bridge. The most senior runner was 79 and the youngest was 6; both belong to the running club North Country Road Warriors.

Finned Wit & Wisdom By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Here I come to save the day, yet again, with my witty observations on life from within the confines of my bowl. The Human, it seems, is busy getting herself ready for a wedding – one, I might add, that I was not invited to. And here I had my bowtie and top hat all picked out for the occasion. How rude.

I suppose this means my dinner will be late too.

What does a fish have to do to maintain a steady feeding schedule? Sometimes it’s twice a day, sometimes once… four flakes, five… sometimes only a couple when I knock the rest down to the gravel with my fins, never to be seen again.

Speaking of which, these

late-night feedings have to stop. Back and forth, I swim my laps, anxiously waiting for my Human to arrive.

Eventually, after days of starvation {10 hours or so} I give up hope, putting myself to bed with no supper. But wait, is that a light I see?

I groggily press my nose against the glass, dimly making out the shadow of my Human, apologizing for getting home so late.

I sleepily bounce from one branch of my plant to another, aimlessly chomping at imaginary flakes, before putting myself back to bed, thoroughly unsatisfied.

I suppose I’m always hungry though. I have no concept of time, or quantity.

As many times as I find flakes fluttering into my bowl, I will

greedily inhale them, barely pausing to chew in between.

From my experience, you have to savor these feeding times, since you never know when the next one may come around.

Sort of like the Mets and their quest for the World Series. I haven’t been around long, but I hear this is a pretty rare occurrence. Me, I tend to root for the Marlins.

Us fish gotta stick together, after all. But, I suppose I’m a New Yorker, officially. Maybe my Human will buy me some blue and orange gravel so I can root, root, root for the home team…you know, on our trip to the pet store that I’ve been promised since August.

First off, I want to apologize for the morbidity already displayed one sentence into this essay. If you’re looking to read about average summer vacation stories, or the day someone won their first trophy, I would advise you to stop reading. I don’t write this to receive sob stories from countless people, or even gain sympathetic condolences. I just want to put life into perspective. I want to inform you readers of the true and raw meaning of life, and what many people have forgotten over the years while in the midst of everyday life.

The pursuit of happiness is defined as a fundamental right mentioned in the Declaration of Independence to freely pursue joy and live life in a way that makes you happy. I think many people

have forgotten this idea, and it saddens me to feel the need to write this, informing people on how to truly live.

I lost a dear friend of mine recently. She was a family friend, but I definitely considered her family - like an aunt. She was diagnosed with cancer about a year ago, and it only took a few months for the cancer to completely demolish her body. It’s not fair how she died so suddenly and irrationally. Life works mysteriously like that. I can’t quite put into words the feelings I encountered the day she died.

But that’s a whole other story. One regret I have whilst she was still alive was not laughing and smiling a little bit more when I was still in her presence.

I’m a glass half full type of person. I like to see things in positive perspectives. Life is way too short to be anything but happy.

In my eyes, if you have a roof over your head and food on the table, you’re lucky. The countless complaints that our society has adapted to consider “normal” is absurd… Now, I’m not going to lie and say I’ve never complained before. Hell, I probably complain a little too much. But luckily, I have the decency to step back and view the bigger picture in terms of the pursuit of happiness and pure joy and all of that cheerful nonsense.

Live a little. Don’t let the little things bring you down. Be grateful for family and love and joy and laughter and all that good stuff that doesn’t cost a penny. Happiness is a free commodity. Only God knows when your life is coming to an end, so take advantage of every day. Say your “I love you’s” and give your biggest hugs and don’t regret a thing. Life is way too short - I can’t stress this enough.

Senior Advocate Schedule The Suffolk County Office for the Aging’s Fall 2015 Senior Advocate Schedule has been released. Senior advocates are County representatives who come out to the local community and assist seniors with information gathering, completion of eligibility or recertification applications and referrals to appropriate community agencies.

Senior Advocates meet with interested seniors aged 60 and over at regularlyscheduled times in specific locations throughout the community. This fall, they are visiting the following locations in the Town of Huntington: • Huntington Library,

338 Main Street, Huntington: Monday, November 16th from 9 to 11 a.m.

• Huntington Senior Nutrition Center, 423 Park Avenue, Huntington: Wednesdays, October 28th, November 25th and December 16th from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.

• Paumanack Village I & II, 650 Paumanack Village Drive, Greenlawn: Tuesday, December 15th from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

KAPS FOR KIDS - Local Long Island based submarine veterans made one of four yearly visits to pediatric patients at Good Samaritan Hospital. As part of their “Kaps 4 Kids” program, the veterans visit children’s units in local hospitals where they share the history of their battalion. More than 20 children at Good Sam received a cap and certificate of participation.

Meeting Set An informational meeting will be held on November 12th at 7 p.m. in the Elwood Middle School auditorium to discuss the district’s search for a new superintendent. This meeting was originally scheduled for October 22nd.

Due to the pending retirement of Mr. Peter Scordo, the Elwood Board of Education has begun its search for its new superintendent.

On September 10th, the Elwood Board of Education voted to enlist Western Suffolk BOCES to facilitate the search process.

Western Suffolk BOCES is very experienced and has a history of success.

Western Suffolk BOCES also provides this service for no additional cost.

Community and staff members are being asked and encouraged to provide their input through an online survey, available now through November 9, 2015. Areas such as rating the importance of a potential candidate’s qualifications and personal characteristics, as well as his/her abilities and experience with school staffing, instruction, board relations, district operations and finance will be polled. The survey can be accessed by visiting the district’s website at www.elwood.k12.ny.us and clicking on “Community

Survey” under “Headlines.”

You may also obtain a paper copy of the survey at the district office or the Elwood Public Library.

Representatives from a variety of district and community stakeholder groups will also have an opportunity to meet individually with the search facilitators this month to provide additional input.

The Board of Education will greatly value and consider the stakeholder input and community survey results in their selection of the new superintendent.

Recruitment efforts will be extensive, and will conclude by April 2016.

November was designated as National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month by President Ronald Reagan in 1983. Since then, the recognition was enhanced to also honor the Caregivers who aid Alzheimer’s patients. In honor of this national event, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) is reminding everyone that nearly 60,000 Long Islanders suffer from the disease each day.

Alzheimer’s disease is a degenerative brain condition that affects

cognitive function and consequently the ability to perform day to day tasks.

At the time of President Reagan’s designation, fewer than two million Americans suffered from the disease. Today, that number has soared to more than 5.4 million people. Alzheimer’s care can be very costly both for patients and their families, who often serve as the primary caregivers. There are presently more than 15 million people caring for Alzheimer’s and dementia patients throughout the

country. This includes not only assisted living professionals, but also children, spouses/partners, friends and neighbors.

In 2015, Alzheimer’s and other dementias will cost the nation $226 million in both medical and general care services.

In an effort to increase awareness and support for Long Islanders and their families who are affected by the disease, ADRC is hosting two events in November. This includes the organization’s Second Annual Give from

the Heart “Athletes for Endurance” competition, which is being held at gyms across Long Island throughout the month of November. This event promotes physical fitness, considered a vital element to fighting dementia, by challenging endurance athletes to do as many push-ups as possible. This year’s series is in memory of Dorothy C. Camilleri, who passed away in 2013 after battling Alzheimer’s disease. To sponsor a team or individual, or to make a donation, please visit the

“It was wonderful to see the excitement on the students’ faces when they saw the big trucks and then were able to climb on them. National Grid is extremely proud to partner with DDI through our Cinderella program.

We wanted to utilize this opportunity to have an interactive event with the students and give them a chance to get up close with some of our vehicles and our field crews,” said Kiel Costella, Community

& Customer Program Manager at National Grid.

For more than forty years, our Cinderella program has helped to revitalize local communities not on Long Island, Queens, Brooklyn and Staten Island.

Through this program, National Grid has been able to offer revitalization grants to encourage non-profit organizations and community groups to restore buildings throughout Long Island communities.

This is just one of the many programs at National Grid, along with countless volunteer efforts under National Grid’s employee volunteer program, Power to Serve, that illustrate National Grid’s commitment to improving the quality of life on Long Island. The Cinderella Grant awarded to DDI helped fund some of the needed improvements to the school. The parking lot had become quite a safety hazards for the students, parents, and faculty and was repaved with the grant. Safety is National Grid’s number one priority and they are pleased to help make that kind of improvement to the school.

Students at Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI) climbed on National Grid trucks to see how they operate for the Touch-A-Truck program which, came to their Huntington campus.

This program gives the students the ability to engage, see, and the touch the equipment and to have some fun.

DDI, a non-profit, and National Grid have a strong partnership and have been working together strengthening children’s education.

Students enjoyed the Dig-It which they could sit in and pull on the levers while wearing a National Grid hard hat. National Grid employees were on hand with their trucks and they allowed the students to explore and interact with some of the equipment and safety gear they use on a daily basis.

Students also watched National Grid workers operate the vacuum truck which makes lots of noise and vacuums up rocks; workers use it to excavate in sensitive areas. Children with developmental disabilities and autism have an easier time understanding what they can see and touch, while having fun.

Finalists Mentored Seventeen high school students mentored by faculty at Stony Brook University have been selected as regional finalists in the 2015 Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology – one of the top nationwide research competitions for high school researchers. Stony Brook University mentored a total of 51 semifinalists in the competition, marking a University record. The results rank the University among the institutional leaders who mentor high school researchers from Long Island and around the country.

The regional finalists, selected from the group of 466 national semifinalists, will advance to one of six regional competitions held over three consecutive weekends in November. Winners of the regional events will then advance to the National Finals held at George Washington University in December where $500,000 in scholarships will be awarded, including two top awards of $100,000.
