Friday, November 8 in its Huntington store at 313 New York Avenue. All nine poets are represented in a new anthology, Best of the Best American Poetry: 25 Years, published by Scribners, which Lehman edited. On Saturday, November 9, the Festival continues with a full day of events at the Walt Whitman Birthplace, 246 Old Walt Whitman Road, Huntington Station. This will run from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and feature interactive seminars, a roundtable discussion in the Birthplace’s interpretive center, and group poetry readings both in the morning and the afternoon. Cost to participate will vary; a day pass ($100; $50 for students) includes all events—or one may choose to attend just a seminar ($35), a roundtable ($15) or a reading ($15).
Food trucks will be parked nearby during break times. Afterward, the poets party on Saturday night with a Grand Finale, from 7:00 to 9:30 p.m. in the Center Court of the newly-refurbished Walt Whitman Shops on Route 110 in Huntington Station. Featured will be additional readings, several musical interludes, and a preview unveiling of a new statue of America’s immortal poet Walt Whitman. Admission to this event is $35. “The Festival Within” promises to be the most significant Long Island poetry event of the year. A preliminary schedule is attached. Upon reading a Newsday article highlighting the demand for food, the 11-year-old was shocked to learn that many Long Island families would not be able to enjoy special Thanksgiving dinners. Inspired to take action and make a difference, she wrote a letter to friends and raised enough money to buy at least 100 turkeys… in just two days. Greta is a founding member of Island Harvest’s Student Leadership Council, which empowers future leaders to increase awareness of issues related to hunger on Long Island. With an assortment of gourmet foods and delightful cocktails, Island Harvest Food Bank’s 20th Annual “Taste of the Harvest Celebration” is sure to be an evening to remember. Island Harvest, Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization, will use the proceeds of this celebration, its premier fundraiser, to provide critical food support to a network of almost 570 food pantries, soup kitchens and other local programs that offer food assistance to the more than 300,000 Long Islanders—over 110,000 of them children—who face hunger each and every day. Rotary Address Huntington Town Clerk Jo-Ann Raia recently addressed the Rotary Club of Huntington’s weekly meeting. Ms. Raia outlined the various functions of the Town Clerk’s Department and brought numerous handouts as examples of the various licenses and permits issued by the

held at the North Babylon Library, Deer Park Library, South Huntington Library and Town of Babylon Spangle Drive Senior Center. The cards are good for the senior discounts on the Suffolk County bus, as well as other County and local discounts. More outreach programs are being planned for the
office. Ms. Raia also spoke about some of the historic manuscripts and books which are housed in the climate-controlled Town Clerk’s Archives. “The highlight of my presentations are always the displays of some original documents, i.e. the 1653 Native American Deed, the Revolutionary
War Claims, the book of Court Records from 1659 and the book of Births, Deaths and Marriages from 1847” stated Ms. Raia. “ It has been a privilege and an honor for me to speak to various organizations about the responsibilities of my office.”

Forever An Original By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Albert Capraro, Lindenhurst High School Class of 1961 graduate, Bicentennial Designer of the Year for 1976 and personal designer of choice to none other than First Lady Betty Ford, passed away on October 8th, 2013 following a brief illness. I consider myself lucky to have made his acquaintance and privileged to have interviewed him for a profile for this very column several years ago. Following are excerpts from my original piece, published October 11th, 2006 ... Mr. Capraro’s path to success began to take shape way back in high school while walking the halls of Lindy. His influences ranged from several members of the art department to his beloved guidance counselor, all of whom nurtured his already-outstanding talent for both fashion and film, even going so far
as to attend the “fashion shows” and “movie premieres” he would put on at his home. After graduating from the prestigious Parsons School of Design, Mr. Capraro landed his first job working with a French designer on Park Avenue. He then moved on to a position with noted designer Joberie, headquartered on Seventh Avenue - Fashion Avenue. From there, he catapulted to the opportunity of a lifetime, working with Oscar de la Renta - his “mentor” - with whom he flourished for eight glorious years. Mr. Capraro eventually started up his own label, of which his first collection was quite a success. As he dryly observed, “I was an ‘overnight’ sensation after ten years.” However, it was exactly this achievement which provided the necessary steppingstone from which there would be no turning back. After reading a favorable review of his clothing line, First
Lady Betty Ford invited Mr. Capraro to a personal consultation at the White House. And the rest, as they say, is history. Through the years, he designed for a vast collection of women, including the likes of Julie Andrews, Marlo Thomas, Sophia Loren, Barbara Walters, Marissa Tomei and several of the Miss Americas. In 1976, he accomplished the “hat trick” of being the simultaneous designer-of-choice for Miss America 1976, First Lady Betty Ford and American Ambassador Ann Armstrong, helping to crown him with his most-cherished title of Bicentennial Designer of the Year for 1976. For a man whose designs now qualify as “vintage” on E-bay; for someone who used to regularly mingle with all walks of stars, he comes away from the whole experience with one sentiment that stands above the rest: “Ego doesn’t work.” As a result, Mr. Capraro
finds himself equally comfortable designing costumes for a Hicksville High School theatre production – which he has done several times – as he did while living the lavish life of limousines, champagne, starstudded galas and black-tie affairs ... all words which are still “music to (his) ears.” The man who was originally inspired to design by Princess Grace’s wedding gown and who recently donated the original mannequin and about twenty of his designs worn by the First Lady to the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum in Grand Rapids, Michigan, now lives by the simplest of mottos: “Pursue and persist ... Love what you’re doing.” What a lovely person. What outstanding accomplishments. And to think it began all those years ago in the halls of Lindy High School. His is a story that deserves to be shared. And admired by all.
On November 2nd, participants will run for their lives to escape the zombie apocalypse at Brady Park in Massapequa Park to benefit Special Olympics New York! The rUNDEAD is a 5K run, in which runners start off with a flag belt and three flags representing their lifelines. Zombies will be stationed throughout the course attempting to take these one at a time. Once a runner loses all three flags, they are “dead” and the zombies have won. While the runner can still finish the race, they will not be eligible for awards or prizes. Runners can register in two different ways – the competitive “Fast Food” group or the noncompetitive “All You Can Eat” group. You can register online as an individual or a team in advance for $40 per person at www.therundead. org or sign up that day for $60. Each runner will receive access to the course, race day festivities and an official rUNDEAD race day t-shirt. Those who do not wish

Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone and the Town Council marked the Town’s 12th Annual Women’s Networking Day by recognizing five distinguished women for their contributions to the Town. More than 400 people attended the October 7th event, run under the auspices of the Town’s Division of Women’s Services and carrying the theme “People… Passion… Purpose… A Prism of Possibilities.” The event, at the Meville Marriott, was sponsored by GEICO and Wells Fargo Advisors. The day was highlighted by presentations to the honorees, each chosen by a member of the Town Board for her achievements in making Huntington a better place to live. “Each of these women deserves to be commended individually for the ways in which they have contributed to Huntington’s outstanding quality of life,” Supervisor Petrone said. “Taken together, they impressively demonstrate the significant contributions women have made and continue to make in our community.” The honorees were: Sherry Pavone of Northport. A retired New York City police officer and a former city school teacher, Pavone has a long resume of involvement in the community, including the Northport-East Northport School district S.E.P.T.A., the Northport Village Millennium Committee, the Northport Village Parks Committee, the Town of Huntington Skateboard Park Committee that successfully facilitated the Town’s first skateboard park, Huntington Youth Development Agency and the Northport Harbor Water Quality Protection Committee. She is chair of the Huntington Women’s Democratic
Initiative and a member of the Eleanor Roosevelt Legacy, which brought professional training and funding to women running for public office. She was recognized by Supervisor Petrone. Lisa Gaines of Huntington Station. After the tragic death of her seven year-old daughter, Victoria, in a July 4th, 2012 boating accident, Gaines became a passionate advocate for stricter and more enforceable boating safety laws, including one proposal, called Victoria’s
Law, that would require all boaters to complete a boating safety course and set mandatory marine safety, law enforcement and first responder guidelines for all major aquatic events. She and her family have formed the Victoria’s Love Children’s Foundation, a not-forprofit charitable organization that raises funds to benefit St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. Gaines serves on the Town of Huntington’s Boating Education & Safety Sub Committee and has served on the steering committee for the Greater Huntington Council of Yacht and Boating Club’s First Annual Huntington Safe Boating Week. She was recognized by Councilman Mark Cuthbertson. Andrea Golinsky of Huntington Station. Golinsky is marking her 40th year as a member of the Huntington
Community First Aid Squad and has served as crew leader, day captain, deputy chief, chief and longtime public information officer. Golinsky sits on both the Town of Huntington Recruitment and Retention Committee and the Suffolk County Recruitment and Retention Committee. After years of sitting in on meetings as a citizen observer, she was appointed to the Huntington Station Business Improvement District board. She was recognized by Councilwoman Susan A. Berland. Brenda Leigh Johnson of Huntington. Johnson, a longtime executive with Dale Carnegie & Associates, is a trustee at the Walt Whitman Birthplace, and the current president of the Kiwanis Club of Huntington. She was one of the founding members of the Long Island Alzheimer’s Foundation and sat on the board of directors for Friends of Old Westbury Gardens. Johnson grew up in Cold Spring Harbor. She was recognized by Councilman Mark Mayoka. The Rev. Glorious Artis of Huntington Station. With her husband, the Rev. Jerry Artis, she serves as spiritual leader of the Love of Christ Fellowship Church. For the past 14 years, she has worked with children as educator and mentor for children with special needs at Flower Hill Primary School. Her professional career includes her honorable service to our country as a staff sergeant in the Air Force, a research professional for Chase Bank and as an executive assistant for Bankers Trust. She was recognized by Councilman Eugene Cook. The Women’s Division presents this annual event to help the public receive important information and learn about services offered by the Town’s numerous nonprofit organizations.

The Elwood Union Free School District is proud to announce that high school senior Ryan Harrigan has been named to the NAfME All-National Chorus. Ryan will join more than 670 of the most musically talented and skilled high school students in the United States to perform at a gala concert on October 30, 2013 in Nashville, Tennessee. Ryan is very active in the John H. Glenn music
department, where he is the Tenor Section leader in Concert Choir and a member of the select Chamber Choir. He plays the trombone in Concert band and Jazz Ensemble, and he is a drum major this year in Marching Band. He is also a member of the music theory class and the Tri-M Music Honor Society. Ryan’s hard work and talents have led him to such honors as the SCMEA Chorus, NYSCAME-All-
County Chorus, All-State Chorus, and finally, the honor of participating in the All-National Chorus. On a recent Saturday, the SJB Crew Team competed at the Brickyard 5000. The day started out like any other, with the first few races running smoothly. As the day wore on, the wind picked up and the already rough Hudson River turned into a series of veritable tsunamis. My race, the Varsity Eight, the last heat of the day, was running right on time. The course had been shortened, and I was to compete head to head with my little brother. As we paddled out, I knew I could not let him win for the sake of bragging rights. We knew the water was rough, but we also knew we were ready. As we spun the boat and got underway, the crack of the oars hitting
the water signaled the start of our very brief rivalry. In that moment, I wanted nothing more than to beat my brother. After the first few hundred meters, we were ahead and gaining, but after a few minutes, that all changed. As we slightly altered our course, a huge wave crashed over our port side, flooding the boat. We were still afloat, but the added water weight made every stroke less productive. With every stroke, my brother’s boat was gaining and we were taking on more water. Coming into the final two hundred meters, we were still in the lead, but barely. It was close, but we had them by about a boat length. Then, our Cox had us suddenly stop rowing.
From the back of the boat, I couldn’t make out what she was saying. One by one, I saw the boys in front of me jump out of the boat and into the Hudson. Panicked, I jumped out too. Our boat had sunk, and we were floating in the middle of one of the roughest waters in New York. As we watched my brother swiftly finish, we realized that we had lost. Sure, it was on mere luck, but he was the one toting the Gold Medal. Embarrassed, we boarded the Haverstraw Fire Department’s boat. I had lost, to my brother no less. Even though I was sad we didn’t finish, I was happy at least one of the Cianciulli boys was bringing home the gold for SJB Crew.

Music Festival. Students Lyz Mortati and Kelsey Hackett were also selected to perform in the festival, as well. These students were chosen based on their NYSSMA scores and teacher recommendations and will perform in early March at St. Anthony’s High School. Junior Solomon Choi, in addition to attending the All-State Conference,
was also chosen to perform the Rococo Variations for Cello and Orchestra by Tchaikovsky with the North Shore Symphony on Saturday November 16th. The performance is at Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK High School and begins at 8 p.m. Congratulations to these talented musicians on their great honors!

Hatchery Happenings The Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery & Aquarium will present the following events: Halloween At The Hatchery Starting Saturday, October 26th, thru Thursday the 31st, every Hatchery visitor wearing a costume will receive one free mini fish food funtainer. *** Haunted Hatchery Saturday, October 26th from 4 to 7 p.m., families
are welcome to take part in the haunted events. Refreshments for all. Kids in costumes will receive an extra treat. *** Egg Stripping Demonstrations October 26th & 27th. Demonstrations of the centuries old process of egg taking and fertilization will take place at 1 p.m. and again at 3 p.m. Witness how the Hatchery has been producing trout for more than 125 years!
