On Sunday, October 16th, 2022 there will be a Tennis Tournament hosted by tennis players, Veronica Walkin and Anna Bell Young at Cold Spring Harbor High School. All proceeds for the event will go directly to Pink Aid, an organization that is committed to providing financial support to breast cancer patients.

The hosts of the event, Veronica and Anna Bell, have known each other since they were in preschool at Anne Brower School in Huntington, NY, and have remained friends

ever since. Together they have made it a priority to raise awareness for breast cancer in their communities through various fundraising events.

Pink Aid, which began on Long Island in 2014, is an organization that helps women and men that are underserved and facing financial challenges while suffering with breast cancer. Patients that are facing a financial crisis or a temporary inability to pay their bills are welcome to connect with their nurse navigators or social workers to receive support from Pink Aid.

Veronica began her efforts in 2011 when she created a lemonade stand in honor of her aunt, Mary Swift, who had passed away earlier that year. Back then the donations were for breast cancer awareness. Fast forward, in 2014 Pink Aid’s Long Island chapter was founded, and since then all of Veronica’s fundraising efforts have been dedicated to Pink Aid. In 2017, Veronica Walkin also organized a car wash fundraiser at Gellerman Orthodontics and raised over $1,000. A few years later she partnered with Anna Bell

Young to raise funds for Pink Aid and they have hosted three yearly tennis events at Huntington Indoor Tennis and Cold Spring Harbor High School.

The teams have consisted of female players from Huntington High School, Cold Spring Harbor High School, as well as some players from St. Anthony’s High School. The tennis events have raised over $8,000 altogether.

Every year the girls get together to visit local businesses and ask for donations to their cause.

are backed by their families and friends who attend the events and even participate in them. The two of them also collect donations from the local community in order to give away raffle prizes during the events. Donations are graciously accepted to support the girls in their fundraising efforts. At this year’s event they will have a Venmo account set up as well to simplify the donation process, making it accessible to everyone. The event begins at 10am on Sunday, October 16th, 2022. They are expecting to have an even better turnout than years past. The tournament teams will be co-ed, including male players this time around. They will also be selling baked goods, pizza and t-shirts at the event on Sunday.

The Charity of the Month for October is Helen Keller Services

Helen Keller Services (HKS), a nonprofit organization with locations across Long Island and the nation, works with thousands of individuals who are blind, have low vision, are DeafBlind or have combined hearing and vision loss to live, work and thrive in their community of choice.

The Helen Keller National Center (HKNC), which is located in Port Washington, is the only comprehensive national program that provides information, referral, support and training exclusively to youths and adults who have combined vision and hearing loss. The Center also supports the families and professionals who work with the DeafBlind community.

Every summer, HKS hosts Camp Helen Keller, a program for children who are blind, have low vision are DeafBlind or have combined hearing and vision loss. The camp seeks to improve participants’ self-esteem, selfconfidence and socialization skills. It’s held at the LIU Post campus in Brookville and admits campers from Nassau, Suffolk and Queens, who attend free of charge and receive door-to-door transportation, also free of charge.

“Everyone here is the same,” says Ellie Gallagher, a 10-year-old camper from Freeport, NY. “Here we all have some kind of visual disability, so no one feels different. And it’s a lot of fun.” Campers participate in traditional activities, such as swimming, arts and crafts, music and dance classes, as well as field trips and technology

classes that have been adapted for individuals with low vision .

Every year, the camp organizes a show on the last day of the one-month program to celebrate the campers’ achievements, show parents and friends what campers have been doing and to say goodbye to old and new friends. This year, show-stopping performances included dance routines to favorite songs including “Rainbow Connection” “The Theme From Cheers” and singing performances by select campers.

“It’s such a confidence boost for her,” says Ellie’s mom, Jennifer. “She looks forward to seeing the same friends every year. The activities she experiences lets her know she’s just like every other kid and can do just about anything.”

Additionally, October is month that celebrates the blind community in a variety of ways, including World Sight Day on October 14, White Cane Day on October 15 and the entire month designated as National Disability Employment Awareness Month, which celebrates the contributions of America’s workers with disabilities past and present and showcases supportive, inclusive employment policies and practices. It’s important to accept people of all abilities, from all walks of life, and this nonprofit does just that.

Douglas Elliman Long Island Makes A Large Impact

The Long Island division of Douglas Elliman Realty, one of the largest residential brokerage companies in the nation, has partnered with The American Cancer Society to help in the fight against breast cancer.

As part of the organization’s annual, year-long initiative Real Men Wear Pink, agents from Elliman branch offices across Long Island have volunteered as Campaign Ambassadors to raise awareness and money in the fight to end breast cancer. Since its inception in 2013, Real Men Wear Pink has raised more than $40 million.

The brokerage’s involvement began in 2021, when Carlos Salinas, an agent in the Smithtown office, became the first Douglas Elliman Real Men Wear Pink Campaign Ambassador. Salinas found great joy in helping to make a difference and shared his experience with Ann Conroy, CEO of Douglas Elliman’s Long Island division. Inspired by Salinas, Conroy encouraged each Long Island branch office to establish a Campaign Ambassador for 2022. With more and more agents signing on, the Elliman team has raised more than $131,000 toward its $200,000 goal—and with plenty of fundraising

events yet to happen before year’s end.

“When I came to Douglas Elliman last year, my goal was to be one of the very best agents in the company while also giving back philanthropically,” said Salinas. “What better cause is there than to raise money for the fight against breast cancer. The support of both Ann Conroy and Katy Cardinale, Branch Manager of Douglas Elliman’s Smithtown office, has been monumental in my efforts of raising awareness through Real Men Wear Pink and The American Cancer Society.”

Salinas, who has raised almost $10,000 to date, is set to participate in a large fundraising and networking event on Tuesday, October 18th at Prato 850 in Commack, with all revenue benefiting the Real Men Wear Pink Campaign.

Michael Furino, another philanthropic agent with Douglas Elliman’s Franklin Square office, has dedicated himself to serving as a Campaign Ambassador.

“I started my own charity about 10 years ago, through which I have raised over $1,000,000,” said Furino.

“When I was presented with the opportunity to become involved with Real Men Wear Pink, I was immediately excited,

since I was confident in my ability to organize great events and raise significant funds. It’s been a great experience for me to be a Campaign Ambassador for many reasons, including getting to know other agents in my office on a deeper level—some of them have even had personal experiences battling breast cancer.”

Furino, who has raised almost $20,000 to date, will host a Vegas Night fundraiser on Thursday, October 20, at Chateau Briand in Carle Place.

Elwood BOE Honors John Glenn’s Outgoing Principal

Principal Carisa Burzynski was honored at the Elwood School District Board of Education’s Sept. 1 meeting, led by Dr. Kenneth Bossert, the district’s superintendent.

Burzynski was recently named the new assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction for the Babylon School District. Her last day in Elwood was Sept. 9. “Your confidence and trust in me to lead the John Glenn learning community

is forever in my heart, and I am very grateful for that,” Burzynski said. “It has been such a rich and rewarding experience for me. My job was made exponentially easier working alongside such a talented and impassioned group of educators, whom I’ve learned so much from. To the faculty, staff, families and students of John H. Glenn High School, thank you for allowing me to come into your lives.”

Corey McNamara Appointed

As New John Glenn Principal

Corey McNamara was named the new principal of Elwood-John H. Glenn High School, effective Sept. 12. He replaces Carisa Burzynski, who will be the new assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction for the Babylon School District. McNamara’s appointment was announced at Elwood’s Sept. 1 board meeting.

McNamara served as John Glenn’s assistant principal since July 2018. He previously worked for 14 years as an assistant principal, dean of students, coach and health educator in the Valley Stream Central High School District.

A Levittown resident, he earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education at LIU Post, a master’s degree in

health education at Hofstra University and his district leadership certification at Stony Brook University.

“My goal as an educator has always been to create a warm, welcoming and inclusive environment where all students can feel connected and comfortable

while striving to reach their fullest potential,” McNamara said. “As principal, it is my plan to continue working towards this goal and along the trajectory that we have been on over the past several years in Elwood and at John H. Glenn High School when guiding our students towards being future ready.”

“Mr. McNamara has met and exceeded all of the qualities necessary to take this next step in his career to serve our high school students and faculty,” Superintendent Dr. Kenneth Bossert said. “He is the best person to assume the role of instructional leader as we continue the ‘race for excellence’ at John Glenn High School.”

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer On Long Island

Annual Fire Prevention Open House

The Huntington Fire Department is inviting residents to their annual Open House on Friday, October 14 , from 7:00 pm-9:00 pm at the firehouse on 1 Leverich Place between New York Avenue and Wall Street in Huntington Village. There will be many events and demonstrations as well as fire prevention and safety information given by Huntington’s

volunteer firefighters.

There will be a live kitchen, oven, and wastepaper basket fire demonstrations showing the proper way to use fire extinguishers. Firefighters will demonstrate the powerful Hurst “Jaws of Life” tools, which are used to remove people that are trapped in auto accidents. Fire trucks will be on display, and

firefighters will explain the various apparatus and their use. The Water and Ice Rescue Team will show the equipment used to perform rescues in the waters around Huntington.

Free hot dogs and refreshments will be available as well as free raffles will also be held for Smoke Detectors and fire extinguishers.

Department is made up of more than 100 proud volunteers. It has been in existence since 1843 and responds any time of day, to any and all calls for help. It protects 14.0 square miles on Long Island’s North Shore, with its Headquarters in the Heart of Huntington Village.

Art League Of Long Island To Host Event In Celebration Of Latinx Heritage Month

In celebration of Latinx Heritage Month, the Art League of Long Island and Colored Colors present a day of fun family-friendly activities on Saturday, October 15, from 12pm to 6pm at the Art League of Long Island’s art center in Dix Hills. The event, sponsored by Suffolk County Legislators Manuel Esteban and Steven J. Flotteron, is open to the public and admission is free.

Children will enjoy an art activity called Amate, a form of traditional Mexican folk art. Amate evolved from the ancient form of paper produced from the bark of fig trees to its current form in the 21st century. Children will create colorful paintings on the amate paper led by professional artist/ art educator Robin Rosen O’Leary from 1:30-2:30pm. Adults and children alike can learn salsa dancing at 2:30pm, led by dance instructor Dominic Sparano.

Enjoy artwork in the Strolling Gallery by self-taught artist and Brentwood HS alum Diego Garcia. Garcia’s style includes vivid use of color, fragments of lyrics and poems, graffiti and abstract expressionist techniques.
