Swim Across America Event Raises $4,747 For Cancer Research

For the 11th consecutive year, Harborfields High School’s girls varsity swim team hosted a Swim Across America event at Centerport Yacht Club. This year, 33 swimmers from Harborfields,

Huntington, South Huntington and Elwood participated on Sept. 8 and raised $4,747 for cancer research, prevention and treatment.

Proceeds from the fundraiser will support

immunotherapy research at the Swim Across America Laboratory at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, lung cancer clinical trials at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, pediatric brain cancer

research at the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research at North Shore University Hospital and pediatric oncology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center’s Children’s Cancer Hospital.

“It was a terrific afternoon watching our team raise funds for such an important cause,” said Robert Franco, the district’s director of health, physical education and athletics. “I am so proud of

our coaches and athletes. What we do during competition matters, but the character we show outside of competition sets us apart.”

The Parrot EXPO Returns With A New Location!

The Long Island Parrot Society is a nonprofit that is dedicated to responsible bird ownership through education and example. They stayed strong through the pandemic and have even increased their membership over the past three years. However, their beloved Parrot EXPO, Long Island’s only major exotic bird event, hasn’t taken place since 2019.

It is with great excitment that they are bringing back the expo on Saturday, October 14th, with a new location, a new lower admission price and of course, everything parrot! Timed raffles, presentations by avian enrichment expert, Robin Sullivan, face painting, a fun prize wheel and networking

opportunities will abound! Attendees can shop for bird food, supplies and even cages at great prices... there will even be some samples and freebies.

Live parrots will be on display and guests are encouraged to ask questions about bird care and behavior, which can be quite complex. Due to the overwhelming number of birds displaced due to owners’ lifestyle changes, allergies, infirmity and more, the Long Island Parrot Society’s Adoption Referral Service is constantly busy, helping to find qualified adoptive homes for these parrots.

ADULTS $5.00; SENIOR (60+) $3.00; UNDER 12 $3.00; UNDER 2 FREE!

“This recognition is a collective effort of the entire Elwood community and organization,”

Principal Corey McNamara said. “We commend our students for continuously striving to reach their fullest potential while challenging themselves throughout their educational journey.”

Fails To Deter

While the pouring rain on the morning of Sept. 30 led to a disappointing cancellation of the Harborfields High School homecoming parade, the community’s spirit could not be deterred, rallying for a terrific football game against Hauppauge. The contest more than made up for it, offering spectacular halftime performances by the school’s band, cheerleaders and kickline, capped off by a comeback 28-24 victory by the Tornadoes. Quarterback Jack Weiss

threw three touchdowns of 36- 10 and 82 yards, while Vincent Bolognino had a day to remember with five catches for 190 yards and three touchdowns, six carries for 65 yards and a touchdown, and six tackles and an interception.

“The weather couldn’t dampen our school spirit this homecoming,” Athletic Director Rob Franco said. “Our students and community came out in full force to show their Harborfields pride and support our programs. It was an incredible day with

an exciting fourth quarter comeback win for our football team.”

“In the spirit of unity and celebration, last week’s homecoming festivities at Harborfields High School were nothing short of extraordinary,” Principal Dr. Marie Netto said. “Not even the rain could wash away the enthusiasm and energy displayed by our school community, and I am so happy that our Tornadoes were able to pull off a homecoming win on Saturday.”

Elwood BOE Recognizes Freshman Girl Scout Project

Elwood-John H. Glenn High School freshmen

Bella Ronai and Samantha Siegler, both cadets in Girl Scout Troop 2597, were recognized at a recent Elwood School District Board of Education’s meeting.

For their Girl Scouts Silver Award project, the pair developed – with guidance from Harley Avenue Primary School Principal Dr. Denise Toscano – a web page and video for younger students that will help foster a love of learning and playing musical instruments. Ronai and Siegler also donated eight picture books about music and musicians to the

Harley Avenue library.

“It’s a lot of hard work that goes into doing a website, and preparation for a Silver Award takes time and effort, a plan and execution,” Board of Education President James Tomeo said. “Awesome job!”

Interim Superintendent Kelly Fallon also congratulated the two freshman Scouts, and noted that the district was ready and excited for the start of classes next week, saying, “We look forward to welcoming all of our students and families back to our facilities, and we are looking forward to a great school year.”

protect We America’s

critical infrastructure with the world’s most advanced security

Our nation’s critical infrastructure has become an increasingly common target for cyberattacks. Google is working with organizations across the country to help protect the infrastructure we all rely on.

We’re joining forces with national defense agencies to deploy advanced AI technology to ensure our nation’s digital defenses remain secure.

We’re securing patient data for hospitals across the country with industry-leading threat detection and response, speeding up cyber threat response time to hours instead of weeks.

We’re protecting student and teacher data in school districts nationwide with Chromebooks and Workspace for Education, which are secure by default.

We’re working with local governments across the country to protect public infrastructure and keep critical systems online 24/7.
