welcomed Washington Drive Primary School’s new Principal Kathy McNally and Assistant Principal Kerry Neira; Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School’s Principal Mary Williams and Assistant Principal Andrea Horowitz; and Oldfield Middle School Assistant Principal Maribeth Corr, who will also serve as the district’s guidance administrator.

Lastly, Dr. Manning introduced the district’s new Assistant Director for Pupil Personnel Services Rose Scammel and Special Education Chairperson Anne Marie Dunn.

He then delved into a few of the district’s new initiatives, including a one-on-one Chromebook initiative for ninth graders, which is expected to expand to eighth grade in 2021.

Additionally, he explained that district administrators are working with stakeholders to develop a mission statement to reflect what the board of education describes as the district’s three pillars of success: innovation, curriculum and finance.

The remainder of the day was tailored to individual departments,

Department heads had an opportunity to discuss the upcoming school year with staff.

To close out the day, teachers had an opportunity to set up their classrooms and prepare for the first day of school on Sept. 4.

welcomed eight new district administrators, including Assistant Superintendent for Business Sharon Donnelly, who presented a brief breakdown of a proposed $20.4 million bond to improve infrastructure across the district’s schools.

Hatchery’s new turtle pond as part of his Eagle Scout Project.

The Hatchery, which after 99 years of operation as a State facility, opened as a private non-profit educational institution in 1982. Its visitors can tour two aquarium buildings which house many species of freshwater fish, aquatic reptiles and amphibians, all native to New York.

There are six outdoor ponds where brook and rainbow trout are raised and sold to enthusiasts

who use them to stock their ponds. In addition to the trout ponds, the Hatchery also maintains a warm water fish pond and a turtle pond. Catch & Keep Trout Fishing is a popular addition to Hatchery activities. The Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery & Aquarium is open year round, seven days a week, from 10:00 to 5:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, June, July and August, open until 6:00 p.m

Mock Trial Team Gets Hands-On Experience

During the summer, freshmen in John H. Glenn High School’s Mock Trial Team had a unique and exciting opportunity to work with professional lawyers, federal judges and FBI agents as part of a program designed to teach them about the U.S. legal system.

The “EDNY Justice Institute: Crime, the Constitution and the Courts,” is a week-long

program, run by the federal court in conjunction with the Touro Law Center and the Eastern District of New York Chapter of the Federal Bar Association.

The district’s four students, Abby Rothleder, Isabella Marino, Jack Rersnick and Max Slesinski, who all recently returned to high school as sophomores, observed real court proceedings and worked alongside

prosecutors, defense lawyers and deputy U.S. Marshals to develop basic advocacy skills, which they used in a mock trial competition against high school teams from East Meadow and Great Neck South.

The students won both competition rounds working as attorneys, according to the club’s adviser, Megan Gieser.

Northport Students Honor Peace Students at Dickinson Avenue Elementary School took part in a national observance of peace on Sept 20 as they held their handmade pinwheels high in honor of the International Day of Peace on Sept 21.

Pinwheels for Peace was created in 2005 by two art teachers in Coconut Creek, Florida, as a way for students to express their

beliefs and promote peace around the world.

Principal Laurie Welch Storch said that peace can mean something different to different people. Some may describe peace as kindness, tolerance or respect. “It’s an understanding that we are all different,” she said, adding that each of the students’ pinwheels were just as unique.

Over the past several days, students created pinwheels and wrote their thoughts about peace on one side and decorated the other with pictures and drawings to visually express their feelings.

To conclude the event, Amy Carruthers, the school’s music teacher, led the students in singing “Song of Peace.”

The Charity of the Month for October is: The Cemetry of Lost Souls (lostsoulsli.com) Benefitting Melissa’s Wish It’s hard to believe that October is already here and Halloween is quickly approaching! After The Cemetery of Lost Souls, a grassroots organization ran by a family in Massapequa Park, reached out to me and told me their story, I decided to choose them for the Charity of the Month. Sometimes it’s easy to judge a book by it’s cover. For example, when you see the frightening Haunted House that they create each year, you may not be thinking that there is a deep meaning behind why they do it. Once I discovered this, along with the driving force which pushes them to bring this event back year after year, I knew I had to feature them!

In 2008 Christopher and Joann (husband and wife) of Massapequa Park started decorating their yard for Halloween with their children. In 2009 they built their first prop, added some smoke, lights and store bought decorations. That same year they became aware of H.O.L.I., an organization on Long Island that compiles a list of the best decorated home “Haunts”. It became their family’s goal to make it onto that list and in 2011 they achieved that goal.

In 2012, their children had the idea of using their “special talents” to help others. Their oldest son thought of making their displays more interactive by adding actors to haunt their elaborate sets and setting up a donation box that people could donate to different charities. Their charity event was officially born and every year since it has grown bigger.

Each year this organization gears up to create an elaborate Haunted House on their property, located at 350 Broadway in Massapequa Park.

Additionally and more importantly, each year they choose a charity to raise funds for. The best part is, they don’t keep a penny for themselves. Every bit of money raised through this event (admission, donations, sponsorships, etc.) is given to charity.

They rely heavily on devoted individuals and community support, as the actors and people who put the haunt on are volunteers and most of

the actors are local students.

They have raised a lot of money over the years in donations alone and have donated to charities such as Autism Speaks, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation and Long Island Cares.

In 2017, Massapequa Park Mayor, Jeff Provato, even showed up to give support and was given the “Key To The Haunt”!

This year they are donating to Melissa’s Wish, a non-profit organization founded with the purpose of providing short term, non-medical financial aid in the form of a grant to caregivers who are assisting those afflicated with a serious illness, injury or end of life event.

This year they will bring the community a new interactive experience with the second Lost Souls Walk-Thru haunt, new rooms, new scares and new thrills! Stop by on October 12, 18-19, 25-26, 31 and November 1-2 from 7PM-11:30PM to see what it is all about!

Additionally, they are still actively looking for volunteers in the following areas: Digital Marketing, Scare Team Members, Security and on their Bake Team. Volunteers must be 16 years of age and volunteer time can count towards community service hours! Sponsorship opportunities are also available.

Councilman Ed Smyth partnered with Brett’s Bicycle Recycle to host a Bicycle Donation Drive at American Legion Post 360 on Saturday, September 21st.

Lisa Karrer and Deborah Porretto - founders of the non-profit organization - have dedicated their time to giving back to the community that gave them so much after the passing of Lisa’s brother, Brett, in a

tragic motorcycle accident.

Bicycles, tricycles, scooters, skateboards and other gear such as helmets and pads are collected and then repaired and donated back into the Huntington community for underserved children, teens and adults who may be in need. Lisa and Deborah emphasize that riding is freedom, and how important it is to be aware of bicycles and motorcycles on

the road.

The response from the community was overwhelming. Bikes were received in every condition imaginable – some brand new, some missing handlebars or seats. Those deemed unserviceable will be dismantled for individual parts. Over 110 bicycles were collected including helmets and other protective gear.

“New Beginnings” Eric Meyerowitz walked the halls of Northport High School for what he thought would be the last time back in 2006 as the class valedictorian. When he tossed his cap in the air signifying the end of his high school career, little did he know that he would return 13 years later to deliver the keynote address at Superintendent’s Conference Day on Sept 3.

Mr. Meyerowitz, now a clinical fellow at Massachusetts General Hospital, reflected on his high school experience and thanked the district’s teachers for shaping him into the person he is today.

“It’s really incredible for me to be back here today,” he said.

In his address, he discussed the crucial role that teachers play in the formation of citizenship

in their students and the importance of fostering student and teacher relationships.

He often referred to the final verse of the U.S. Pledge of Allegiance: “With liberty and justice for all.”

He explained that freedom and universal equality is the foundation of our society and stressed that those ideals are taught in classrooms every day.

“Citizenship must be taught,” he said. “It must be modeled.”

Mr. Meyerowitz discussed the five traits of active citizenship: selfworth, learning to value differences, critical and independent thinking, strong work ethic and community service.

Speaking to the teachers in the audience, he said, “Do not underestimate the impact you have on your

students.”

Following Mr. Meyerowitz’s speech, elementary school teachers had an opportunity to meet with their department heads to review curriculum, instruction and assessment procedures for the upcoming school year.

Additionally, districtwide staff could choose to attend one of several sessions, including Narcan training, provided by Cohen Children’s Medical Center, or workshops on best practices for teaching assistants to foster independence and positive communication.

Teachers will return to their respective schools on Sept. 4 to attend a faculty meeting and prepare their classrooms for the first day of school on Sept. 5.

Nassau County Executive Laura Curran has also informed the Town that she has requested funding from the IDA, to also help save the Oyster Festival.

Students were welcomed back to school at Harborfields on Sept. 3, but for some, the transition was a bit more intimidating.

To help ease that anxiety, kindergartners at Washington Drive Primary School were gifted handmade teddy bears that they could squeeze tight if they needed a hug.

Newly appointed Principal Kathy McNally explained that the bears were made by middle schoolers last year as a way to welcome the kindergartners to the district. “It was really a labor of love,” she said, adding that many of the students gave up their lunch period and recess to build the bears.

The PTA donated the materials to make more than 200 bears, each with a green scarf wrapped their
