For Long Island, Inc.

The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring post-mastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community.

This coalition serves all of Long Island, not just West Islip, and has remained open throughout the pandemic. They helped serve those in need during this pandemic by giving them food and gas gift cards, as well as assistance with living expenses.

by Breast Cancer. These ribbons will be tied to the flags and together the flags and ribbons will fly for the entire month of October.

That’s a significant benefit of being vaccinated, as people who get their flu shots can indirectly help hospitals conserve potentially scarce resources. As the COVID-19 virus rapidly spread late in the winter of 2019-20, many hospitals across the country and even the globe were stretched incredibly thin.

So anything ordinary citizens can do to alleviate such burdens can help save lives while also making hospital workers’ jobs easier and less stressful.

Many people may be concerned about going out and getting a flu shot in 2020. That’s especially likely for people who live in communities where

the COVID-19 virus is spreading. However, the CDC notes that getting a flu shot in 2020 is an essential part of protecting your health and the health of your family. Many doctor’s offices are now insisting patients wait in their cars until doctors are ready to see them, and masks may be required when entering the doctor’s office. Such measures can reduce the risk of getting the COVID-19 virus when visiting a doctor’s office for a flu shot or another visit, so patients should not be hesitant to receive their vaccinations in 2020. Patients can follow such protocols even if their doctors are not insisting they do so. The same safety measures can be followed by people who intend to get their flu shots from neighborhood pharmacies.

Flu shots are vital to individual and public health every year, but the importance of being vaccinated against influenza in 2020 is heightened as the world continues to confront the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus.

The role individuals play in their own health care became more prominent in 2020. As a global pandemic forced people from all walks of life to prioritize their personal health each time they left their homes, many individuals sought ways to take a more active role in their health care.

Proactive health care has long been touted by medical professionals, though many people still don’t take such recommendations to heart. In fact, a recent report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated that as much as 75 percent of health care spending in the United States is reactive in nature, meaning that money is going toward treating conditions and diseases rather than preventing them from occurring in the first place.

Taking an active role in your own health care is easier than people may think. And the benefits of such a proactive approach are numerous, including a reduced risk for various diseases.

Boy Scouts of Troop 106 Takes a Bike Hike The members of Scouts BSA Troop 106 of Huntington being so frustrated at the continued lockdown, missing their friends and the outdoors found a way to accomplish both and do it safely by following established protocols.

The most disappointing cancellation for the troop was their annual summer camp.

Typically scouts earn many merit badges at the weeklong sleepaway summer camp, but this year due to COVID-19 meant no merit badges.

In response to summer camp being cancelled, Troop 106 shifted gears and set a goal to complete the physically demanding Cycling Merit Badge (Mountain Bike Option) by the end of August; so that everyone in the troop could have at least one merit badge complete for the summer.

Beginning on August 4th, the troop began a number of build-up rides, two each of two miles, five miles and eight miles duration.

These were done at many of the local mountain bike trails; Edgewood Preserve,

Belmont Lake State Park and Rocky Point Preserve.

Troop 106 completed the 22-mile culminating event trail ride on August 29th at the NassauSuffolk Greenbelt trail, a significant physical and mental effort.

This final ride was completed in about four hours starting in Plainview, going through Bethpage State park, the Massapequa Preserve and ending at Merrick Road in Massapequa Park.

Bicycling is naturally social distant, as all the scouts are at least one bike length apart, everyone had masks, and there was one scout who actually made hand sanitizer (a Suffolk County Council COVID-19 Community Response Award winner) for the troop. Given all safety protocols in place, the parents and scouts knew they were being safe. They found a way to challenge themselves, get outdoors, work hard and accomplish a significant challenge, but most of all meet with their friends.

Other merit badge requirements were first

aid, knowing potential hazards, bike maintenance and learning how to change a flat tire.

The parents prepared a special Finish Line Ceremony, complete with a Finish Line, flags, a large Cycling Merit Badge replica, and brownies!

Said Scoutmaster Steve Kowalski, “The troop parents were instrumental in supporting the scouts in this challenge. They participated as road crossing guards, sweep riders and bearers of the first aid and tool kits. It is safe to say this could not have been accomplished without the parent’s support! Less a few scrapes and scratches, the scouts all finished and did something special. They enjoyed the comradery, and will remember the good feeling of accomplishment for some time to come.”

CENTERPORT FIRE DEPARTMENT REMEMBERS 9/11 - The Centerport Fire Department held a 9/11 memorial service to remember all the first responders and civilians that lost their lives in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Centerport firefighters were joined by retired members of the F.D.N.Y. in honoring the victims and those that have subsequently perished due to 9/11 related illnesses. The service was held at the memorial monument on Park Circle that contains a steel I-Beam from the World Trade Center. Northwell Staff Receives One In A Million Award Northwell Health staff are being honored with Multiplying Good’s One in a Million Award in recognition of the care they provided during New York’s coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.

“At Northwell, our tireless and dedicated staff treated more than 77,000 people when New York was the COVID-19 epicenter.

They worked through and beyond exhaustion to care for people in need,” said Michael Dowling, Northwell Health president and CEO. “I am humbled by our staff’s unyielding grit and compassion and I am proud that they are being recognized with this award.”

Northwell’s frontline staff cared for more COVID-19 patients than any other US health system and did so under heroic circumstances.

From emergency medical technicians who manned the ambulances to phlebotomists deployed to drive thru testing sites, caregivers at hospitals and environmental services workers who kept everything clean, it was a

true team effort.

The One in a Million Awards Campaign celebrates the millions whose acts of bravery, generosity and kindness are bringing the nation together in this time and, through recognition, inspire others to do the same. Awardees are featured on the campaign’s website and social media, and provided a digital certificate.

“ESSENTIAL DRIVE FOR SENIORS” -On the National Day of Service, United Way of Long Island and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 1049 launch its Essentials Drive for Seniors to collect household, sanitization, toiletry and PPE items as part of United Way’s Safe at Home for Seniors program. As part of United Way of Long Island’s response to the community needs that emerged from COVID-19, the organization hosted an Essentials Drive for Seniors, chaired by Pat Guidice, Business Manager of IBEW Local 1049. The drive launched on Friday, September 11 in recognition of the National Day of Service, in which Americans are called to volunteer in their local communities.

The Essentials Drive for Seniors provides an opportunity for Long Islanders to come together and give back to senior citizens, many of whom are still vulnerable to the coronavirus. While social distancing protects the health of older adults, it also severs ties to critical resources, including access to basic but critical household, sanitization, toiletry and PPE items.

Labor union members of IBEW Local 1049, who actively support the Long Island community, donated everyday essential items that seniors need but may not otherwise have in their homes such as toothpaste, ONE IN A MILLION AWARD - Northwell Health staff are being honored with shampoo, dental fixative, Multiplying Good’s One in a Million Award in recognition of the care they provided facial tissue and other personal items. during New York’s coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.

“We are very pleased to be working with United Way of Long Island to support its Safe at Home for Seniors initiative,” said Pat Guidice, Business Manager, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 1049.

“Our Long Island members, who handle the utility work for National Grid and PSEG Long Island, play an integral role supporting the Long Island Community, and that includes its senior population. The COVID pandemic still has countless seniors confined to their homes. We need to provide as much assistance as we can.”

“We are grateful to have Pat and his team of union members be part of United Way of Long Island’s Essentials Drive for Seniors.

The items collected will make a significant impact in the lives of seniors across Long Island. Together, we are part of a United Solution to uplift our neighbors and provide them stability,” said Theresa A. Regnante, President and CEO of United Way of Long Island.

The drive is part of United Way’s Safe at Home for Seniors program, which supports older adults in

the Towns of Islip, Babylon, Brookhaven and Huntington by caring for the health and safety of seniors who are sheltering in place and lack resources. Through United Way’s community partners - Family Service League, Gerald J. Ryan Outreach Center, Housing Help Inc. and Pronto of Long Islanditems collected from the Essentials Drive will be distributed to those in need throughout the fall and early winter.

Local 1049 union members can drop off items at their specified work sites.

The Spencer Foundation’s 1st Annual ‘Fishing for a Cause’ Raises Funds The Spencer Foundation, in partnership with KiDS NEED MORE, held its first fishing fundraiser “Fishing for a Cause,” on Saturday September 12th from 4 to 8 pm, on the Captain Eddie B III in Captree State Park in Oak Beach. Thirty-five attendees went aboard in search of fluke, enjoying catered lunch on the way.

The group landed a catch of $1280 that The Spencer Foundation will use to bring fun to kids with cancer and their families. The Spencer Foundation, founded in 2016, was created to provide resources for children and their families coping with cancer. The Spencer Foundation wishes to thank all who participated, especially to the captain and crew that made it all possible. The Spencer Foundation was founded by Jean and Jeanine Spencer, who believed in always making a positive impact by their

presence. Jean and Jeanine Spencer were partners for 30 years and married in 2015.

Jean was a lover of life, loving anything outdoors, including being an avid skier and a horsewoman.

She loved children and was considered a big kid herself. Jean was known for her positive attitude and her smile. Jean worked for almost 40 years at UL LLC striving to make the world a safer place. She retired and became a nutritionist, studying and fascinated by homotoxicology and natural healing. She was armed with two Master Degrees and was going for her Doctorate when she was diagnosed with Stage 3 Ovarian cancer in 1995.

Jean found the positive in everything, even while dealing with cancer. Being the forever optimist, she believed that by living with cancer and dealing with all its challenges, she would be better enabled to help others. She lost her long fought battle after 10 years, due to complications with not being able to make her own viable blood. But during those 10 years, she touched many lives with

her smile and profound optimism and her ability to find sunshine in any cloudy day.

In early 2015 Jeanine was also diagnosed with Stage 1 Ovarian Cancer. During their cancer journey, Jean and Jeanine’s hearts ached for the children whose youth was interrupted by their illness. Before Jean died, they decided to create a foundation to provide resources for children and their families. By founding The Spencer Foundation in March 2016, Jeanine fulfilled Jean’s final wish.

With the strength and support of the board of the Spencer Foundation, the Spencer Foundation will bring hope, lots of smiles and support to children and their families fighting cancer, always watched over by our own guardian angel.

can sometimes be a long hard journey. What better symbol than the turtle to tell you to take it “Slow And Steady”? In December of 2012, Jeanine Spencer crocheted a turtle as a gift for Jean with a note that stated just that – “Slow And Steady”. Jean named her turtle SAS, so our logo was born. The Turtle has also been known to represent: Strength, Endurance, Stability, Order, Creation, Patience, Longevity, Innocence and Protection.
