“Gardening is good for the mind, it’s good for the soul and it’s good for the body,” said legendary football coach, Vince Dooley. “I enjoy coming out to garden, and when I finish, I feel like I’ve done something, and I feel good.”

outdoors like exercising, painting or writing, you can set aside areas for them.

Finally, Scott recommends designing your garden to awaken your five senses. Here’s how:

1. Sight: Choose calming colors, or those that bring you joy. The simple sight of a breathtaking array of plants or an arrangement of favorite flowers is bound to give your mental health a boost.

2. Taste: Growing your own food will provide you with an incredibly rewarding harvest. Not only will you be able to enhance meals with the fruits of your labor, you’ll get the personal satisfaction of a job well done.

3. Hearing: Among the plants and flowers, add fixtures, such as wind chimes and water features, that’ll produce soothing sounds. And with the new habitat you’ve created, you’ll enjoy bird song, too!

4. Touch: From the light, feathery textures of petals to the rough surfaces of bark or bush stems, touch offers a deeper sense of connection to nature.

5. Smell: You may already use aromatherapy indoors. Take this concept outside by growing fragrant flowers and herbs, so you can literally

“stop to smell the roses.”

Harborfields History Honor Society Students Remember 9/11

2022 LEADERS OF PROMISE SCHOLARS - Suffolk County Community College’s Amy Mata (Central Islip) and Emily Lucana (Huntington) have been named 2022 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholars and will each receive a $1,000 scholarship. The pair are among 207 Phi Theta Kappa members selected nationwide from more than 1,300 applications. The Suffolk pair were selected based on scholastic achievement, community service, and leadership potential. The Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholarship Program helps new Phi Theta Kappa members defray educational costs while enrolled in associate degree programs and encourages the students to assume leadership roles by participating in Honor Society programs. Make A Dining Room More Elegant For Entertaining

The kitchen may be the heart of a home, but when it comes to entertaining, a dining room — if one is present in a house — tends to be the prime gathering spot for meals.

Dining rooms may not be top on the list of spaces to renovate, as they tend to be used infrequently. But a dining room makeover may still be a worthy endeavor. Here are some simple ways to make the dining room more elegant and functional.

• Clear out the clutter. The first step toward improving a dining room eating area is to remove any extraneous items from the space. If the dining room table is not used very often, it likely will become a catch-all for other items, such as bills, newspapers, or kids’ homework. Rather than using the dining space as a makeshift office or homework station, invest in a rolling cart to store those papers and other items. Simply roll it into a closet or another room when it’s time to host a party.

• Hang a statement light. Few decorative items add as much drama and ambiance to a dining space as a new

overhead light. People hear chandelier and think of a bejeweled or crystal design, but various chandelier styles can fit the

aesthetic of a home. The light will be a focal point and instantly make the dining area more elegant. Install the light on

a dimmer to adjust the illumination as needed to set the mood.

• Invest in new linens. Purchase coordinating table linens that will be used for special occasions. A decorative table cloth or table runner coupled with cloth napkins and placemats helps to set the scene for the dinner party.

• Add a piece of artwork. Many modern homeowners have eschewed the China Cabinet that once was standard in dining rooms. Rather than a bulky piece of furniture, a large piece of statementmaking artwork or framed photos over a more minimalistic buffet table or small service bar is preferable. Choose artwork that complements the colors in the space.

• Include a centerpiece. Centerpieces add sophistication to the table and tie into the event. Floral arrangements, a bowl or basket of fruit, pine cones or greens from outdoors, or collectibles like shells in a tall canister can serve as centerpieces.

There are many simple ways to dress up dining spaces and make them more elegant.

A Successful, Spirited Homecoming In Harborfields

A beautifully sunny day was merely the beginning for a perfect homecoming in Harborfields on Sept. 10. The sights and sounds of fire trucks and the Harborfields High School Marching

Band filled the air as the parade made its way to the school grounds. The gradelevel float contest, dubbed “Harborfields Hollywood Hits,” featured a “Pirates of the Caribbean” theme from

the seniors, a winning “Cars” entry from the juniors, “The Wizard of Oz” from the sophomores and “Space Jam” from the freshmen.

In attendance were Homecoming King Sean Tucker (also a member of the football team) and Homecoming Queen Isabella Fiore, both named two days prior at the school’s bonfire night.

Once at James T. Brennan Memorial Stadium, the excitement continued as the varsity football Tornadoes vanquished Rocky Point’s Eagles by a score of 29-14. Highlights included a 70yard rushing and a 30-yard receiving touchdown by Vincent Bolognino; a strong game by quarterback Shane Longin, who threw for 100 yards and added rushed for 50; and excellent defensive efforts by Nico Markowski and Gavin Lindkvist, with 13 and 10 tackles, respectively, for the game.

Marvelous halftime entertainment featured

Harborfields’ cheerleaders, a spectacular show by the marching band and kickline, and spirited dances from representatives from each grade.

“Our homecoming

festivities were a tremendous success,” Principal Dr. Marie Netto said. “The parade brought the whole community together and the homecoming game was well attended and full of spirit. We are so proud of all our students and so delighted Harborfields gained a homecoming win.”

Harmony Cafe is a local nonprofit organization with a mission to empower people by providing wellness, education and access to affordable nutritious foods, in a socially engaging environment that creates healthy lives.

Rosemarie Mccarthy, the Founder of Harmony Cafe, grew up in a working-class family, where money was tight and food insecurity was sometimes a cause of stress. When she happened upon a mention of the One World Everyone Eats café model in a magazine, she went looking for a cafe to volunteer. This model goes off of the idea of a donation-based cafe that services a diverse socioeconomic range and providing nutritious and delicious meals. It sounded like something to which she wanted to donate her time and energy, but to her surprise, there was nowhere to volunteer in the Long Island region. With grit and determination, she decided to start Harmony Cafe right here on Long Island.

Right now they do not have their own physical cafe, however they have hosted meal events, primarily at the VFW hall on Edwards Street in Patchogue, NY. Their meal events use a Pay-What-You-Can pricing donation model, where anyone can come get a healthy fresh meal and pay only what they can.

When the global pandemic started affecting the Long Island community, the nonprofit organization redirected their mission to assist those in need. This included hosting food drives, grab-ngo sites and free food delivery services. Rosemarie’s vision for this organization is to have a storefront cafe.

Ideally, the cafe would be in or around Patchogue, NY and would

service anyone who walks through their doors. Harmony Cafe is actively looking for the right opportunity to make this happen. Whether you are a chef or someone that is looking for restaurant/cafe space and would like to partner with Harmony Cafe to share the space, or you are someone who knows of a storefront spot that would possibly work as a home for this cafe, please call 631.730.8775 or email info@harmonycafeli.org.

Additionally, volunteers are needed to help their organization continue to grow! You can join their Volunteer Team and help in the following areas:

• Coordinate Fundraisers

• Wellness Chefs

• Serve On Their Board Of Directors (Actively looking for a treasurer that has a background in finance or accounting. Retirees are encouraged to apply!)

• Community Outreach

Lastly, Harmony Cafe holds a Free Thanksgiving Dinner each year at Toast Coffeehouse in Patchogue. This year, it will be held on November 22 and there will be live music there as well! The organization is seeking sponsors to help support this great event. Last year the organization proudly served over 300 traditional Thanksgiving restaurant dinners to those in need.

Stony Brook University Student/East Northport Resident Wins Hospital Association Scholarship

Melanie Formosa, a resident of East Northport, NY and student at Stony Brook University, was selected as the 2022 Ann Marie Brown Memorial Scholarship recipient. The $2,000 scholarship is awarded annually by the Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council (NSHC) and its Communications Committee. Formosa is a rising senior at Stony Brook University who will graduate in May 2023 with a degree in

journalism.

Formosa is the recipient of several scholarships and awards for academic excellence, leadership, and community service. She maintains a 4.0 GPA and has interned for WSHU Public Radio, the Southampton Press, and in the communications department at the Suffolk County Water Authority.

She currently serves as president and program director for the campus

radio station WUSB and also assumed the role of news director in the fall of 2021. In that role, she founded the station’s news department with a team of students she recruited and trained. She also hosts a weekly two-hour radio show, which is focused on positvity in mental health.

The Ann Marie Brown Memorial Scholarship has been awarded since 1994 and commemorates the late vice president for government

and public affairs at the Hospital Council. Brown served in this role from 1983 – 1993. The scholarship is offered to a college junior, senior, or post-graduate student who is both a resident of Long Island and studies communications/ marketing, journalism, or health care administration.

Committee is comprised of the senior public relations directors from Long Island’s not-for-profit and public hospitals. In addition to administering this yearly scholarship, this committee oversees the Hospital Council’s communication initiatives. Northport High School Seniors Announced As National Merit Semifinalists

Northport High School seniors Nicholas Crafa, Joshua D’Souza, John Dwyer and Zoe Meadows are starting the year off strong, being named National Merit Semifinalists for the 2022-23 school year. The students earned this recognition following their scores on the 2021 preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

Selected students can now pursue becoming a National Merit Finalist and complete their scholarship

applications with support from guidance counselors. This process is highly competitive and is determined based on his academic performance, extracurricular activities, community service record, leadership, employment experience and more.

“Each year, I am incredibly proud to see our students receive this recognition,” said Northport High School Principal Rob Dennis. “Not only does this speak to the students’ academic

accomplishments, but to their hard work and commitment to being active members of our school community.”

While over one million students will take the PSAT and become entrants for the National Merit Scholarship, only approximately 16,000 are selected as semifinalists. Finalists will be announced in February 2023 with scholarship winners announced the following month.

Jake Lauto Officially Becomes An Eagle Scout

The Eagle Scout ceremony for Elwood-John H. Glenn High School senior Jake Lauto was held on Aug. 21 at Huntington Town Hall. Lauto recently built sustainable benches in Elwood Park as a tribute to his grandfather, Joseph Lauto.

Guests attending the standing-room-only ceremony included Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison; town officials such as Councilman Dr. Dave Bernardo, Receiver of Taxes Gillian Guthman and Highway Superintendent Andre Sorrentino; and Elwood Superintendent Dr. Kenneth Bossert.

Numerous members of Elwood School District’s administration and faculty were there to support Lauto, and John Glenn High School Assistant Principal Corey McNamara received a special recognition for his efforts to support Lauto’s Eagle Scout project.

After the flag ceremony and introductory words from Mercy Haven

Executive Director Pat Griffith, his original scoutmaster spoke about the beginning of Lauto’s journey 11 years ago, his “Trail to Eagle” rank advancements, and the awards and accolades he collected during his progression.

“Everyone should really learn to be a scout,” Lauto said, noting how everything he learned in scouting was helpful in his personal development and daily life. He discussed his sense of citizenship in his community before concluding by saying, “There is a scout in all of us. If there’s one piece of advice that I could give to all to make the world a better place, it would be to let your inner scout shine.”

Suffolk County Boy Scouts of America President David Hunt then administered the Eagle Scout Charge and Oath. All Eagle scouts in the audience rose up and recited the oath in unison with Lauto. Finally, he received his Eagle pin from his former and present

scoutmasters, and was formally introduced as Eagle Scout Jake Lauto.

“What a true pleasure to watch one of our outstanding Knights become an Eagle Scout,” Dr. Bossert said. “Congratulations once again to Jake on this amazing accomplishment.”
