BOY SCOUT TROOP 68 HELPS CLEAN UP CHURCH - Boy Scout Troop 68 charted by the Huntington Rotary Club is an all Boy Scout troop. The scouts volunteered to clean up the grounds at St. Peters Church in Huntington Station on Sept. 5 from 9:00 am-11:30 after Pastor Rebecca sent out an email requesting help. 12 scouts ranging from ages 10-15 helped clear away shrubs and branches left from the storm. They were happy to help their parish and community.

In their dynamic video, “The Importance of Voting for High School Students,” Rithika and Juliana discussed the need for young eligible voters to participate

Maintenance is necessary in order for fireplaces and stoves to function safely, and that upkeep must include paying close attention to the functionality of the chimney.

Chimneys are designed to last for decades. Cracks and spalling in brick chimneys are common concerns that can cause significant damage if left unchecked.

Chimney maintenance involves more than cleaning the flue. Northport and East Northport Middle Schools are eager to welcome their students back through their doors, and sixth grade orientation was the first taste of the new school year. Excited new middle schoolers and their families entered the buildings and were greeted by their schools’ teachers and administrators, as well as Northport Middle School Principal Timothy Hoss or East Northport Middle School Principal Pat DeStefano. For most sixth graders, this was their first time in the buildings, and for all students, it marked their first time back since the March closure.

The orientations took

place on Aug. 26, and parents and their children were able to stop by in small groups to visit classrooms, the gym, the main office and other commonly used areas throughout the building.

Each student received a map of the building, their schedules and a Chromebook, and was able to walk from classroom to classroom to determine his or her way around the building. Students also got a sneak peek at the new desk set arrangements and classroom protocols, while getting to meet many of the teachers and building administrative members who they’ll be seeing each day at school.

Walt Whitman Birthplace Association will have to raise an additional $2,112 in matching funds, for a total of $23,232.

The grant is one of 29 awards totaling $900,000 for organizations dedicated to the stewardship and promotion of New York’s state parks and historic sites, trails and public lands. The grants will be matched by over $300,000 in private and local funding and will support projects to strengthen Friends groups and enhance public access and recreational opportunities.

Friends groups—nonprofit organizations often made up entirely of volunteers—are essential to the stewardship and promotion of our state park system. These dedicated groups raise private funds for capital projects, perform maintenance tasks, provide educational programming, and promote public use through hosting special events.

Walt Whitman Birthplace Association Receives Grant Trail New York, a statewide non-profit organization, in partnership with the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation.

Parks & Trails New York Executive Director Robin Dropkin said, “It’s inspiring to see the transformational effect of the Park and Trail Partnership Grants and how they are enhancing the ability of Friends groups to make an even greater contribution to the stewardship of New York’s great outdoor spaces. These grant funds will enable groups to leverage more private and federal funding, marshal more volunteer power, and augment the state’s historic investment in parks, trails and other public outdoor places.”

In 2019, the world celebrated Walt Whitman’s 200th Birthday at “the place where it all began” – the site of Walt’s birth on May 31, 1819 – the Walt Whitman Birthplace State Historic Site. Using publicity gained from the Bicentennial Birthday celebration as a springboard into more targeted visibility, WWBA continues the momentum by strengthening their efforts to share Walt Whitman’s legacy with the world.

WWBA has taken major steps in increasing its online presence since the 2020 quarantine began. Every week they offer an event on Zoom featuring poetry reading or lectures. The Park and Trail Partnership

Grant will allow them to further enhance their social media presence by enabling them to create a series of promotional videos - an online video tour of the site, and testimonial videos by scholars and visitors.

In addition to boosting their audience online, The Park and Trail Partnership Grant will increase exposure by funding a highly visible digital display sign installed on WWBA property on Route 110.

This will advertise daily events and upcoming programs on a major thoroughfare.

Executive Director Cynthia Shor said, “The Parks & Trails Partnership Grant will be a major force in our increased visibility both online with our videos and on land with our new electronic sign on Rt. 110.

The videos will describe who we are, and the digital sign will timely describe what we do. The Grant makes possible a Win-Win situation for everyone - New York State Parks, the Birthplace and the Community. We are very grateful for this support.”

Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts, in cooperation with Suffolk County and the Bluegrass Club of Long Island, is pleased to announce the 18th Annual Long Island Bluegrass & Roots Music Festival. Due to ongoing health concerns, this year’s festival will be presented online, featuring a series of six Saturday night concerts beginning September 26, 2020, and five Wednesday night workshops beginning September 30th. BACCA’s Executive Director, Liz Mirarchi, stated, “We are grateful for the support of Suffolk County, ensuring that even during this difficult time we are able to continue the Long Island Bluegrass & Roots Music Festival into its 18th year.

With their help, we can promote our local artists and share their music in a way that is both safe and accessible.”

The Long Island Bluegrass & Roots Music Festival is a celebration of traditional Bluegrass, Americana and Roots Music. The series will be shown on the BACCA YouTube channel, which can be accessed by searching YouTube for Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts and clicking on the “Subscribe” button.

Although there is no fee for

viewing or participating in the broadcasts, BACCA will provide an option for viewers to make a donation during the concerts and workshops.

The contributions will then be used to support arts and cultural events on Long Island through BACCA’s programming.

Our 2020 LineUp features local and regional acts as well as national touring artists.

The Saturday evening shows will be presented as prerecorded concerts, but each will be paired with live commentary by the band members via the Zoom platform, and an interactive feature which will allow the viewers to ask questions and comment in real time. The concerts have been recorded at various locations on Long Island, showing off some of the beautiful and diverse places available to our residents. The workshops will be live, interactive events on five Wednesday evenings.

The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition

For Long Island, Inc.

The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992.

They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring postmastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community.

To accomplish their mission, they focus on prevention, research, education, services, their Lend a Helping Hand program and awareness.

As like many other non-profit organizations, WIBCC holds various fundraising events throughout the year to gain awareness and collect funds in support of their mission. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program. WIBCC will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag.

Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a fatherson social enterprise that was inspired by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down Syndrome and his love of colorful and fun socks, or what he calls his “crazy socks”.

John’s Crazy Socks has agreed to donate 10% of their net sales to WIBCC for every pair of socks purchased from their website, www. johnscrazysocks.com, when you enter the

Next month they will present Pink Flags of October, a month-long event to honor and remember those affected by Breast Cancer.

Hundreds of pink flags will be placed at the entrance of Good Samaritan Hospital. You have the opportunity to purchase a ribbon in honor of or in memory of someone whose life has been affected by Breast Cancer. These ribbons will be tied to the flags and together the flags and ribbons will fly for the entire month of October.

On Sunday, September 27 from 12-2PM at The Cancer Institute (111 Beach Drive in West Islip), there will be a ceremony to celebrate this month-long event, which will include health information, light refreshments and more. If you purchase a ribbon, you can attend the event and place the name of whom it is in honor of or in memory of right on the ribbon itself. If you cannot attend, it will be placed for you.

Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at

bay. The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease.

That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.
