JAKE LAUTO BUILDS PARK BENCHES FOR EAGLE SCOUT PROJECT - For his Eagle Scout project, Elwood-John H. Glenn High School senior Jake Lauto recently built sustainable benches in Elwood Park as a tribute to his grandfather, Joseph Lauto, who often walked in the park. The benches will serve as wonderful resting spots for senior citizens, people with disabilities and pregnant women. Lauto was invited to Huntington Town Hall, where he was recognized by Councilman Sal Ferro, Town Supervisor Ed Smyth and other town officials. His Eagle Scout ceremony was held on Aug. 21.

Elwood BOE Sets Vote For Tuesday, Oct. 18, To Amend 2017 Bond Project
The Elwood School District’s Board of Education adopted a resolution at its July 7 meeting to present a proposal to the community to amend the bond project approved by voters in 2017. The amended project, if approved by voters, would now include a turf athletic field at Elwood-John H. Glenn High School at a cost of an additional $2.45 million.
“Our Board of Education and administration greatly value community input,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert. “After hearing from a large percentage of our community regarding the addition of a turf field, we are asking our community to reconsider this portion of the bond work.”Inaddition to replacing the existing grass field with turf, the project includes the installation of new football and soccer goalposts, as well as lacrosse goals and accessories. Perimeter safety netting would also be installed, and new high jump, long jump and pole vault runways would be added.
If approved, field work would likely be completed next summer.Additional information regarding the proposal will be sent to community residents in early fall. The district is also planning on a community forum to address any questions that community members may have. District residents are encouraged to visit the district’s website, www.elwood.k12. ny.us, for more information on the proposal.

Prior to charming an audience of adoring fans at his Aug. 6 concert at UBS Arena, Barry Manilow sang one special music teacher’s praises. In a private meet-and-greet, the legendary singersongwriter presented the Manilow Music Award to Harborfields High School Choir Director Clare Jackson.Jackson, a 20-year veteran educator who directs the Harborfields High School Choir and Vocal Ensemble, teaches beginning guitar and music theory courses, and previously taught general music and/or choir in all three of the district’s other buildings, received an anonymous nomination for the award and was later voted the winner.
Jackson, with a sense of modesty, reflected on the entire experience with extreme gratitude.
The award, which includes a $5,000 Manilow Bucks credit to purchase instruments for the teacher’s classroom as well as a $5,000 cash prize for the recipient from the Manilow Music Foundation, recognizes outstanding educators who give their heart and soul to their work and their students. Jackson, of course, fits the bill.
During the pre-concert festivities, while presenting Jackson with the award, Manilow commented on her fine work and noted all the positive things he had heard about it. His words spoke volumes about her contributions to the lives of her students and the Harborfields community.
“Teaching means the world to me,” Jackson said. “I have always tried to be the teacher I needed, and had, throughout my life. I have the unique situation where I teach the same kids for four years in a row, so I get to know these students very well. I am grateful that I’m able to be a part of their lives and provide
