Firefighters and rescue squad members gave tours and demonstrations of a fire engine, ambulance and antique truck, and provided information on fire prevention, safety and recruitment.

I am a WWII veteran. In September, I will be 89 years-old. While I was hospitalized in Paris for battle fatigue and trench foot, after the battle of Metz, I wrote the following poem:

Twas a beautiful morning, the time was not late, On the eighth of September, a memorable date.

As we walked down the road before the attack, I prayed to the Lord to please bring me back.

Yes, I was afraid, so was every man there, as we talked, sang and prayed in the cool morning air.

Below in the valley flowed the peaceful Moselle.

It was hard to believe it would soon be a hell.

We jumped in assault boats and paddled ahead.

Many were hit with shrapnel and lead.

We fought up a mountain, our objective was near, But then came a counter-attack from the rear.

We had to fight back to a place near the river, Dig our positions, sit there and shiver.

For three days and nights, we bravely fought back, And tried to repulse their counter-attack.

At last came the orders for us to withdraw.

We had lost many men and could fight no more.

One thousand went over, two hundred came back.

My prayers were answered, I survived the attack.

After the war, I composed this poem: Well here I am, a civilian at last, And ready to start life anew.

An ex-GI with the war in the past, And target for the public to screw.

I’ve been offered a job for fifteen a week, But to me it didn’t sound right.

Before I could open my mouth to speak, I was signed up to work day and night.

Yes, vacations are out and you can’t get a raise.

It’s a hell of a mess I declare.

I wonder if accepting a discharge pays, Or should I have stayed over there.

Yes, America is the land of plenty; Excuse me while I pick up that butt, Yes, America is the land of plenty, But they never say plenty of what!

Over 50 Fair Returns The 4th Annual Over 50 Fair returns to the Melville Marriott on Sunday, September 29th from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The oneday expo is being organized as a “celebration of life on Long Island” for people over 50.

To make it even easier for attendees to participate in this year’s event, there will be free valet parking as well as free scooter rentals for those who need one, compliments of Patriot Mobility, Inc. “The Over 50 Fair is part health and wellness fair, part conference and part activities and lifestyle expo,” said Fair Director Barbara Kaplan, who also organizes Long Island’s popular All Kids Fair every April. With 30 classes covering a variety of disciplines, there will be “something for everyone at the Over 50 Fair,” she added.

This year’s attendees will recognize some of the speakers from last year, while many are new to the Over 50 Fair. Classes will include two comedy shows, Zumba, social media, weight loss, bio-identical hormones, essential oils, and iPad apps.

Over 80 exhibitors will be participating, offering a broad spectrum of services and products relevant to baby boomers and seniors, including local medical and dental practices, financial experts, and education providers, plus weight loss, vitamins, in-home care, and even psychic readings.

Meditation classes will take place all day.

Geraldine Puglia of Deer Park, an “over 50” who has attended all three previous Over 50 Fairs, described last year’s event as “very informational and fun.”

The Fair’s slogan, “60 is the new 50!” summarizes

the philosophy of the event’s organizer, that Americans are living longer and should seek to live life to its fullest.

Says Kaplan, “There are so many opportunities here on Long Island. You just need to know where to look to find them. Many can be found at the Over 50 Fair.”

Free health screenings will be available, such as body fat analysis, blood pressure checks, and oxygen saturation.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their non-perishable food and cash donations for The INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network), a local nonprofit, to exchange for raffle tickets for exciting and valuable prizes. Other non-profit organizations participating include the Lymphatic Research Foundation, SeniorNet at Family Service LeagueL.I., and the Long Island

Rounding out the expo will be photo opportunities with three beauty queens, including Ms. New York Senior America 2013, Virginia Werner.

Back To School

It’s that time of year again. It’s time for classes, homework and networking. School is starting, and students are piling into the classroom.

It was a great summer, one that will never be forgotten; but for many of Long Island’s teens, this school year may prove to be just as good.

For many high school seniors like me, these next few months will be the last opportunity to spend time with friends.

It will be a time of high stress, but also high enjoyment.

As we will all be departing for our respective colleges come next summer, this year

is all the more crucial.

This year is the time where we will solidify the four-year bonds we have created with our classmates.

Parties, skip-days and prom are just some of the times where your social standing will be tested. This is why it is important to have a solid base of friends!

Even though your studies should be your top priority, maintaining friendships with those who have shared your journey thus far will also prove to be crucial.

Even though your current friends may not be planning on attending the same college you are, networking is key. It

is a good idea to get on the good side of many of your classmates because you never know who will become somebody big.

Maybe your friend from Physics class will own a Fortune 500 company and one day offer you a job. Maybe the kid whose locker is right next to yours will give you the connection to your career.

This year, remember the importance of your friends. In addition to being there for you now, they will be there for you later. Life is a game of networks, and your senior year of high school is certainly a suitable time to start.

When Worlds Collide By: Jamie Lynn Ryan With the fall season tends to come an avalanche of entertainment. You have the intersection of football and baseball, new television season premieres and lots of movie and music releases to contend with, making your recreational choices far more interesting for the first time in months. What to watch, what to do…so many decisions, but for a change, the fun, trivial kind.

This collision of all things entertainment never really hit me before until I happened to be attending a New York Mets game on the

very same night as the U.S. Open was taking place next door. As both events let out at seemingly the exact same instant, the rush of people streaming into one another (literally) was quite an experience, with those from Citi Field heading to the train platform and those from the Tennis Center making their way to the subways down below.

It was an interesting contrast – quite the range of diversity on that boardwalk in that moment… people from all walks of life mingling after a night of taking in some of the finest local athletes (well, at the Tennis Center

anyway!). So typically…I guess New Yorkish is the best way to describe the scene.

Add to that the ushering in of the autumn season, everyone being back to school, shaking off the last remnants of summer…it brought a unique sense of excitement to the air.

Transitions are never easy, whether in weather or in life, but – in both instances – they simply must be dealt with.

Like with most things beyond our control, they are better off embraced than shunned.

So welcome autumn with open arms – it’s coming whether you like it or not.

The Brain Aneurysm Center of the North Shore-LIJ Health System’s Cushing Neuroscience Institute (CNI), along with the Brain Aneurysm Foundation (BAF), will host Long Island’s 5th Annual Brain Aneurysm Awareness Four-Mile Fun Run/Two-Mile Walk at Jones Beach State Park on Saturday, September 28th, to promote awareness and education. Proceeds from the walk will benefit CNI’s Brain Aneurysm Center and the BAF to support essential research that may directly benefit those affected and help to reduce the incidence of ruptured aneurysms.

Hundreds of walkers, including brain aneurysm survivors and their family and friends, are expected to attend the fun-filled event.

Many doctors, nurses and staff members from CNI’s Brain Aneurysm Center will also be in attendance to show their support of the many patients they

have treated over the years. Among those who will be attending are David Chalif, MD, and Avi Setton, MD, co-directors of CNI’s Brain Aneurysm Center. “One of the goals of this annual event is to increase awareness about the warning signs of a brain aneurysm,” said Dr. Chalif. “The symptoms can include severe headache, nausea, blurred or double vision, stiff neck or neck pain, pain above or behind the eye, and loss of sensation.”

Registration for the walk begins at 8:30 a.m.; at Jones Beach State Park, Field 5, 1000 Ocean Parkway, Wantagh, NY. The start time is 10am and will be held rain or shine.

Field Of Honor Returns The Field of Honor will be returning to Huntington Town Hall for a fourth consecutive year, with an extended period of time during which the flags will be flying on the front lawn of Town Hall to honor past and present members of our country’s armed forces.

This year, the flags will start going up on September 9th and will remain on display until December 8th. Previously, they had been removed after Thanksgiving.

A project of Kiwanis International nationwide and the Kiwanis Club of Huntington, flags are purchased (at $35 a flag) to recognize a specific individual who has served our country in the military.

A map will help persons locate the flag they have purchased that bears their honoree’s name. Proceeds from the project will be used to send children of

deployed service members to Kiwanis Camp, a weeklong summer camp upstate.

“The Field of Honor has become an institution at Town Hall, as much a sign of Fall as leaves turning color on the trees,” Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone said. “The large participation demonstrates how much Huntingtonians appreciate those who serve our country and those who have served.”

As in the past, purchasers will be able to pick up their flags at a reception to be held in January, or afterward in the Town Hall lobby. For persons who do not wish to keep their flag, the Kiwanis will arrange for an appropriate donation, according to Huntington Kiwanis president Chris Barth. The club is also considering a large, collective flag as an alternative for donors, Barth said.

“We know that people wish to continue supporting the program but do not have need for another flag,” Barth said. “In those cases, the Kiwanis is only too happy to provide a collective flag that they can be part of or find a worthy home for a flag they have purchased.”

For the third consecutive year, the Kiwanis will also be holding their Big 8 10K Run/5K Walk on Saturday, October 19, beginning and ending at Town Hall.

Proceeds raised from that event will go toward Kiwanis International’s Eliminate Project, an effort to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus in Third World countries.

Audubon Society Events

Prior to the opening of school for the 20132014 school year, students throughout the Harborfields Central School District were provided with the opportunity to visit their respective schools, participate in a number of orientation programs and meet teachers and staff members.

At Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School in particular, students in grades three through five were able to navigate the hallways and find their

new classrooms during a special visitation program.

The excitement – especially among the new thirdgraders entering the school for the first time – was palpable. According to new TJL student Jamie Pisano, “I’m excited to meet new friends this school year.”

Sisters Sofi and Jenna Cuti explored the school together and mentioned they were looking forward to meeting their teachers.

A few miles away at Oldfield Middle School, older students were also getting oriented with

their building. While some figured out the best routes to take to their classrooms, others took time to set up their lockers prior to the first day of school. Special programs were also held at Washington Drive Primary School and Harborfields High School.

The Harborfields Central School District looks forward to welcoming all students for the first day of school on Monday, September 9th and wishes all students and staff members a successful year ahead.

King Kullen Grocery Co., Inc. (Bethpage, NY) announced the names of 78 scholarship recipients during its 23rd Annual King Kullen Scholarship Awards Program. King Kullen employees at the company’s 41 store locations - and their children 16 years of age or older – are encouraged each year to submit applications for consideration. The top 2013 awardee, Samantha Greenidge, received a $2,500 scholarship; 25 King Kullen employees received scholarships of $250 each; and 52 children of King Kullen employees received scholarships of $250 each.

She graduated this year from Huntington High School with a 100.24-weighted average after an Advanced Placement course load in English, Government, Microeconomics, Calculus, Statistics and Physics, and Honors Spanish. A member of the Math, Science, English and Spanish National Honor Societies, she nevertheless also found time to volunteer.

In addition to working part-time, from eighth grade through her senior year, Ms. Greenidge averaged 50 hours per year as a volunteer for ALS, a charity close to her heart as her father passed away from ALS when she was 10 years old. Through high school clubs, she spent time

Game Farm Fun The Long Island Game Farm Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo has announced that its inaugural Fall Festival will take place on weekends starting September 28th and running through October 27th.

While many Long Island outdoor locations close down in the fall and do not reopen until spring or summer, the Game Farm will stay open on Saturdays and Sundays in early autumn, even after the regular season ends on Columbus Day, October 11th.

There will be pumpkins, a farm stand, hay maze, pony rides, craft vendors and much more, along with the usual exhibits that the Game Farm provides during the spring and summer seasons.

Hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with prices to be announced in the near future.

The Mental Health Association in Suffolk County (MHAS), Clubhouse of Suffolk and Suffolk County United Veterans are pleased to announce a local campaign to bring awareness about mental illness to our community.

Stigma is commonly cited as a major reason why someone suffering from a mental health disorder does not seek help. Mental Illness Awareness Week is a national campaign established by Congress in 1990 and held the first full week of October. For the past 20 years Mental Illness Awareness Day has been held in Suffolk County during the National Mental Illness Awareness Week, with the goal of reducing stigma and promoting understanding through an educational and motivational conference for people with lived experience in the mental health system, their families and friends, service providers, students and the community.

Colleen Merlo, Associate Executive Director of MHA explains this year’s effort “For twenty years, we have held a very impressive event during the week, with nationally recognized speakers, but this year we

wanted to have a more grassroots effort and involve more partners in order to have a broader impact.

The scope of partners is far beyond what we had imagined. Through partnerships with schools, libraries, faith based groups, civic associations, as well as mental health organizations; we are truly brining awareness to our community.”

Mike Stoltz, Executive Director explained why public education to provide a more realistic view of people living with mental illness is needed now, “The tragedies in Newtown and Colorado have also brought other victims: People with mental illness are mistakenly and hurtfully viewed with a ‘scarlet letter’ “D” for “Dangerous”.

The rash of gun debates and laws has only served to amplify stigmatizing phrases and images.

Mental Illness Awareness Week activities – on Long island and nationally – are geared to give correct images that call attention to the realities that: 1.)

People can and do recover from mental illnesses and psychiatric disabilities; and 2.) Providing accurate information and good public policy supports people to get the help they

need.”

During the week of Sunday, October 6th through Saturday, October 12th anti-stigma events are being coordinated throughout Suffolk County with the goal of reaching every Long Island family. Events include art showcases, film screenings, discussion groups, mental health screening events, and a kick-off event on October 7th at 8:30 a.m. in Hauppauge.

This Community Conversation will generate feedback to send to the White House.

The White House initiated the national conversation on mental health at a conference on June 3rd with President Obama delivering opening remarks and Vice President Biden providing closing remarks and have encouraged Community Conversation in local communities to provide further input into a National effort to raise awareness and increase mental health awareness.

Harvest & Seafood Festival The 10th Annual Fall Harvest and Seafood Festival will be held on Saturday, September 21st and Sunday, September 22nd, at Captree State Park in Babylon, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The festival offers fun for the entire family. Adults can enjoy the sale of fresh Long Island produce and seafood specialties, live music and various other vendors. Activities for children include famous crab races, boat rides, interactive pirate shows, pony rides and much more. All activities are free; however, there is an

$8 vehicle use fee in effect from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Captree State Park is home to New York State’s largest fishing fleet, the Captree Fishing Fleet. The fleet, available year round, is comprised of 30 open and charter fishing boats.

Other features at Captree include fishing piers a large refreshment stand and restaurant, picnic areas, bait and tackle shop and comfort stations.

Walking For A Cure On August 24th, more than 220 people — including 18 teams — took part in the Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc.’s (ADRC) 2nd Annual Riverhead Walk for Alzheimer’s & Clambake in Riverhead. Through the efforts of these individuals and teams who took part in this event, more than $30,000 was raised.

Before the Walk, children had an opportunity to visit the animals at a petting zoo and enjoy pony rides. The Walk kicked off with an opening ceremony, featuring a presentation of the colors by the Riverhead chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, live entertainment by the USO Liberty Bells and a keynote speech

by Town Supervisor Sean Walter, who presented Mel Mullin, President, ADRC, with a proclamation commemorating the event and proclaiming August 24th as Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Day. Mary Ann Malack-Ragona, Executive Director/CEO, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, later joined Supervisor Walter and Riverhead Town Board Members John Dunleavy, James Wooten and Jodi Giglio and “Kevin” the penguin from Long Island Aquarium and Exhibition Center in a ribbon cutting ceremony to officially begin the Walk.

The Walk began at Milton L. Burns Park and ended at

the Long Island Aquarium & Exhibition Center. Walkers carried pinwheels as a way to remember their loved ones who are suffering with or passed away from Alzheimer’s Disease and planted them in the Hope Garden, located in the aquarium’s courtyard.

After the Walk, participants who raised $100 or more

Those in attendance also learned about Alzheimer’s Disease and how to get involved with this critical cause, from advocacy opportunities, the latest in Alzheimer’s research and clinical trial enrollment to support programs and services. It is estimated that 60,000 Long Island residents suffer from this disease.

Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center — which is headquartered in Bay Shore and has a satellite office in Southampton — is the only local Alzheimer’s Disease advocacy and educational facility whose mission is to provide hands-on support and services to families on Long Island and the New York metropolitan area. ADRC works with family members, health care professionals and researchers to ensure quality health care and support to those impacted by Alzheimer’s Disease through care and consultation, information and referral, training, support groups, and caregiver safety products.
