he week prior to the first academic school day, the Harborfields Central School District opened its doors, welcoming students and parents into the district’s school buildings from August 24th to August 28th. Between the hours of 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., students had the opportunity to walk the halls, visit classrooms and set up their lockers in preparation for the new school year.

Turning Pro By: Jamie Lynn Ryan So I recently decided that, seeing as my obsession with photography has only grown stronger over the years, I should probably invest in an actual camera one of these days – you know, the kind with a lens, adjustable settings, the whole deal.

Smartphones are great and all, but realistically, there are certain images that would be better served by something a bit more… professional.

Add to that the fact that, as a working journalist, I have often contemplated delving into the world of freelance photography, taking one of my favorite hobbies and turning it

into, well, something more than random meandering in search of sunsets and landscapes and quirky angles. Of course, I suppose this pursuit would also involve photographing humans from time to time…not exactly my favorite subject.

See, the beauty of a landscape – aside from its quite literal beauty, of course – is that the only changing factors you need to contend with are weather-related. People, well, they’re a whole different story.

They blink, they look away, they grow impatient and start waving their arms and talking before the flash finishes going off… all great material for the photo album. No wonder

Students in the Stony Brook University School of Professional Development (SPD) may now earn “University Badges” – digital icons that demonstrate achievement of a particular skill or set of skills, and which are designed to help the student make academic progress toward achieving another credential such as a graduate certificate or master’s degree.

Offering university badges puts the School of Professional Development at the fore of credentialing programs for graduate students and those in SPD’s non-credit career development programs.

“We are very excited about Stony Brook University badges,” says Ken Lindblom, Associate Dean for Academic Programs in SPD, “because they will allow our students to showcase very specific, workplace-related skills that are highly desirable to employers.”

The badge itself is a digital, hyperlinked icon designed to be used for display on online platforms including Linkedin, Twitter, Facebook and any digital badge backpack, such as Mozilla Open Source. They are a type of credential from the University that when clicked upon leads to an official, protected website describing the achievement the badge represents.

Those who are eligible to enroll in badge courses include current students, non-matriculated graduate students and non-credit students. Some courses are offered online, others are offered only in-person.

According to Lindblom, seven locally-based educators earned a University badge in the newly-created ‘Spanish Language for Educators’ course – SPD’s first badgerelated program – two 24hour, non-credit courses that thoroughly immersed participants in schoolrelated Spanish vocabulary.

Beginning this fall, SPD is offering university badges in several business-related areas, including three in finance and two in human resource management.

In 3087, a woman collapsed during a routine child birth; her bones caved in on each other and pierced all of her vital organs, killing her almost instantly. The doctors couldn’t do anything.

After a thorough examination of the mother’s body, the scientists saw that her bones did not break, but bent in on themselves under the weight of her skin. The scientist examined the newborn, fearing the same outcome. However, they did not find fragile bone structure like the mother had; they found an exceptionally strong bone structure. The newborn had bone structure strength equal to an average ten year-old boy. That cycle of strong boned child births continued throughout the years.

In the year 4012, a different birth mutation occurred. A mother carried a weak-boned child and, when she was born, doctors decided on a mercy killing, calling it “sparing the loss for the future generations.” Through further investigation, scientists discovered that the father had a 75% weak bone probability and killed him too, again to “spare the loss for the future generations.” The people started calling them “mercy killings for the good of the future.”

The last mutation occurred in 4070, when a male and a female produced a child with such strong bone structure that the only appropriate term was titaniumboned. When the mother and father where checked, their genes showed that the mother had all strong bone chromosomes and the father had all strong bone chromosomes, in effect producing

a titanium baby.

Titanium babies are extremely rare, so rare that only one in a thousand showed a titaniumboned person. The government was fighting for territory when they heard the news of an improved gene malfunction; they sought them all, literally taking the children out of their mothers’ arms.

Subsequently, they trained these children to fight for territory.

What the government did not consider was how enraged the public would become at the fact that their children were being taken - and that anger and rage started a civil war.

It is now 5028, and the war still continues. I was born in 5009, making me 19 years old. I am one of the few titanium bones left.

On Tuesday, September 1st, administrators and teachers in the Elwood Union Free School officially welcomed students back for the start of the 20152016 academic year.

They were greeted with enthusiasm by students at all levels and spent the first day getting to know each other, reviewing policies and delving right into academic lessons. The day

also signaled the first day of full-day kindergarten for the district, an initiative made possible through the community’s support of the 2015-2016 budget.

World Alzheimer’s Month detection rates and avoid further burdens on the lives of Alzheimer’s patients and their families, ADRC is asking everyone to participate in the AMARANTH Study. This clinical research study is targeted to men and women between the ages of 55 and 85 who are experiencing gradual and progressive change in memory function over the last six months. The voluntary study will evaluate the safety and effectiveness of an investigational drug in slowing down the progression of Alzheimer’s disease To determine if individuals qualify for the clinical research study, they must undergo a pre-qualification screener. The results of the pre-qualification will determine if the person may be referred to a local center to discuss the study in further detail.

September is World Alzheimer’s Month.

In recognition of this worldwide initiative to raise awareness for the disease, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) is encouraging everyone to learn to spot the signs of dementia, while keeping loved ones in mind who battle or have lost the fight with this disease each day.

Alzheimer’s disease is a degenerative brain disease and is the most common cause of dementia. The neurological disease affects an individual’s ability to perform everyday tasks.

This decline is the result of damage to the areas of the brain involved in cognitive function.

The week prior to the first academic school day, the Harborfields Central School District opened its doors, welcoming students

and parents into the district’s school buildings from August 24th to 28th.

Between the hours of 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., students

had the opportunity to walk the halls, visit classrooms and set up their lockers in preparation for the new school year.

A free Worldwide Photo Walk will be held in Cold Spring Harbor on Saturday, October 3rd, from 1 to 3:30 p.m. This is part of an annual, worldwide event that occurs in hundreds of sites globally, attended by thousands of participants.

There is a limit of up to 50 photographers per walk, ranging from amateur to professional. This event is a fun way to improve your photography skills while socializing with others.

Those who officially register will compete for prizes on a local level, and the winners will go on to compete at a global level.

District Vote Set At the August 26th meeting of the Board of Education, the Harborfields Central School District’s Board of Education supported a resolution to hold a public vote on October 27th to improve district facilities through a bond.

Before making its decision, the Board reviewed extensive documentation from an architect and a group of community residents who have participated on a facilities committee for the past year. The proposed facility improvements will help preserve the integrity of the school buildings, address various infrastructure repairs, improve instructional resources for all, upgrade athletic facilities and provide additional resources for students with disabilities as well as improving access for

students and community members. Under a bond, the district would also be able to take advantage of New York State Building Aid at a return rate of 51 cents for every dollar spent on the majority of projects.

Two separate propositions will be presented for vote. The first is for infrastructure repairs, classroom reorganization, and certain athletic improvements.

Through the first proposition, improvements to Harborfields High School include renovation of certain bathrooms and the replacement of damaged doors, as well as a complete abatement of floor tiles throughout the school. In addition, certain science labs that are outdated and inadequate for today’s lessons would be upgraded. The existing wellness center (which is used by the district’s

physical education classes and district athletes) would be transformed into a multimedia production computer lab and a new, larger wellness center would be built by reconfiguring other rooms.

Through Proposition #1, the high school would see upgrades to the auditorium, gymnasium, and the reconstruction of certain athletic fields with natural grass. Permanent visitor bleachers would be added to Brennan stadium, four tennis courts would be renovated and a new wrestling room would be created.

At Oldfield Middle School, the science labs and the family and consumer science room would be renovated. Middle school fields and tennis courts would be upgraded and the locker rooms would be reconfigured and also renovated. Certain

bathrooms in the school would be upgraded and outside masonry would be repointed. The gymnasium floor would be refinished and the bleachers would be replaced. The lighting system in the school’s auditorium would also be upgraded.

Proposition #1 also carries improvements for Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School and Washington Drive Primary School. At TJL, upgrades include the installation of a new gym floor, replacement of curtains and risers in the multipurpose room, renovation of student bathrooms, and the creation of a multi-sensory learning lab. Outdated playground equipment would be replaced and the western parking area would be renovated and drainage to that area improved. At Washington Drive Primary School, the parking area

would be expanded.

The first proposition would carry a total bond amount of approximately $11.627 million and an increase to taxpayers of approximately $76.20 per year or $6.35 a month for a home with an assessed value of $4,000.

Proposition #2, dependent on the passage of Proposition #1, would extend the improvements in Proposition #1 to include the transition to a synthetic turf field at the high school utilizing an alternative fill, such as Nike infill, as an alternative to crumb rubber.

“It is important for the community to understand that Proposition #2 is very different from the field proposition that was presented to the community two years ago,” said Board of Education President Dr. Thomas McDonagh. “The field we

are now proposing uses an alternative fill and addresses the concerns that residents had at the time.”

The total amount for Proposition #2 is $1.985 million. For the average home with an assessed value of $4,000, the increase would be $13.08 per year if Proposition #2 is approved.

The bond vote is scheduled for Tuesday, October 27th, from 2 to 9 p.m. at Oldfield Middle School. A community forum is slated for Wednesday, October 7th, at 7 p.m. in the middle school auditorium to discuss specifics of the plan. Town and, as the old Greyhound commercial used to say, leave the driving to us, especially if the ride is free.”

“We’re thrilled to see the Town of Huntington join in the international celebration of Car Free Day by providing a free ride on HART buses during these two Fare Free Weeks”, said Rosemary Mascali, Manager of Transit Solutions and Co-Chair of the Car Free Day Long Island event.

“This puts the Town at the leading edge of Long Island municipalities in their efforts to encourage residents to try a commute alternative.”

Fare Free Weeks Passengers will be able to ride the Town of Huntington’s HART buses for free during two weeks later this month, a move Town officials hope will encourage residents to consider HART as an alternative to driving their own cars to work or shop.

From Monday, September 21st through Friday, September 25th, and again from Monday, September 28th through Friday, October 2nd, there will be no fare charged on HART’s fixed route buses.

The promotion is being held in coordination with International Car Free Day on September 22nd. That is an annual event celebrated in over 1,500 cities in 40 countries during which people are encouraged to get around without cars and instead use alternate transportation such as transit, biking or carpooling. Locally, Car Free Day Long Island

will be celebrated for the third consecutive year under the auspices of Transit Solutions and 511NYRideshare, who are partnering with the Town in presenting the Fare Free Weeks.

The goal of the promotion is to increase ridership on HART (Huntington Area Rapid Transit), the only townoperated bus system on Long Island. HART, which has been operating since 1978, revised its routes in January 2013 to adapt to changing demand, improve service and reduce waiting times. This year, HART upgraded its fleet, putting 15 new vehicles into service, including seven 20-passenger clean diesel buses that provide easier maneuverability, greater fuel efficiency and easier passenger access than the 29-passenger vehicles they replaced. HART also has three hybrid buses that are part of the fixed-

route service.

“Over its 35 years in existence, HART has developed a loyal, devoted ridership, composed of people who appreciate the ability to get from place to place in the Town without having to use a car,” Huntington Supervisor Frank Petrone said. “We hope that Fare Free Weeks will prompt new riders to give HART a try, learn for themselves what great service HART provides and become frequent riders after the promotion ends.”

Fare Free Weeks was authorized by a Town Board resolution that passed unanimously at the July 14th Town Board meeting. The resolution noted that the Town would seek sponsorships to offset the lost passenger revenue.

Supervisor Petrone and his Town Board colleagues expressed their appreciation to these businesses and

organizations that have agreed to become Fare Free Weeks sponsors: Covanta Energy; Stop & Shop; Target; The Paramount; Renaissance Downtowns; Clever Devices; the Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce; and the Huntington Station Business Improvement District.

“Each year, we encourage residents to give up their car for a day and find other ways to get around,” Councilman Mark Cuthbertson said.

“We hope that this year, people will hop on a HART bus and, if they like the experience, tell their friends.”

“The Town joins businesses, civic and environmental groups and universities in promoting Car Free Day Long Island because we believe in helping to conserve energy and help the environment,” Councilwoman Susan A.

continue providing lifesaving units to patients and hospitals.”

Donors with O-negative blood type, or “universal donors,” are especially encouraged to donate, as their blood can be used

in emergency situations when there is no time for blood typing.

There is no substitute for blood donations.

Blood products have a limited shelf life, and supplies must be

continually replenished.

A single donation can help save at least three lives when the blood is separated into its components: red blood cells, plasma and platelets. Red blood

cells, for example, are used to make up for blood lost – car accident victims may need as many as 50 or more red cell transfusions.
