American Legion - Greenlawn Post 1244

Boy’s & Girl’s State

The Boy’s and Girl’s State began almost 90 years ago, when two American Legion members, from Illinois, noticed the ‘Youth Pioneer Camps’, promoting Communism, being established around the United States by the Soviet Union. They determined that if we wanted to keep our democratic/republic form of government, then the young people must get the opportunity to learn how it functions. Over the years, Boy’s & Girl’s State became a nationwide program, operated separately in each state. Since then, thousands of students

fictional 51st state, set up under the structure of the state where it is being held. They run for city, county, and state office and hold many other elected and appointed positions. They create and enact bills. They learn how government is supposed to function, and the efforts that go into it. They develop long-lasting relationships with the other students they meet.

The Post got involved with Boy’s & Girl’s State 15 years ago, and happy to say that over that time, they have been able to select over 200 students for the program. They have had great support from the

has helped to make this opportunity available to more and more students. They have been working with Harborfields, Walt Whitman, Huntington, and Commack high schools.

The meeting was attended by 12 (shown in the attached photo) of the 21 students who attended this year’s program. The students each got the opportunity to tell us about their experiences. They then heard from the ‘dignitaries, and proclamations/citations were given to the students.

The meeting was held on Friday, August 11th, at the K of C Hall, in Greenlawn,

Come Support Neighbors Facing Food Insecurity!

Food Collection Drive Friday, Sept. 1 At Stop & Shop, 3126 Jericho Turnpike, East Northport

On Friday, Sept. 1, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., PSEG Long Island’s Power to Feed Long Island summer food collection drive comes to East Northport.

Food collection bins and a drive-through option will be set up at the Stop & Shop supermarket at 3126 Jericho Turnpike, East Northport, where members of the public can donate nonperishable items and household essentials for neighbors facing food insecurity.

With your help and the generous donations of fellow Long Islanders, the initiative aims to collect the equivalent of 50,000 meals during July, August and September. Last year, thanks to your kindness, the equivalent of more than 42,000 meals was collected for the Power to Feed Long Island initiative.

Hundreds of thousands of Long Island families struggle with hunger and food insecurity throughout the year. During the summer months, there is a significant reduction in food donations to local food banks, pantries and programs. Compounding the issue, children are not in school where they can receive free and reducedcost breakfast and lunch. In addition, the pandemic and the increased inflation rate have further strained local food pantries and emergency feeding programs served by Island Harvest.

Please consider donating some of the healthy foods you feed your own family, pet food or personal care items, including:

Nonperishable food (no glass jars, please): Healthy varieties of canned foods, such as low-sodium beans, vegetables, soups, pasta sauces and tomato varieties, tuna and chicken, along with

rice, pasta, popcorn kernels, nut butters, olive and canola oil, spices and pet food.

Household essentials: Toilet paper, paper towels, hand sanitizer, laundry detergent and dish soap.

Personal care items: Toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, soap, shampoo, conditioner, feminine care products and shaving products, antibacterial wipes and washcloths.

Baby care items: Diapers, wipes, formula, creams, ointments and baby wash.

If you cannot participate on this day, please consider making a donation online at www.psegliny.com/feedli

– Island Harvest estimates every dollar is the equivalent of two meals.

The schedule of Power to Feed collection drives is as follows:

· Sept. 1 8 a.m.

– 3 p.m. Stop & Shop3126 Jericho Turnpike, East Northport

· Sept. 15 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. Stop & Shop - 575 West Montauk Highway, West Babylon

Onsite, information will be available from PSEG Long Island on electric service payment plans and programs and ways to save money through energy efficiency options. For additional information on Power to Feed Long Island, visit www.psegliny.com/feedLI.

Assemblyman Durso Hosts 2nd Annual “Assembly Assemble Day”

At Island Harvest Food Bank In Melville

New York State Assemblyman Michael Durso was joined by his colleagues in the Assembly’s Long Island delegation at Island Harvest Food Bank for the 2nd Annual Assembly Assemble Day. Assembly members assisted warehouse volunteers by filling boxes with nutritious food that will be delivered to low-income senior citizens throughout our communities.

The legislators were also introduced to a number of local agencies that provide vital food assistance and support services to individuals and families in need. Many of these agencies work closely with their State representatives in order to better serve their mutual constituency, and to discuss policy initiatives to aid and uplift

underserved communities.

“Assembly Assemble Day at Island Harvest is by far one of my favorite events. My colleagues and I put our political differences aside, rolled up our sleeves, and worked together to pack up healthy meals for seniors in need across Long Island,” said New York State Assemblyman Michael Durso. “Thank you to Island Harvest President & CEO Randi Shubin Dresner, staff and volunteers for everything you do to support our communities and help put a stop to hunger. And a special thanks to Assembly members and staff for taking part in this great day!”

“Thank you to Assemblyman Mike Durso for organizing the second New York Assembly “Assemble Day” at Island

Harvest Food Bank,” said Randi Shubin Dresner, President & CEO of Island Harvest Food Bank.

“Assemblyman Durso and his colleagues from both sides of the aisle assembled 224 boxes of non-perishable food to distribute to low-income seniors across Long Island. The boxes contained more than 7,200 pounds of food and filled seven pallets for distribution. We cannot thank them enough for their support in Albany and on the ground in our warehouse.” Island Harvest Food Bank is the local distributor of the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP), a federally funded, stateadministered program providing non-perishable food to low-income seniors.

Fifteen students who won scholarships to attend the Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) recently completed the school’s four-week Summer Arts Academy. These exceptional young talents (ages 13-17) were selected for this prestigious program based on their audition videos, showcasing their dedication and passion for the arts with a focus on music.

The recipients each have a diverse range of talent and interests in the music field. Nine of the students performed in the Musical Theatre Production program as part of the cast of Disney’s “Finding Nemo, Jr.” which was produced by LIHSA Instructor and Musical Theatre Director Chris Brick and Visiting Artist and Musical Director Adam Tilford. The other recipients learned ensemble and performance techniques in the Art of the Band with musical director and grammy nominated jazz guitarist Tom Guarna and enhanced their audio production and recording techniques with LIHSA Music Instructor Alex Vietheer. This unique summer program allows

students the chance to perform as an ensemble as well as record their own performances in LIHSA’s own professional grade recording studio.

Lindsay Rogan, LIHSA Assistant Principal and Summer Coordinator, said, “We are thrilled to welcome these talented students to the Summer Arts Academy. Their dedication and creativity are commendable, and we look forward to nurturing their artistic growth and inspiring their future accomplishments.”

Fosters Wanted For Two Loving Pets

Due to unfortunate circumstances, the owner of two dogs is looking for a foster. She is presently living in her car, but is actively seeking employment and a new home. She is urgently trying to find an individual to temporarily care for both until she is able to do so again properly.

Wolf is a 10 year old Husky and Kay is a 5 year old Texas Heeler Mix. They are very attached to one another, therefore the foster must be willing to take both. They are friendly, trained, up to date on all shots, good with children and are spayed/neutered. Wolfie does well with all

dogs and cats and Kay is good with medium to large sized dogs. Transportation of the dogs to your home for drop off and pick up would be provided. If you are interested or would like more information, please call Tanya as soon as possible at 914-309-5949.

Health Screenings

Health screenings are a vital component of preventative health care. Specific screenings for older adults can help them stay healthy. Healthline and WebMD recommend older adults schedule these routine tests. The frequency of the screenings may depend on individuals’ health histories, so each test should be discussed with a physician during adults’ annual checkups.

· Blood pressure check

· Blood test to check cholesterol and triglyceride levels

· Colorectal cancer exam starting at age 50

Weight screening to check for gains or losses

· Prostate cancer screening for men age 70 and older

Breast exam and mammogram for women, starting at age 40

· Pap smear and HPV tests at recommended intervals advised by a doctor

“These scholarships are a result of an ongoing partnership between our credit union and the Suffolk Community College Foundation to help people throughout our communities achieve their educational and career goals,” said Michele Dean, CEO & President, Suffolk Credit Union. “By alleviating the cost of college for these hardworking students and their families, we position them for financial stability and empower their future success.”

This year, Ashley Bove of Holbrook received a $6,275 scholarship from the LT Michael P. Murphy Memorial Scholarship,

which was matched by Suffolk Credit Union for a total of $12,550. Edward Freudenberg (Yaphank) was awarded $6,275 by Suffolk Credit Union in honor of the Michael E. Reilly Foundation Memorial Scholarship.

Suffolk Credit Union Achievement Scholarships ranging from $2,150-$6,275 were awarded to Robert Cronin (Aquebogue), Hannah Walsh (Dix Hills), Arshiyan Khan (Selden), Alicia Anthony (Dix Hills), Cristal Lainez-Pixtum (Wyandanch), Amy Boos (Brentwood) and Sun Ji Lee (Commack).

Award recipients were selected based on their academic achievements, extracurricular activities, community involvement and essays. Since partnering with the college four years ago, Suffolk Credit Union has sponsored 36 scholarships totaling over $180,000.

Dr. Edward Bonahue, President of Suffolk County Community College,

commented, “These generous scholarships reflect Suffolk Credit Union’s tradition of serving Long Island as a community-focused institution. We look forward to welcoming the recipients to our campus, where they will undoubtedly thrive.”
