This is 33 By: Jamie Lynn Ryan By the time you read this, I will have celebrated my 33rd birthday, as momentous an occasion as any, if you ask me.

Because, really, every year is a milestone in its own right, a small commemoration of our respective lives as they stand at a given moment in time. Sure, nice round numbers generate parties and extensive recognition; but who’s to say that one year is more significant than the last, or the ones yet to come?

As I write this, I am still two days away from officially marking the transition from 32 to 33, but in some ways, I feel like it’s already come and gone. Have you ever noticed that, when someone

asks your age, there is usually a subtle point in time when you’ve mentally moved on? Slightly over the halfway point, “I just turned 32” becomes “I’ll be 33,” and the years somehow meld together as one giant expanse of time.

What’s the rush?

In my case, anytime my age has occasion to be mentioned, it is usually met with incredulous looks and exclamations of, No way!

You’re lying… You can’t be older than 25, maybe. Well, that would be nice and all, but no – I’ve been a member of the 30+ club for a few years now, and I’m still not quite certain what makes that fact so unbelievable to outsiders.

Of course, so I’m told,

there will come a day – not too far down the line – where I will learn to greatly appreciate this misconception, and savor the countless times I am asked for I.D. (for scratchoff tickets and Rated-R movies, no less), but not today. Today, I am proud to be (almost) 33, and willing to embrace all that comes with this next year, this next milestone.

If we’ve learned anything, it’s that we cannot unwind the clock. Time passes, people come and go, and each day is truly a gift.

Neither dwelling on the past nor wishing for the future will change the present. And what a “present” it is.

Birch Family Services, a New York City non-profit organization is hosting its 3rd Annual 5K Race at the Hudson River Park on November 7th, at 12 p.m.

This event will benefit the 1,500 children and adults with autism and other developmental disabilities that Birch serves daily throughout NYC. Friendship Caravan Performance Posing for a group photo following their August 7th performance at The Jewish Center of the Hamptons, Caravan Dror of the 2015 Tzofim (Israel Scout) Friendship Caravan with members of the Jewish Committee on Scouting of Suffolk County Council (BSA), Theodore Roosevelt Council (BSA) and the Tzofim Friendship Caravan’s Director.

The teenage members of the Northeast Tzofim Friendship Caravan Dror danced, sang, mingled

to Gershow, where the contents are weighed and recycled. Since Can Tabs for Kids has been established, more than $6,500 has been raised.

All of the money raised went to the Sunrise Fund at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, an organization that raises awareness and funds for specific projects to assist local families.

According to the American Childhood Cancer Organization, cancer is the secondleading cause of death among children between the ages of 4 and 14; almost 2,000 children will die of cancer this year in the United States.

The Daniel Brooks Memorial Education Awards are given each year to students who have graduated from the Pediatric Oncology program at Stony Brook

Children’s Hospital and are pursuing post-high school education or training. The award was established in memory of Daniel Brooks, a Port Jefferson resident who completed treatment for leukemia at Stony Brook University Medical Center. He went on to obtain a degree in Special Education then returned to the medical center, where he played a significant role in the development of the School Intervention and Re-Entry Program, which transitions children with cancer back to the classroom following treatment. Sadly, Mr. Brooks’ life was tragically cut short in a motor vehicle accident.

Since its inception in 2003, one hundred six patients have received 287 awards totaling $218,000.

Walking for a Cure Daniel Panaro is 13 years old and was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes this past March. He was quite shocked, especially since he wasn’t feeling ill. He has learned how to administer insulin, carb count and treat all of the highs and lows that come with diabetes...both physically and emotionally.

T1D is an autoimmune disease in which a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin - a hormone essential to turning food into energy. It strikes both

children and adults and is unrelated to diet and lifestyle. With T1D, there are no days off, and there is no cure - yet. It has not been an easy road, but he is determined to not let it slow him down!

Daniel is participating in the JDRF ONE WALK to help find a cure and turn Type One into Type None.

BloodFest a Success Legislator Leslie Kennedy hosted her BloodFest blood drive and food drive in conjunction with Long Island Cares recently outside of her office in the North County Complex.

As part of the BloodFest, Leslie Kennedy’s office held an outdoor cookout for those who donated blood.

Food for the cookout was donated from various restaurants and businesses throughout Smithtown and the surrounding area. Suffolk County’s very own IT band, made up of employees from the Information Technology department came to

entertain those who came to take part in BloodFest.

Every participant who attempted to donate blood will be receiving two complimentary Mets tickets in the mail.

BloodFest had a successful run, with 49 pints of blood gathered, as well as food collected for Long Island Cares. “I am so thankful for everyone who made BloodFest possible, I want to thank New York Blood Service, Long Island Cares, all the local restaurants and businesses that donated food and supplies, and of course everyone who donated lifesaving blood to

the cause,” said Leslie.

On July 29th, Gershow Recycling was honored at The Daniel Brooks Memorial Education Awards for Students with Cancer ceremony for its ongoing involvement with “Can Tabs for Kids,” a program that raises money for the Sunrise Fund at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital in the fight against childhood cancer. Jonathan Abrams, Manager, Gershow Recycling, represented the company at the event, which was held at the Charles Wang Center at Stony Brook University.

As part of the Can Tabs for Kids program, local schools, organizations and municipalities bring in aluminum tabs from soft drinks and pet food cans and place them in collection bins. Throughout the year, the bags are taken out of the bins and brought

with the audience and brought people up on stage to participate. They sang songs in English and in Hebrew about Israel, freedom, peace and friendship. The audience was able to meet the scouts after the performance.

It was an unforgettable experience to share with young and old alike.

The ten youths and their two adult leaders were one of three Friendship Caravans from the Israel Scout summer delegation that arrived in the U.S. in

Long Beach International Film Festival On Friday, August 7th, the Long Beach International Film Festival took the concept of “Dinner and a Movie” to a whole new level, adding the spectacular “Taste on the Beach” event to their widely respected Shorts on the Beach series.

Beginning at 5 p.m. with a red carpet, over 4000 attendees (and a DRONE filming overhead!) reveled in the summer heat at what was billed as the biggest beach party of the summer; checking out the latest in independent short films and live musical performances while sampling the finest local food, wine & craft beers in an intimate theatre setting right on the beach.

Festival goers ended the evening with a fantastic rooftop after party at the nearby Alegria Hotel.

Celebrities in attendance included Former United States Senator (NY) Alfonse D’Amato and Former NY State Assemblyman Harvey Weisenberg from Long Beach who gave an award for community service to the Waterfront Warriors, Film Producer Scott Franklin (Noah), Academy Award Nominated Writer/ Director Bill Plympton, News 12 TV Personality

Elisa DiStefano, Sports Illustrated Swimsuit model Marisa Hunter, Comedian/Actor Joey Kola (Rachel Ray Show), Comedian/Actor Rob Magnotti (Paul Blart Mall Cop 2), Jeffery Gurian of Sirius XM’s Bennington Show, Former NY Jets NFL player and current TV analyst Erik Coleman, Former NY Jets NFL great Wesley Walker, Chef Barret Beyer (Hells Kitchen), Fox 5 TV personality Juliette Huddy, Musician Connell Cruise (Island/Def Jam), Former Miss NY Michelle Medoff, American Idol alum Robbie Rosen, Donna Drake from Live it Up! Voice contestant Raquel Castro and local favorite Benoir.

Then, when the sun went down around 8:45 p.m., visitors were thrilled by the 4th Annual “Shorts on the Beach”; (which was presented by Porsche of South Shore who had several of their hot new rides on display along the boardwalk) the LBIFF’s annual FREE, open to the public event. Among the many interesting titles that were featured included Director Brooke Wagstaff’s animated film and Award-winning Vimeo Staff Pick “Missing U”; an animated tale about the letter “I” and her perilous adventure in search of her missing “U”. As a Long Island highlight, Director Peter Frizalone’s HBO Project Greenlight Top 200 “Mommy” made its World Premiere begging the question “Do you know who is in your house?”

Other films shown included Director Chris Jordan-Bloch’s documentary on an evergrowing world issue “Dryden - The Small Town That Changed the Fracking Game” where the power of community takes on the power of fracking; Director/Producer

Stephanie Donnelly’s narrative/comedy “The Cannoli” where a Long Island family dinner turns tragic and a choice must be made between dessert and family; Director Sarah Menzies’ San Diego Surf Film Festival Best Short winning documentary “Catch It”, which follows Léa Brassy as her nomadic lifestyle takes a pause and she finds serenity in the Arctic surf of Northern Norway; and Croatian Director Antoneta Alamat Kusijanovi’s World Premiere of “Eye for an Eye”, in which child’s play turns into a showdown of imagination and discipline.

Long Beach International Film Festival Programmer Steve Shor recently said of the event, “The Shorts on the Beach program is a wonderful representation of what is in store for the Long Beach International Film Festival in September.

The program opened with the Oscar winning short Feast from Walt Disney Animation.

Additional animated shorts included Deep End by Oscar nominee Bill Plympton and Bear Story- a Chilean computer animated short (considered one of the best this year). In

the short documentary arena, we had Trust Design by Interior Design Magazine and Dryden

by EarthJustice. Finally, the program included some wonderful Narrative submissions from New York based directors and Universities”.

The Festival will celebrate its 4th anniversary this year from September 24th through 27th and will screen an international slate of films, including feature-length narrative, documentary, short and animated that will compete for a series of Jury, Festival Honors and Audience Awards. A new addition for 2015 LBIFF includes the Joan Jett Music Film Series. There will also be exhibiting films in the categories of Action Sports, Environmental, Art & Family.

Host families come in all shapes and sizes, but they all share one thing in common - the excitement of bringing in an international student as another member of the family and attending their district public high school.

So here are the typical questions: • Where do they come from? Over 48 countries, and they come fully insured, including a

medical policy • How long do they stay?

5 months, 10 months or 12 month programs • How old are they? 15-18 ½ years old • Do they know English?

Yes, they have all gone through an English proficiency test, are pre-screened and have to apply for the programs.

They have to maintain a “C” average and carry at least 4 academic classes.

Cliff “Kip” Johannesen, who at one point was paralyzed and in a wheelchair but now is able to walk with the assistance of canes is offering services as a U.S. Coast Guard Licensed Captain and P.A.D.I Master Diver to people with disabilities in the Long Island/NYC Area.

With his boat, docked in Lindenhurst, he is volunteering his spare time to take children with disabilities (along with a parent or guardian) or disabled veterans on fishing, snorkeling and boating trips in the Great South Bay.
