We never had to put our kids in the hospital or worry about how our lives would be impacted by a serious illness like that. RMHC takes the load off the families by giving them a place to stay, meals to eat and a way to keep their whole family together.”

The Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk, Inc. – a not-forprofit 501(c)(3) communitybased organization – has been serving Suffolk County since 1967. It is the county’s federally designated Community Action Agency, designed to assist low-income families and individuals. The agency’s mission is to promote a goal of self-sufficiency by broadening the minds of children, revitalizing communities, and assisting families and children in need through coordination of public and private resources. Childcare To Become More Affordable For Many Low And Moderate Income Families
The Suffolk County Sheriff Office’s Pet Network also houses a database where animals can be tracked and located. Using their database, they are able to detect and locate missing pets and send out alerts to the deputy sheriff’s department and through social media.

“A strong childcare system helps buttress a strong economy,” said Adrian Fassett, C.E.O. of the Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk, Inc., a Patchogue-based not-forprofit that own and operates Way to Grow Child Care Learning Center in East Patchogue.
Suffolk County residents got a boost in paying for childcare. Beginning August 1, 2022, as part of the 202223 New York State budget, families earning up to 300 percent of the federal poverty level will qualify for assistance. Previously, the income standard set by the State for childcare subsidies was 200 percent. Assistance will be administered locally by the Suffolk and Nassau counties departments of Social Services.
Paws Of War Partners With Suffolk County Sheriff’s Dept. To Provide Free Microchipping And Pet IDs
Paws of War recently hosted a microchipping and pet identification service event at the non-profit’s Nesconset headquarters alongside the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department’s Pet Network and Sheriff Errol D. Toulon Jr. The free event provided services to over 30 animals whose owners included veterans, first responders and members of the Long Island“Forcommunity.pet owners, especially veterans and first responders, their service animals are more than just pets; they are a support system and caregivers. During the summer it is easy for animals to wander and get lost. Through our microchipping and database program, and with the help of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department, we can ensure that any lost pets will be found and returned safely to their rightful owners,” said Robert Misseri, Founder and President of Paws of War. The microchips, which are the size of a large grain of rice, are implanted under the animal’s skin behind the shoulder blades. For service animals, microchips are used to provide a permanent form of identification. The microchip can also identify and track an animal’s movements. In the event a service animal gets lost, you can use a microchip scanner to identify the pet’s owner. Through Paws of War’s database, owners can be contacted and have their animals safely returned.
“As Suffolk County Sheriff my priority is keeping residents safe, and that extends to the fourlegged members of our communities. I would like to thank Paws of War for the work they do for our Veterans and for partnering with us on these free pet safety events. Pets that are both equipped with a microchip and enrolled in the Sheriff’s Lost Pet Network have double the chance of being reunited with their family,” said Sheriff Errol D. Toulon, Jr. Through Paws of War’s Mobile Veterinary Clinic, the nonprofit gives service animals access to microchipping at no cost. Veterinary costs for service animals and pets are near an all-time high. Thanks to Paws of War’s programs, veterans and first responders have one less expense to worry about. The wellness of service animals is essential and allows them to assist owners who are suffering from the emotional and physical effects of war. In addition to microchipping and Pet ID services, veterans also receive free dog food, leashes, collars and other amenities. “The reality is that working people can’t get to their jobs if they don’t have a quality, safe place to send their children. More workers are returning to an office setting following more than two years of working from home and we need to do all we can to ensure they have access to excellent childcare.”According to the Governor’s office, thousands of families will now be eligible for childcare subsidies as part of a $7 billion expansion of childcare funding in New York State. “I know firsthand how a lack of childcare can hurt your career, your family and your future, as a working mother when I was forced to leave my job to care for my child,” Governor Hochul said. “These historic investments in New York State’s childcare system will allow us to forge a new path forward for parents, especially mothers. It is the right thing to do, the moral thing to do, and will supercharge our economic recovery and support working families. Childcare is an essential service, and in New York, we will continue to do everything in our power to make sure more working families have access to Parentsit.” can be eligible if they are employed and earn no more than the 300 percent threshold, are enrolled in an education or training program, in mental health or substance abuse treatment, or are in an emergency situation of short duration. For example, a family of four can earn up to $83,250 annually and still be eligible for subsidized childcare.Tofind out if you are eligible under these new guidelines, please contact your local county Department of Social Services: Suffolk (631) 8543349, Nassau (516) 2278519. The Harborfields High School girls volleyball team recently earned the 2022 United States Marine Corps/American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award. For the past 30 years, the USMC/AVCA team academic award has honored volleyball teams that maintain a year-long grade-point average of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale or 4.1 on a 5.0 scale “This national recognition is truly an incredible honor,” Athletic Director Rob Franco said. “Knowing the hard work it takes to participate in interscholastic athletics makes this accomplishment all the more impressive, and we are so proud of our team and coaches.”
Harborfields High School Girls Volleyball Team Earns National Recognition
“To be nationally honored over the course of the entire year is beyond our expectations,” coach Suzanne Legge said. “To have a 3.3 team average for one quarter is fantastic, but to maintain a 3.3 or higher team average for the entire year is something to really celebrate. We couldn’t be prouder of this team and everyone behind them that led the way, including all of their teachers, the entire staff, the administration and the board of education. We thank the athletes in the program and their parents so much for all of their support. This doesn’t happen without the collective efforts of everyone.”

The Hampton Classic will host a live discussion on Clubhouse to discuss the new schedule and footing on Thursday, March 10 at 6:00 p.m. All are invited to participate. The footing is being installed by Travis Gould and his JTWG, Inc. It is engineered using the same state-of-the-art processes that were used for the new footing in the International Arena at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center in Wellington, Florida and Tryon Stadium in Tryon, North Carolina, both of which have received rave reviews. The laboratory design and modeling of the footing for those “UltraCompetition” arenas was done by Bill Hawe, CEO of iEquiTek, LLC, who is overseeing the project for the Hampton Classic. The state-of-the-art processes being employed for the Hampton Classic by this team will also be used for the 2023 Longines FEI Jumping World CupTM Finals in Omaha.
CSI 5* And 2* Competitions
The new CSI 5* status means an increase in prize money to more than $1 million, with $410,000 for the Classic’s featured Hampton Classic Grand Prix on Sunday, September 4. New all-weather footing in the Grand Prix Ring will allow for an expanded schedule featuring the 5* and 2* as well as some new divisions.“Weare truly excited about hosting a CSI 5* and having the opportunity to expand our schedule,” said Shanette Barth Cohen, the Classic’s Executive Director. “Our new allweather footing enables us to hold more classes in the Grand Prix Ring and our move to 5* status is sure to attract the best horses and riders from all across the country and beyond.”

Blood Emergency: Blood And Platelet Donors Urgently Needed New York Blood Center (NYBC) announced a blood emergency today, as the region’s ongoing heatwave, summer travel, and a recent spike in COVID-19 cases have caused a significant decrease in donations over the past several weeks. Hospitals and patients rely upon a steady flow of donors to receive lifesaving blood donations, but these factors have caused the blood supply to become unstable. The blood supply currently stands at a 1-2-day level, which is well below the ideal level of 5-7-days.
The Hampton Classic Horse Show, one of the country’s most prestigious hunter-jumper horse shows, will unveil new state-of-the-art all-weather footing in its Grand Prix Ring and a new schedule with FEI CSI 5* and 2* competitions when it returns for its 46th edition, August 28-September 4
NYBC hosts blood drives every day in addition to their 19 area donor centers in order to reach donors and meet local hospital needs.
“I think this is fantastic news,” said seven-time Hampton Classic Grand Prix champion McLain Ward. “The Hampton Classic has always been one of our sport’s premier events, equal to any Five Star. Now with official Five Star status plus its new footing that has proven at Wellington to be as good as there is, the Hampton Classic will solidify its position as one of the most outstanding events in the and horse welfare. This helps change the sport for the better. We are very excited to partner with the Hampton Classic on this project.”TheGrand Prix Ring is the centerpiece of the Classic’s six show rings. Longines is the Official Timekeeper for the Hampton Classic which will also be adding new divisions such as Low Adult and Children’s Jumpers, Low Adult and Children’s Hunters and 3’6” High Performance Hunters. This will allow some exhibitors who have never previously had the chance to ride at the Hampton Classic to do so. More details on this year’s schedule will be forthcoming soon. before, during and after working out to maintain salt-water balance. Avoid caffeine and alcoholic beverages.3.Exercise smarter, not harder. Plan your workout for the cooler parts of the day – either early morning or early evening when the sun’s radiation is at its least. If you must exercise during the hottest part of the day or in high humidity, decrease exercise intensity and duration. And remember, you can get a great workout indoors by going to a gym or walking at the mall.4. Dress the part. Wear minimal amounts of clothing that allow for quick evaporation of sweat. Choose lightweight, lightcolored and breathable fabrics, such as cotton.
5. Choose Fresh Veggies. Take advantage of fresh seasonal veggies. Load up skewers with mushrooms, peppers, cherry tomatoes, zucchini, yellow squash or other veggies. Spray lightly with olive oil cooking spray and grill until lightly blackened.

The Elwood School District’s Board of Education adopted a resolution at its July 7 meeting to present a proposal to the community to amend the bond project approved by voters in 2017. The amended project, if approved by voters, would now include a turf athletic field at Elwood-John H. Glenn High School at a cost of an additional $2.45 million.“OurBoard of Education and administration greatly value community input,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert. “After hearing from a large percentage of our community regarding the addition of a turf field, we are asking our community to reconsider this portion of the bond work.”Inaddition to replacing the existing grass field with turf, the project includes the installation of new football and soccer goalposts, as well as lacrosse goals and accessories. Perimeter safety netting would also be installed, and new high jump, long jump and pole vault runways would be added.Ifapproved, field work would likely be completed next summer.
Additional information regarding the proposal will be sent to community residents in early fall. The district is also planning on a community forum to address any questions that community members may have. District residents are encouraged to visit the district’s website, www. elwood.k12.ny.us, for more information on the proposal.Thevote is set for Tuesday, Oct. 18, from 6 a.m.-9 p.m. in the Elwood Middle School cafeteria. All eligible residents are encouraged to participate in this important vote!
