Meet Guy. He’s a local business owner, former rock bassist, and current fan of LEDs. It didn’t hurt that he got $5,900 in rebates to replace his store’s old lighting with energy-efficient fixtures.* He says his store and his guitars look great in the new LED glow. And, with the monthly energy cost savings, he couldn’t be happier. How can we help your small business save?

Five Young Entrepreneurs From Harborfields Win National Awards

Five Harborfields High School students were recently named national winners in the second annual national Junior Achievement Social Innovation Challenge. The five students were all members of the Harborfields Business and Entrepreneurship Academy, which is facilitated by the school’s business department coordinator, Dr. Alison Matthews.

The Challenge is a national competition in which high school students submit their innovative ideas for improving and making an impact on their communities. The winning students were selected from more than 90 participating teams from across the country, and will have the opportunity to further develop their entrepreneurial concepts with the assistance of experts from Challenge

sponsor Chick-fil-A.

Nahrahel Louis won first place for “Clothing for a Cause,” a social enterprise that partners with organizations to create clothing for fundraising.

Nahrahel’s company idea focused on collaboration with schools, businesses, nonprofits and other organizations to create custom apparel that reflects their unique brand and message, handling the entire process – from design to production, and even shipping – to ensure a seamless and effortless experience for their partners.

Gabriella DiMartino, Nabeeha Ilyas, Elizabeth Kelly and Ivie Mergille won third place for “Purte.” Inpired by families living without adequate heating and cooling, and recognizing the need for affordable climate innovations, the Purte team designed a

Legislator Donnelly Honors Local “Operation Safe Stop” Poster Contest Co-Winners

Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) recently honored sisters Abby and Adalynn Adams, students at Signal Hill Elementary School in Dix Hills, as the co-winners of the Legislative District 17

“Operation Safe Stop” poster contest. Established in 2018, the annual competition invites elementary school students to creatively help promote awareness about the dangers of passing a stopped school bus.

Each year, one poster is selected from all of those submitted to be used as part of a countywide message to be disseminated by the Suffolk County Police Department. Entries were submitted by students from throughout Legislator Donnelly’s district and Abby and Abigail’s were selected as the co-winners. They were honored with County Proclamations by Legislator Donnelly, who was joined

by Abby and Adalynn’s parents, brother, teachers, Half Hollow School District Superintendent Dr. Patrick Harrigan and Principal Maryann Fasciana at Signal Hill on June 20.

“Of the many entries I received for this year’s competition, two of them stood out – and the artists happened to be sisters,” said Legislator Donnelly. “I thank Abby and Adalynn and all who entered the contest for using their artistic abilities to help ensure we all act in a safe manner each day!”

Resolution No. 40-2018, established the “Operation Safe Stop” public education campaign for elementary school students to promote school bus safety. According to the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee, approximately 50,000 motorists statewide illegally pass school buses annually.

John Glenn High School Wins Eighth Consecutive School Of Distinction Designation

For the eighth consecutive year, Elwood-John H. Glenn High School has been recognized as a New York State Public High School Athletic Association Scholar-Athlete School of Distinction. Only 84 schools in the state earned this status for 2022-2023.

The purpose of the award is to inspire varsity coaches to challenge their teams to achieve a statewide academic honor. To earn School of Distinction recognition, 100% of a school’s varsity teams must qualify for and receive the Scholar-Athlete team award. School of Distinction winners will be presented with a certificate and a commemorative award at their local athletic director workshop this fall.

Local Scout Presented With Boy Scout Jewish Religious Emblem

The first eleven points of the Boy Scout Law must be demonstrated in order to go from one rank to the next, including Eagle.

The 12th point --”A Scout is Reverent”-- can be demonstrated in a variety of ways including the earning of the religious award of the Scout’s individual faith.

As with all the religious emblems, the Ner Tamid Award, earned by Jewish Boy Scouts, is not an award for

Scouting skills but rather an emblem authorized by the Boy Scouts of America to be worn on the Scout’s uniform after satisfactory completion of the necessary requirements.  This award, earned by Jewish Boy Scouts 11 to 18, requires study concerned with home observance, synagogue worship, Jewish study, the American Jewish community, world Jewry, and a service project.

In observance of the 12th point of the Scout Law, East Northport resident Life Scout Ian Loring of Troop 8 (East Northport) was presented with the Ner Tamid Emblem on June 13 at the Troop 8 Spring Court of Honor. It was also presented at his Bar Mitzvah on June 17th at the East Northport Jewish Center by JCOS PR Chair Phyllis Stein.  Scout Loring was presented with a medal, certificate, and the

special purple and silver “scouting religious emblem knot” that is sewn onto his uniform.

Boy Scout Ian Loring is the son of Joanne and Eric Loring of East Northport, younger brother of Esther Loring, and grandson of Rose-Ellen Ellingwood and Charles Loring of Bangor, Maine, and Fran and Harvey Fixman of Woodbury, NY.
