Recently a 4-week session hosted by The Social Brain and Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead started to help survivors learn social skills, build friendships, find cues from others and interact with peers. The first session was on August 6th and the following 2 sessions will be on August 20th and 27th.

Additionally, in only two days (on August 16th), The Social Brain will host a “Basket Night Fundraiser” at the Sound Beach Property Owners Association at 6:30PM! The Social Brain is a brand new 501(c)(3) non profit in the state of New York. They are on the brink of breaking through as one of the most unique and helpful organizations that serves those suffering from a brain injury. Their mission is to provide brain injury survivors the opportunity to build friendships through socialization and reduced isolation.

This organization began in January 2019 when a group of individuals, families and professionals joined together to brainstorm ideas of how they can help brain injury survivors socialize and partake in various hobbies together. Many survivors spend much of their lives in and out of rehab and home feeling isolated, but The Social Brain formed to change that. After hosting various events for survivors such as a day at Sweetbriar Nature Center, a Bowling Event, a Library Day and an afternoon at Four Star Ranch, it was obvious that they were reaching a population in need. Just last month, The Social Brain was granted 501(c)(3) status in the state of New York and they have just started working out of a community center located at 202 Middle Country Road in Middle Island.

The Social Brain operates solely on volunteers and their outreach comes not only from word of mouth, but from help through their recent partnerships with local hospitals, school districts, neurology departments, Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead and St. Joseph’s College.

Survivors from all over Long Island are welcome to get involved with The Social Brain. On average, each event they host has about 30-40 participates and there is no age restrictions.

The Marcum Challenge is a 3.5-mile charity run at Jones Beach State Park that PSEG Long Island supported this year with more than 1,000 participants who raised more than $31,500 for four Long Island charities: The Long lsland Children’s Museum; Children’s Medical Fund of New York; Long Island Cares, Inc. – The Harry Chapin Food Bank; and the Nassau County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

“I am so proud of our employees’ commitment to this wonderful event where we can raise money for four great local charities while spending some time together outside the office,” said Daniel Eichhorn, president and COO, PSEG Long Island. “Whether relaxing under the tent, walking the course with co-workers or running it competitively – we all supported our community here tonight.”

Jimenez, who placed in the top 10 of PSEG Long Island runners, has supported this event for several years.

communities we serve,” said Jorge Jimenez, PSEG Long Island director of Customer Service and Northport resident. “We are, once again, the largest fundraiser at the Marcum Challenge — three years in a row.”

The annual run brings out thousands of employees from more than 200 companies across Long Island for an evening of camaraderie, fun and fitness.

Free Smoking Cessation Classes Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today invited residents who use tobacco and are seeking assistance in breaking their addiction to sign up for free smoking cessation classes.

The Learn to Be…Tobacco Free program offers assistance with planning, support, counseling and provides over-the counter medications to participants who are medically eligible.

“Breaking an addiction to tobacco is never easy but with the right support network it can literally save one’s life,” said Suffolk County Executive Bellone.

“Since the inception of this program, thousands of smokers have participated in the program and increased their chances of succeeding in this task. I encourage anyone who is struggling to quit, to sign up for these informative classes and get healthier.”

Dr. James Tomarken, Commissioner of Suffolk County Department of Health Services, said: “We know more than ever about what works and what doesn’t when it comes to tobacco cessation. Studies have shown that tobacco users who try to break their addiction with behavioral support are more likely to be successful than those who try to do so without support.”

The Office of Health Education staff has been facilitating tobacco cessation services through the Learn to Be …Tobacco Free program for 18 years, serving more than 19,000 residents. The program is a seven-week course that uses a comprehensive

Video Scholarship Contest The Pedestrian Education Video Scholarship Competition is offered by the New York State Coalition for Transportation Safety.

The competition is part of the Walk Safe Long Island campaign organized by the Long Island Health Collaborative in partnership with the Coalition and health and safety educators from across Nassau and Suffolk Counties.

Some Long Island communities have a particularly poor driving record and are among the worst in the state.

When New York State communities were ranked by the number of pedestrian crashes that

occurred between 2009 and 2013, Long Island communities accounted for eight of the top twenty communities ranked, and Hempstead had the highest number of crashes of all communities in upstate New York and Long Island.

Other ranked communities included Brookhaven (number 7), Islip (number 8), Oyster Bay (number 9), N. Hempstead (number 10), Babylon (number 11), Huntington (number 14), and Freeport (number 19).

For this scholarship contest, students simply need to create a short video that illustrates one or more of the Vehicle and Traffic Laws for Pedestrian Enforcement. The intent of the competition is

PET-A-PALOOZA FUNDRAISER - One hundred puppies and kittens are making their adoption debut at Little Shelter’s Pet-A-Palooza on Saturday & Sunday, August 17th & 18th. Little Shelter is located at 33 Warner Rd, Huntington.

One hundred puppies and kittens are making their adoption debut at Little Shelter’s Pet-APalooza on Saturday & Sunday, August 17th & 18th. Little Shelter is located at 33 Warner Rd, Huntington.

With such variety in color, breed, age, and size, Little Shelter is anticipating eager families to be waiting at the gate Saturday morning to be the first to adopt. Around three thousand guests from the tri-state area come to this annual event, but this year’s adoptees are looking cuter than ever and are expected to bring out even larger crowds.

Besides puppies and kittens, Little Shelter also has hundreds of dogs and cats of every variety who will be up for adoption.

“One of the amazing things about this event is the adult and senior dog and cats have a way of stealing the show. People come out to meet the puppies and kittens, but ultimately adopt an adult instead. Every year we see a number of our senior and overlooked companions adopted through this event,” commented Little Shelter Executive Director David Ceely.

The fun and excitement doesn’t stop there, all weekend long there are many activities for the whole family including a kids corner, food, a Blessing Of The Animals, and more. The weekend concludes with the live drawing of Little Shelter’s infamous Chinese Auction.

Known as one of the largest in the country, this auction

boasts over 300 prizes.

Pet-A-Palooza is a free event that is open to the public and is both kid and pet friendly. Those interested in adopting a puppy or a kitten are encourage to arrive early.

Pet Pals Visit Harborfields Students Students enrolled in the Extended School Year Program at Washington Drive Primary School and Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School in the Harborfields Central School District enjoyed a visit from some furry friends on Aug. 2. Held in the Washington Drive library, an educational Pet Pals event

introduced students to rabbits, guinea pigs and other small animals.

June Devitto, a representative from the Suffolk County Farm – Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County, taught children all about the popular pets. She reviewed what the various animals eat, their characteristics, the toys that they play with and the types

of habitats in which they thrive. Together, the group sang the children’s song, “Do Your Ears Hang Low?” Ms. Devitto also answered students’ questions about the animals and engaged them by asking what pets they have at home.

As a special highlight, the children had PET PALS VISIT HARBORFIELDS STUDENTS - Students in Harborfields had the several opportunities to opportunity to meet a guinea pig, among other cuddly animals, brought to the district pet their new pals. by the Pet Pals program. USDAN SUMMER CAMPS’ FUNDRAISING GALA - Usdan Summer Camp for the Arts’ annual fundraising gala — dubbed The Sassafras Bash — was held on July 25th on and around the camp’s 140-acre campus. The event honored Usdan alum and publisher of the Harry Potter book series, Arthur Levine, and Brentwood High School’s Christina Hellbock and Kelly Hillard for contributions to the community.

Art projects and performances were spread throughout the landscape and included songs from the cast of “Singin’ In the Rain,” a movement piece from students in the Choreographic Institute, an encore presentation of “Knight Music” — a collaborative composition created by International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE) and campers in Usdan’s Chess and Music programs as well as moving speeches and incredible student performances from the stage.
