During a recent ceremony at Elwood Middle School, the Elwood Union Free School District Board of Education dedicated a tree to past Board of Education President Julia Fried. The tree, which is located in the courtyard of Elwood Middle School, was dedicated to Mrs. Fried, who tragically lost

her battle with pancreatic cancer in 2020. A board member beginning in 2014, she served the district as both board president and vice president and was an integral part of the school community. She served as an active member of the PTA and Elwood Educational Endowment, as well as leader for other district initiatives.

At the touching ceremony, family, friends, current board members and district administrators shared stories of the long-lasting effects Mrs. Fried left on the Elwood community through her tireless work in service to the students, staff and community members of the Elwood Union Free School District.

Eleven Northport High School seniors enrolled in the district’s Program of Resilient Teens (PORT) enjoyed a special graduation ceremony held at the William J. Brosnan building on June 21. While the program was established five years ago, this was its first separate graduation ceremony to celebrate the program’s seniors. As the celebration began,

the district’s Director of Student Support Services Shannon Dantuono acknowledged the unique attributes of these students and their exceptional accomplishments during their time with the district. “The students here today have mastered the art of resilience while also demonstrating other equally important qualities that will serve them well in the future” she said during

her commencement speech. Teachers and counselors each shared a specific word to describe the eleven students. These words, called “warrior qualities,” ranged from “fierce” to “strength.” “It is our hope that you will carry these warrior qualities with you as you face the next chapter in your journey,” said Mrs. Dantuono.

The Northport-East Northport Board of Education has appointed Robert Dennis as principal of Northport High School. Mr. Dennis is a lifelong Northport-East Northport resident, having graduated from Northport High School before beginning his 13 year career in education which began as an Italian and Spanish teacher at his alma mater. Mr. Dennis most recently served as principal of North Shore Middle School for four years. Prior to that role, he held assistant principal and chairperson of world language and ESL positions at the PlainviewOld Bethpage School District. He received his bachelor’s degree in secondary education from Providence University and

Legislator Berland Co-Hosts Annual Anne Frank Memorial Garden Ceremony

Suffolk County Majority Leader Susan A. Berland (D-Dix Hills) joined Supervisor Chad Lupinacci on Sunday, July 11, 2021 at Arboretum Park to co-host the Town of Huntington’s annual Anne Frank Memorial Garden Ceremony in recognition of Anne Frank’s 92nd Birthday. The ceremony featured remarks from guest speaker Rachel Epstein, a Holocaust survivor; Rabbi Howard Buechler from the Dix Hills Jewish Center; Rabbi Orrin Krublit from the South Huntington Jewish Center; and Rabbi Paul Swerdlow, lead chaplain at the Northport VA Medical Center. The Presentation of Colors was provided by Jewish War Veterans Post #488 and refreshments were served courtesy of Hummel Hummel Bakery of East Northport and King Kullen. After the ceremony, guests visited The Anne Frank Memorial Garden in the park which symbolically captures the

journey of Anne Frank’s life. The circular pathway through the garden leads to a sculpture of a lace wedding dress reflective of Anne’s childhood innocence and adolescent hopes and dreams which were cut short. The empty dress symbolizes our temporary physical presence having possibility of continued lasting memory and the armorlike lace structure of the dress is vulnerable yet fearless, representing the eternal strength that Anne held within her. Along the path visitors can see quotes from Anne’s diary as well as a Horse-Chestnut tree, the same type of tree that Anne described seeing from the small window in the attic. “I was proud to once again co-host the Annual Anne Frank Memorial Ceremony. This touching event honors the memory of Anne Frank and recalls her legacy, her courage in the face of unspeakable tragedy and her genuine belief in the goodness of mankind despite the

ugliness of war and discrimination. May Anne’s legacy and wisdom continue to teach and inspire us for generations to come,” said Legislator Susan A. Berland. “Thank you to Rachel Epstein for graciously sharing her story as a Holocaust survivor, Rabbi Buechler, Rabbi Krublit and Rabbi Swerdlow, and all the members of our community who attended.” “While we all come from different backgrounds and walks of life, we can all relate to the humanity and innocence of Anne Frank’s writings, which remind us that in a world filled with light, there is opportunity for evil to trespass against us. Leisure activities may be widely viewed as fun ways to fill up free time, but the benefits of leisure activities extend beyond beating boredom. A 2011 analysis published in the journal BBA Molecular Basis of Disease found that leisure activities have a positive impact on cognitive function and dementia. The analysis, conducted by researchers with the Aging Research Center in Stockholm who examined various studies regarding the relationship between certain activities and cognitive function, defined leisure activity as the voluntary use of free time for activities outside the home. The food supply at food banks historically drops off in summertime. Coupled with the pandemic and its after-effects, replenishing the diminishing food supply at this time is even more urgent. Enter Power to Feed Long Island – a partnership between Island Harvest Food Bank and PSEG Long Island to rally the Long Island community to donate food to support neighbors facing food insecurity. Bear Cub Scouts Of Pack 403 Are Taught Scouting Skills By Boy Scouts Of Troop 125 During the summer break, scouting continues with backyard camping skills. Boy Scout Troop 125’s scouts Jake S., Jake B., and Jack F. spent the afternoon of July 14 teaching five scouts of the 9-year-old Bear Cub Scouts of Den 10 of Cub Scout Pack 403 (Commack) at the backyard home of First Class Scout Jake S. The Bears learned how to pitch and take down a tent, knife safety and earn their whittling chip (knife safety award). Explained co-Den Leader/Scout Mom Danielle Shabronsky, “How this came aboutThe pandemic put the Cub Scouts very behind in the skill set needed to meet this year’s Bear requirements that would allow the youths to rank up to the Junior Webelos for next September. In talking with co-Den Leader Eden Weisberg and Den Chief (Boy Scout) Jake S of Boy Scout Troop 125, we thought having a few meetings focusing only on skills needed, which would allow the boys to meet the requirements before end of summer. Jake asked a few of his troop mates to help lead the meeting to teach the Cubs how

to pitch and take down a tent and whittle along with knife safety. Jake, Jack, and Jake got together before the meeting and planned the best ways to teach the younger boys. They started with basics -safety measures, practicing skills and a Q and A at the end. The meeting lasted approximately an hour and a half.” Borrowing the family tent from Scout Jake S, the Boy Scouts had the tent set up before the Cub Scouts arrived. The older boys demonstrated how to take it down and then set it up. Then they had the 9-10 year old Bear Cub Scouts work together, following directions to take the tent down and then erect it again. They really worked well collaboratively. The knife safety was the highlight. Each scout was seated 6 feet apart. The Boy Scouts taught the basics of knife safety including opening and closing a pocketknife, safe distances from other people, and paying attention to what you are doing. Jack shared a story he and Jake S had experienced while camping with Pack 403 at Alpine Scout Reservation in New Jersey when they were Cub Scouts. A fellow

scout accidentally cut himself when practicing his whittling skills. “Thankfully he was fine but you have to pay attention and be very careful.” The Cub Scouts practiced whittling using bars of soap while the older boys and scouts parents ensured they were practicing knife safety. The older boys whittled spears out of sticks to show what the scouts could do. Commented a Cub Scout’s parent, “It was truly amazing to see the younger scouts’ eagerness to learn when taught by boys a few years older. They were engaged the entire time and all involved provided positive feedback from the night. It was a great opportunity for the Cub Scouts to learn the skills they’ll be using in the years to come, and for the Boy Scouts to use leadership skills and pass on their knowledge and own experiences.” Justin M brought munchkins so each Scout chose a few of their favorites to take home in a baggie. The Bear Cub Scouts from Pack 403 (Commack) were Joshua S, Nicholas C, Justin M, Jake W, and Andrew M.
