The Marty Lyons Foundation (MLF) recently hosted its 29th Annual Celebrity Golf Classic at the Old Westbury Golf and Country Club. The golf outing was the foundation’s largest fundraising event of the year.

Hundreds of supporters played golf and attended the evening festivities. The Marty Lyons Foundation was founded by Marty Lyons, a former NFL defensive lineman for the New York Jets and member of the legendary “New York Sack Exchange.” The MLF grants wishes to children, between the ages of three and seventeen, who have terminal or life-threatening illnesses, and is the only nonprofit in the nation to offer second wishes.

Historical Society Groundbreaking Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone, Councilwoman Susan A. Berland and Town Clerk Jo-Ann Raia took part July 21st in the groundbreaking for the renovation and expansion of the Huntington Historical Society’s headquarters at 209 Main Street.

As part of the project,

the society is renovating the 1905-vintage Huntington Sewing and Trade School Building that has been its home since 1982; expanding into the vacant lot to the west to provide additional, climatecontrolled archives storage space; and adding an entry courtyard.

The Society has long

sought additional storage space to house its everexpanding collection of photographs, maps, documents, books and other ephemera from Huntington’s History.

Designed by Cady, Berg and See, architects of the original Metropolitan Opera House and The American Museum of Natural History,

the unusually-shaped Trade School Building originally housed one of America’s first vocational schools. It has been important to many generations of Huntingtonians as a place to learn marketable skills; to study English, citizenship, dance and dramatics, and as a Hebrew School.

At the groundbreaking, Supervisor Petrone offered brief words of encouragement, noting that Huntington is a community that values preserving its history and thanking the Society for its continuing role in that effort. Joining Supervisor Petrone, Councilwoman Berland and Town Clerk Raia were Gary Strong,

president of the Society’s Board of Trustees, Linda Walch, its executive director; and other trustees and supporters.

Also taking part from the Town were Town Historian Robert Hughes and Town archivist Antonia Mattheou.

Snapshots & Timehops By: Jamie Lynn Ryan At this time last year, I was in the midst of an eightday tour of Ireland with 13 members of my family.

And today, thanks to the wonders of a clever little app called “Timehop,” I am able to relive each day of that memorable vacation via the handful of photos I posted on Facebook throughout the journey. And they say too much sharing is bad!

Of course, this is but a small sampling of the nearly 1,000 pictures I snapped over the course of the week, from takeoff to landing and everything in between. Seeing as I

am slightly obsessed with finding random scenes and candid shots to capture on a daily basis, you can just imagine how thrilled I was to explore one of the most beautiful lands abroad.

Under any circumstances, it qualified one of the greatest experiences of my life. Coupled with the fact that it marked my first time on a plane and my first journey out of the country, well, that just added to the highlight reel. Considering that, prior to this, I had never ventured beyond the span of states between Vermont and Virginia, it was quite a momentous occasion.

This past Christmas, I

attempted to compile just a “few” favorites to create calendars and a small book of the journey as gifts. Seemed like a simple enough task; however, four hours after my initial brainstorm, I was still sitting at my computer, poring over hundreds of photos, comparing and eliminating until I had it narrowed down to the “perfect” mix.

As if there was such a thing. The perfection is in the moments you create, the unplanned, unstaged instants that bring to life stories and anecdotes to last a lifetime.

We could all use a few more of those.

During the day golfers had the opportunity to challenge Lyons’ golfing skills at one special par 3 hole. The course was full of fun activities and food. Soldier Ride Held

The 7th Annual Wounded Warrior Soldier Ride was held in the Town of Babylon recently, where over 1,100 riders took part in a 25 mile bicycle ride throughout the Town to raise over $100,000 for the Wounded Warrior Project.

Over 60 wounded service members took part in the ride – some of whom used state of the art adaptive hand cycles, tricycles and bicycles. Among the hundreds of riders was Town Councilwoman Jacqueline Gordon, who recently retired from the United States Army Reserves after 30 years of service both home and abroad, as well as

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez.

Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer welcomed riders at a brief ceremony that was held in front of Town Hall in Lindenhurst, where remarks were also delivered by County Executive Bellone, Soldier Ride Director Dan Schnock and Army Specialist Jason Braase.

The 7th Annual Soldier Ride officially began at approximately 9:30 a.m., when the riders disembarked from Town Hall and made their way through the 25 mile route, passing notable landmarks like Old Town

Hall in Babylon Village and crossing over the iconic Robert Moses Bridge for the ride’s last stretch to Overlook Beach, where they were treated to a barbeque with refreshments.

The Wounded Warrior Project provides services to service members, in both the United States and internationally, who have been injured in combat and works to raise awareness regarding issues that affect them as they continue to adjust to their new life.

The Town of Babylon has partnered with the Wounded Warrior Project since 2008 and has raised over $600,000 for the organization.

Grand Marshals Chosen World champion boxer Chris Algieri and longtime community leaders Anthony Mastrioanni and Thomas Jerideau will be honored as grand marshals when the Fifth Annual Huntington Awareness Day parade kicks off on Saturday, September 6th.

First held in 2010, Huntington Awareness Day has become an annual tradition, with thousands of people turning out to celebrate the community’s unity, diversity and solidarity.

As in previous years, bands, floats, vintage cars, service groups and local merchants will join the march down New York Avenue through Huntington Station from West Hills Road to the pedestrian plaza at Olive Street. Following a brief ceremony, everyone will cross New York Avenue to the fair in the municipal parking lot between Railroad and Church Streets. The fair will

include performances by local artists and booths offering crafts and services.

The parade will begin at 11 a.m. and the fair will remain open until 5 p.m.

This year’s honorees span different generations and areas of expertise. Algieri, 30, grew up in Huntington and graduated from St. Anthony’s High School, where he captained the varsity wrestling team and later served as an assistant coach. He graduated from Stony Brook University, with honors, with a degree in health care management and later earned a master’s degree from the New York Institute of Technology. A kickboxer in college, Algieri won the International Sport Karate Association’s Welterweight and World Kickboxing Association Super Welterweight Championships before retiring as a kickboxer to take up prizefighting.

He currently has a record of 20-0 as a professional prizefighter, including

a unanimous decision over ranked contender Emmanuel Taylor at the Paramount Theater in February and his biggest victory, on national television June 14th, in which he defeated Ruslan Provodnikov at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn to become the WBO Light Welterweight Champion.

Last week, he signed to fight the legendary Manny Pacquiao on November 22nd in Macau, China, for Pacquiao’s world welterweight title.

Mastrioanni, 83, is a longtime Huntington Station resident who has had distinguished careers in the public, private and political sectors, most notably serving several terms as Huntington Republican chairman and as Suffolk County’s public administrator. A Korean War veteran, he is a charter member and past national vice commander of the Navy Seabee Veterans of America and

the Veterans of Foreign Wars. A graduate of SUNY Farmingdale (he also holds a master’s degree from Long Island University’s C.W. Post College), he served for more than three decades as a member of the college’s council, including stints as its vice chair and acting chair.

He is a former member of the board of directors of the Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce.

Jerideau, 85, retired from the New York City Transit Authority more than 30 years ago, and since then has been active in many panels and civic activities, beginning with his appointment in 1982 to the Town’s Mass Transit Citizen’s Advisory Council, which he later chaired.

He has been a member of the Huntington African American Task Force, the Huntington Station Revitalization Task Force and, for the past 21 years, a member and chair of the Town’s Board of

Assessment Review. He is also the longtime president of the Whitman Village Cooperative Board and has worked to help make the Huntington Awareness Day fair possible “Huntington is proud of the contributions Chris, Tony and Tom have made to our Town and we are thrilled that they will be leading the annual parade celebrating the community we all love,” Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone said. “I hope people will line New York Avenue to show their appreciation, and then visit the fair that gets bigger and better every year.”

“Through the generosity of our sponsors and from other donations, we have been able to keep all events and rides free of charge, so everyone in the community can enjoy this special day,” said Dolores Thompson, who co-chairs the event with Supervisor Petrone.

Historic Designation The Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. Now, thanks to a grant from the William G. Pomeroy Foundation, the museum can announce that coveted status at the grand iron gates to the estate.

Pomeroy Foundation grants fund markers for historic sites - dating from 1740 to 1914 - to educate the public, to support local historic preservation, and to promote historic tourism and economic development. Grants pay for a standard marker, mounting pole and shipping.

“Each year the Vanderbilt welcomes more than 100,000 visitors from around the globe,” said Lance Reinheimer, executive director of the museum. “This plaque announces to each visitor as they pass through our stately gates that the

Vanderbilt Estate is an American treasure.”

The foundation, based in Syracuse, New York, launched its Historic Roadside Marker Program in 2006 to erect markers in towns and villages within Onondaga County, New York. Eventually, the program was extended to all counties in the state.

The foundation has funded more than 140 historic markers in 30 New York counties.

The National Register of Historic Places is the official list of the nation’s historic places worthy of preservation. Authorized by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the National Park Service’s National Register of Historic Places is part of a national program to coordinate and support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate, and protect America’s historic and archaeological resources.
