Motivation to be More Active Today’s students arguably have more on their plates than any generation that came before them. But even with their hectic schedules, kids still have free time, which many are not always using in the healthiest ways possible.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly one-third high school students play video games or computer games for three or more hours on an average school day.

Sedentary lifestyles can increase kids’ risk for being overweight or obese, and many parents struggle in their efforts to encourage their school-aged children

to get off the couch and embrace physical activities. The following are a handful of strategies concerned parents can employ as they attempt to motivate youngsters to be more physically active.

Choose the right activity.

Physical activity and organized sports are not one and the same. Kids can still be physically active even if they are not athletic or if they are simply not interested in sports. Find an activity kids can embrace, such as hiking, swimming or even riding bikes, and they will be more likely to get off the couch.

Join in the fun. Parents can set positive examples by being physically active and even exercising with their children. Rather than retiring to the couch after dinner, take nightly walks or bike rides as a family.

This is a great way to get kids off the couch, but also a great way to spend more time together as a family.

Involve kids in your own pursuits. Parents who are weekend warrior athletes can involve their kids in their own activities. Take kids along on weekend jogs, kayaking trips and so on, all the while explaining the important role physical activity plays in living a healthy lifestyle.

Going Green at School Eco-conscious lifestyles may have transformed the ways people behave at home or on the job, but many schools have taken a little longer to embrace eco-friendly practices.

But that doesn’t have to continue, as younger generations of students are growing up green and ready to embrace some green strategies in the

classroom.

One of the easiest steps to take is to reduce paper usage. According to Edutopia, a K-12 learning and education resource, the average school uses approximately 250,000 pieces of paper per school year. This estimate is based on an average of 50 reams of paper per teacher at a 100-teacher school.

During a recent vote from the Elwood Union Free School District’s Board of Education, Dr. Christina Sapienza was unanimously selected as Elwood Middle School’s new principal.

Beginning her new role on July 17th, Dr. Sapienza filled the position previously held by Dr. Hugh Gigante. In May, Dr. Gigante announced that he would be leaving the district to take on his new role as executive director of personnel for the Western Suffolk BOCES. Dr. Sapienza joins Elwood after nine years of administrative work as a middle school assistant principal in the Commack and Oceanside school districts. Rocking the Bandshell

On Tuesday, July 11th, music lovers gathered at the Jones Beach Bandshell for a performance by The Brothers Band an Allman Brothers tribute band comprised of students from Rock-n-Roll U (RNRU).

The band, comprised of a mix of typical children, and individuals with special needs aged 13-18, performed a full set of Allman Brothers classics, in addition to showing off some of their musical freestyle compositions.

This performance was the first of three concerts that RNRU students will be performing at the Jones Beach Bandshell.

“I couldn’t be prouder of the boys in The Brothers Band,” said Jessica Gallone, owner of RNRU. “They’ve put in many rehearsal hours in preparation for this performance. These boys have been students of RNRU since they were as young as seven years old! They have grown as musicians, entertainers and now young men. They really showed everyone what they could do tonight. Knowing that they love what they do up there, makes us feel that we are doing the right thing at RNRU,” she continued.

RNRU is a music school that teaches children and

adults of all abilities. It supports inclusionary participation within their performance groups.

Children and people of all abilities perform together on the same stage; with each child performing in one, or more, bands. RNRU supports a positive social atmosphere for children, and their families.

RNRU will be back at the Jones Beach Bandshell August 1st and August 29th from 8 to 10:30 p.m.

Dozens of communities and seven college and private schools held Relay for Life events across Long Island that were a huge success due to the volunteerism, generous supporters in the community and sponsors according to the American Cancer Society.

Throughout the spring and concluding on June 17th, locals celebrated cancer patients in treatment and beyond; remembered those lost to cancer and fighting back against cancer.

More than 1,500 teams joined the Relay movements, raised nearly two million dollars and honored more than 700 cancer survivors during

ceremonies.

“Thousands of residents joined together with the American Cancer Society to raise funds and awareness in an effort to free the world from the pain and suffering of cancer. They participated, volunteered, raised money and sponsored Relay For Life,” said Michelle Maugeri, Senior Manager for the Society, with offices in Hauppauge. “On behalf of the American Cancer Society Relay For Life, I would like to sincerely thank the communities and schools across the region for their generosity and support.”

Celebrity Golf Classic The Marty Lyons Foundation (MLF), celebrating its 35th Anniversary, recently hosted its 32nd Annual Celebrity Golf Classic at the Old Westbury Golf and Country Club. The Celebrity Golf Classic is the Foundation’s biggest fund raising event of the year to benefit its mission of granting special wishes to children between the ages of 3 to 17 diagnosed with life-threatening or terminal illnesses. After golf, guests attended a cocktail hour and dinner reception, including an award ceremony, raffles and auctions.

In attendance was Matthew Degori, a teen who has a rare disorder called Lowe Syndrome. He was granted a wish to visit Disney World in 2006. His mother publicly thanked the Foundation and said she loves being a part of the MLF family.

“It is all about making the wish kids happy. That is the ultimate goal,” remarked Marty Lyons. “I am so pleased and proud to see so many golfers and individuals come out to support this great cause.”

This summer, thousands of children will enjoy a summer outside of the city with volunteer host families in suburban, rural and small town communities along the

East Coast and Southern Canada through The Fresh Air Fund’s Friendly Towns Program.

While the main purpose of this hilly, moderately paced six mile walk is to relax and socialize, we will make stops to discuss some spots of historic interest.

On this leisurely walk in the southwestern section of the park, we’ll focus on the botany, history, and usage of plants. *** Literary Walk Saturday, August 26th, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

This program is a quiet ramble, generously interspersed with readings

selected to enhance your appreciation of the beauty, wonder, and tranquility of nature. *** Cliff Hike Sunday, September 3rd, from 9:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.

While questions are most welcome, there will be no formal discussion during this new six mile walk, thus affording walkers the opportunity for uninterrupted relaxing and socializing. *** Late Summer Seasonal Stroll Saturday, September 9th, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

On this short stroll, one of a series designed to observe seasonal changes, we will witness summer’s slow, subtle change, as she withers and goes to seed. *** Birds with Botany for Beginners Sunday, September 17th, from 9:45 to 11:45 a.m.

During this program, geared toward novice adult birders, we will be searching for birds. No birds? We’ll learn about plants. Bring binoculars. *** Traditional Nature Walk Saturday, September 23rd, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

We will take a slow walk exploring nature in the woods and tall grass meadows of the

southeastern section of the park. *** Caumsett Sampler Saturday, September 30th, from 10 a.m. to 1:45 p.m.

Federal Funding Approved Congressman Lee Zeldin announced that a $180,000 federal grant has been awarded to Francis Gabreski Airport in Westhampton, New York, which is home of the 106th Rescue Wing of the Air National Guard. The federal grant, secured through the U.S. Department of Transportation, will be used to fund phase one of a much needed four-phase project to construct a 4,900 square foot contract air traffic control tower, which will replace the existing tower that does not meet current building codes

and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards. Phase one is a site selection study.

Congressman Zeldin said, “The 106th Rescue Wing of the New York Air National Guard in Westhampton has a long and distinguished history of service to the community and our country. The tower that is currently at Gabreski, which has been around since the 1940s, will be replaced by a new tower with the necessary level of communications equipment and safety upgrades.

We must

ensure that the Gabreski facilities are always kept in top condition, as the 106th Rescue Wing plays a crucial role in protecting our national security and implementing emergency response requirements.

This grant will provide Suffolk County with the funding necessary to start the process of replacing the air traffic control tower.”

Since 2015, Congressman Zeldin, who has visited Gabreski Airport multiple times and viewed the deteriorated condition of the tower firsthand, has been part

of the bipartisan coalition in Congress working to protect contract towers, especially those that play an important national security role, such as Gabreski tower, from proposed FAA cuts and closures. The Congressman has been working closely with House colleagues on the Transportation & Infrastructure Committee and Aviation Subcommittee, Suffolk County officials, as well as past and current base commanders to secure federal funding for the new tower. In December

2016, Congressman Zeldin joined colleagues in the House, sending a letter to then President-elect Trump to support contract towers, and highlighting the importance of this program in saving taxpayer money, protecting aviation safety, and in providing air traffic services to the military. Most recently, Congressman Zeldin was joined by 90 lawmakers in a successful request calling on the House Appropriations Committee to fully fund contract towers. Just this week, the transportation

appropriation bill approved by the committee contained $162 million for the contract tower program, which is a $3 million increase from the prior year.

Following the completion of stage one, there will be an environmental assessment that takes place in phase two, as well as the design stage in phase three.

Phase four will be the construction of the new tower. Overall, the project is expected to cost approximately $5 million.

Legislators said an Islanders move back to Nassau County would have a far-reaching impact.

“Bringing the Islanders back to the Nassau Coliseum is important to our region,” said Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory. “Not only would it benefit Nassau County, but it would also benefit Suffolk County both in terms of economic growth and community pride.

Suffolk County residents who grew up watching the Islanders don’t want to trek into Brooklyn to support their team. We ask that discussions to bring Long Island’s hockey team home move forward and that the proposal be given full consideration.”

The Islanders and Barclays both have the option to opt out of their 25-year licensing agreement after the 20182019 season. In letters to the Islanders franchise and the National Hockey League, legislators said Nassau Events Center,

which renovated the Coliseum, has assured them it is willing to make modifications to the venue to accommodate the hockey team.

“Today we stand in front of the very same building where the Islanders won numerous Stanley Cup Championships and made generations of fans who believed in them, “said Nassau County Democratic Minority Leader Legis.

Myth: The renovated Nassau Coliseum is not able to host a major league hockey team full time.

There is a gap between what is there now and what a professional hockey team would need for Nassau Coliseum to be usable.

Fact: The new Nassau Coliseum is a world-class facility that would require very few enhancements to accommodate a professional hockey team full time. If the Islanders commit to a significant number of games at the Coliseum, Nassau Events Center will make the necessary enhancements to make this their home arena.

Myth: The team could come back temporarily, but not permanently. There are not enough seats.

Fact: Yes, the team can come back permanently to the Coliseum. There are active discussions happening between current Coliseum management and the Islanders and until those discussions come to fruition, nothing can be finalized on the enhancements that would occur.

Myth: The Commissioner has said that the team will never return to Long Island so is there really a purpose in trying to get the team back?

Fact: Current discussions are occurring with the team about their future so nothing should be dismissed at this point.

Legislators from Nassau and Suffolk County stood together outside the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum recently in a show of solidarity for bringing the New York Islanders hockey team back to Long Island.

The beloved team, which for more than 40 years called the Coliseum home, moved to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn at the end of the 2014 season. Ever since, attendance numbers have been disappointing and fans and players have complained about the new accommodations.

Legislators called for the team to return to their rightful home at the Coliseum and explained how such a move is feasible given the widespread support.

The press conference was the culmination of a grass roots movement led by fan James Romano, of Oakdale, who contacted legislators from both counties asking them to support a possible Islanders relocation back to the Coliseum.

“The Islanders have such an incredible history of winning in the Coliseum and it would mean so much to the residents of Long Island for them to come back to the island,” said Suffolk County Legis.
